Can I burn a 720p episode to a normal 4.7gb dvd disc and play on my DVD player with a HD TV?

Welsh 4 Ly

Thats the question :-)

Answer
no, normal DVD don't support 1080*720(720p) videos, DVD only support 720*480(ntsc) or 720*576(pal), if you want to keep HD video quality, you should burn to blu-ray dvd disc. But it is expensive, if you only have normal DVD writer, you can try RZ DVD Creator, i have used it, it can create standard video DVD from any videos, it can directly convert and burn any videos to DVD(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-DL, DVD+DL, etc), such as avi to DVD, etc.

Work well on my computer, offer the good quality, easy to use, i like it. following is a step by step guide:
http://www.rzfun.com/convert-avi-to-dvd.html

Hope it can help you.

i have a 720p 50in plasma and i have a dvd player that up converts it to the highest res on the tv.?

Will a Blu Ray dvd player do the same as that or will it be better?

Answer
A regular upconverting dvd player takes the 480 resolution of a regular dvd and does a fill in the blanks thing and feeds it to your tv at 720p. So it's clearer than non upconverted, but not HD as it's still 480.

A blu ray player takes the blu ray disk which is recorded at 1080p resolution and feeds it to your tv at 1080, but your tv takes the 1080p and downconverts it to the 720p resolution of your tv as HD tvs can display only at their native resolution.

So blu ray will look better at downconverted 1080p than a normal dvd upconverted for 480, but not as good as viewing on a 1080p tv.

What type of video formats are compatible with DVD players?

Gurl

Like, are .mov .avi .mpeg .mpeg-2 .mpeg-4 etc. able to play on DVD players?
I've tried .wmv but it doesn't work, but maybe my DVD player is out of date. i dont know.

Answer
Most DVD players only recognize standard video DVD well which include VOB, IFO and BUP files, doesn't play .mov, .wmv, .avi, .mpg, .mpeg2, .mpeg-4, etc. So if you want to play the burned DVD on DVD player well, you need to use a right software to convert and burn your videos to standard video DVD, you can try RZ DVD Creator, it can convert any videos to standard video dvd and burn to any dvd disc(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc), such as convert and burn .mov, .wmv, .avi, .mpg, .mpeg2, .mpeg-4, etc to standard video DVD, the burned standard vidoe dvd can be played well on DVD player. You can yahoo or google search and download RZ DVD Creator, easy to use, hope it could help you.

what are common video formats supported by dvd players?

Mirza M

for example wmv avi...

Answer
Most DVD players do not support any traditional computer file format. They support VOB and IFO files, which are specially encoded MPEG files....more commonly known as DVD format.

They will also recognize Video CD (VCDs), which are MPEG encoded files in an DAT format. These are uncommon because it takes two CDs for a 2 hour movie and lower quality video than traditional DVDs.

Some DVD players support Divx encoded AVI files. This is usually indicated by a Divx logo printed on the front of the DVD player.

I have yet to see a DVD player support WMV or MPG file formats.

Where can I find a case for portable dvd players to use in the car?

Mom of Thr

I don't want one that goes in between the seats as both of my kids have their own dvd play. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry meant to say they both have their own dvd players.

Answer
I don't have an answer specifically to your question - but I did want to mention - a 3lb DVD player, in a 20mph crash is like 60lbs of force crashing into your child's face. There have been many instances of people dying from head injury or internal bleeding due to a free laptop being projectiled into the air.

If you're set on having the DVD players in there, make sure they are installed in a way that they will not move in a crash, and also so they dont' interfere with any of the other passengers safety.

:) Safe travels.

how do i hook blu ray up to netflix?

LIL FOLK$

Answer
Your Blu-Ray dvd player has to have the netflix as one of the many websites that it can stream from. You will find a sticker on the Blu-Ray dvd player netflix or on the purchase box. Some blu-ray dvd players also stream Youtube videos, Pandora (for music), Vudu (on demand movies). If your Blu-Ray dvd player does not say Netflix then you will not be able to stream any movies from Netflix to your Blu-Ray dvd player.

Any free to play DVD's on my Windows PC (XP)?

spcexcel

I've tried trial versions of this and that, as well as free junk that turned out not to work at prvsoft.com.

