how do I hookup the Blue ray if the surround sound has no more input jacks left?

I have an HDTV with a surround sound system that has a 5 DVD player in it, I have a blue Ray DVD player now but don't hav any inputs to plug into the surround system. Which also has the inputs from the cable box. for now it's plugged into the TV and those speakers suck.

Answer
You connect your blu ray disc player directly to the tv using HDMI cable and from your tv connect and optical cable and connect the other end to the home theater in box. Home theater in a box does not have any input that you can connect other gear to it. It has one optical input for audio. Hope this will help you out.

How do I hook up my Sony Bravia surround sound system to my Blu Ray player?

I need ans

I have a Sony wireless Bravia speaker system with 5 disk DVD player.

I'm having trouble connecting my Blu Ray player to it.

It's a DAV-HDX 589WF Bravia.

I even tried connecting HDMI to my TV and optical cable to the DVD.

I either have picture or sound not both.

Any idea how to fix this?

Answer
"I even tried connecting HDMI to my TV and optical cable to the DVD."

That is exactly the way you want to connect it, because your receiver doesn't have any video inputs, only audio inputs.

The trick is that you have to set the TV's input to where the Blu-ray player is plugged in (HDMI 2?), so that you get the video. Then you set the receiver input source to play the optical audio from the Blu-ray player (it might be called auxiliary or external, optical 1).

You may also need to set the Blu-ray player to output audio from the optical port. Perhaps your player disables optical audio output when an HDMI cable is plugged into it, or else the port is disabled by default and needs to be enabled (set optical audio output to on).

What kind of cable or adapter do I need for my daughters tv?

best buy dvd player vcr image

mazey1967

My daughters tv is an older one, and the only place to connect a dvd or vcr is odd shaped. It's round, but instead of having one tiny hole to put the cable into, it has a couple of small prongs inside the round part....if this is making any sense to anyone, or they know what I'm talking about...I need to know if there is an adapter or something that I can buy so I can hook up a dvd player, vcr, or cable to her tv.

Answer
It sounds like the TV has an S-Video connector. To be honest, I've never heard of a TV that has only that kind of connector.

What you need is an RF Modulator. This will take the AUDIO and VIDEO outputs from the DVD player and convert them to CH. 3 or CH 4 with a Coaxial RF output. You can use this RF output to connect to the TV.

You might lose one channel of audio doing this, as most DVD players have three "RCA"-type outputs: Video (yellow) Audio Right (red) and Audio Left (white). Most RF modulators have only a single Video and Audio input (although you may find one that has all three).

Check in Radio Shack, Circuit City, or even WalMart. They have these at prices anywhere from $15 to $45. You don't need one with more than one "source" set of inputs, so don't go for the most expensive one unless you see some need for it in the future.

If I buy a DVD player in the US will it work in the Philippines?

I want to ship a dvd player as a surprise and if I buy it here on the states, will it work there? I know with vcr's some players wouldn't work in Europe or Asia.

Answer
Buy a Region Free DVD Player.

What do you need to get stuff from the TV to youtube?

That's probably a dumb question, but I have no idea how to do that. There are so many good shows and things that I Tivo on a regular basis, and I'm sure a lot of it would be of interest to others. Can someone tell me what exactly I'd need to get it from my Tivo to youtube?

Answer
There are a couple of ways that you can accomplish this.

You can purchase a DVD recorder and record these shows, then rip them to your hard drive from DVD. Then post onto youtube.

Brandon

I have an Onkyo receiver which has the 1080p upscaling. Since it upscales my DVD player to 1080p, will I benefit any from buying a Blu ray player?
The receiver is an Onkyo 706.

Answer
Yes, you will benefit from a true unadulterated 1080p source (i.e. Blu-Ray). The question is, is your HDTV able to configure 1080p resolution?

The shortest (and most direct) path will give you the best reproduction. That being said, you may want to get your video to the TV directly from your (soon-to-come) Blu-Ray Player via HDMI. Just a thought to consider.

what is the quality difference between a blue-ray and an up-scaling dvd player?

heavenly d

is there a quality difference with a blue-ray player with a movie at 1080p and an up-scaling dvd player at 1080p?

Answer
The difference? About 5x as many pixels.

Actually, it's worse than that because the Blu-Ray is probably a true progressive signal whereas the DVD may well be interlaced, which means it has to be deinterlaced for the TV which in a cheap implementation will mean throwing away half the vertical resolution.

Up-scaling is just a gimmick, the DVD player can't create data which doesn't exist on the disk, it can only try to make it look less horrible than simply stretching out every pixel to 5-10x the size.

