HELP! I am trying to rip my entire dvd collection to my computer for use with the Windows Media Center. I have ripped two movies so far, one with .wtv format and one with mp4 format. Both play perfectly with VLC player but are extremely choppy with WMC/WMP. I have updated my driver's on my dual video cards already. I have checked/changed every setting I can find in both Catalyst control center and windows media player to no avail. Please help!
I am running Win 7 64 bit, 16gb of memory, two AMD Radeon HD 7800 series video cards and a i7-3820 3.6Ghz processor.

I have a laptop about five months old, it won't restore from a set point because it says the drive has something corrupt on it, and my cdrom dvd player only worked a couple of times and it stopped. I was thinking about trying the advanced restore option offered that says restore the computer to factory settings, I saved the files I wanted to but will this also wipe off Windows 7 from the computer? I bought it from Walmart if that makes a difference. Thanks!

If you restore back to factory, it will act like the computer was before you bought it, if it had Windows 7 on it from start, it will again have Windows 7.

Can television bought in Japan work in India?

I recently bought a television from Japan, when I played it in India the picture keeps flickering. Even when I play movies using with the DVD player I bought from Japan same thing happens. I using an adapter to convert the current from 220v - 100v
Can someone tell me what might be the problem?
Its more like a constant flickering where I cannot see the picture properly. Its more like running picture but the sound is fine.
The same happens when I watch DVD movies using my DVD player and disc bought in Japan.

I'm surprised that it works at all, considering that Japan uses NTSC-M, and India uses PAL-B. Besides being different color encoding standards, the horizontal scan rates and vertical refresh rates are also different.

Be that as it may, you say it's working but you're bothered by a flickering. Since Japan's vertical refresh rate is 60 fields per second, and India's electrical frequency is 50 cycles per second, you're probably seeing the difference frequency between your TV display and the lights in your room.

While 60 times a second is pretty fast, and even the slower 50 times a second is still okay, you're seeing a difference frequency of 10 times a second, and THAT is noticeable. Like watching an old cowboy movie where the stagecoach spokes appear to be spinning backward. The spiinning spokes are one frequency, but the film frame rate are a different frequency, so a difference is created that looks out of sync. If you turn off ALL lights, you should see the flicker substantially reduced.

Edit: THAT sounds more likely. The TV cannot lock up to the video because it's playing at a different rate than the TV If that's the case, it probably looks like jagged slanted lines, maybe with color flickering in and out. It has nothing to do with power or adapters, but the different TV standards used in the two countries. You have an NTSC TV, which doesn't work with local PAL broadcasters. Even with an NTSC DVD player, you're buying local PAL DVD's which are incompatible. If you can buy NTSC DVD's, you should be able to watch them, but then you'll see the flickering that I described previously, like the old-time movie flickering.

I wouldn't get an HD DVD player. I'd get a Blu-Ray player or wait for a hybrid that plays both. HD DVD players are becoming less common and appear to be going down the path as Beta.

Would prefer a portable DVD system with dual screens, and would like to have it with a battery. I saw a perfect one by Venturer, an 8.4" dual screen system, but can't find it at any store online or otherwise. I tried to email Venturer, and message failed. I only found the 9 inch. It does all the same as the 8, but the reviews on it were lousy.
Everyone had problems with the latch on the door cover of the DVD.

Ok, I am a big home theater buff, and just finally getting into the HD players. I am ready to buy an HD player but am so confused on how the audio works. To get the dolby digital plus of dolby tru, does the audio need to be played through the HDMI cord and into the AV reciever? Heres my setup: 7.1 Surround, 50 inch plasma with 1 HDMI input, and Pioneer THX reciever ( but with NO HDMI input) So my question is, If i buy an HD DVD player, and just run the HDMI cable from the dvd player to the tv ( since my reciever doesnt have an HDMI input), will I only get the HD pic, and not the awesome sound features like DD+? Basically, can I get the great sound HD DVD players have to offer by running an optical cable to my reciever, or does that sound only come through the HDMI? So confused :) Thank you!
Also one more thing to add: can someone please clarify the Dolby Digital plus / DTS HD. If I am not capable of running the audio thrgouh HDMI, which it doesnt sound like i wil be seeing my reciever doesnt have it, will the dvd player try and decode the DD+ if I use a simple optical cable? Would this sound still be better than a standard DVD, or am I wasting my money buying an HD DVD player when my reciever has no HDMI input? Thank you!

The only way to fix this yourself is if the player came with a remote control. Use the remote instead of the button. If you've lost the remote, you can try using a universal remote.