Nero seems to have turned into nothing more than a gimmick company selling software for people trying to somehow copy or rip off DVD's, it used to be a regular dvd playing software company.

So is there any truly free way, that works, to watch regular DVD's on my windows PC? I know roxio and stuff will do it for $15 or $20, but am I missing any free option that works...

thanks in advance.
No ... Windows media player does not play hollywood DVDs, unless a DVD Encoder was installed on your machine already. Even microsoft says, you have to go somewhere else and pay for it.
See this:

Can you recommend a free DVD decoder for Window's XP?

How to access dvd on a dvd player through a computer?

a_p1988

i dont have a dvd player on my pc, and i accidently burned the dvds with videos without properly encoding them. Now i cant use them on either my pc or on my dvd player...can anyone pls guide me as to how to connect a dvd player and a pc, so as i can access dvds on my dvd player via my pc..
i actually burned the dvd's on my friends pc..at home i dont have a dvd player

Answer
If you were able to burn dvds with your dvd burner, it's also a dvd player. you should have the software to play the dvds from your dvd burner/player that's installed in your computer. When you properly burn them with your burner, it should play on both your computer's burner/player and your regular settop dvd player.

If you have a dvd player on your computer does it mean that you can burn dvds on it?

Jeeba

im trying to make a movie. and i just bought blank dvds. the prblem is that i dont know if the computer can burn it. it has a dvd player does it mean that it can burn dvds? or is there such a thing called a dvd burner you have to get for your computer. this maybe dumb but i need to know cuz i spent alot of money buying the blank dvds and i dont want to open it until i can figure this out..

thanks ill give you 5 points

Answer
A DVD player is not enough to be able to BURN DVDs. What is confusing is that they sell a so-called Combo drive, which as a DVD player and CD burner in one. So it can burn CDs, but not DVDs. It can only PLAY DVD movies or read data from a DVD.

You can get a decent DVD burner. Here are two that I recommend.

DVD players upscaling 1280?

Bobby A

I went to purchase a Dvd player it said something to the affect of upscale 1080 or something what does this mean. Does anyone know what is planned for the future of electronics. I want to purchase a new tv do I need a flat screen. Will this dvd player i mentioned be phased out soon? What is my best option for purchasing new electronics? What product name is the best?

Answer
Upscale to 1080p means that the player interpolates your regular DVD's and sends a 1080p or 1080i signal to your TV. You would have to have a 1080p TV to take advantage of this. Blue-ray DVD players also do up conversion, regular DVD's may be phased out in favor of blue ray disks ...good brands include but are not limited to Sony Samsung JVC Sharp depends on what your getting into also Denon makes excellent HT Recievers while I wouldn't buy a sony reciever myself but their TV's are excelent Denon does not make TV's...so you just need to do the reasearch man...try Cnet; ZDnet; hometheater review and other places like that on line to get the info on the top brands.

dvd burning?

Amandaa K

hi i use lime wire and download avi and mpg to dvd -rw and some will play on my dvd player on my tv and some will not, why is this? Some of them are too big to and wont fit on disk step by step how to i fix this so i can play them oh tv dvd recorder. Also i decided to use dvr-r instead of rw. My dvd recorder will say invalid disk/ no disk after I burn a something i know works on the disk .HELP IM NOT GOOD AT THIS STUFF BUT NEED TO BE.

Answer
1st- .avi's are usually DivX (a pay for use app-easy to use) or XVid (freeware but difficult to master). These wont play on standard DVD players unless they say DivX Certified. They will have to be converted to a standard MPEG using software like Nero Vision.

2nd-All MPEGS are not DVD compliant.

3rd-To shrink the movies, use DVDShrink. The easiest ripper is 1ClickDVDCopy. It'll rip and shrink the movie automatically.

4th-Most players wont read a dvd-rw. Just use dvd-r's.
5th-Dump limewire and use a bittorrent client like utorrent.

To learn the ins and outs of cd/dvd burning try http://www.afterdawn.com or http://www.doom9.org These sites are dedicated to recording. They offer plenty of tutorials from beginner to expert.
For bittorrent try http://dessent.net/btfaq/
Good luck....

