Making a VCD for Pioneer DVD Player 2022?

nasirsown

I have just bought a Pioneer DVD Player with USB Support, its manual says that it supports DivX and .avi format videos and can also play DVD-Video, DVD VR, Video CD, CD(R/RW), JPEG, DivX, WMA, Mp3 Discs. Currently I am concerned with making a VCD. I have some .flv videos saved on my computer, to which format should I convert these vdos and then how should I write them on a CD to make a VCD. Do I need any typical software to make a proper VCD, if yes! Please suggest one. Or a simple copy paste can do the magic.

Answer
If you wanna make a DVD that will work on a standard DVD player, you will need a DVD burning tool to do this. Just copy the movie to a DVD disc, it will actually not read by DVD players.

The best and most reliable DVD burning tool that I've ever used is a tool called DVD Creator. It's able to burn all kinds of videos to DVD disc. After that, you can view the DVD on DVD player. It also lets you edit videos and create DVD menus. Easy to use and professional.

You should really give it a try. You may check out at:
http://www.dvd-creator-converter.com/dvd-creator/

Best of luck.

I have a dvd with pictures on it in jpeg format. How do i make it play on my dvd player? ?

ToTheTragi

It works on one of my dvd players but not on the other 4 or my ps3.

Answer
DVD players are not required to be able to play JPEG files, only a few models do.

the alternative is to take them to a PC and use movie maker (or other program) to make a slideshow which can be viewed on all players.

What kind of DVD player should I get that also allows me to watch online movies from netflix?

paulbunyan

I want to get a DVD player that will play high Definition dvds, and will let me watch instant online movies from netflix

Any ideas?

10 points to the best!

Answer
For HD you need a Blu-ray player, not a DVD player. That said, one of the most reasonable is the Insignia player sold at Best Buy (it's their house brand). Netflix and Best Buy just announced a partnership (See link). In Canada the basic player sells for $170 (2nd link).

I suggest anyone replacing a DVD player these days consider a Blu-ray player. Why? Because, that way you have the capability to play Blu-ray disks if/when you find them at an acceptable price, and in the meantime Blu-ray players make a good upscaling DVD player for your existing collection.

Can I use a Dvd player that i bought in the States or Canada (NTSC) in Europe (PAL)?

Minimouse

Answer
NTSC and PAL are totally incompatible. However, my PAL player can play NTSC discs although image is a bit skippy. So maybe your NTSC player can also play PAL dvds. However, since you'll be connecting it to a PAL TV set, you must set the player's output signal to PAL. That's the most important thing. I can do that in my PAL player. But, if it outputs NTSC to your PAL TV, no deal.

Another thing is the REGION LOCK issue. Unless you hack it to make it zone-free, it will ONLY play REGION 1 discs. In Europe you can only get Region 2 dvds, which will definitely NOT play in a region 1 player.

My advice: Buy a new player in Europe. They're VERY cheap now that Blu-Ray is coming!! You can get a decent one for less than 50 bucks.

Where can I download a free DVD decoder program for Windows XP Media Player?

Calm Like

Answer
VLC may be worth a look:

I'm guessing that Windows Media Player will be able to use the decoder, but I'm not sure whether or not it will have to "find" it first, so let us know what happens.

Where can I get a free windows xp compatible dvd decoder for media player?

J.D.

I'm either looking for a decoder for windows media player or a free similar dvd player.

Answer
I would sugest you get the k lite codec pack because it comes with a dvd decoder (it allows you to play movies through windows media player) and more. I prefer the media player clasic that comes with the pack because it is faster, and supports more file formats including real and quicktime.
A codec pack has codecs for many types for video and audio with this pack there probably wont be a video or movie you can't play because it has it all, and the best part is its free

car dvd players?????

dazedconfu

are these worth it? what are some good brands?

Answer
I have an older model van and didn't want to put the expense into installing a DVD player in it permanently. We looked into portable DVD players but they seemed unstable and would mount lower than we wanted (most of them mounted in-between the front head rests so that people in the back seat would have a hard time seeing the screen) When we were getting ready to drive to Utah with small children we realized we needed something to keep them entertained. Then we found a dual screen portable DVD player and we love it. It is an RCA 7" 16:9 Portable DVD Player with Dual TFT-LCD Monitors. The two screens can be mounted separately and attach to headrests. (We put one on the front seat headrest and the second on the middle seat headrest) The screen is also the DVD player so there are only the two parts with a cable running between them. The nice thing about the one that we bought is that you can take it with you into a hotel room and it will play the DVD on a regular TV and it also comes with video games that can be played either while the second screen is watching a movie or displayed on a TV. (the video games aren't high graphics but are geared towards younger kids, although we had fun playing them too. Some of them are 80's knock-offs like frogger and centipede) The $200 was well worth the hours of quiet (non-fighting) travel time. Good luck!

