I want to purchase two separate dvd players but I want to be able to have my boys watch the same movies at once, but if they like they can watch their own movies. I want to be able to have the ease of them watching one movie as well. Thanks!

Answer
The portable DVD player would have to have both A/V input and output connection. One such device is according to its specs:

Toshiba SD-P71S

What can I do to get my DVD players to work?

Phantom fr

I have had my DVD players for a long time now, but it they both stopped working at the same time. I will put a DVD in one of them and it says "Error H02" and the same message appears with on the other one when I try it too! What is wrong with them?! They were working just fine a week ago, and now they won't play anything! Please help, because I really don't want to have to buy new DVD players. Thank you!

Answer
Only the manufacturer will be able to tell you what that code is saying. Like you said, it is very old and it is time for a new one. Most manufacturer have stopped producing stand alone DVD player due to the blu ray disc player will also play the dvd. The most reliable player in the market is made by Panasonic. You can get a model BD-75 for around $75 at Best Buy. Hope this will help you out.

Can American HD DVD players play standard definition DVDs from Other regions, at least NTSC ones?
I know the HD DVDs themselves have no region, im asking if it can play STANDARD DEF DVDs from another region. If not, I have a Region Free Pal->NTSC Player that has nice quality, but if the HD DVD player can do that to I would like to get rid of some of the clutter.

Answer
The above answer is wrong, HD DVD is region free, I know because I have the european version of Terminator 2 because the Blu-Ray doesn't have the extended version only theatrical and it plays on my player.

What is the difference between an HD DVD Upconversion DVD player and a regualr HD DVD player?

answerman

I've been seeing these HD DVD Upconversion players all over the place and are ALOT cheaper than an HD DVD player. What's the difference? I own an HD compatible TV. Does that have anything to do with it?

Answer
Pretty much, the difference is the price. I got a DVD that upconverts to HD from Walmart for less than $40 including the HDMI cable. (You have to use an HDMI cable for any type of HD, whether it's upconverting or solid HD)

I have also used a High Def DVD player on my TV with no difference to speak of. So save yourself some money and get the DVD player that upconverts

The link will take you to the one I have. It is a Magnavox and works just excellent! and, it's even a little lower in price now. Keep in mind, HDMI cables can cost upwards of $30, but for $34.88 you can get the player along with the HDMI cable.

Jim

Im would like to hook my Network Blu-Ray disk player that is eithernet ready but its not wifi ready`. Can I use my LapTop that is wifi to my dvd player to recive netflix on my tv?

Answer
ToTo raises an excellent point that I didn't even consider - sharing your Internet connection from your laptop with your BR player. It may be what you need.

You could get your BR player on your network by either using an Ethernet WIFI adapter or by using an Powerline Ethernet adapter/bridge.

With Powerline Ethernet you usually get two adapters. One adapter plugs into an A/C outlet near your player, and you connect the player's ethernet to the adapter. The other plugs into an A/C outlet near your WIFI router, and you plug another Ethernet cable into the second adapter from your router. Then the magic should happen - your BR player should appear on your network. I've used such adapters and they've performed well for me. I think they work well and are cheaper and easier to setup than WIFI adapters. but that's your other option.

Are there any DVD players that can hook up to Netflix?

EquiGirl92

My sister told me about these DVD players that can connect to your wifi and even access Netflix. Is that so? Do you know of any? Links would be great :)

Thanks!

Answer
No. However most all Blu Ray players do. Look on the web. Just google "blu ray player".

Should I return my recently purchased HD DVD player and buy a much cheaper DVD upconverter instead?

best hd dvd players on ... Dvd Gps Navi Player in Dash 7
best hd dvd players image

Nick K

Is it worth the money to keep the HD DVD player? Doesn't it do the same function as an upconverter? Please correct me if I am wrong and tell me why it is so much better to have the HD DVD player.

Answer
Depends what you paid for it (and assumes you CAN return it) and what matters to you.

First, consider whether you can really benefit from HD DVD (or Blu-ray which gives identical audio and video quality). Basically you need a moderate to large HDTV .. say 40" or so and preferably 1080p. You also need to watch from a suitable distance (say, 1.5 - 3X screen size. lower number if a 1080p and higher if 720p). You also need an HDMI connection.

