Can I make a DVD from my SD card that will play in any DVD player using Roxio Creator 2011?

No Koolaid

I shoot some video at Christmas time of my granddaughter using my D5000. I've been told that if I burn it to a DVD, that the DVD will only play in the computer it was created on? I've also been told that I can't ever edit the video once it's on the DVD. Any advice on this would be appreciated!
Edit: I know, shot not shoot!

Answer
If you wanna make a DVD that will work on a standard DVD player, you will need a DVD burning tool to do this. Just copy the movie to a DVD disc, it will actually not read by DVD players.

The best and most reliable DVD burning tool that I've ever used is a tool called DVD Creator. It's able to burn all kinds of videos to DVD disc. After that, you can view the DVD on DVD player. It also lets you edit videos and create DVD menus. Easy to use and professional.

You should really give it a try. You may check out at:

Best of luck.

My Blu-Ray player can play DVD but not Blu-Ray?

psych23232

I asked about my Blu-Ray player before, Panasonic DMP-BDT210, that it can't play my Blu-Ray movies.

But my mother put in a DVD movie and somehow it plays the DVD. But when I put in a Blu-Ray movie, I get the message "Cannot read, check the disc."

That doesn't make sense to me. This is a Blu-Ray 3D player and it played Blu-Ray movies before but now it can't read them, yet it can play DVD's and CD's?

What the heck is wrong with the player?

Answer
First of all have you ever updated your 3D Blu-Ray player's firmware before from the default that came along. IF NOT go to Panasonic's website and look firmware to your model of your Panasonic player. Sometime you need to do that in order to play certain movies, IF there are NO parts problems. When I first got Terminator 2: Judgment Day Skeynet Edition it would not load up to the menu screen and stay at the loading wait on my Pioneer BDP-51FD. So I looked online for info, and that got me to do my very first firmware update, and NOT leave it at the default firmware that came along. This was back in late May or early June of 2010. After I updated the firmware to 1.65 from the company's site. I had never update my Blu-Ray player's firmware since I got it in mid February of 2009.

I had this problem when the remake of True Grit was released back in June of 2011. I got it the second or third day. The first time I put it in my Pioneer BDP-51FD it would not play, after it finished saying closed and went to loading. It would stay at that to a certain point(I would guess it always the same amount of time), and then a message would show up on the HDTV screen and player's little screen saying "Can't Play This Disc" and Unknown Disc. Back then I didn't know what was going on, The first seven time I have try it in the player, it did not play at all, and the same thing happen. Altogether I try the disc in the player 22 times with in a week and three days. It only worked three different times in the player. Then my guess was that either the disc hates my player the player hates the disc or this disc of True Grit out of so many made has problems. I just return it to Costco in the end, but before doing that I did try the disc on my friend's PS3, and it work the first time in there. I also tryed it on my uncle's Sony Blu-Ray player, it also worked the first time in there.

Move forward to mid August 2011 certain Blu-Rays I got way before the release of True Grit(remake) had worked in the my Pioneer player with no problems. The first one I notice with that problem was Casino, I had got that back in early April of last year, and it had always worked. Ever since mid August more and more started not to play on the player, with the same problem as True Grit. What I have notice was when it would not play and with the same messages is that there is no fan like spinning sound, when it does disc loading. I have also sat in front of the Blu-Ray player, with the TV sound turn down to listen and notice no fan like spinning sound. When I first had this problem I had also found two forums with sections devoted to my player. One is a section at http://www.avsforum.com, with 992 pages, and at http://www.blu-ray.com. As time went on the Blu-Rays that did not play on the Pioneer, that had worked before with no problems are The Magnificent Seven, Cop Out, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, Never Say Never Again(sometime works sometime don't), Spy Game, Apocalypse Now, Die Hard With A Vengeance(sometime works sometime don't), and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I Have not try all of my Blu-Rays in the player. Sometime new ones I get will not play the first time in the player like Taken, Pulp Fiction, Rounders, X-Men: First Class and The Guns Of Navarone. Sometime there are new one that will still play first time in the player, like Cowboy And Aliens. It just will it still play as time go by say two and half months later.

What the people on the two forums have said was either one of these is the problem

The laser lens is dirty (Use a Blu-ray laser lens cleaner to clen it the kind that come with a brush. IF it more stubborn, open up the player and use Q-tip to clean it.)

The laser lens is starting to die

The drive could be starting to die( one person said the drive for the model I have, have known problem)

They say it has nothing to do with the firmware update, which I did do since I updated mine from 1.65 to 1.71 when there was problems with playing True Grit and then to 1.72 when my older Blu-Rays started not to play that use to with no problem. And still the problem is still there for me.

One thing no one have said was how to tell is the laser lens just dirty and it not starting to die at all.

When I told my uncle about it, he told me it parts can't be dying at all. It must be like a record player when there a little piece of bread crum on it, it will not play the record in it right way. I have yet to buy a blu-ray laser lens cleaner and try that. I know all those disc will work in another player. Right now 100% no problems with the DVD and CD side of the Blu-Ray player.