Question about multi-region DVD players?

Crazy Cupc

I want to buy one because I live in Australia so my region code is 4 but I want to buy DVDs from US because they're much cheaper but their region code is 1 so they wont work on my regular DVD player. I wanted to ask if multi-region DVD players are simple to use? Is it just a case of plugging them in and there you go you can watch R1 and R4 DVDs? Or is there more to it than that?

Answer
They're as easy to use as any other DVD player. But remember that DVDs from the USA are also NTSC format, not PAL format, so you *might* need a player that also can convert from NTSC to PAL (or a TV that can display NTSC input in addition to PAL input).

(NTSC and PAL were the two main video formats used for analog video transmission. NTSC mostly was used in the USA, PAL mostly in Europe. Even though DVDs are digital, they still had to play on analog TVs so NTSC and PAL DVDs are slightly different).

where can i buy a multi-regional dvd player in australia?

Riddler

i really wanna get some dvd's off ebay.

Answer
I don't know where to buy a multi-regional dvd player, maybe you can try to make region free DVD from your region limit DVDs, then play the region free DVD on any region limit DVD player, you can try RZ DVD COPY, it can make region free DVD from region limit DVD, it can directly copy video DVD to new DVD writeable disc, to hard disk DVD folder, or to hard disk ISO file.

Work well, easy to use, you can download RZ DVD COPY from:
http://www.rzdvdcopy.com

hope it can help you.

how to connect a ps2 to a portable dvd player?

Faraaz

i have a portable dvd player and a ps2 but when i try to connect it ..it wont work i has a 1 video output and 2 audio autputs (female) and it wont work ......any idea on how i can make it work...im not old....its just the only console i don t use a wanted to see if there anyway this problem can be fixed

Answer
You don't. Most portable DVD players only have OUTPUTs - meaning they send a signal FROM the DVD player TO a TV. You need a DVD player with INPUTs and I've never seen one like this. (yes, I've often wanted to do something similar with my portable DVD player too.)

What you can do instead, is just buy a small 7"-10" LCD TV. They're about $100 or so and work just like a normal TV...only mini-sized. Your PS2 (and portable DVD Player) can connect to them just fine.

moving overseas - should i bring my dvd collection?

jasmine11

i am moving from canada to italy for i don't know how long. i have an american player that won't play italian dvds and i buy an italin player, i would have to buy italin dvds and i dont want to spend the $$ to rebuild my collection from scratch.

so i am going to bring my portable dvd player but have like 100 dvds. i am not getting them shipped to me so my options are either, bring all 100 dvds in a cd wallet, without the cases (leaving the empty cases in canada maybe forever) or just bring my fave 20 or so, cases and all.
to the pretentious person who told me to explore europe without dvds... im MOVING there forever. i ll want to watch a movie now and then.

Answer
Take your 20 faves, then whenever people come to visit you in Italy ask them to bring some more. When you go back for a visit grab some more. If you move back to Canada send them to your new address in the mail.

what voltage converter can i use for the portable dvd player bought in USA to be taken to India?

judy

It is just aportable DVD player I bought in US and I need a voltage converter so my DVD player will not get damaged when I use in India.
The last time I took a pictureof a waterfall, it took 3 seconds for the picture to get damaged. I need to protect my DVD player from being fried.

Answer
Use a step-down transformer.

It should be rate for at least twice as much current
(or twice as many watts)
as the total load that it will be required to supply.

For a portable DVD player, a 50 or 100 watt transformer
should be more than sufficient, but you may think of
other things you would also want to use,
so you may still have a good reason to buy a larger one.

Considering the cost of these things, the best idea is
to buy the largest transformer you can afford (and carry around).

what is a good DVD player that streams Netflix?