Can you hook a dvd player up to an acer iconia A500-10S16w?

Leah

Can you hook a dvd player up to an acer iconia A500-10S16w tablet?
If so what kind? a normal kind or one made for a computer? Thanks.
Leah :)

Answer
There is no way to connect a DVD player. The acer iconia A500-10S16w has no "Video input" as far as I know. The alternative would be a dvd ripping software that can rip a dvd to acer tablet compatible video files for watching a dvd movie on acer tablet ... Below is a dvd ripper app i ever used for my tablet, it is not bad. You can check it via the link in the source box if interest:

What is the benefit of having a wifi blueray dvd player?

Wayne

As I begin the process of buying a Blueray player, I'm confused over those that have wifi. I guess I don't know why a player needs an internet connection. Could someone fill me in on this?

Answer
1. the biggest reason why it would need an internet connection is if you bought it in hopes of streaming netflix/youtube/pandora radio etc. most people want a wireless connection because they do not want to deal with wires and running them etc, i would still recommend going wired especially if you are watching hd video since a wireless connection usually wont have the speeds necessary for hd video.

2. you can download apps to your smartphone ipod touch etc, so that you can use them as a remote, or to pass files from one source to another, example would be, if you wanted to look at the pictures in your phone on your tv you can do that through your bluray player.

3. this was the original reason why bluray players wanted/needed an internet connection, firmware updates, with bluray discs the way they are manufactured changes, they constantly improve the way its done to give you better performance, and with that you need to update the firmware so that it can continue to read all the new bluray movies out there. it just makes it easier being able to download the firmware directly to the machine vs having to download it to your pc and then burning it to a disc etc.

wifi isnt that necessary. but if you ever plan on going wifi then i would advise buying it with it built in versus buying the adaptor which costs more than the 2 combined. and usually 30-40 more. plus most retail stores have deals from the manufacture that will give away a free adaptor.

Why would you need wifi in your DVD player?

iDVD (apple application) WONT PLAY IN DVD PLAYER, ONLY IN PS3?

ddti

I burned a slide show with music onto a DVD+R blank disc. It appears to be successful as in DOES play in several Play Station 3 units, but will NOT play in any dvd player or computer. It is so frustrating & the dvd is a gift for someone so this is very time sensitive!! :(
What could be wrong? Do I need to do something different in finalizing the completion of the burn? I have heard to maybe try a DVD-R?? But the video is on there as we have watched in on a playstation, how can I get it to play on a dvd player or computer??? Again, I am using an apple mac book pro with iDVD application to burn the dvd. THANKS SO MUCH!!

Answer
To insure compatibility you need to use a DVD-R disc burned no faster than 2x and you MUST FINALIZE! Only computers recognize non-finalized discs. Finalizing with verify will make the disc DVD player compatible.

What to do with HD DVD players?

StanleyB51

It is not really a question; it is more like a challenge. Now that HD DVD is no longer, someone should crate a website were all the technical people and software engineers will try to find another uses and applications for the existing units sold till today. Sort off like what they did for YUGO car. People began to build different things in to it like piano, Jacuzzi etc. Toshiba will be helpful by releasing the code to the public and put some monetary reward. Perhaps wee can see another âLENUX DVDâ Your opinion please.

Answer
I agree with TV Guy. I bought an HD-DVD player before Christmas. I just plan on using it for the HD-DVD movies I own and as an upscaling DVD player for the hundred DVDs I already own. Given the number of free movies that I got and how good my existing DVDs look with it compared to my old DVD player, I'll just hold out for awhile until the price of Blu-ray players comes down a bit more before rushing out. Once they hit about $200, it'll have cost me no more for the HD-DVD player and Blu-ray player "then" as it costs for a Blu-ray player "today" ($399).

The HD-DVD situation is not like the LaserDisc situation from a decade ago where LaserDisc players really only played LaserDiscs and often didn't even play CDs.

Sorry, not really interested in the ideas of how to cannibalize a perfectly good upscaling DVD player that also happened to play HD-DVD.