The best thing for you is to ask a home theater expert or store a worker that sell this kind of stuff like at Best Buy and Magnolia Hi-Fi or those good mom and pop kinds. Also try the disc at friend and relative's player to see does it work. Last of all look for forums devoted to your player, and post questions

Is the Sony Blu-ray dvd player worth buying?

asdf

We have a 46'in Sony Bravia and the picture is not all that clear. Especially some of the dvd's. And if we get this blu-ray dvd player from sony. Would it really be worth buying, is it really clear. Is it worth buying. ????
Well none of your answers really helped. We are just going to get the blu-ray dvd player tomorrow. Because it's going to be 179 tomorrow at K-Mart.

Answer
Your mind is made up, BUT here's my '2 cents'
If your current setup doesn't look very good you may have a setting or cable issue. For example, are you using HDMI (or Component) cables? If not that alone will degrade the signal.

Potential improvement depends on what TV you have. You say Sony Bravia, but not whether it is 720p or 1080p.

If you have am 1080p model it will benefit from Blu-ray. If you can get it for a good price go for the Sony stand alone Blu-ray player (it may not be the cheapest or the most versatile (cf PS3), but it's an OK player and all you need to enjoy HD movies). Make sure you use HDMI to connect (and don't worry about buying expensive cables ... any Category 2 certified HDMI 1.3 cable <$20) would be a good choice (See monoprice.com)

On the other hand if you have a 720p/1080i HDTV you won't get that much improvement over an up-converting DVD player (at least a medium > high end one ... i.e. ~$70 or more). If you want to be future proof and can afford the extra the Blu-ray player can't hurt ... just don't expect a big video quality improvement vs the upscaling DVD player.

Final comment: Blu-ray may be worthwhile to you, but expect to pay a premium for the disks vs the same movie on DVD (Blu-ray disks are more expensive to buy or rent) and that's not going to change due to higher licensing and production costs.

Enjoy whatever you buy.

Would you buy a DVD player or a Blu-Ray?

I am going to purchase a player, but now that the Blu-Rays have come out, it seems foolish to buy a DVD player as they may be obsolete after a while.

i see no reason to buy a blue ray since i have an HD tv.....

How can you connect dvd player to your PC?

Up

How can you connect a standalone dvd player to your PC and watch movies?

Answer
You can:

A) Install a TV tuner card which will allow you to not only plug in a DVD player or VHS player, it will also allow you to view TV on the PC as long as you plug in either cable or an antenna.

There are many different ones but here is an example:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116007

Or

B) You can use a similar USB device, does pretty much the same thing but uses the USB port and you don't have to open the computer

Like this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116034

But why would you want to??? Doesn't your PC have a DVD drive?, if not you can install one or get an external USB one.

Can i connect my dvd player to my pc?

?

can i connect my dvd player to my pc?
my dvd drive is not working nd i have to transfer a file from a dvd to computer...
what do i do?
can i connect dvd player to computer using usb cable as both my computer nd dvd player have slots?

Answer
No.

DVD players for home theaters are NOT data devices. Find a friend with a working DVD drive in their computer and bring a USB Flash drive. Have him copy the files to the USB flash drive, then use this on your PC.

But if I try to play it on a second play only dvd I get an error message to effect "This disc may not play on this dvd. Eject disc".This dvd player works fine with other discs. What is wrong ?Is there any way I can adjust the 2nd machine ?

Answer
Some DVD recorders require that you 'finalise' the disc when all your recordings are finished. Also, not all DVD players/recorders will recognise the same type/manufacturer of DVD media.

DVD/VHS player?

jerryreed1

i want a DVD/VHS player that will record my old VSH to DVD?
is there suck thing?

if so can you guys tell me some sites that sell them?

thanks

Answer
Hi jerryreed13,

You can buy a combination VHS/DVD recorder everywhere. WalMart carries several kinds. The simplest and best way is to simply get a DVD recorder. You can find them everywhere for less then $100. You will feed the output of your VHS player into the input of your DVD recorder to copy tapes.

If you are wanting to copy pre recorded tapes you will need to bypass the copy guard. It is legal as long as you are backing up your own tapes.

Then you will need a device like "Sima T120 GoDVD". It removes the copy guard and enhances the picture. You plug your source into it and plug it into the input of your recorder.

Here is an example of one - http://www.heartlandamerica.com/browse/item.asp?PIN=54817&

Another one that will work is the Digital Video Stabilizer. They work like a charm. Go here to read about and see an example - http://www.qualitekindustries.com/vidstab.html

Should I get a DVD player installed in my new car (for the kids) or get an ipad?

Betsy C.

I have two kids and they like to watch movies on long car trips. I am debating whether to get a flip-down DVD player installed in the back seat or to invest in an ipad. I plan on having the car for 6-7 years. Will DVD's be a thing of the past by then? Can I get wireless headphones for the ipad?

Answer
I have used both flip-down DVD players and my iPad on car rides, and there are a lot of pros and cons to each. I'll list many of them here.

DVD Player Pros:

-They're usually less expensive, for one thing. Most are from $50-$300, while the iPad ranges from $499-$829 (depending on storage size and whether it has AT&T's 3G service or not).

-If you have an extensive DVD collection already and get a DVD player, then you don't have to get or set up anything else in order to see your movies- pop in your DVD and press play!

-DVD players are probably pretty durable in the hands of little kids because many DVD players (at least the ones that I've used) are made of hard metal or plastic (depends on the device though).

-DVD players are also pretty lightweight and portable (again, depends on the device).