Mike

i don't care about Blu-ray or HD-DVD's, just want a regular DVD player that streams Netflix. would be good if it played VHS too, but doubt they make those anymore. user friendly, price range $150 tops
can you play regular DVDs on a Blu-ray player?

Answer
DVD player that streams Netflix? - XBOX 360
You can also stream netflix on a Wii or ps3.

You're not gonna find just a plain dvd player that does Netflix. You're going to need a Blu-ray player.

DVD discs can not have internet features. Blu-ray discs can

A lot of Blu-ray discs have an online feature called BD-Live (Blu-ray Disc Live), so most blu-ray players go online for BD-Live, so a lot of blu-ray players will include other internet features like you tube and Netflix

That vizio someone else mentioned is a Blu-ray player. Vizio doesn't even make regular dvd players

UPDATE because of your "additional details": Update - yes, Blu-ray players play DVDs and CDs. DVD players do not play Blu-ray Discs

Is there a type of mini DVD player that will allow you to get on the internet and watch netflix movies?

mikki

Answer
Dvd player that connects to the internet and plays Netflix streaming movies?

I'm afraid I haven't heard of such a thing either. But there's a good workaround this, you can for example record Netflix streaming movies for later watching on the mini dvd player or some other portable device.

I for one use some Audials software whenever I need to timeshift Netflix streaming movies or anything like that.

It actually works pretty great to record streaming movies from Netflix plus I also get to convert the recorded Netflix videos to whatever format I need for easier watching on any of my devices.

You should also give it a shot, should work good for your problem.

PC HD vs HD upscaling DVD player?

Nyx

Hiya,

I have a 8800GTS graphics card (HD) connected to my HD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable. I also have a HD upscaling DVD player connected using HDMI. Would there be any difference in the playback quality of the DVD? Do I still need the DVD player?

Sound quality is better though the PC.

Answer
It depends. Which one gives the better output picture. Older models of upscaling DVD player tend to give poorer upscaling results than newer models, but this is not always the case. In your eyes, which gives the better picture? Remember that you can upgrade the computers decoding software to get a better picture.

As the PC sound quality is better, unless the output picture is noticeably poorer, I would use the PC for upscaled DVD output, unless you have a need to quickly load and play a DVD (For instance if the PC takes a while to boot up).

Should I buy a DVD player/recorder or a DVD burner for my pc?

jlennon109

ok, I already have Dish network DVR, but it would be possible to transfer from that to a dvd, although I also want to put video camera movies onto dvds, idk if there are player/recorders that have usb ports that work very well

Answer
It really depends on what you would like to do!

If you want to record TV shows permanently to DVD, buy a DVD player / recorder.

But, if you are going to edit your home movies onto DVD's, I would recommend a DVD burner for your PC. There are many programs out there today that allow you to professionally edit your home movies, add titles, create professional looking menus, etc, etc. Very simple and easy to do!

With the standalone player/recorder, you do not get these options, just a cheap little menu.

Also, a dvd burner on your PC is alot more helpful when you want to burn copies of your homemade videos for family members. It can burn up to 24 times, whereas with the standalone, it does it in real time, like a VHS recorder.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

can you please tell me some car in-dash dvd players that play while driving?

C R

i dont know anything about car systems or car dvd player ... buying it for a christmas present - just want some generel knowledge on the item and what are some good brands? pioneer? alpine? thanks so much!

Answer
No car dvd players will come from the factory able to play while the car is in motion. There are ways to bypass that safety feature. I am a huge fan of Pioneer in general. I've never had an in dash dvd player but I have had the pioneer headunit i have now for five years and its still going strong. I don't know much about alpine. I think the Kenwood dvd players look cool. They are a bit more expensive though.

Car in dash dvd player. Valor ITS-700W?

ali_vegas_

So i have a Valor ITS-700W in dash DVD player. It doesn't allow me to play movies while I'm driving. I understand it's for safety issues, but I wasn't planning to use it while driving. I want to deactivate the safety screen (it turns blue unless my e-brake is up) because it's the main source that hooks up to my other 3 screens in the back of my car. And since it is a blue screen on the valor, all the other ones are blue screens. I was just wondering if anyone knows what I have to do exactly to deactivate the safety screen?

Answer
The way most e-brake cables work is a simple 5 or 12 volt line. As the e-brake is pulled up, the line gets "hot" and basically lights up a bulb on the dash. (Like a switch)

All you would need to do to deactivate the safety screen is to give the wire that determines whether the e-brake is engaged a constant voltage at all times. This would "trick" the DVD player to think the e-brake is always on.