Whats the best choice of Karaoke DVD Player?

mitchiko6t

Were planinng to buy a dvd karaoke player. Our choices are Hyundai platinum, Karavision and Promac Cantana. Calling owners of these brands for your comments/review of these products. Can you tell me the best choice in terms of the following
1. price
2. availability/update of songs
3. sound quality
4. number of songs included
5. special features
6. scoring
7. package inclusions

your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
What you will really want is a multi-format karaoke player. Only a fraction of available karaoke music is available on DVD. The most song titles by far are found on CD+G discs. The largest selection and best prices on multi-format players can be found at http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?acekaraoke+9xwDVM+dvdplayers.html

TV, DVD player, karaoke system, front projector and stereo system...? Please help!?

Someone so

I currently have a plasma TV, a DVD player, a Comcast DVR box and a Toshiba front projector with a digital coaxial audio output. Now, the TV, DVD player and DVR box are all wired together and work fine (TV and DVR box connected via HDMI, TV and DVD player component cables).

My wife wants to buy a karaoke system and I want to somehow connect my Toshiba front projector to this whole thing for the audio (either from the speakers or headphones). I also like to listen to music CDs. I understand vaguely that the karaoke thing consists of a mixer, one or two mics and two speakers. Are there other devices I will need? How do I connect all these guys together?

Thanks. By the way, I was also told that karaoke speakers are different from regular speakers. How so? Also, the Toshiba front projector has a built-in DVD player of it own so the DVD player mentioned above is only used with the TV.

Answer
It depends on how much you want to spend on your karaoke system. Since you have a plasma TV, I am thinking you probably want a little more than just a basic karaoke system. Also, what are you planning to use as the source of karaoke? DVD player, CD+G player or software with a computer?

You will need the following to build a good sounding system.

1. Speakers. Don't use the home speaker system they are not made to handle live performance. It can easily ruin your speakers. Look for one that can handle live performance.
2. Microphones. Most people recommend the Shure SM50 (about $99).
3. Mixer with effects. Look for one that has echo or reverb. It will make you sound much better than you realize.
4. An amplifier. (You can use a receiver but amplifier is a better choice.)

There's not much karaoke made with DVD disc. Most common here are CD+G but your player has to be able to support it. You must use a player that has CD+G support if you are planning to use CD+G disc as the karaoke source.

Another method is to use a laptop or desktop to play the karaoke. There are program out there that let you convert the CD+G disc you buy into mp3+G and you can play those in your computer. A laptop is more flexible since you are not limited to just mp3+G.

For karaoke software. You can check out Walaoke at http://www.walaoke.com

How to Connect Samsung LCD TV to LG dvd player?

Sarah

I bought a brand new Samsung LCD Tv today and am trying to connect my old LG dvd player but it keeps saying, "no signal - check signal cable". I have plugged the component cables into every combination but it is still not working. (I also noticed that I have one yellow and one white component - isn't there normally a red one too?) Is it because the dvd player is too old (it's probably only 4 years old)?

Answer
Red and white for audio (no yellow)

The the others with the longer connections; red/blue/green for video.

The set the DVD player to 16:9 and 480p

Your cables should look like this

Now I can't figure out how to get the movie to show up on the the tv. I used the red, white and yellow cables from the dvd player to the tv. I then opened up the input menu and tried all the selections. I keep getting a "no signal" message. What can I do to fix this? Thanks!!!

Answer
Sounds like you hooked it up correctly. Double check your cables. Try the DVD player on a different TV.

Can DVD player for mac play disk images?

James H

Is there a plugin or fix available to allow the standard DVD player application in mac to play disk images (mounted from .dmg)? It would be helpful and would remove the need to take all my delicate DVD's on long car trips. :)

Answer
DVD Player.app has this functionality by default. I use it all the time to check DVDs I make in DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. I also use it to time-shift rentals.

Once DVD Player is open, choose File < Open DVD Media. Choose the disk from the sidebar. You don't have to go down to the line to select folders or anything.

Alternatively, you can use Front Row to play the DVD as a disk image. First, you must create an alias of the /Volumes directory in your home folder. Because /Volumes is hidden, you can get to it by activating Finder and selecting Go < Go to Folder and typing /Volumes Option + Command + drag the icon on top of the window to create an alias in your home folder.