DVD Player Cons:

-If the car trip is more than two hours long, you would need to bring more than one DVD, and DVDs can get scratched, broken, and take up a lot of space when in their cases.

-Watching movies is the only thing that a DVD player can do.

-Speaking from my experience only, many DVD players don't usually have a terrific battery life (a few hours).

-And they obviously have very small screens.

iPad Pros:

-The iPad wins hands down on screen size. Its dimensions are 9.56 by 7.47 inches, delivering an incredible HD viewing experience when you see the video in landscape mode.

-The iPad has what's known as in-plane switching technology, which gives it a wide viewing angle so that everybody in the back seat can see the movie- no more shouldering to get a better look at a movie on a tiny screen.

-You can buy multiple movies and TV shows from iTunes for $9.99-$14.99 each (or rent them for 30 days for about $0.99-$4.99 each) and download them directly onto your iPad (either by moving them from iTunes on your computer to the iPad, or directly from the built-in iPad iTunes app), and the iPad will hold them all easily, unlike a DVD player, which can only read one physical DVD disc at a time.

-There are many iPad apps that view videos too, ranging from the ABC Player (shows you recent episodes of ABC shows for free) to Hulu Plus (shows you 2,000+ episodes of many TV series for $10/month) to Netflix for iPad (allows you to stream thousands of movies on your iPad with a Netflix subscription, which costs anywhere from $4.00-$23.00/month, depending on your plan)

-There are also plenty of other options for non-video entertainment on an iPad once the movies are done; unlike a DVD player, you can play incredible HD games (many of them are free), read children's books on e-reader apps like Amazon's Kindle and Apple's iBooks or interactive one book apps such as Alice for iPad, and, of course, listen to iPod music, just to name a few.

-And the most important pro is that the iPad has a claimed battery life of up to 10 hours without charging, even with videos playing, so it won't die on you in the middle of the car ride (although I've seen it last for closer to 12 hours).

iPad Cons:

-The iPad is a little heavier than a DVD player, at about 1.5 pounds (this might cause your kids' arms to get tired, but you can prop it up with Apple's $30 iPad case).

-The iPad easily reflects direct sunlight and gets VERY smudgy from fingerprints after a while.

-Because it has a backlit screen, the iPad may give your kids eye strain if they view it for too long (although you can turn down the brightness in Settings -> Wallpaper and Brightness).

-It is slippery and its screen or titanium back can scratch or even break from a drop.

-If your kids want to watch the third party video apps or surf the web in the car, you would need the iPad Wi-Fi & 3G, which is more expensive and comes with a hefty AT&T plan of $15-$30/month for 150 MB-2 GB of data.

Unfortunately, there are no wireless headphones for the iPad that I know of, and even if they worked using the iPad's Bluetooth, I wouldn't know how they would work or what you would need them for.

And don't worry, DVDs don't seem to be in any danger of going out of style any time soon (if anything, they face a threat from Blu-Ray discs.)

Can I turn my cars navigation into a DVD player as well?

allybabes2

I have a Nissan Maxima with Navigation system. is there a program I can download into it to make a DVD player as well?
I would really like to be able to play DVD's in it.
Thanks,

Answer
The DVD Navigation player can only read dual-layer DVD-ROM information, not DVD Video. And there's no app I know that you could download somewhere into your Maxima to allow you to hack the DVD player.

Does anyone know of a good portable DVD player for a preschooler?

Jacque

My son is almost 4, and in the last year he has broken 3 portable dvd players and 2 full size ones. He does not break them on purpose, but we give him two hours a day to watch movies and he is a very independent child so he likes to work things for himself. Usually the door breaks, that holds the DVD in place. That is our most common problem. We are trying to find a DVD player that would not break as easily, that we could buy him for Christmas. We were thinking about the Fisher Price Kids Tough DVD player but I have read bad reviews on it lately. Any Ideas?

Answer
Buy a cheap one with a extended warranty that covers accidental damage. They will just exchange it for a new one when it breaks.

Any suggestion for a portable DVD player for the car that allows game system hookup?

momofdoubl

Would prefer a portable DVD system with dual screens, and would like to have it with a battery. I saw a perfect one by Venturer, an 8.4" dual screen system, but can't find it at any store online or otherwise. I tried to email Venturer, and message failed. I am at a loss for what other system might work. We want to take on a long road trip and let the kids hook up their game system for the hours on the road.

Answer
I only found the 9 inch. It does all the same as the 8, but the reviews on it were lousy.
Everyone had problems with the latch on the door cover of the DVD.

Here is another dual player. I don't know what your budget is but this will do the same. Reviews are 83% positive
Good Luck!

Vga to component to dvd player to tv?

Cameron

Well recently I bought myself a vga to component cable thinking i could hook my laptop up to my tv and watch some anime. I was wrong. something with my graphics card didn't sit right. well... I have a dvd player. so Could I connect my computer to the dvd player using the vga to component cable, and then have the dvd player send a signal to my t.v? since I can't make a direct link, I'm trying to substitute a medium here. My t.v doesn't have hdmi. (-,-) I have alot of cables. Vga to Vga, but no Hdmi to component, or Anything, so Help> I'm sowwy if this is confusing

Answer
The DVD player would need to have a component video input.
As far as I know, no player does.

Active electronic converters are available that can make possible
almost any desired connection, but some of them are rather expensive.