Should I keep my analogue dvd player or buy a new one?

Sheldon

Is it worth keeping my analogue dvd player/recorder which I will have to connect to a set top box or buy a good new dvd player/recorder?
I want everything that I have to be functional and enjoying what technology has to offer. I also have a dvd player with surround sound, an older stereo system with record player that I want all connected and working. Is this possible?

Answer
Replace your set-top box with a DVR. It should not cost much more per month.

Plan to get rid of your "dvd player with surround sound" because these $299 box systems are disk players - thats all. It wont take sound from your set-top box, or your HDTV. We get 20+ questions per week around here from people who bought these - then discover what they gave up for the low price.

Connecting Everything: Yes - it's possible but you need a few new devices.

Would I just be better off buying a hd dvd player? Want a surround sound system, but the only one I can afford ($350.00) says it upconverts in HDMI. Wondering what will the picture quality be like on my new Vizio 37" flat panel hd tv? Should I just go ahead and buy the hd dvd player and later buy an hd audio receiver with speakers?

Answer
in response to the last answer 720p and 1080i are considered true hd as well, infact in tvs under 50 inches you wont see a difference between 1080p and 720p unless youre within a few feet of the television. the blue ray is the only reason to go 1080p other then that most shows or sports broadcast via cable or satelite are filmed at 720p. but to answer your question the only way to get hd out of a dvd player is with and hd player or a blue ray

How do I price these items for a garage sale?

Kaytee

I am moving overseas and selling almost all my stuff. I don't expect to get a lt o money for small items, but I was wondering how I can price electronics and small appliances such as:
19'' TV (retail $98)
Sanio DVD player (retail $50)
Sony boombox (retail $60)
Microwave (retail $60)
Recliner chair (retail $300)
Panasonic bread maker (retail $120)
Cuisinart immersion blender (retail $30)
All stuff is relatively new, well-functioning and very clean. And how do I price appliances which retail under $20 (such as waffle iron, minichoper, hand mixer, blender)?
I have never been to a garage sale and have no idea what people pay for what.

Answer
I know it hurts to sell for so much less than you paid, but used is used even if only a short time. I'd put or expect to get $50 on the TV, $25-$30 on the DVD player and boombox, you'll be lucky to get $20 on the microwave and bread maker. $10-$15 on the blender, but think you'll really get $10 or under. You can get toasters new for $4 - $6 at garage sales as well as your other small stuff. Start off with it a little higher than what you really want, so you have room to bargain. If you price it $15, but would be happy with $10 then you can give them $5 off and they feel they got a bargain! Make sure to put out plenty of readable signs with arrows, nothing worse than trying to find a sale and you can hardly read the signs and get plenty of change! They will hit you with a bunch of $20 in the morning and then you'll run out. Never save an item for someone with out a deposit. They say they will come back, but rarly do unless they've left a deposit. Then you may miss selling it to someone else. Don't be surprised when you have it priced $5 and they offer you $1! Stick to your guns and don't give your stuff away unless you want to. Best wishes on your sale and move!!

i dug out my Coby TF-DVD7005 portable dvd player for a trip to the doctors office to keep my nephew entertained. however when we got home i let him watch a movie and ended up falling asleep. (way to early of an appointment for my liking).. anyways while i was asleep he ended up putting a password on it by goofing off with it. i was wondering how to reset the password without knowing what it is?
noi do not have the manual anymore

Answer
well,
There are two ways in which a electronic system memorizing the user entered data, such like,
---Passwords
---Search words
---recent places etc.

The methods used in memory systems are,
---- Flash memories.
----Volatile memories.

If your player is designed with a volatile memory means, just remove the battery and hold it outside the unit, for some 2 minuts. It will get resetted easly.

If your system has got a secured design with flash memory, then you have to reset that with performing a firmware update.

If this two methods got fail,, better take it to service centre, if that product is under warranty.

Another risky method, replace the firmware chip, if you have got enough equipments.

Regarding flight trip with a 6 month old?

Akshu

Hi I am taking my 6 month old boy to India this month end. What are the do's and dont's that I have to follow when i reach India(as its peak summer that time). Also let me know the facilities available for infants in Singapore airlines. What must i be prepared for the flight??
thanks so much in advance.
I am traveling from San francisco to Chennai

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I now fly a lot with my own three children. We usually travel between Europe and California about twice a year. I've never flown Singapore Airlines. We usually go the other direction. I've worked trips into Delhi but I haven't been to Chennai.