Check your DVD player manual on which wire it is, and see if you can find the voltage. Then just pick a line that see's voltage when your car is in the "on" position, and tap into that wire. If you need anything else, feel free to message me.

Hope this helps!

can you buy a remote for a portable dvd player?

Patricia E

I think I lost m remote that came with my portable dvd player and it is really annoying because I can't rewind certain parts that I really like without the remote is there any way I can go and buy a new one thanks for the answers.

Answer
In the instruction booklet that came with the player, you'll find a phone number for the manufacturer. You'd have to call them to order a replacement remote. Probably be a little expensive, plus shipping cost. Easier to just buy a universal remote for the store for $10 or so, and enter in the code for your brand of player. The instructions for the universal remote will have a list of brands and their codes.

How to change bad looking subtitles on DVD I create?

Tammy

I've been working on some subtitles for a project I was in.
The subtitles look fine when I use VLC media player with the video + srt files.
I want to burn this project to a DVD but when I create the ISO file and check how the subtitles look, after adding them as an option with the DVD creating software I use (DVD Styler, but this happened with other softwares as well) the subtitles look very bad. I tried changing the font but it didn't help.

Here are examples of what happens -
http://s18.postimg.org/wmd374ttl/vlcsnap_2013_04_10_17h52m24s190.png
http://s13.postimg.org/9fcr8yah3/vlcsnap_2013_04_10_17h52m41s117.png

BTW - the default font on both VLC and my DVD creating software for subtitles are Arial.

(not interested in buying special fonts)

Answer
Subtitles on a dvd are actually bitmap images, not text. They're not part of the video either so the mpeg-2 compression doesn't affect them. Sometimes the conversion process from text to images just doesn't come out very good.

You could try making a test dvd ("just generate" to your hard drive, don't make an actual disc) with lots of short videos and just try different settings for the subtitle appearance. Font (including bolding), size, outline thickness, shadow and whatever other options are available can affect the quality. Don't forget to save the project so you can go back and see which settings looked good.
This would be a good question to ask at DVD Styler's forum (or other dvd authoring software) so someone who's already gone through all that can give you a recommendation. http://forum.videohelp.com/ and http://forum.doom9.org are other good places to ask for advice.
(results from both these sites come up if you google: best font for dvd subtitles )

A question about DVD and VCR player/recorder.?

L3

How can you tell if your player, that plays both DVD and VHS also records? I mean I'm pretty sure it does record, since I believe there is a record button on it. But would that be the type of 'recorder' that is needed to convert a VHS onto DVD, or is a 'DVD and VCR player/recorder' something completely differenet. And if not, how would one go about doing it?

In case you couldn't tell, I don't have a lot of electronics know how.
So there's no way to use just my player to convert my VHS that I already have recorded, onto a dvd?

Answer
It sounds like you have a VHS recorder/ DVD player unit. A unit like that will not convert a VHS tape into a DVD. What you need is a VCR recorder/DVD recorder.

If you let us know the make and model it should be easy to research online what type you have.

HENRY M

I have a Tru tech Portable DVD player and the battery is starting to wear out ,Cant play more than a hour.I need to get a replacemrnt. Is there a website that I can go to do buy this replacement battery

Answer
I don't know where to find a replacement battery for that portable DVD player. I even tried to find it on google and no luck. If your portable DVD player is under a year old, you might be covered for warranty. If it's older than that and you don't have a warranty extension, then you should just look for a new portable DVD player. They are under $100 now. http://www.walmart.com/search/browse-ng.do?ic=24_0&ref=125875.129742&fromPageCatId=62055&catNavId=62055

Were moving from Cali to Missouri and need...?

Q. Ideas to keep four kids from driving me nucking futsages from 15 to 8. I plan on buying a portable dvd playerbut I know that wont last three days in the car.Help please.