Be careful: There are a lot of bogus cables on the market
that appear to have the "correct connectors" on opposite ends.

[One example of the many rip-offs I've seen is a VGA - to - HDMI cable.]

These don't work because they don't change the signal itself
from one type to another.

When looking for a converter, make certain it "goes the right way".
For example, you seem to need a VGA - to - component converter.

A component - to - VGA converter would perform the the opposite function,
and would not serve your needs.

dvd player?

kennytucke

i have a rather expensive dvd player that wont play a certain disc without the picture breaking up, however, when i put the same disc into my computer it plays like a dream with a clear picture. whats wrong.

Answer
One possible reason, poor disc condition that can be caused by poor physical condition and / or poor recording from disc manufacturer. As the result, picture breaking may be detected in dvd player as data streaming is affected by empty memory buffer. Memory buffer (size) is bigger in computer device, and it can handle much more error correction and ensure the data streaming.
Another possible reason, if the dvd player is rather new, the optical pick-up unit (OPU) in the dvd player may be having certain quality problem. You may consider to bring the player to service centre.
Last, if the dvd disc is not original and licenced copy, some expensive dvd players in the market are known to perform poorly while playing those discs ......

How do you hook up the Dvd/VCR player to Digital Converter Box?

nick_1bee

Answer
The DVD/VCR player should have an antenna hook up in the back. Just hook the output of the tuner box into the VCR/DVD player like you would a normal antenna or cable. This should allow you to watch digital TV through the VCR . If it is just a DVD player and it does not have an antenna hook up you might have a hard time. All converter boxes and DVD players are different and they have different inputs and outputs. You can also get an input selector like the one shown here for around 20 dollars.http://www.nextag.com/Audio-Video-Selector-Switch-659073136/prices-html This will allow you to hook up 4 different video sources to your television.

Hope that this has helped and that I haven't just confused you with my ramblings.

Will a dvd player or vcr work as a tv tuner?

Nicole

I have a Toshiba 51HC85 CRT tv monitor/projector that doesn't have a place to plug in a coaxial cable. I have cable in my apartment that comes directly from the wall. If I get an old dvd player or a vcr can I use it as a tv tuner and then use a RCA (red, white, yellow) cable to hook it up to the tv? Will this work, and if so, how would I change the cable channels? Would I need the remote to the VCR or DVD player?

Answer
You might be able to use the tuner on an old vcr. You can't use a dvd player however, since it does not have a tuner. A dvd recorder might work though, since it is similar to a vcr and should have a tuner. Have you subscribed to cable service? If you haven't you would need to do that too unless your apartment gets cable as part of the agreement. Also, make sure they have not converted over to completely digital cable. If the cable company has, then you can't use anything but the cable box from the cable company.

addendum, forgot to address the changing of the channels. You would need the remote for the device that tunes the channels. Thus if you are using a vcr to do that, you would need the vcr remote.

What is an Upconverting DVD Player?

Jay H

Answer
An Upconverting DVD player sort of "blends colors together" so they appear less "blocky" if you're going from a LOWER resolution source (DVD player at 720x480) to a HIGHER one (HDTV at 1280x720 or 1920x1080).

The best example I can think of is let's say you had a "picture" that was two pixels total, side by side, one white, and one black.

If you "upconverted" this to three pixels, all side by side, the conversion would make the middle pixel grey. That way, it's less "abrupt" of a change from one pixel to the other. This results in a SMOOTHER PICTURE. Obviously it's slightly more complex than that, but that's the basics of what it's doing.

From a technical standpoint, check out the Wikipedia link in Sources on Anisotropic Filtering... that's mostly what it's doing.

Practically, "Upconverting" is nothing special. It helps a little, but IMHO DVDs look just fine on HDTVs that you WON'T GET A 'WOW' DIFFERENCE from an Upconverting player vs. a regular one.

If you're in the market for a DVD player, I'd most whole-heartedly suggest getting a REGION-FREE DVD Player. DVD Regions are mostly a scam by the MPAA to charge more for movies in the US and UK than elsewhere.

Best of luck, help I was able to help.

What`s up with "Upconverting" DVD players?

David G

I want to buy an upconverting DVD player to take advantage of my new HD TV. Problem is, I keep reading that these upconverting players will increase the resolution to 1080p. That`s great, but my TV only supports 720p and 1080i. Will they also upconvert to those resolutions as well, or 1080p only? By the way, does the Playstation 3 have the ability to upconvert DVD videos?

Answer
Upconverting DVD players scale the DVD image from 480 (vertical) to pseudo-HD by interpolating the existing image and filling in new lines of information. The way they do it varies somewhat, but in all cases the result, while an improvement on the original DVD, is only technically an HD image. In other words it is not as sharp as a true (e.g. Blu-ray or HD DVD) image.

That said, to answer your question, upconverting DVD players can output various 'levels' of HD -- which, technically is 720p or higher (i.e. 720p, 1080i or 1080p) -- so that the user can match the output to what their HDTV will accept.

The PS3 is both a Blu-ray player and an upconverting DVD player ... in other words it will -- via menu setting -- output Blu-ray at a range of output resolutions (up to 1080p) and will play normal DVDs at the same selected HD output resolution.

In general, 1080p output is only possible via HDMI, while 1080i and less is also available via component.

