Does anyone know of a software (free or pay) that I can use to burn DVDs with the subtitles. I tried VirtualDub but it was unsuccessful. I dont really need the subtitles to be burned into the movie but if I can have it burned to the disc so that it can be activated by the dvd player remote when played that would be great. If you haven't purchased the vehicle yet, then this may work in your favor when negotiating with the dealership. Simply tell them that it's a feature that is necessary to have, and it's a deciding factor in your final vehicle selection. Newer vehicles do sometimes offer the option of having the overhead DVD player installed by the factory. Otherwise, maybe you can make a deal with a dealership to pay for an overhead DVD player install, or split the cost 50/50. The cheapest unit I've seen online was around $200 and install will probably run around $200.

I can't say definitely for your model, but usually laptop CD/DVD/Blu-ray drives are replaceable even if they're not meant to be user replaceable.

Your best option is to take it to a computer repair shop, they can open it up and have a look
(note opening laptops is a very fiddly procedure there is like a million screws and you need a precision screwdriver set to do it.).

If it is, you or the repair shop should be able to purchase a " laptop blu ray drive " from ebay or a computer parts seller. It doesn't matter what make, it's a standard fitting.

I made a video for my friend as a graduation present on Windows Movie Maker and burnt it onto a blank DVD. But when I tried to watch it on a DVD player it wouldn't work, said disc error. Burning a file to a DVD just makes a copy of it on the disk but it doesn't have the special coding that works with DVD players. You need a DVD authoring program which will make a playable DVD, a disk that will play in a DVD player.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 have Windows DVD Maker which will make a playable DVD. You can find it at Start>All Programs>Windows DVD Maker. It's not way down in the "Ws" but is up towards the top of All Programs with a bunch of other things that begin with "Windows....".

If you have Windows 8, you don't have DVD Maker so you'll have to download a DVD authoring program. Unfortunately, Microsoft dropped support for DVD Maker so you'll have to download 3rd party software. Just about all the freebies have some bugs and only the paid programs seem to work OK all the time. One of the easiest to use and most stable freebies is DVDFlick.

I have a mac ibook (G4) with a superdrive to burn DVDs. I want to burn DVDs from video that I downloaded from my video camera. My previous attempts would not play on a regular DVD player, only on a computer. Also, it would only play one clip at a time, not continously. Should I be able to do this with iDVD or imovie, or do I have to use something like roxio toast (?)?

Use iMovie to create the movie, then use iDVD to burn the DVD. iDVD will make a DVD that is compatible with DVD players. Toast is not needed for what you are asking to do.

If you can manage to avoid making the trip memorable for your fellow passangers, it is already a great deal. Kids are bored on planes, food is yucky to most of them, and sitting is paralizing, in particular for kids of the age you mentions. Plane rides of more than 4 hours long are just a pain.

If your kids like to read, that's great, take books. Otherwise, PSPs, Nintendos, anything that will help them while away boring time. Don't count too much on movies on board, they aren't that good, and from back seats most of the time you get only a glimpse... If you have a DVD player, take it along, with a couple of decent new DVD (its worth the investment). Warn ahead the big kids that slipping and mis-behaviour will not be tolerated - boys are sometimes trickier, because they love jumping around and are used to more sports during the day, immobility is very taxing.

I saw a perfect one by Venturer, an 8.4" dual screen system, but can't find it at any store online or otherwise. I tried to email Venturer, and message failed. I am at a loss for what other system might work. We want to take on a long road trip and let the kids hook up their game system for the hours on the road.

I only found the 9 inch. It does all the same as the 8, but the reviews on it were lousy.
Everyone had problems with the latch on the door cover of the DVD.

You can get an external Blu-Ray player, but Apple does not support Blu-Ray yet, so you will need to use 3rd Part software - the player will probably have one bundled, or you can get Roxio Toast with HD plug-in.

vob format .. which is composed of mpeg2 in a certain resolution, bitrate, and sound format .... usually what you have with a home video is either mpeg2 or avi in the cams native format ... it could be simple if its already in mpeg2 all u need to do is author it ... you could use nero, which i personally dont like, or some other dvd authoring app ... if its in avi you will need to convert it to dvd mpeg2 first .... you may need a codec on ur machine to decode it properly like watever came with the software package with ur cam or u can get a directshow filter like ffdshow ... then use a converting app and editing tools like tmpgenc, winavi, and virtualdub ... with what i mentioned you can convert and manipulate just about any video into a dvd ... the end format after it goes through a dvd authoring app is vob ... and dvd puts those vob files into a folder named "video_ts" and theres usually an "audio_ts" as wel thats usualy empty but include it anyway ... so in the end you will burn the two folders to a dvd as data and close the session ... thats how it will look on the disks .. two folders with the vobs' and ifos' in the video_ts folder ..