Six months is actually a good age to travel. It gets trickier when they can run! You may have him crawling all over the place but for the most part, you'll be able to keep up with him.

The one thing I know about Singapore Airlines is that you're sure to get good customer service. They have HUGE crews. I was floored when I saw their armies of F/A's coming off flights. Many are teenagers. There are not the age limitations that you find on western companies so don't be shocked to see kids just out of school serving you.

I have never used any sort of medications to get my children to sleep on any of those flights. At that age especially, they do nodd off at some point of the journey, more if it's at night.

I also think he's too young for a portable DVD player. I got one when my youngest was 3 years old. They are kind of heavy to cart around and could easily break. How much screen watching does he do? Mine were not very interested, especially with a small screen, at that age.

Bring a few quiet toys but a small selection. Again, short attention spans and he'll be more interested in his new surroundings.

First of all, I really recommend bringing a car seat and using it onboard. Make sure your car seat is approved for use on aircraft. Unfortunately, Singapore Airlines does not allow infant bucket-style seats or any rear-facing seats. As you know, your child is safer rear-facing as a Flight Attendant, I'm a little at a loss as to why they even have this rule;
http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_UK/content/before/plan/specialneeds.jsp#Header5

If you can use your seat on board, the seat will get to your destination without risking it being damaged or lost in luggage.

If you don't have a seat for him, request it at check-in. Ask if the flight is full, and if not, they can "block" the seat next to you, only using it if they really need it. They often do this for families.

Bring the seat to the gate, even if they are unsure that you'll get a seat. This way, if you don't manage it, they will "gate check" your seat, sending it down with the strollers and wheelchairs. This is gentlier than checking it in at the desk.

I also recommend trying to sit at the bulkhead. These are the seats with the wall in front, located in different places depending on the aircraft. Bulkheads are easier with children since no one is leaning in front of you and there's probably room to crawl on the floor.

If you have a travel system, you can use the stroller until you get to the door of the aircraft and then it'll be "gate checked".. You'll have it again, by the door of the aircraft when you arrive. If you have a convertible car seat (going to 40lbs), there are a number of contraptions you can use to wheel it around. Not promoting these sites! Just examples;
http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_kids.html
http://www.amazon.com/Traveling-Toddler-Attach-Rolling-Carry/dp/B000JHN3AS
http://www.onestepahead.com/product/osa/363756.html

I simply strap mine to a small metal luggage cart and that works great.

If you do have a stroller, bring a bungee cord and double secure it before leaving it at the door of the plane. They can get damaged if they pop open en route. Make sure the claim ticket can be seen and isn't squished or hidden. Be sure to ask when disembarking where the stroller is.

Bring at least 1/3 more diapers than you think you'll need. I saw so many parents run out on flights when I was working! Wrap them in plastic bags and throw a bunch of rubber bands around them to save room in your carry-on.

For a formula fed baby, I really recommend using the bottles with plastic liners. Traditional bottles are too difficult to wash onboard because of the kind of sinks on airplanes. I premeasured the powder and rolled them up, placing the rolls in a ziplock bag. Then you throw the liners away as you use them and only have the ring and nipple to clean.

If you use bottled water, be sure to give yourself enough time to buy some once you're past security. Make sure you have enough! The water on the aircraft is filtered tap so decide if you're comfortable using that for your baby. Bottled water runs out fast on flights and we never had any extra for baby bottles.

Be sure you baby does not need the bottle warmed. Get him used to a room-temperature bottle before leaving. This is unnecessary health-wise and a real pain to do while travelling. I warmed many bottles on my flights but I wasn't there in the check-in line, the security line or the waiting area! Babies do great with room-temperature bottles.

Make sure you have at least one change of clothes. I would bring two for such a long journey. At that age, I simply dressed mine in sleep suits for flying. No one will care so keep him comfortable. Bring extra socks if he crawls so that he doesn't pick up anything nasty on the floor and to keep his hands clean.

Hopefully you have a good baby carrier. They're so useful for flying, especially at this age. I had a sling but other parents swear by their wraps and pouches. The Ergo and Beccos are other popular carriers for travel that go on the back.

I liked the sling because I could slide my babies from into and out of a stroller or car seat without waking them. It also doubled as a blanket, baby changer, breastfeeding cover-up and sunshade! My sling was magic for calming my babies during the flight. Other parents wanted one when they saw how easy it made my travels. Avoid front packs like the Bjorn since they're so bad for both the parents' and child's back. A good carrier should go to at least age 2.