As an aside, I have an HD DVD player and don't find a sufficient improvement from HD disks to justify buying them, but I have kept the player for reasons that may become evident as you read on.

There are relatively few HD DVD disks (under 400, and Blu-ray is about the same), and many movies are not available on HD DVD. Disks are more expensive than DVD and previewed disks (i.e. cheap) are not (yet) available. So -- unless you shoot yourself in the foot and refuse to watch a movie unless it is in HD -- you will be watching lots of DVDs even if you have an HD disk player (either or both formats).

An HDTV will deinterlace (if required) and upscale an incoming 480i or 480p DVD video signal. However, some HDTVs don't do a very good job. Enter upscaling DVD players ... which may do a better job. But, only a good upconverting DVD player is worthwhile. Cheap models (certainly anything under at least $100-$125) just won't beat the video processing in most HDTVs (See the article at the link for a discussion).

HD DVD players (and Blu-ray) make good upconverting DVD players, and depending on what you paid it may be the most cost-effective way to improve the picture on all those DVDs you will still be watching for some time to come (years).

You can test this by comparing a DVD on your HD DVD player and on your present DVD player. Is the picture sufficiently improved on the HD DVD player to perceive a benefit?

If you can benefit from an upconverting DVD player, and the HD DVD player you have is about (or maybe slightly higher than) the price of a good upconverting (non-HD) DVD player (e.g. Oppo 981, $229) consider keeping it. It may help to consider the HD DVD player not as an HD DVD player per se, but as an upconverting DVD player that also plays HD DVDs.

So ... there are some factors to consider. Hope they help.

Where can I find an inexpensive HD DVD player?

Brian

Conisdering purchasing an HD DVD player, but I dont have that much to spend.

Also, do I need an HD TV to use a HD DVD player?

Answer
First of all, yes you need an HD TV to use a HD DVD player. One would be from Toshiba, which for cheap i would get a old model of it. Which would be HD-A2 model. It is about $230 on amazon.com on Overstock.com you can get an even lower model for about $220 which it owuld be worth it to get the newer one.

In general the answer is no as those devices are output only.

The cheapest solutions are two copies of the same movie or a portable monitor slaved off one player.

Then again you could do digital down loads on lap tops

can I plug in a portable dvd player into my 2004 prius?

Kathy

I would like to take a long road trip with my toddler, and my portable DVD player's battery only lasts about 2 hours. I would like to buy a car-plug-in to use in the Prius, but will it drain the auxillary battery too quickly? I've had trouble in the past with draining the battery, and don't want to be stuck somewhere with my toddler.

Answer
As long as the Prius is in READY mode, the 12V battery will not be drained. I've gone on many long trips in my 2004 with things plugged into the power ports and no problems.

The only time you can have a problem is if the "READY" light does not appear on the dash--then the 12V battery has to supply all the power required.

What do you think of a dvd/vcr combo recorder, they seem to be higly rated ?

best dvd vcr player recorder on home vcr recorders sanyo sanyo vhr 289 vcr recorder vhs player
best dvd vcr player recorder image

I Love Jes

I was searching reviews on DVD recorders and they seemed to lean towards dvd/vcr recorders. Is this because playing back a VCR tape you can stop and pause and it is easier to play back. I have found doing that with rented dvd's on my dvd player is a headache, if like the phone rings, with the old vcr, it was easy to stop and pause etc. Am I missing something at age 57 ;)

Answer
You want to copy off the DVD just so you can watch it at a later time and return the DVD on time.

As for the DVD/VCR combo. The more components a electronic device have, the more thing that can break or goes wrong. No, not highly rated but highly "over" rated.

There is a easier solution without the need to dub-DVD and skip this step all together.

Try netflix - You simply pay a small fee per month. $2.99/month and up. You pick and choose the movie that you want. Return it any time. Shipping time is usually 2 business day. DVD arrive with prepaid self address return envelope. It's like having a DVD Rental Store in your mailbox.

I have a different plan other than the $2.99 one. I get movie coming in each and every week. I don't ever have to be concern with late fees. I watched them anytime, return them anytime. Since they are coming in through USPS, they are protected but the U.S. Goverment. hahaha...