Finally, note that the quality of upconversion depends on the type of video processor/scaler built into the player. It shouldn't be any surprise that budget upscaling players (>$60-$70) generally do a less capable job that more expensive models. Arguably, the best upconverters are those made by Oppo (although several HD DVD and Blu-ray players are almost as good), but they are almost as expensive as lower end Blu-ray players.

If you have a 1080p HDTV and are willing to pay premium prices for disks, you may want to consider a Blu-ray player (e.g. the PS3) since it will give you better video and audio (via advanced audio formats on Blu-ray disks -- assuming you have the audio system to take advantage) than DVD will (even on an upscaling player. On the other hand, if you have a smaller than 40" 720p/1080i HDTV (particularly if it's not a top end model) a Blu-ray player (and Blu-Ray disks) is unlikely to give a significantly better image than upconverted DVD's on a medium quality (or better) player. If the HDTV is larger than 40", even if it's only 720p/1080i Blu-ray MAY be worthwhile (but it will depend on the quality of the HDTV)

Hope that helps.

how difficult is it to install an in dash navigation/dvd player?

Brian

I have a 2001 Chevy Blazer and I am considering purchasing an in dash nav unit, but I'm not sure I want to pay Best Buy $200-$300 to install it on top of buying the unit. I have installed basic car stereos in the past, but I have never installed a video/nav unit. I guess I am just asking, if it is really that much different than a basic car stereo installation? I wont be including a back up camera at this time, and from what I have seen it sounds like there is a wire that is "supposed" to be attached to the parking brake to prevent DVD's from being watched while driving, and that I will probably just bypass. So is there anything else I should know about installing one of these units?

Answer
since you have some experience in installing, install a dash nav unit should be no problem, just make sure it fits in your car so you don't any problems with the physical install, the wiring is pretty much the same, there are just some mores devices to be wired to the radio which you need to plug in into their respective sockets at the back

I am wondering if it ll fit in the dash well....Is it possible to remove teh storage pocket below the cd player?

car dvd players?????

dazedconfu

are these worth it? what are some good brands?

Answer
I have an older model van and didn't want to put the expense into installing a DVD player in it permanently. We looked into portable DVD players but they seemed unstable and would mount lower than we wanted (most of them mounted in-between the front head rests so that people in the back seat would have a hard time seeing the screen) When we were getting ready to drive to Utah with small children we realized we needed something to keep them entertained. Then we found a dual screen portable DVD player and we love it. It is an RCA 7" 16:9 Portable DVD Player with Dual TFT-LCD Monitors. The two screens can be mounted separately and attach to headrests. (We put one on the front seat headrest and the second on the middle seat headrest) The screen is also the DVD player so there are only the two parts with a cable running between them. The nice thing about the one that we bought is that you can take it with you into a hotel room and it will play the DVD on a regular TV and it also comes with video games that can be played either while the second screen is watching a movie or displayed on a TV. (the video games aren't high graphics but are geared towards younger kids, although we had fun playing them too. Some of them are 80's knock-offs like frogger and centipede) The $200 was well worth the hours of quiet (non-fighting) travel time. Good luck!

How should I choose which car DVD playerï¼?

Travis Hu

How should I choose which car DVD playerï¼
1.Specification()
2.Product Parameter(Navigation,Bluetooth,iPod Control etc)
3.Installation guidebook?
4.The best online store?

Answer
I am glad to answer your question. As your know, the car DVD player is used for navigation and entertainment, so you should focus on the navigation function and entertainment experienceã

If you like classic style, then you should choose button style, but I think the touch screen style should be better for you. Now the most of DVD player integrated cellphone function through Bluetooth, so the Bluetooth is necessary. Enjoy music, the iPod must be in your DVD player. The most important is the navigation map should auto update or can download new map from internet.

About installation, I think you choose a good auto repair shop to help you.

From my personal experience, I find http://www.autodvdgps.com is a good online store, they have good product, warm service. If you need buy a car DVD player, I advise you to choose this online store.

What would be a good DVD player download

Shyness

I'd like to know what would be a good DVD player download with a good Codec package included?

Answer
DVD has been around long enough that most of the software players available are pretty good. Theatertek has a pretty large group of devoted users in the home theater PC department, as does Power DVD and WinDVD.

Since you ask about a good codec pack, I'm assuming that you're also wanting to use the player to view other file formats like .AVI and .MP4. Power DVD, WinDVD, and Nero Showtime (bundled with the Nero Burning Suite) all come to mind as solid commercial packages. If your price range is more on the free side (these days, whose isn't?), my advice would be to download the Community Codec Pack and install it; this way, you'll be able to watch pretty much anything you want right on Windows Media Player--or on any of the provided media players in that package.

Community Codec Pack: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Linux users can normally take their pick from whatever their distribution supports, and there's normally an interface to aid in finding them already on the operating system.

My dvd player on my pc will play video?

BarbBranha

but when I try to copy anything it says no disk in drive. Ive run checks says all is ok. Changed brand of dvd still didnt work. Updated drivers still nothing. Any ideas whats next?