What kind of cable or adapter do I need for my daughters tv?

My daughters tv is an older one, and the only place to connect a dvd or vcr is odd shaped. It's round, but instead of having one tiny hole to put the cable into, it has a couple of small prongs inside the round part....if this is making any sense to anyone, or they know what I'm talking about...I need to know if there is an adapter or something that I can buy so I can hook up a dvd player, vcr, or cable to her tv.

I know exactly what you are talking about. When I install cable in someone's home and they have an older TV, I have run into this. You have to use what we call a 300 ohm to 75 ohm 'matching transformer'. I'll include a link to one below so you can see what I am talking about.
One side has 2 wires that you will screw onto the back of the TV. The two prongs that you see on there now are from an old transformer or antenna that broke off. Take those old prongs out first before screwing in the new ones.
The other side of the adapter is where you screw on your cable.

There is one other possibility that I have seen but is very rare. I'll do the best I can to explain it. Some old TVs used to have internal antennas. These TVs have a built-in connector to screw your cable onto but they also have something that looks like a long staple on the side of it. One side of the "staple" goes to the TV housing (to the internal antenna), and the other is pushed into the connector where the cable screws in. If this is your scenario, then just pull the prongs out of the round part (the other side remains attached), then you will see a small hole where it pushes back into the TV housing for storage. After removing the prongs from the round connector, you should be able to screw in your standard cable as normal.

What resolution should i set my upconverting dvd player to?

I just bought a Philips DVP5990 upconverting dvd player, and i have a sharp 32" 720p hdtv. The player is hooked to the tv via hdmi. What resolution should i set it to? The obvious answer seems to be 720p, but the 480p looks better. Is it something i've done wrong or what? I know its a bit of an awkward question but i could take any help i can get.

You may have answered your own question.

In theory, as you note, 720p should be best, but there is really no way to predict ... you have to try different settings.

The problem is that there are various video manipulations involved and some scaller/video processor chips do a better job than others.

For example, if you set the DVD player to 480p output, your HDTV upconverts the progressive signal to fit the native resolution of your HDTV (i.e. 720p). If you set the DVD player to 720p or 1080i (for example), the HDTV processes this accordingly. 1080i is converted to 720p and the 720p signal is used direct.

So, depending on the relative quality of the DVD or HDTV scalers/video processors you get better or worse results.

That said, you don't say what connection type you are using and that can matter. Ideally upconverting DVD players should be connected via HDMI since on some models component is only outputting 480p, not 720p or higher, despite menu settings. And you can't get anything higher than 480 from composite or S-video.

If you are connected via HDMI, and 480p output works best in means the processor in the TV is better than that in the DVD player (and essentially you wasted your money .... not uncommon since budget upconverters rarely work well). On the other hand, if you are connected via component, composite or S-video try HDMI (you don't need to spend more than $10-$15 for a cable ... expensive HDMI cables are a rip-off).

In June we will be vacationing in the OuterBanks. It will take us 14 hours to get there. We will be making this trip in one day. How do I interconnect a vcr, a dvd player, and my cable box?

It's an older tv and there aren't enough connections on the back to plug them in seperately. If I connect the dvd player and the VCR together, and then to the tv, won't that work? I used to know how to do this but I can't for the life of me remember how, now.

I have experienced this same problem. There are a few possible solutions, but by far the easiest and best way is to buy an inexpensive Passive Audio-Video Switcher. These are little boxes that you plug everything into and connect to your TV. There's a button for each input, making switching between devices very straight-forward. You can usually find them for between $10 and $50 at electronic stores like Radio Shack, Best Buy or through Amazon.com.

But you may be able to solve this with what you already have. If your TV has two inputs, you could try routing your Cable Box through your VCR and then into TV input #1. Then plug your DVD player directly into TV input #2. This setup may work just fine, and also allow you to record Cable shows on your VCR. However, I would not recommend running your DVD player into your VCR, since most VCRs are equipped with copy protection circuitry, making DVD playback look bad or in some cases not work at all. If your TV only has one input for of these devices, then I would go with the switcher box solution.

I have a low top 1994 Chevy Glaval Conversion van and we don't need the VCR but need an DVD player and I am searching the WEB and only found DVDs that cost $400 and up for these vans. Anyone know where I can find a DVD for this van?

DVD players that work on 12 volt systems are expensive. Power inverters that convert 12 volt to 110 AC are not. Buy an inverter,and you can use any inexpensive home DVD player in the van