What would be the advantage, if any, to getting a dvd/vcr player recorder with a digital tv tuner?

I have a tv with a cable card but may get the dvr cable box and want to know what would a dvd player/recorder with digital tuner allow me to do that one without a tuner would?

If you already have cable TV service and a HD-DVR, then the DVD-recorder with digital tuner will not be as useful to you. However, there are still a few things that you can do with a DVD recorder with a digital tuner .. I'll explain.

For the record, you would want a DVD recorder with a QAM tuner in addition to the ATSC. The QAM tuner will be able to tune into the digital channels that the cable company does not encrypt (i.e. in the clear).

If you have a HD-DVR from the cable company, they do not allow you to record VOD (Video On Demand) shows/movies to the DVR. So if you wanted to record some shows to play on another TV, you're out of luck ... well, not so if you also have a DVD recorder.

Here's something that not everyone knows. Most cable companies pass VOD unencrypted. So any device with a QAM tuner will be able to tune into VOD shows. It's pretty neat to be able to watch what your neighbors are watching, but you're at their disposal in terms of the FF/REW.

Let's say that you want to record a few episodes of SpongeBob off of the Free OnDemand "channel". What you can do is order it on the DVR. Tune into that channel on the DVD recorder (it might take a little searching). Then cue up the DVR and DVD recorder and record.

Now, is this "feature" worth the additional money to step up to the digital tuner model? Depends on you, I guess. Personally, I wouldn't buy any recording device that didn't have a digital tuner.

Do regular video formats work on a dvd player?

Green Arro

Like avi or xvid? I have just bought a DVD player for my uncle and so far he played only dvd format movies on it but I wanna give him a normal avi on a cd. With it play? What about a normal sub or txt subtitle along with the video file?

Answer
It depends on the DVD player. Read the manual.

Some will handle VCD, or Divx, but not raw video files burned on a CD.

What is the maximum resolution and (file) formats supported by a dvd player with HDMI output?

xenos mc

If I buy a dvd player or recorder with HDMI output can it play files recorded in High Definition with .wmw or .mkv extensions or I must convert them to .avi (with Xvid or Divx encoder)?
Also I would like to know if files recorded in HD resolution (720 or 1080) can be played by a dvd player. Thanks.

Answer
Plain old DVD (the movie format - not the physical medium) is 480p. An upscaling DVD player using HDMI can stretch that to 1080p, but the picture quality won't be as good as a blu-ray disc, which is recorded in 1080p so no upscaling is required.

If your upscaling player supports other file formats, like Divx, they should definitely support 720p, but I don't know about 1080p. You'll have to check the manual for details on what formats and versions it supports specifically. In this case, the DVD is just a storage medium, so you could put 720p or 1080p video onto the DVD and have the player output it correctly - assuming it supports the file format you wrote the movie to DVD with. Again, check your manual.

best 3d dvd player review image

Critter122

on January 11th, i am planning on getting Piranha 3D, but after the terrible 3d quality of My Bloody Valentine 3D, i was considering a blu ray player.
1. if i don't have a 3d tv, can i still get a 3d blu ray player to make the 3d look better than regular dvd?
2. if i just get a regular blu ray player, will the 3d still be a lot better than regular dvd 3d?
3. is blu ray worth it?

Answer
"1. if i don't have a 3d tv, can i still get a 3d blu ray player to make the 3d look better than regular dvd?"

No. A 2D TV is only capable of displaying older, anaglyph 3D, which uses color tinted cardboard glasses and is available on both DVD and Blu-ray.

If you want to see the true stereoscopic 3D effect that some movies on Blu-ray use (called 3D Blu-ray), then you need a 3D TV, 3D Blu-ray player, and electronically shuttered 3D eyeglasses.

You should know that "My Bloody Valentine" was released in two forms of 3D, anaglyph (DVD and Blu-ray) and stereoscopic (3D Blu-ray). The stereoscopic version that was recently released will have a better 3D effect (when viewed on a true 3D system) than the anaglyph version , but was still poorly reviewed when compared to other 3D Blu-ray titles: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/My-Bloody-Valentine-3D-Blu-ray/16128/#Review .

"2. if i just get a regular blu ray player, will the 3d still be a lot better than regular dvd 3d?"

Not really, the picture may look a little sharper, but that's about it.