Answer
Hi, copy/burn anything to dvd disk, first you must have a right dvd burner drive(hardware device) on your pc, most dvd burner drives have a text "DVD RW" sign on drive panel, you can't use a dvd-rom drive to burn/copy dvd, so first you need to check your pc to validate there is a right dvd burner drive, if you have a right dvd burner drive on your pc, but still have this problem, I think you should clean the pc dvd burner drive lens, then try again, if still failed again, maybe your pc dvd burner drive was broken, you can use another dvd burner drive to have a try, or maybe there's a compatibility problem between this dvd burner drive and your dvd burner program, you can follow me to use RZ Free DVD Burner to test your dvd burner drive, it's free and easy to use, it can directly burn any files or folders to any dvd disk(DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc), and it provides two burn engine to improve compatibility, you can press "Option" button on software main interface to change Burner Engine, so I think maybe it can help you to solve this compatibility problem, you can yahoo or google search and download RZ Free DVD Burner, hope it can help you.

Where can I get a good DVD player with Headrest TV screens?

Ben

I was trying to find those headrest TV screens and a DVD player for my 2007 Dodge Ram but can't seem to find anything for my truck. Is there a good place to buy that? I went to Best Buy today and they were clueless and told me that they can only get those for SUV's. Is that true? Why not a truck?

Answer
There probably isn't enough business for a company to build vehicle-specific units for trucks. And at any rate, I've found that the folks at Best Buy are clueless in just about everything.

Here's one source for a generic unit that replaces the factory headrests. The mount is adjustable from 4-7" so it will fit most vehicles. Just measure the "posts" on your headrests to see if it fits. These are delivered with black, gray, and tan covers.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_385CLD700/Concept-CLD-700.html?search=headrest+dvd

Crutchfield will tell you if they fit.

If you are a first-time purchaser at Crutchfield you can get a $20 discount off a $200 order if you use a "friend referral code" such as mine, which is: p7sdj-hrx8q-9800g, plus free shipping. Oh!, I get a $20 merchandise credit too.

Is a up converting DVD player worth buying, does it work good with a HDTV?

Q. Is a up converting DVD player worth buying, does it work good with a HDTV?

Answer
Upconverting DVD players (or blu-ray players for that matter) are only worthwhile if you have a HDTV. They will do nothing to enhance your image on a regular TV.

Since blu-ray players will also upconvert DVDs on HDTVs, the only reason to buy just an upconverting DVD player instead of a blu-ray player is the fact that upconverting DVD players are under $50 whereas blu-ray players are about $150.

Can you help me fix my DVD player?

Rachel L

Whenever i put a DVD in, it sputters and clicks. Is it broken and is it worth fixing? If it's broken, does anyone know how to fix it?

Answer
If your player sputters and clicks with every DVD you put in it, it is time to get a new one, unfortunately. There are very few serviceable parts inside. Check if your dvd player is still under warranty (unlikely).

With DVD players with great specs around $50 - $70 (upconverting, hdmi output, etc), the labor and parts costs of a repair may not be worth it.

I just feel bad that so many consumer electronics devices (cellphones, dvd players, portable music players, some computers) are so cheaply made that disassembly and repair is impossible. It just adds to the pollution and waste of materials.

which media format would be best to use for a video that i want to burn to a cd-r to play on a dvd player?
mpeg
mpeg-2
avi
ac3
wmv
ogg
mov

Answer
Unfortunately, you don't have that freedom. Most DVD players will only play VCD's, which are in MPEG1 format. Some DVD players will play Divx, which is an AVI format. These are the only two possibilities for CD-R.

As for DVD's, these are in MPEG2 format.

Answer
Question: Can I play my recorded DVDs in other DVD players - What are the DVD Formats?
This page outlines the various DVD recording formats available to the consumer, and how each format relates to playback compatibility on other DVD players.

However, for a detailed look at what makes standard Commercial DVDs you buy at your local retail outlet different from the DVD recording formats discussed below, also be sure to check out my Quick Tip: What Makes Home Recorded DVDs Different Than Commercial DVDs.
Answer: There is no 100% guarantee that any DVD you make with your DVD recorder will play in all DVD players. Whether or not you can play a DVD you have made using your DVD recorder on most current DVD players (manufactured since the years 1999-2000) will depend mostly on the format used in recording the DVD.

Without getting into the technical aspects of each format (for more info check related links at the end of this article) the relevance of each format to the average consumer goes like this:

DVD-R: The most universal of recordable DVD formats that is used by computer DVD writers as well as most DVD recorders. DVD-R is a write-once format, much like CD-R and discs made in this format can be played in most current DVD players. DVD-R discs need to be finalized at the conclusion of the recording process (like a CDR) before they can be played in another DVD player.

DVD-R DL A record-once format that is identical to DVD-R, except that it has two layers on the same side of the DVD. This allows twice the recording time capacity on a single side. This format is being incorporated slowly on some newer DVD Recorders. Although the actual recording format is the same as DVD-R, the physical difference between a standard DVD-R disc and a DVD-R DL disc may result in less playback compatibility on some DVD players that normally have the ability to play standard single layer DVD-R discs.

DVD-RW: Recordable and rewritable format (like CD-RW) promoted by Pioneer, Sharp, and Sony. Discs are playable in most DVD players, provided it is recorded in the straight Video Mode and finalized. In addition, the DVD-RW format also has the ability to perform Chase Play, which is similar to Time Slip used in the DVD-RAM format (refer to the explanation for the DVD-RAM format). However, this function is available only in what is referred to as VR mode. DVD-RW recordings made in VR mode may not be as compatible with other DVD players.