Answer
Well welcome to the Show Me State! You have a great idea about bringing the portable DVD player; they do sell a âpowerâ stripe that plugs into your lighter in the car. Coleman makes it and it cost about $25. Might be worth getting so you donât use up all of your battery power. They make portable travel games like Connect 4, Battleship, Sorry and that type of thing; they are cheap and fun and can be found at places like Wal-Mart or your local toy store. I would also bring things like crosswords, word searches and Mad Libs. This will keep the kids busy for a while and cheap form of entertainment. If you have some hand held video games bring those for the kids to do. If you donât have a system they sell hand held games pretty cheap and again it will keep the kids busy for a while. Why not give each kid a disposable camera and a âjournalâ or scrap book they can write about their journey and add the pictures later. Great way for them to preserve their memories of the move. Let the kids help with the trip, the ones that are old enough have them be the co-pilot for a while and read the map. Have each kid pick out a place they want to stop at before you go. That way they feel like they helped. Bring a deck of UNO Cards or playing cards, go fish can last forever! I would also bring paper, crayons, and maybe even color pages. The kids can draw for something to do. Make up a family CD of music have each person pick some songs they like and make a mixed CD.
There are plenty of car games that the family can play. 20 Questions is good, or I Spy takes up some time. Play car bingo you can either make up boards or print them from the web. Play Finish That Story have one person start and continue on to the rest of the car. Counting Cows game who ever gets the most wins. License Plate lingo is good, try to make words out of the letters on the plate such as GLD is girls like diamonds. License plate bingo make up boards with different states whoever gets bingo wins. License plate game keep a running tally of states that are different then yours again whoever gets the most wins. There is also Get 100 have everyone pick out a color, next they have to spot 100 things with that color. Whoever gets to 100 first wins. Slug Bug is always a good game, the slugging part is always optional. Take some trivia cards and ask each other questions, whoever gets the most right wins. Here are some other game suggestions:
TWO TRUTHS AND ONE LIE: The player tells the group three statements about himself or herself. Two are true and one is a lie. Everyone tries to guess which one is the lie.
GEOGRAPHY: Can be played with animals also. Start with an animal or a place name --California, for example. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of "California"
BUILDING WORDS: Build a word one letter at a time. Each successive player adds a letter and must have a real word in mind.
BUZZ: Try to reach 100 without making a mistake. Every time you get to a number that's divisible by seven (7, 14, 21) or has a seven in it (17), say "Buzz" instead of the number.
THE CAR NEXT DOOR: Invent stories about people in the car next to yours.
ALPHABET WORDS: Pick a letter and find words or objects starting with that letter. Move through the alphabet. Or play as a memory game - A is for apple; B is for __. The second player must remember what "A" was for, and so on through the alphabet.
SCAVENGER HUNT IN THE CAR: Make up a list of things to find along the road. Work as individuals or together as teams.

Here are some helpful travel game sites that we use to plan our trips:

This site has some really good ideas!

http://www.kidzworld.com/article/4707-road-trip-games-and-activities
http://www.radroadtrips.com/

I would also bring pillows so they can SLEEP that is always good! Be sure to bring a cooler with drinks and snacks. Have the kids go shopping with you and pick out things. I also recommend stopping at the rest stops for lunch, bring sandwiches, chips and veggies. Stop for lunch at the rest stop the kids can play on the playground or run around and get some energy out. If you can bring a ball and a bat or Frisbee something like that so they can play a game or two. When all else fails ear plugs (ha ha ha). Have a great trip if you let me know your route to MO I might be able to suggest some places, drive from MO to CA a lot. Good-luck on your move!

What's the best tablet to buy?

VernitaB

I need a cheap, durable tablet for my young kids to use. I have 4 kids so we do a lot of waiting (dr appts, ballet, basketball practice). All I need is something portable that they can share that takes a memory card (so i can download movies on there). I dont need any apps or GPS - just something to keep my kids attention! I was thinking the Coby Kyros ( I am NOT a Coby fan, but it got decent reviews on amazon) or the Archos 7. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

DVD players ???

Ben A

Hi, If I purchase a dvd player that plays divx does this mean that this player will play .avi files ?? It is so much quicker to burn a downloaded avi to a dvd+r rather than having to convert the avi to dvd and then burn it, and I was just looking to save time by finding a player that will play avi's.

Thanks

Answer
Many DVD players out there claim playing divx, however they don't always work.
The standard format is the .Vob/.Ifo - MPEG2 format, the files you have now are in AVI format..

I would recommend you download ConvertXtoDVD. Ive been using it for a year now, never had a problem!