No point in taking it to the shop, since a new one is probably about the same price as a repair shop.

the biggest will be in the 12' widescreen but I'm a fan of the 10.2' because it's a perfect size to carry around with you but still give you the best picture. The 8.5' is a good value as well... First see what models brands/model number the local store is selling. Then go to www.videohelp.com and look up those models under Hacks in the column on the left. Many players can be made regionfree with a code entered from the remote control.

I found mine by going to walmart.com, checking the models I could pick up in the store against www.videohelp.com, and bought a Philips player for about $30. Entered the code I found and have no problem playiing any region dvd.

You might try updating the firmware on your Samsung player to see if the Netflix app shows up. But if not - your player does not support Netflix.

Try the Western Digital TV Live box. It has 25 apps and the support is much better than bluRay based apps.

Your MacBook can play video DVDs but it can't play Windows games DVDs. If you have a DVD that is a movie, TV show etc., just insert it. If the DVD player doesn't automatically open, go to the DVD player and open it. Then go to "file" in the menu, and select "open DVD media". If it doesn't work, then something is wrong with the DVD.

All the above is good advice - there are other choices too - plus you can get a small free app to do it in windows media player. (Major Geeks may have it)
Try AfterDawn.com, Ask Leo, Gizmo's, or Widows Club for sage advice.

There are also free codec packs which may/may not help you (Klite is biggest, but not the only one)

My windows 7 media player never asks me to set a region code. Sorry, I can't remember how/if I actually tweaked it.

It depends on what blu-ray and DVD player you are comparing. but generally the DVD will look better played in a Blu-ray because it is a native high-definition video component.

All Blu-ray players will attempt to up-convert the digital content of the DVD disc, so as to improve the picture quality. Many DVDs played on a blu-ray player will look better than it was originally recorded. There are also many up-converting DVD players that also feature the same technology to improve the picture quality. Of course you must have a HDTV or monitor that is capable of displaying the improved picture.

All up-converted chip-sets are not created equal, and they are not always 100% successful. The best chip-set is the HQV chip-set, which as a success rate some where in the upper 90% range. The chip-set is used in a few current model Denon Blu-ray players and a lot of first and second generation top-end HD-DVD and Blu-ray players. Denon also uses this chip-set in some of their upper end DVD players.

If you own a large collection of DVD and you don't want to re-purchase then, then the Denon models are worth investigating.

It's pretty much your call.

As long as people buy DVDs, they'll sell DVDs. BDs are growing in popularity, but they're still distant compared to DVDs. Most people who buy a Blu-Ray player today just get one, while they probably have a bunch of other DVD players in the house (kids, PCs, car, portable, etc).. so there's some value in buying DVDs yet to some people.

Because it's unlikely anyone could sell a BD player that didn't play DVDs, they all pretty much do. That capability isn't going away any time soon, if ever.. in fact, since BD is really a superset of DVD (MPEG-2, AC-3, DTS, PCM, etc. are still supported on BD, so the only cost savings removing DVD would be in the licensing... even the red laser subassembly is so cheap, it's likely lost in the noise floor.

So your investment in DVDs is sound. BD won, and it's moving fast, so I don't think that's a risk (but it was, pretty much, before January, when Toshiba was a competition). If it does ok or totally takes over depends on many things, including how long it is until we have a $25 BD player. I think it's really you call.

I buy most new stuff on BD, but still buy super-cheap and used DVDs for films that I might have rented but wouldn't have bothered with on BD.

It's funny that even films shot on mini-DV camcorders (standard definition), like "28 Days Later" and "Cloverfield" are showing up on Blu-Ray... you don't absolutely need BD for every title. But there are some films I just can't watch in SD anymore...

Your laptop will be worth something to someone on Ebay since it is likely to still have usable parts such as the screen, case, power supply, battery, and possibly memory and WiFi card. I would strongly suggest removing the hard drive since it may contain recoverable personal information that you wouldn't want to fall into the wrong hands. Include the hard drive carrier (tray), any adapter/connector that may be plugged into the drive and screws with the sale.

Your camera may also have some value as parts on Ebay depending on what model it is.

Your DVD player probably doesn't have much residual value, although it may only need to have a simple lens cleaning.

You can make someone very happy with any of your items by offering them as-is on a Freecycle group that operates in your area. The link below will help you find one or more of the nearly 5000 local groups that are active worldwide. I give away computers on a regular basis to members of the groups that I participate in. I can't place a value on all the new friends I've made.

In most cases, yes the images are embedded in player firmware.

You need tools to disassemble the firmware file, replace their image, recompile, and install the "new" firmware. The tools are generally not publically available.
