there are certain programs on DVDs that are only on region 1 types,so i have to buy a region 1 dvd player.
Answer
Believe it or not that is a tricky question and here's why:
DVD players are typically sold to play DVDs by region code and usually only sold in the region prevalent to the standard. However, there are several players on the market that are known as "multi-region" capable and have the ability to play any region format. Likewise some are even capable of software upgrading to the region it resides in (mostly internet capable and blu-ray at that) Simple enough....
Here's the tricky part (and in laymens terms as best I can describe) depending on the DVD being played, it may ONLY recognize a region "x" and not a multi region player. Additionally, and where most problems occur, is the modulation (the video signal being pumped out) can vary WILDLY from country to country. We use ATSC and NTSC in the US, however many foreign countries use PAL and SEACAM standards (read on for WHY). Additionally the power supply of the DVD player may not support the voltage FREQUENCY of the country intended for use. We use a 60Hz 120V based system in the US but many countries outside the US may use a 50Hz 220V system- most of the power adapters available may change the VOLTAGE but do nothing for the FREQUENCY.
Long story short and a pretty common occurrence:
You may have a multi region DVD player with a Radio Shack 20 dollar power adapter thinking all is well, but when you arrive- SURPRISE!! Your picture has a nifty white bar rolling through it and that's assuming you found an actual compatible connection on the back of the TV you're using!
My suggestion: don't bother taking it. Buy a NEW one when you get there (they're basically disposable nowadays). OR better yet, buy an iPad or a Android Tablet BOTH capable of playing overseas by way of flipping a switch in the settings- and load your favorites for WHEREVER you go!