"3. is blu ray worth it?"

It is if you have an HDTV that is 42" or larger.

What should i buy first? A new 42' LED Vizio 3d tv or a new soundbar such as the sony htct260?

Taylor

I'm tight with money right now and I am going to buy one or the other, I've never had a Soundbar before but neither have I had a 3d TV, what should I get first?!

Answer
First off you will need a tv and then a sound bar. I would not waste my money on a 3D technology that is not supported by software. Keep in mind, to watch in 3D you will need the following: 3D HDTV, 3D blu ray disc player, 3D blu ray disc movie (at this time there are only 180 titles available in 3D and they are mainly animated movies from Disney) and 3D glasses for each person. The price is higher for any 3D product. Vizio is a bargain price tv that is not very good in quality or reliability. Sony is not know for making very good sound system and the quality and reliability have dropped over the years. I never had any Sony product that have lasted over 3 years. The first DVD player model 7000 and 7700 the following year and paid over $1,100 each. The first HDTV by Sony and paid $6,400. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on all products for a home theater. If you read yahoo questions all the time, you will notice that 95% of tv problems comes from LCD or LED tv and 95% of those are the bargain price tv. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Hope this will help you out.

Q. I copy and paste the MP4 file onto a blank DVD but it just says it needs to burned using a certain program.

Do I need to convert the MP4 file? What program would I use? I specifically want it to play on a normal (region 2) DVD player. Any help? (: I'm using Windows 7.

Answer
i think you should convert your mp4 file to avi, i suppose its going to work like that, as far as i know avi is optimized for burning to dvd.
if youre looking for a good converter for both windows and mac i can recommend you audials tunebite, ive been using their products for some time and they work pretty good. and if youre not looking to invest any money into a new soft, i think you might be able to do the converting using one of their demo versions. but its a pretty great soft, if you take a look at audials one for example youll see its kind of like an all in one soft, does recording, burnind to dvd, file sharing, converting of course and some other cool stuff. anyway, this is a step by step guide on how you can convert mp4 to avi, if you wanna take a look and make an idea about how converting works:

All you need to do is install updated device drivers for your cdrom from acer.com. Once you arrive, you will need to visit support then downloads. You will not be charged for your download, ensure to retrieve all updates and patches for your cdrom and that they are for the vista operating system which happens to be fully compatible with windows 7.

how do I shut down my computer after watching a DVD if I fall asleep. Is there a sleep timer like a TV uses?

tamster52

I like to use my laptop as a DVD player when I go camping. Problem is I fall asleep, movie is over, but computer stays on. Then the light of the computer screen wakes me up later. Is there such thing as a "sleep timer" for your laptop? Like the ones that TVs have?

Answer
Sleep mode can go by many different names, including Stand By (Microsoft Windows 95-Server 2003), Sleep (Mac OS 8)-(Mac OS X) / (Windows Vista,Windows Server 2008), and Suspend (Linux).

When placed in this Sleep mode, the computer attempts to cut power to all unneeded parts of the machine. Because of the large power savings, most laptops automatically enter this mode when the computer is running on batteries and the lid is closed.

Though Sleep and Hibernate are generally thought as two separate functions, modern Macintoshes, Windows Vista (termed Hybrid Sleep), and some specially configured Linux machines also feature a variation of Sleep mode that incorporates the strengths of Hibernate. The RAM is copied to the hard drive before sleep mode is initiated, preserving the RAM contents in the event of a power loss.

I'm not sure when it happened, but any DVD I insert to my Compaq V2000; WinXp SP2 laptop it has to play through a program called InterActual. Even when I go to My Computer, the InterActual icon shows up; if I try to play it through InterVideo or WMM. It's all producers...Univerisal, Paramount, Columbia, etc. I've tried to unistall the software all together, but when I insert the movie it MAKES me reinstall it to view the moive. The only reason why I don't like this player is because it doesn't give me the same options InterVideo gave me or the video settings that WMM gives me. What is wrong? Is this permenant? 10 points to the first answer that works they way I want it.

