I am working with a magnavox dvd player/recorder mwr 10D6 and am using it to record church services by camera. After I finish recording the service on a blank dvdr disc, I remove it from the player and put it in my laptop afterwards, and I get a message saying the disc is blank (which is something I see as odd because it has video burned to it). The remote for this player has no finalize button. Does anyone know how to fix this?

If you wanna make a DVD that will work on a standard DVD player, you will need a DVD burning tool to do this. Just copy the movie to a DVD disc, it will actually not read by DVD players.

What Should I Get For Christmas 2011?

My family members are asking me what I want for Christmas but I can't think of anything! I am a teenaged girl and this is what I already have (and i am not trying to brag or anything because i worked hard and bought most of this stuff for myself)

I think that is all that is majorly noteable.
I want an iPad 2 but i don't know if I really need it and it is too expensive to ask for and I rather have a lot of less expensive things than one $600 thing.

My favorite stores are Hollister and Abercrombie&Fitch. I also love VS Pink and Bath and Body Works and stuff. Besides asking for gift cards and clothes and stuff, I also need a more expensive big gift as my main gift (maybe an electronic you can think of that i dont have that isnt too expensive?) I was also thinking maybe like more hair straighteners or curlers or something? Some cool hair tool gadget?

I guess if this would help, a little about me: I am sporty and athletic but am girly in the sense that I love makeup and hair tools and stuff. I dont really like video games and i like listening to music.

Should I return my recently purchased HD DVD player and buy a much cheaper DVD upconverter instead?

Is it worth the money to keep the HD DVD player? Doesn't it do the same function as an upconverter? Please correct me if I am wrong and tell me why it is so much better to have the HD DVD player.

Depends what you paid for it (and assumes you CAN return it) and what matters to you.

First, consider whether you can really benefit from HD DVD (or Blu-ray which gives identical audio and video quality). Basically you need a moderate to large HDTV .. say 40" or so and preferably 1080p. You also need to watch from a suitable distance (say, 1.5 - 3X screen size. lower number if a 1080p and higher if 720p). You also need an HDMI connection.

As an aside, I have an HD DVD player and don't find a sufficient improvement from HD disks to justify buying them, but I have kept the player for reasons that may become evident as you read on.

There are relatively few HD DVD disks (under 400, and Blu-ray is about the same), and many movies are not available on HD DVD. Disks are more expensive than DVD and previewed disks (i.e. cheap) are not (yet) available. So -- unless you shoot yourself in the foot and refuse to watch a movie unless it is in HD -- you will be watching lots of DVDs even if you have an HD disk player (either or both formats).

An HDTV will deinterlace (if required) and upscale an incoming 480i or 480p DVD video signal. However, some HDTVs don't do a very good job. Enter upscaling DVD players ... which may do a better job. But, only a good upconverting DVD player is worthwhile. Cheap models (certainly anything under at least $100-$125) just won't beat the video processing in most HDTVs (See the article at the link for a discussion).

HD DVD players (and Blu-ray) make good upconverting DVD players, and depending on what you paid it may be the most cost-effective way to improve the picture on all those DVDs you will still be watching for some time to come (years).

You can test this by comparing a DVD on your HD DVD player and on your present DVD player. Is the picture sufficiently improved on the HD DVD player to perceive a benefit?

If you can benefit from an upconverting DVD player, and the HD DVD player you have is about (or maybe slightly higher than) the price of a good upconverting (non-HD) DVD player (e.g. Oppo 981, $229) consider keeping it. It may help to consider the HD DVD player not as an HD DVD player per se, but as an upconverting DVD player that also plays HD DVDs.

So ... there are some factors to consider. Hope they help.

Plain old DVD (the movie format - not the physical medium) is 480p. An upscaling DVD player using HDMI can stretch that to 1080p, but the picture quality won't be as good as a blu-ray disc, which is recorded in 1080p so no upscaling is required.

If your upscaling player supports other file formats, like Divx, they should definitely support 720p, but I don't know about 1080p. You'll have to check the manual for details on what formats and versions it supports specifically. In this case, the DVD is just a storage medium, so you could put 720p or 1080p video onto the DVD and have the player output it correctly - assuming it supports the file format you wrote the movie to DVD with. Again, check your manual.