DVD+RW: Recordable and rewritable format promoted primarily by Philips, with a host of partners, including Yamaha, HP, Ricoh, Thomson (RCA), Mitsubishi, APEX, and Sony. Claims to offer a greater degree of compatibility with current DVD technology than DVD-RW. The DVD+RW format is also the easiest to use, in terms of basic recording, as the discs do not need to be finalized at the conclusion of the recording process in order to play in another DVD player. This is due to the finalization process being performed during the actual recording process itself.

DVD+R: A record-once format introduced and backed by Philips and adopted by the other DVD+RW proponents, that is said to be easier to use than DVD-R, while still playable in most current DVD players. DVD+R discs need to be finalized before they can play in another DVD player.

DVD+R DL A record-once format that is identical to DVD+R, except that it has two layers on the same side of the DVD. This allows twice the recording time capacity on a single side. This format is being incorporated on most new PCs with DVD writers, but is slowly being introduced into standalone DVD recorders. Although the actual recording format is the same as DVD+R, the physical difference between a standard DVD+R disc and a DVD+R DL disc may result in less playback compatibility on some DVD players that normally have the ability to play standard single layer DVD+R discs.

DVD-RAM: Recordable and rewritable format promoted by Panasonic, Toshiba, Samsung, and Hitachi, which is not playback compatible with most standard DVD players, and is not compatible with most DVD-ROM computer drives. One of the unique features of DVD-RAM, however, is its ability (with its random access and quick writing speed) to allow the user to watch the beginning of a recording while the DVD recorder is still recording the end of the program. This is referred to as "Time Slip". This is great if a phone call interrupts your viewing or if you come home late from work and miss the beginning that important TV episode or televised sporting event. Another advantage of DVD-RAM is its extensive capability for on-disc editing. With its quick access speed, you can rearrange the playback order of scenes and delete other scenes from playback, without erasing the original video. However, it must be re-noted that the recording made is not compatible with playback on most standard DVD players.

Does anyone know of a laptop holder or harness for my car?

Paul

I want to put my laptop in my car and attach it to the front seats so my kids can watch DVD movies when we travel any amount of distance.

Is there any such product on the market?

Please dont reply telling me to buy a portable DVD player DVD player for the car!

Answer
using computer in the car is not always advisable as computer is very delicate to handle even if there is a good harness for that. just bear in mind if the road is so curvy, lot of holes, mountainous, rugged, etc.
if i were you, better buy a car navigator (GPS) that is equipped with DVD player, CD/CD-R player/MP3 player; HDD; ducking connectors such as iPod or portable players; with ducking connector for cellphone to check calls/emails on the main screen; and the like. though it's a bit expensive, but i guess it's more better and you don't need to attach and detach it anymore like of computer.
(mine cost for about $3,500dollars) but with lot more features aside from what i had mentioned above.
at any rate, there are lot of car harness depending on what type you want. check it either in car dealer shops or over the car shops.

Good Luck!

Knowme2wel

My boyfriend just bought on a few weeks ago and his birthday is coming up soon. I've been reading and some forums suggest to purchase an upconverting dvd player. Is this what's best for this particular display? I'm not sure and I need some help.

Answer
I dont recommend an up-converting DVD player these days when both HD-DVD players and some BluRay players are available for not much more.

The up-converting players are not true HD. They take standard def, magnify it and fill in some lines so it fills the space of 720 or 1080 - but it's not HD.

Your Boyfriends TV up-converts standard def. How do these look? Not as good as the real HD.

Get him one of the following:

- Toshiba HD-A3 (HD-DVD player): $199
- Sony PS3 (BluRay player0: $399
- HarmonyLogitech Remote: $130

High definition DVD upconverting DVD player or Laptop?

shahaly

So I have a couple of HD TVs and both of them have the VGA input. Now my question is, is it worth spending money on an "upconverting" dvd player that converts the normal dvds to HD and display them? My computer, when connected to the HDTV, displays in 720p resolution.

So the question is, does the computer do the same job as an upconverting dvd player, or should I invest into one.

Answer
It sounds like your HDTV's are 720P. You didn't say if your HDTV's have any HDMI ports.

I sometimes connect my laptop to the VGA port on my 720P HDTV and watch DVD's that way. My laptop senses the HDTV and will auto switch the resolution to 1280x720.

An upconverting DVD player, which I also have, will convert a 480i (or 480sd) output signal to 720i or 720p signal for output to your HDTV. You can see a difference in the quality of the picture.

I'm going to invest in either a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray dvd player later this year. If you decide to invest in a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray dvd player, check to see if it will also play standard DVD's (via upconverting circuitry). That way, you can still keep your standard dvd's.

Good luck and post your findings/decision here, ok?

My new laptop is doing this thing to any videos, like youtube or megavideo, that makes them all green, pixelly, and just plain hard to watch. It doesn't change any other movies I have, like on my hard drive or in the dvd player, just streaming videos. Any tips to fix it?