InfraRecorder
is an open source utility that doesn't skimp on features or accessibility. Once installed, you'll notice you can either launch InfraRecorder or InfraExpress. The latter version features a slimmed down interface with wizards for burning data, audio, and video discs. It's sort of InfraRecorder for dummies. The full feature gives you a ton of options that might confuse folks used to using Nero Smart Start.
Here are a few of the things you can do with InfraRecorder:
* Create data, audio, video, and mixed-mode discs
* Record dual-layer DVDs
* Four methods for erasing discs
* Record disc images (ISO and BIN/CUE)
* Scan SCSI/IDE bus for devices and capabilities
* Create disc copies using temporary disc image
* Import session data from multi-session discs and add more sessions
It doesn't look like there's support for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, but the product is still under development and new features are being added all the time.

Handbrake
http://handbrake.m0k.org/
Unique but essential
Handbrake enables you to stick a DVD in your DVD drive and have the
contents of that film stored to your hard drive in a form that can be
read by pretty much any media player. I often use it to put a few
movies on my laptop for travel purposes, so I don't have to worry
about keeping track of DVDs while on the road.

Use videos as screen savers
Forget pictures in a screen saver. Use this program to have your
favorite digital videos as your screen saver.
Set the screen saver to play videos as-is, or have them stretched to
fill the screen. You can also mute the sound so the screen saver won't
spook you if you're elsewhere in your house.

Mix, edit and share videos online
There's no shortage of video-sharing sites nowadays. You can upload
or watch videos on sites like YouTube and Yahoo! Video.
However, most video sites offer little flexibility. To edit or mix
clips, you need your own software.
Jumpcut is a video-sharing site that gives you more control. In fact,
it lets you take over others' videos as well.
As with other sites, you can upload your own clips to Jumpcut. It
provides an online video editor, so you can cut and remix your clips.
You also can upload still photos and arrange a slide show. Jumpcut can
import pictures from Flickr, the popular photo-sharing site.

You can upload videos and photos through the site or via e-mail. In
e-mail, simply include your artwork as an attachment. Jumpcut will
automatically add it to your account.

Jumpcut allows you to remix other members' videos. You can reorder the
scenes or borrow footage for your own videos. The original version
stays intact, so you won't step on anyone's toes. You can restrict
your clips from others if you wish.

Jumpcut is still in beta (testing), so it may have a few kinks. It
recently became part of Yahoo!. That means you can join Jumpcut using
a Yahoo! ID.

You can cut or move scenes around. There is also a good collection of

VirtualDub makes navigation easy with buttons to skip through a video
to find clips. It can even be set to detect scene changes to help you

Why can't I play a DVD on my computer? How can I make it work?

Q. I have Windows XP.
I've never tried playing a DVD on my computer before because I have a dvd player. This is a dvd for my statistics class, so i cant simply view it on my tv, i need to do stuff. It won't play on my computers because I think I don't have a dvd decoder.
What do you guys think is the problem and how can I make it play?

Answer
Make sure your computer actually has a DVD drive in it.

It should say "DVD" on the front of it.

If it does say "DVD" on it, try viewing the DVD using the free open source program "VideoLAN," AKA "VLC Player."

How do I find out if my VCR player will play PAL format tapes?

best dvd vhs player combo on Toshiba RD XV59DT DVD & VHS VCR Player Recorder Freeview+ 250GB *TOP
best dvd vhs player combo image

tricksy_ma

I have a Magnavox MWR20V6 dvd/vhs combo and also an RCA VR355, I wanted to get a movie off Ebay, but it is ONLY available in PAL format.

Answer
You don't say what country you are in. If you are in the United States, then your VCR will most likely NOT play a video in PAL format. PAL format is used in areas such as South America, Asia, and Australia. The format is not compatible with US television. In the US we use the NTSC standard (and now ATSC for hi-def).

Transferring video from VHS to computer, is it possible?

Anonymous

I have a DVD/VHS combo player. It has an HDMI output, and my computer has an HDMI port. So, can I hook them up and use some kind of software to record what's on my VHS tapes to my computer? The VHS tapes are home made, not copyrighted stuff, if that matters.

I know I can transfer to DVD in the same unit but I can't seem to finalize my discs, and I just want it on my computer anyways.

Answer
Yes let me find the link quick on YouTube.