It will convert your video files to the dvd format readable by all standard dvd players, then burn automatically to DVD.

it is easy to use, fast and it works perfect for me.. give it a try, you'll love it

1. Download ConvertXtoDVD here:
http://www.burner-software.com/AVI-to-DVD-Converter/AVI-DivX-XVid-to-DVD.php?exact=ConvertXtoDVD3

It can convert any video file.. like wmv, mpeg, asf, mp4, avi to dvd

2. Add or drag-n-drop as many video files as the DVD can handle

3. Insert blank DVD

4. Click "Convert"

5. Enjoy watching those video files on your home DVD player! =)

ConvertXtoDVD has a lot of extra nice features too,
for example you can make your own ANIMATED DVD menu or auto-generate it, add subtitles, auto-burn to dvd or save your conversion.

Does altec lancing have digital coaxial input. Will it be suitable for my pc and dvd player?

Answer
If the speakers you purchase come with a Dolby decoder, then this will work. However with most sound cards nowadays including a decoder, most 5.1 speaker sets are just that - JUST the speakers.

Some DVD players have speaker outputs on them directly, but you'll need to get some adapater cables so you can plug the computer speakers into the DVD player. Even then, most computer speakers use a pair of speakers on a single wire, while the DVD player is expecting 5 discrete connections. If your speakers are paired in this manner, they won't work with the DVD player.

If you do get a set that comes with the dolby decoder (it'll be a separate box) it'll have a digital co-ax input. However keep in mind that computer speakers are not very powerful. From personal experience, they'll work for a space about 6-10' square, but anything larger than that, and you'll want to buy some real speakers and a real receiver.

Answer
If you can fit a double din radio Id suggest getting a Kenwood in-dash DVD player (model# DDX6019 ). Its has a 6.95" touchscreen and can play DVDs. You can add a navigation unit later on if you want. I got mine from best buy web site(they dont sell it in store). Crutchfield( http://www.crutchfield.com/S-hTRe5VyeCrp/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=113DDX6019 ) sells them too.

car dvd players?????

are these worth it? what are some good brands?

Good luck!

Windows 7/Asus DVD player problem?

Q. My laptop won't play DVD's. It says there is a driver problem: A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)
What do I do to fix this?

Answer
If you canât find the right Asus drivers manually I would recommend just getting a software program that can do it for you. There is a program I use which will find drivers for just about all hardware devices. The best part is it takes a snapshot of your system specifications and matches the right driver to go with it. Perform a free driver scan at:
http://www.drivers-updates.net/company/asus-drivers.html
Also, you can get the driver from their official sites:

Ok I just upgraded from windows vista to Windows 7 when I had vista I could burn cd's just fine but today I went to burn a cd And I get this message

Windows Media Player could not complete burning because the disc is not compatible with your drive. Try inserting a different kind of recordable media or use a disc that supports a write speed that is compatible with your drive.

I know my dvd/cd rom isnt bad becuase I can still burn dvds but not cd's I even tried brand new cds fresh out of pack same error and 3 different types. But all 3 types I could burn just fine before the switch.

my dvd/cd rom Reads disc just fine and as I said I can burn dvd movies just not cd's anyone got any help for me!!!! Im going crazy trying to make music for my friends and dont post get a ipod

Answer
Have you tried using other software to burn besides windows media player? I use CDBurnerXP (it works on windows 7 despite having the xp in the name) and i have never had any problems burning discs although i have had a few problems with media player (not the particular one you are having). Just a suggestion :-)

EDIT:: I am confused...you said that it says no free space..and then you state that it is a brand new dvd/cd (i forgot which one you said) are you trying to burn that program to a disk..or did it say that error message when you tried to install it..if it said that message when you tried to install it then the hard drive that you use as your program directory is full and you will need to free up space to even attempt to install cdburnerxp

How does a DVD player work?

matt_rainf

Answer
The DVD Player
DVD Fact
The Sony PlayStation 2 was the first video game system able to play DVDs.
A DVD player is very similar to a CD player. It has a laser assembly that shines the laser beam onto the surface of the disc to read the pattern of bumps (see How CDs Work for details). The DVD player decodes the MPEG-2 encoded movie, turning it into a standard composite video signal (see How Television Works for details). The player also decodes the audio stream and sends it to a Dolby decoder, where it is amplified and sent to the speakers.

