I am not looking for a Blu-Ray player and I am not looking for a streaming only Roku. :)

An Xbox can be a DVD player and can stream Netflix.
Linksys used to have a DVD player/media Extenter combo, but it may be cheaper to buy a DVD player + Roku box.

i am looking for the ultimate dvd player. money is sort of an object but im willing to consider any price. i want the following

hdmi output
divx playback (divx high def would be brilliant)
memory card/memory stick slot
dolby 5.1 output

i dont need every single one of these specifications but if there is a player out there that does have all the features listed above then i have found the ultimate dvd player! any help is massively appreciated and any links to sites where i can buy such a player would be great! thankyou

Why buy the ultimate dvd player? Blu ray is taking over dvd, and the blu ray players will play dvd discs.

Anyhow, the Denon DVD-A1XVA is an absolutely stunning dvd player, its even been said to be the best dvd player you can get, ive seen more exspensive but high price doesnt always mean high quality. The Denon DVD-A1XVA costs £2700 or $5000 approx, you might get it a little cheaper.

Other outstanding players (dvd) are:
Marantz DV9600
Naim DVD5
Meridian G98
Arcam DiVA DV139

Of course they all need top notch partenering equipment to appreciate there quality and price.

Sony BDP-S350 blu ray player (just launched onto the market) at £230 or $450 approx, not costly but absolutely outstanding, its getting raving reviews from the experts. Also look at the Panasonic DMP-BD50, also extremely good, not exspensive, its on the net and theres quite a bit of money knocked off it.

Wait till Autumn, there is going to be new ranges of equipment coming out. The focus from companies will be on blu ray players.

If you have an HDTV check out Oppo Digital (www.oppodigital.com). They have a DVD player that is relatively cheap and will upconvert the DVD to HD resolutions. It doesn't look as good as real HD, but I can see a definite improvement over a regular DVD player.

None... there is no DVD player ( or even a stand alone Blu-Ray player) better than the PlayStation PS3.

What makes the PS3 so much better is that the unit has it's own video graphics card and faster processor chip. Have the hard-drive to store data It's basically a mini computer capable of playing Blu-ray.

Vga to component to dvd player to tv?

Well recently I bought myself a vga to component cable thinking i could hook my laptop up to my tv and watch some anime. I was wrong. something with my graphics card didn't sit right. well... I have a dvd player. so Could I connect my computer to the dvd player using the vga to component cable, and then have the dvd player send a signal to my t.v? since I can't make a direct link, I'm trying to substitute a medium here. My t.v doesn't have hdmi. (-,-) I have alot of cables. Vga to Vga, but no Hdmi to component, or Anything, so Help> I'm sowwy if this is confusing

The DVD player would need to have a component video input.
As far as I know, no player does.


Active electronic converters are available that can make possible
almost any desired connection, but some of them are rather expensive.


Be careful: There are a lot of bogus cables on the market
that appear to have the "correct connectors" on opposite ends.

[One example of the many rip-offs I've seen is a VGA - to - HDMI cable.]

These don't work because they don't change the signal itself
from one type to another.


When looking for a converter, make certain it "goes the right way".
For example, you seem to need a VGA - to - component converter.

A component - to - VGA converter would perform the the opposite function,
and would not serve your needs.

i have a rather expensive dvd player that wont play a certain disc without the picture breaking up, however, when i put the same disc into my computer it plays like a dream with a clear picture. whats wrong.

One possible reason, poor disc condition that can be caused by poor physical condition and / or poor recording from disc manufacturer. As the result, picture breaking may be detected in dvd player as data streaming is affected by empty memory buffer. Memory buffer (size) is bigger in computer device, and it can handle much more error correction and ensure the data streaming.
Another possible reason, if the dvd player is rather new, the optical pick-up unit (OPU) in the dvd player may be having certain quality problem. You may consider to bring the player to service centre.
Last, if the dvd disc is not original and licenced copy, some expensive dvd players in the market are known to perform poorly while playing those discs ......

IN ADDITION, how is the HD DvD player for the Xbox 360 compared to other hd-dvd players on the market. Ultimately, which should I purchase? Bluray or HD dvd? I got a Sony Bravia and want only the best.
I already own an Xbox 360. I'm just contemplating whether or not I should buy a PS3 or the 179.99 HD dvd player for the Xbox.

there the same thing, a normal blueray player is like $2000 but 399 in the ps3 the xbox hd drive is sold seperatly and is not in the xbox

Blueray because there making more movies on it and the ps3 just kicks the ass of the xbox

What is the best DVD player/recorder to buy on the Australian market?

I have just noticed my 8 year old DVD player/recorder isn't playing DVDs! On top of that, it doesn't pick up the digital TV signal. I quite often plug my media converter into my TV to watch our downloaded shows.
What does everyone suggest as a replacement? I don't want to go overboard with the price, but for the right product I don't really mind.