Many flying tips say to make the child suck on something or drink during take-off and landing. This isn't accurate. ENT specialists say to have the child awake about an hour before landing (top of descent, landing or touch-down is too late).

http://www.entcda.com/AAOHNSF/earsandaltitude.htm

I can confirm that is when I saw problems at work. Take your child to the doctor in the last few days before you fly to make sure his ears are clear and infection-free. Heathy ears can handle pressurization changes.

About 8 years ago, I wrote an article on flying with children for an expat newsletter. Over the years many parents have contributed, both on line and in Real Life. I later put it on a blog so that parents had access to non-commercial information from someone with both practical and professional experience on the web.

Hope it goes smoothly and have a good trip!

I want to mount a flip down monitor to the ceiling plus hook up a dvd player and sega genisis, i have a pioneer head unit and will soon be adding 2 kicker subs plus kicker amp and also replacing the speakers in the front doors and back of the car. I was wondering what problems i might face in doing this. Thanks

Answer
Sparky's right... It shouldn't be a problem, at all.

Considering getting one of the second-generation Sega Genesis/Megadrives. They're a little smaller, consume a little less power, and have better quality components that are less likely to overheat (some capacitors may even explode) in a hot car on a sunny day.

Something else you might try is getting a GP2X handheld (see the link below). There are lots of 8-bit and 16-bit game console emulators (NES, SMS, SNES, Genesis, TG16, Duo, Neo Geo, etc.) for the GP2X, and it hooks right up to any TV. You can play the GP2X in and out of the car, and it's not that expensive.

Q. I copy and paste the MP4 file onto a blank DVD but it just says it needs to burned using a certain program.

Do I need to convert the MP4 file? What program would I use? I specifically want it to play on a normal (region 2) DVD player. Any help? (: I'm using Windows 7.

Answer
i think you should convert your mp4 file to avi, i suppose its going to work like that, as far as i know avi is optimized for burning to dvd.
if youre looking for a good converter for both windows and mac i can recommend you audials tunebite, ive been using their products for some time and they work pretty good. and if youre not looking to invest any money into a new soft, i think you might be able to do the converting using one of their demo versions. but its a pretty great soft, if you take a look at audials one for example youll see its kind of like an all in one soft, does recording, burnind to dvd, file sharing, converting of course and some other cool stuff. anyway, this is a step by step guide on how you can convert mp4 to avi, if you wanna take a look and make an idea about how converting works:

All you need to do is install updated device drivers for your cdrom from acer.com. Once you arrive, you will need to visit support then downloads. I am getting ready to buy a Dodge Grand Caravan and would like to get an overhead DVD player installed in it. How much does something like this cost? Do you think it would be cheaper to get it done somewhere else or have the dealership do it when I buy it?
Not sure if it matters but I might be buying a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan.

Answer
If you haven't purchased the vehicle yet, then this may work in your favor when negotiating with the dealership. Simply tell them that it's a feature that is necessary to have, and it's a deciding factor in your final vehicle selection. Newer vehicles do sometimes offer the option of having the overhead DVD player installed by the factory. Otherwise, maybe you can make a deal with a dealership to pay for an overhead DVD player install, or split the cost 50/50. The cheapest unit I've seen online was around $200 and install will probably run around $200.

How to modify my vcd player to be a dvd player ?

Q. I have old vcd player and i do not have money to buy dvd player
So how to modify it ?

Answer
You can't. At least not without spending a great deal more money than it would cost to actually buy a DVD player. DVD players can be bought at yard sales for about $5.00, or at second-hand shops such as Goodwill for about $10.00. You can get new ones at Walmart for less than $50.00.

The optics for a VCD player are identical to a CD. DVD uses something different, so you would need to change these. The transport mechanism is also different, as is the CODEC. The computer would be controlling different mechanisms, and is a dedicated controller, so that would need to be changed.

About the only things you would be able to keep are the tray on which the disk is placed, the buttons in the front, the case for the player and the jacks to connect to your TV. Really, you would be building a DVD player from scratch.

Buy a DVD player, it's cheaper.

I have a recorded DVD that was recorded from VHS on an older Sony DVD recorder a few years ago. Since then the original recorder has failed and we got rid of it. Now I can not get any DVD player or computer to read the disc, it says the disc is blank. Why is this? How would only the original recorder play the disc? Is there a program or something I can use to play it?

Answer
Asked and answered here:

Could be the file format
Could be the disk type
Could be whether the disk was finalized, as usually not done on the equipment you describe and needs to be for a standard DVD player
Could be a damaged disk

What is the DVD player you are trying to use? I would say 80% only play DVD's of either DVD+/-R in a standard DVD format. Some play other file type formats, some play non-finalized disks, some play only DVD-R, some play DVDRW.