You can use a bunch of third party video players, namely VLC to watch DVDs stored in that format, but the concept is that it is a virtual disk, so the OS understands what it is, and what to do with it.

what is the best dvd player for mac?

ssm

Answer
Do you mean DVD player software? Or a DVD drive?

Mac OS X comes with an application called DVD Player. VLC (free download) is also a good player.

If you mean DVD drive, I'm afraid I can't be of much help since all my Macs have built-in DVD drives.

Should I buy an HD-DVD player or a blu-ray DVD player?

brian h

Will one or the other be obsolete in a year or so? Which has the better long range prospects? Thanks for any help.

Answer
Right now HD-DVD seems to have the edge:

- The players are less expensive--standalone players start at $500 (though I saw a first-generation HD-DVD player selling new at Best Buy for $300), and XBox 360 owners can buy an add-on drive at $200. The cheapest Blu-Ray player is the PS3 at $500...if you can find one.
- There are more titles out, because HD-DVD debuted months before Blu-Ray.
- The discs are often less expensive, because it was easier for DVD manufacturers to switch to HD-DVD technology than Blu-Ray.
- The players are already in their "second generation," with more kinks having been worked out.
- Reviews of the picture quality of HD-DVD's versus Blu-Ray have consistently been in favor of HD-DVD, if not tied. That's because, despite Blu-Ray's *potential* of holding more data than HD-DVD, the majority of HD-DVD's actually hold more data than the majority of Blu-Rays. Many Blu-Rays also use the older, more space-hungry MPEG2 codec for their video, while HD-DVD uses the newer, more compact VC-1 codec.
- Sony, the primary backer and developer of Blu-Ray, has been plagued with PR problems for the past year--the PSP hasn't been as popular as they'd hoped and the UMD format is flopping as a way to distribute movies; the company was found to be putting software in their music CD's that install "rootkits" in computers that made the computers more vulnerable to hacking and viruses; and the disappointing debut of the PS3 has made Sony the easiest company to hate lately. And, as someone else said, given Sony's track record, it's easy to predict that Blu-Ray will fail.

Blu-Ray's only advantages so far are that certain major film studios (Sony, Disney, and Fox) are exclusive to Blu-Ray, and that the 400,000 or so PS3's that are out there are Blu-Ray players, making its market penetration just about even with HD-DVD, except for the fact that many PS3 owners may not be using the PS3's for movies.

So, personally, if you were to get into high-definition movie watching, I'd recommend HD-DVD over Blu-Ray. But that doesn't mean you won't be missing out on some stuff (mainly movies from Sony, Disney, and Fox).

Is the Sony Blu-ray dvd player worth buying?

asdf

We have a 46'in Sony Bravia and the picture is not all that clear. Especially some of the dvd's. And if we get this blu-ray dvd player from sony. Would it really be worth buying, is it really clear. Is it worth buying. ????
Well none of your answers really helped. We are just going to get the blu-ray dvd player tomorrow. Because it's going to be 179 tomorrow at K-Mart.

Answer
Your mind is made up, BUT here's my '2 cents'
If your current setup doesn't look very good you may have a setting or cable issue. For example, are you using HDMI (or Component) cables? If not that alone will degrade the signal.

Potential improvement depends on what TV you have. You say Sony Bravia, but not whether it is 720p or 1080p.

If you have am 1080p model it will benefit from Blu-ray. If you can get it for a good price go for the Sony stand alone Blu-ray player (it may not be the cheapest or the most versatile (cf PS3), but it's an OK player and all you need to enjoy HD movies). Make sure you use HDMI to connect (and don't worry about buying expensive cables ... any Category 2 certified HDMI 1.3 cable <$20) would be a good choice (See monoprice.com)

On the other hand if you have a 720p/1080i HDTV you won't get that much improvement over an up-converting DVD player (at least a medium > high end one ... i.e. ~$70 or more). If you want to be future proof and can afford the extra the Blu-ray player can't hurt ... just don't expect a big video quality improvement vs the upscaling DVD player.

Final comment: Blu-ray may be worthwhile to you, but expect to pay a premium for the disks vs the same movie on DVD (Blu-ray disks are more expensive to buy or rent) and that's not going to change due to higher licensing and production costs.

Enjoy whatever you buy.