If i bought a region 1 dvd player will i be able to play it on my tv in the uk?

best dvd player android on Universal 7
best dvd player android image

Tomoya

there are certain programs on DVDs that are only on region 1 types,so i have to buy a region 1 dvd player.

Answer
Believe it or not that is a tricky question and here's why:

DVD players are typically sold to play DVDs by region code and usually only sold in the region prevalent to the standard. However, there are several players on the market that are known as "multi-region" capable and have the ability to play any region format. Likewise some are even capable of software upgrading to the region it resides in (mostly internet capable and blu-ray at that) Simple enough....

Here's the tricky part (and in laymens terms as best I can describe) depending on the DVD being played, it may ONLY recognize a region "x" and not a multi region player. Additionally, and where most problems occur, is the modulation (the video signal being pumped out) can vary WILDLY from country to country. We use ATSC and NTSC in the US, however many foreign countries use PAL and SEACAM standards (read on for WHY). Additionally the power supply of the DVD player may not support the voltage FREQUENCY of the country intended for use. We use a 60Hz 120V based system in the US but many countries outside the US may use a 50Hz 220V system- most of the power adapters available may change the VOLTAGE but do nothing for the FREQUENCY.

Long story short and a pretty common occurrence:

You may have a multi region DVD player with a Radio Shack 20 dollar power adapter thinking all is well, but when you arrive- SURPRISE!! Your picture has a nifty white bar rolling through it and that's assuming you found an actual compatible connection on the back of the TV you're using!

My suggestion: don't bother taking it. Buy a NEW one when you get there (they're basically disposable nowadays). OR better yet, buy an iPad or a Android Tablet BOTH capable of playing overseas by way of flipping a switch in the settings- and load your favorites for WHEREVER you go!

Is a up converting DVD player worth buying, does it work good with a HDTV?

best dvd players under 50 on gametrailers 26314]
best dvd players under 50 image
Q. Is a up converting DVD player worth buying, does it work good with a HDTV?

Answer
Upconverting DVD players (or blu-ray players for that matter) are only worthwhile if you have a HDTV. They will do nothing to enhance your image on a regular TV.

Since blu-ray players will also upconvert DVDs on HDTVs, the only reason to buy just an upconverting DVD player instead of a blu-ray player is the fact that upconverting DVD players are under $50 whereas blu-ray players are about $150.

Can a Gateway laptop play a dvd from another region?

AvYY

I am planning to order dvds from England and I heard I have to have an all code dvd player. Since I don't have that, can I just play the dvd in my Gateway laptop???

Answer
By law your computer DVD player is region locked. You are allowed to change the code 5 times and then it will lock to the last region that you used forever.

There are several ways to get round this, but my answer wold probably be deleted by YA if I were to tell you.

You can buy cheap all regions DVD players in the UK. Just go to Amazon .co.uk and search for multi region DVD player. The have several for under 50 pounds.

How to program my RC010SR Marantz Remote to my DVD player?

best blu ray dvd player 3d image

Chris

I don't have my user manual for my remote and am trying to program it to control my new 3d Samsung blu ray DVD player.

Answer
I have a RC 5500SR and I can't imagine that they are that much different:
Turn off the Samsung DVD player.
Press the function selector button for DVD and the SETUP button at the same time. Hold until the indicator light blinks twice. Enter the four digit code for the Samsung DVD player (see below). If it is the correct code the DVD player will turn on or will respond to the ON/OFF button on the Marantz remote when pressed. If not, repeat the above procedure with the next code on the list:
0517, 0600, 0847.

What type of HD cable do you need to connect from your blu-ray player to the TV?

Hot Chocol

I recently got a new HD TV and I already had a blu-ray DVD player, the installer told me to get an even better picture on my TV I should buy a "HD cable" to connect from my blu-ray player to my tv. What type of cable was he talking about and does it really make a lot of difference in picture quality?
Thanks!

Answer
HDMI cable which is used for High Definition. There are a couple of different HDMI cables, but the most important to remember is that a $100 cable and $30 one will show absolutely no difference, so don't get caught by those sellers trying to make you buy an HDMI cable for $100.

You can check here for more information on HDMI cables (there's versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_1.0_to_1.2

Generally, you'll want an HDMI 1.3, or if it's for 3D, you'll want 1.4. It usually is written on the box/bag which version it is.