Put the disk in a computer. Go to My Computer and see what the drive says.
Should be 0 bytes free in UDF format
That shows it is a finalized disk.
Explore it with Internet Explorer, and it should have a Video_TS and Audio_TS file set.
Inside the Video_TS should be .VOB files, .IFO files, and .BUP files.
Make sure your folder options include showing all file types.

You can download VLC player as it plays almost anything, and to fix or finish the disk you may need to finalize it, you may need to re-burn it, you may need to format convert it. If you provide more information I can be more specific. I keep my Y/A email available.

Will this cord work to connect my dvd player to my computer screen?

MAlloy

It has red yellow and white plugs on one side like the ones from the dvd player that plug in the tv on one side and it has that big blue thing you have to screw into the tv on the other. will this work to connect my dvd player to a computer moniter to watch movies?

Answer
Nope. There are no simple cords that will allow you to connect a composite-RCA source to a computer monitor blue VGA port.

Those VGA-to-composite-RCA cords are intended for video cards with a specially-built VGA port that can also send out a composite signal.

It will NOT work if you try to use it in reverse to connect a composite source like your DVD player to a VGA monitor. You will get no image.

Why not just play DVDs on your computer? Most likely your computer already has a DVD drive built-in.

Australia is region 4, USA and Canada are region 1, I want to buy some TV series on DVD which are 10x cheaper in region 1 format, if I spend $30 on a multi-region DVD player will I be able to watch region 1 DVDs on it? I assume it should work since it's called a multi-region DVD player but I can totally imagine that after I buy one I'll find out it doesn't bloody work or something.

Answer
More than likely such a player will ignore region altogether, and convert the video format on the disc to your TV format.

The only real issue is getting US based DVD vendors to ship to Australia at all.

How Can I Rip my CD To my Android?

Bradley

I just got a new CD & I want to rip it to my phone. How do I do it? And can I use a portable DVD player to rip it? Just wondering. Thanks. For free, too, please!

Answer
Best thing to do is rip the CD to your computer then just use Google's play service. It is free and you can upload 10K worth of songs for free and just stream the music and keep your phone's memory free. And with Google's music manager it will automatically upload any new song's you put on your PC to your online library without you doing anything. That's all I do now a days with my Android phone. And any song or album you buy from your phone will automatically be uploaded to your collection and then you can download it to your laptop or PC twice for free.

Im Looking to buy a double din head unit but i want something new. So does anybody know when pioneer will release there new head-units? I want a touch screen and i know they release 2013 models but looking for a possible 2014.

Answer
Maybe another month at least. The current lineup was available online beginning of November 2012. But didn't show in stores until well into 2013 (around me at least).

The big question.... what are you waiting for? Don't expect anything new for 2014. Their main focus is on their AppMode (as per my Pioneer rep), which this year's models already all have. The 2013 models might get a little cheaper when the 2014 models start rolling out, but they're already pretty darn cheap. I never thought I'd see the day when you could get a touchscreen double-din DVD player for under $200 (X1500DVD).

....friggin paid over $1100 for one back in 2005...without navi too. lol

What is the next generation wii system and when will it come out?

Wondering when the new Nintendo system is coming out and if it might be worth while?

Answer
I don't think they will make a new system for a long time... I'd guess around 2011-2013

They will probably just update it with new colors, more memory, DVD player, and a lot of stuff like that

Best way to stream Netflix thru my LG Blue Ray DVD player?

Curious In

I have an LG Blue Ray DVD player capable of streaming my Netflix from the PC. What is the best way to do this? Should I get a wireless router to send the signal to the DVD player? Does it cost more than my actual monthly subscription? Serious answers please...thanks!

Answer
Well, you should get a router regardless. It's the easiest way to share your internet connection between multiple devices. Using a router does not add to your internet fees.

Your LG blu-ray player can stream directly from Netflix - a PC is not required (other than to set up the account.) All Netflix subscriptions include unlimited streaming so if you already have a Netflix account you're all set there.

As for connecting the blu-ray player to the router, if it supports wireless, go ahead and use that. It'll be easier than having to run an ethernet cable from the player to your router.

Keep in mind that streaming movies is like downloading a very large file. If your ISP has monthly limitations on how much data you can download, use of Netflix streaming may cause you to go over. An average 90 minute movie will use between 1 to 3 GB of data.