The DVD player has the job of finding and reading the data stored as bumps on the DVD. Considering how small the bumps are, the DVD player has to be an exceptionally precise piece of equipment. The drive consists of three fundamental components:

* A drive motor to spin the disc - The drive motor is precisely controlled to rotate between 200 and 500 rpm, depending on which track is being read.

* A laser and a lens system to focus in on the bumps and read them - The light from this laser has a smaller wavelength (640 nanometers) than the light from the laser in a CD player (780 nanometers), which allows the DVD laser to focus on the smaller DVD pits.

* A tracking mechanism that can move the laser assembly so the laser beam can follow the spiral track - The tracking system has to be able to move the laser at micron resolutions.

Inside the DVD player, there is a good bit of computer technology involved in forming the data into understandable data blocks, and sending them either to the DAC, in the case of audio or video data, or directly to another component in digital format, in the case of digital video or data.

The fundamental job of the DVD player is to focus the laser on the track of bumps. The laser can focus either on the semi-transparent reflective material behind the closest layer, or, in the case of a double-layer disc, through this layer and onto the reflective material behind the inner layer. The laser beam passes through the polycarbonate layer, bounces off the reflective layer behind it and hits an opto-electronic device, which detects changes in light. The bumps reflect light differently than the "lands," the flat areas of the disc, and the opto-electronic sensor detects that change in reflectivity. The electronics in the drive interpret the changes in reflectivity in order to read the bits that make up the bytes.

The hardest part of reading a DVD is keeping the laser beam centered on the data track. This centering is the job of the tracking system. As the DVD is played, the tracking system has to move the laser continually outward. As the laser moves outward from the center of the disc, the bumps move past the laser at an increasing speed. This happens because the linear, or tangential, speed of the bumps is equal to the radius times the speed at which the disc is revolving. So, as the laser moves outward, the spindle motor must slow the spinning of the DVD so that the bumps travel past the laser at a constant speed, and the data comes off the disc at a constant rate.

An interesting thing to note is that if a DVD has a second layer, the start of that layer's data track can be at the outside of the disc instead of the inside. This allows the player to transition quickly from one layer to the next, without a delay in data output, because it doesn't have to move the laser back to the center of the disc to read the next layer.

dvd player?

i have a rather expensive dvd player that wont play a certain disc without the picture breaking up, however, when i put the same disc into my computer it plays like a dream with a clear picture. whats wrong.

Answer
One possible reason, poor disc condition that can be caused by poor physical condition and / or poor recording from disc manufacturer. As the result, picture breaking may be detected in dvd player as data streaming is affected by empty memory buffer. Memory buffer (size) is bigger in computer device, and it can handle much more error correction and ensure the data streaming.
Another possible reason, if the dvd player is rather new, the optical pick-up unit (OPU) in the dvd player may be having certain quality problem. You may consider to bring the player to service centre.
Last, if the dvd disc is not original and licenced copy, some expensive dvd players in the market are known to perform poorly while playing those discs ......

Is there any region free player software for me to play on windows 7?

Charlse

When I try to play my DVD, the system always inform me to set a region code, sometimes it still suck to play DVD player software. What about another one

Answer
All the above is good advice - there are other choices too - plus you can get a small free app to do it in windows media player. (Major Geeks may have it)
Try AfterDawn.com, Ask Leo, Gizmo's, or Widows Club for sage advice.

There are also free codec packs which may/may not help you (Klite is biggest, but not the only one)

My windows 7 media player never asks me to set a region code. Sorry, I can't remember how/if I actually tweaked it.

Should I buy a portable DVD player or laptop to entertain my kids for vacation travel?

Mommymushb

I would like something that plays DVDs, but not sure if it's worth it to instead purchase a laptop with DVD playing capability. That way we can use it for the internet, and games as well.

Answer
I would suggest the laptop because you can do a lot with it. It will cost way more than just a portable DVD player. Also, keep in mind that portable DVD players will run much longer oin a charge. Most laptops won't even play a full DVD before dying on battery power.

If you are looking to go cheap and keeps the kids quiet, get a portable DVD player. A headphone splitter will allow them both to listen and you don't have too. Also, there is very little support or troubleshooting needed when using a basic device like this.

If you have money to burn, get a laptop for em, but it will never run tat long on one battery while spinning the DVD, lighting the screen, running the processor, etc... You will also be opening up a can of worms as far as protecting your children from the internet..