In a nutshell... YES!

More broadly, the method all depends on what you have available...
1. What output(s) does the Player have?
2. What input(s) does the monitor have?

If your output=input, then all you would need is a cable to connect them together e.g. s-video output and s-video input, all you need is the s-video cable (usually the cable is of male-male type)
There are multiple common input/output connectors for these devices:
1. S-video (already mentioned) (both devices)
2. RCA (RF type connector) (both devices)
3. Optical - (both devices - although these are very rare on a monitor)
4. VGA (15 pin connector - monitors only - have not heard of this on a DVD player)
5. DVI (most commonly on LCD, TFT and plasma monitors)

Signals are either anologue or digital in nature so if your output is not equal to your input then you would need to insert a modulator between the two devices so that signal can be converted and this should sort this problem out for you.

You would need to identify the inputs & outputs and check with you local Radio Shack type store and check if there is a modulator for connecting that specific output with that specific input.

The answers listed above are all correct. GO with the component video the S video will not support 480p it only supports up to 480i. You will have either an optical or coaxial digital audio out. You must use this if you want 5.1 surround. If you dont have surround then you can use the left and right (white and red) audio ouputs. These are the ones you will use for your tv. The digital should only go to your Home Theater receiver, if you have one.

Yes it will noticeably improve the picture quality of your standard dvds. If your PS3 is connected to a HDTV via HDMI it will send up to a 1080p signal, even though regular dvds are only in 480p. When you send your tv a digital signal with the HDMI it's one less digital to analog - analog to digital conversion it has to make.

By 720p dvd player I guess you are talking about a blu ray. A blu ray will look much better than a standard dvd disk. HD tvs do convert any signal they receive to their native resolution, but if you send your tv a 480 dvd pic, it will just convert a poor signal to a large screen. A blu ray will send you a full 720 lines of resolution and look much clearer. It can send a 1080p signal, but with a 720p tv, that's all you will see, 720p. Still an excellent pic.

Use HDMI or red/green/blue component cables to connect blu ray to your tv.

There is no 'stretching' involved.

It's not making it true HD

What they are doing is basically tons and tons of math. The signal on a DVD is 480 pixels by 720. So a chip in these players is taking that and making it into 1080x1920 i or p or 720p. It comes out as that new higher res signal, but it can't create more detail that what the original contained. It's just a trick, and it's generally better done on a DVD player than in the TV.

It does help things look cleaner and less jagged since you can notice such things more easily on a huge HDTV. But understand, no upconverting player, no matter how expensive or how advanced the chipset, will give you more detail than a true high def, high bit rate source like a blu ray disc.

Not all 720p HDTV have the same res, as there are three different pixel counts depening on the display tech. They are 1024x768, 1280x720 and 768x1365 (give or take) the pixel count runs from about 750k to about 1 million, that's three to 4 times higher pixel count than regular DVD.

So even though you don't have full HD, you'll still get the benefit of the extra def that blu ray offers. The player can be set to 720p or the TV will down convert a 1080i signal (if you set the player to that) note, not all 720p sets can handle or convert a 1080p signal. Not to worry just set the player to another resolution.

Hope this helps, go out and get a blu ray on black friday! Wal mart will have one for 128 rocks, that is if they have any left.

You could use a programmable remote control with a built-in timer. The Sony one (link below) lets you program up to 8 different timers. I'm sure there are others out there that aren't quite as expensive, but I have one like this and I know it works well.

But, I'd consider something else instead of multiple DVD players, a switch box (for the A/V signals), and a programmable remote. I'd use a small computer and store the video on the hard drive (a DVD is about 5 GB, so most drives today will hold many DVDs). No switch box is required, and the computer OS probably has a simple event timer that can run a DVD player with a new file name. I presume you aren't trying to play copyrighted movies, so you'd have full access to the video material to store on the hard drive.

You could optimize the computer for your video needs and even have it networked (if you want) to allow for online updates. By the time you get 4 DVD players, 4 sets of cables, a programmable switch box, and a programmable remote, you're pretty close to the cost of a cheap computer. You'd have a lot fewer failure points with a computer, and if you networked them, you'd have a lot less labor costs (no driving out to change out the DVDs). Optical drives fail with dirt and dust; no dirt or dust can get into sealed hard drives. Quantity buys of the same configuration from the same mfgr can reduce the computer costs as well...

For my birthday I got a ton of great dvds that I've wanted forever... sadly, they are region 2 dvds. (There was no way they could be found in Region 1, we looked EVERYWHERE.) Unfortunately my dvd player doesn't have any region free hacks. Everyone has been telling me how easy it is to just buy some cheap dvd player and turn it region free. Well, I can't find any!!

Make a note of what models are available at local stores, like. Walmart, Canadian Tire, Superstore (Loblaws?). Then check for that model at http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks (or just google the model number and region free).

However, I think the best solution is to make a copy of the DVD, since that removes the region encoding altogether. Then you can play the DVD on any player, not just the region-free one. If you really have a ton of DVDs, this may not be practical.

First see what models brands/model number the local store is selling. Then go to www.videohelp.com and look up those models under Hacks in the column on the left. Many players can be made regionfree with a code entered from the remote control.

I found mine by going to walmart.com, checking the models I could pick up in the store against www.videohelp.com, and bought a Philips player for about $30. Entered the code I found and have no problem playiing any region dvd.

How much does it cost to leave a radio on?

I have an elderly relative who says, "I have a policy, if it isn't worth the cost of the electricity, I don't leave it on." She will turn off the radio (an older Bose 'Wave' or an even smaller radio) if she doesn't like a classical selection, or a conversation on the news.

Yet she leaves on several components of her video system, which is older and has a cable box, VCR player, and DVD player, and she forgets to turn off her hi-fi equipment - audio tuner and classy dual- cassette deck.

We live in Taxachusetts. Which of her foibles costs more? TIA

If many "vampires" are plugged into one surge-protecting power strip, does that consolidate power wastage compared to leaving some chargers plugged into standard outlets (while power strips are left active with empty places to dock a plug?)?

@Polar Bear - TY for the 1st Answer. I'd heard that ('vampires') a decade or more ago, but don't know what the current wastage is, in either dollars or sense... as in, does it really make sense to waste one's time unplugging such things?

Leaving appliances 'on' will use electricity in proportion to the wattage of the appliance. In the UK, many electricity companies will supply you with a portable display that you can plug anywhere in the home (radio link to the meter) that will tell you how much power you are consuming - I'm looking at mine now and it says 495W. If I update it with the power prices, it will tell me how much per hour I am using in actual currency
I worked out that I can save about £100 ($150) a year by turning off my two PC's overnight, so you can bet I do that now..)
I don't see why a surge protected multi-plug makes ANY difference to your consumption, basically the Wattage of the machine is what will cost you at the end of the day. I now tend to put timers on any appliances like the TV/cable and router firstly to 'encourage' young ones not to start watching TV before 7am or after 1am, but also to save a little money although I agree that 'standby' usage is very little - leaving something 'on' is different and can use significant amounts of power over time.

And yes that's right, we pay a LOT for our power on this side of the pond! I dread to think what the average electricity bill is for a UK household, but I bet you would be 'shocked'..

Have a 40" westinghouse tv with built-in DVD player but remote has HDMI button- what's it for?

This TV is viewed by a bed-ridden elderly woman who uses the remote, but doesn't know what the HDMI button is for. Shortly she'll be using a laptop computer from her bed and is a 25' cable ok to connect it?

The HDMI button is to select the HDMI input on your TV. HDMI is High Definition (HD). So, if she is using any HD device, she can select that to watch whatever is plugged into the HDMI input on the TV. It will only show it in HD if the device has HD, like a HD DVD player, HD Video Game System, or if your cable has HD, stuff like that. It can also play stuff that doesn't use HD too.

As for the laptop cable, I'm not sure what you're asking there. Do you mean an ethernet cord (cord to connects the computer to the internet)? If so, then sure, it doesn't matter how long the cord is, only that it reaches the laptop.

My dad already order portable DVD player for both of us and i have bought a backseat organizer and markers and colored penciles and stuff like that. I also am bringing Backseat books from Randy Mechelle and my Ds and Ds games.I also brought a reading book and am making blankets for my sister and i.