Answer
Kindly follow the steps and see if it solves your problem :
===============================================
1.Browser Issues :
Update your Browser - whether you are using Internet Explorer, Firefox,.Chrome or any browser just go to their website and download the latest versions.First uninstall the older version and then install the newest versions.
===============================================
2.Website Issues
Many of the popular video streaming websites, including YouTube, use Adobe Flash Player. Confirm that your computer is using the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. To do this, go to the Adobe website and download the appropriate uninstaller for your computer. Once the current installation has been uninstalled, go back to the Adobe website and install the most recent version of the plugin.
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
===============================================
3.Firewall Issues
Firewalls may block streaming video ports. If you are having problems watching streaming videos via a desktop application such as Windows Media Player, and you normally have to use an proxy server to gain Web access, you may have to enable your media player to also use the proxy server. This option can be found in the Options or Preferences menu of your particular media player.
===============================================
4.Internet Connection
The speed and stability of an Internet connection has a direct effect on the quality of streaming video. A slow connection will result in choppy video and audio, while an unstable Internet connection can result in video stopping suddenly. Try to view streaming video using only a fast connection such as broadband cable or DSL. If you are using a wireless broadband (Wi-Fi) connection, make sure you have a strong signal. Check your internet speed at - www.speedtest.net
========================================================================
5.Software Issues
Running out-of-date software can result in problems watching streaming video. Other common issues include buffering problems or acceleration problems. Consult your application's help file to learn how to update your media viewer to the latest version, and to learn how to adjust the buffer or video acceleration.
===============================================
6.Hardware Issues
The quality of your streaming video is dependent on the power of your graphics and sound cards. Older computers may not have robust enough video or sound cards to handle modern streaming video. If you have an older machine, try updating the drivers for your video and sound cards to ensure the best quality.
===============================================
7.Ad Blockers/Pop up blockers
Ad blockers, especially pop-up ad blockers, are public enemy number one. Turn them off and the videos may stream.
If you are using Chrome browser check if you have flash blocked extention installed.
===============================================
8.Antivirus Issues
Although less of a problem than ad blockers and firewalls, some overly protective anti-virus programs obstruct streaming video. If none of the earlier suggestions have worked for you, turn off your anti-virus programs and the videos might stream. This is perfectly safe.
========================================================================
9.TRY ALTERNATE PLAYER - Try alternate player to youtube - Flow Player (www.flowplayer.org)
it is very streamlined, fast and much better than the official youtube player. To watch Youtube through flow player click here to open up the youtube page and any video you click on will open with flow player - http://4.hidemyass.com/ip-1/encoded/Oi8vd3d3LnlvdXR1YmUuY29t&f=norefer.
===============================================
10.If Nothing works at all try downloading the Youtube videos to your computer from http://keepvid.com/ or download the software (which works with 900 video sites) from www.videoget.com.
===============================================
Hope this helps - Have a great day!

How come i cant play a video on my dvd player?

jess997

I have 4 glee episodes in MPEG4 format on my flashdrive and when i plug the flashdrive into the dvd player it doesent work. Does anyone know how to make it work or convert it to the windows media player format fast?

Answer
First of all you should read your DVD manual and I bet it will tell you it can only display .jpg pictures and perhaps standard def .AVI files. Thats it.

A DVD player is a standard def device. Why would they add software/circuits to it to let you play MP4 videos in HD? It is not a computer.

Look - your computer has 10-20 small pieces of software called "codex's". These software pieces plug in to handle .wmv, .mp3, .mp4, .rm, .mpg, .mkv, .avi, .flv, .. etc. About once per year you usually need to update these pieces of software.

But a DVD player is NOT a computer. It does not have a way to insert all these codex's or even let you upgrade things.

What you really need is a device called a "Media Server". It's a small box with a USB jack on one side and a HDMI jack on the other. Some of these run about $99, and other more expensive units have hard drives, network connections (to stream from your computer) and even wireless connections.

I have tried to burn things to DVD's before and it takes HOURS and sometimes there are issues with the sound being out of sync with the video, etc. A media server is a easier way to go.

I always used a DVD player to watch movies.

I have to buy a new DVD Player because my old one broke. Why should I want to buy a Blu-ray dvd player instead of a regular dvd player.

DVD players scan discs with red lasers and Blu-Ray players scan discs with blue lasers. I'm not joking about the laser part. That's how it really works!

Blu-Ray players have come down in price considerably, to the point where just about everybody can afford one. Why wouldn't the industry just push toward eliminating DVD players by only releasing new movies on Blu-Ray? I'm sure people who only have a DVD player would go out and buy at least a cheap high def player instead of refusing to rent or buy new releases. Is there simply too much money being made on the few DVD players that are left on the market despite their low price?

Answer
Where are all the DVD players gonna go? Someone has to buy them even if it is at a low price so it isnt a complete loss for the company...and people allways like good deals even if they dont need the stuff ...its all about thinking it through, give it a second thought.

What is the best HD DVD Player for a cheap price?

JackieC

I am looking for the best HD DVD Player (upconvert, HD, etc.) that I can buy for a low price. I know everyone says that you shouldn't go for a low price, but I want to. Does anyone know of a good HD DVD Player with component input/outputs? I doesn't need to have HDMI, but it has to upconvert or be at HD quality. I am looking for one under $150. Thanks!
Interesting, I never thought of the PS3. Does it have all of the same ports as an HD DVD player does? Does it have a remote so I don't have to use the controller?
Any other cheap HD DVD Players on the market?
It need not to be Blu-Ray.

Answer
PS3 plays Blu-Ray discs which are high definition DVD's but are not HD-DVD. The PS3 also costs $600 but it is the cheapest high definition recorded media player out there as Sony eats over $200 of the cost of the product from every sale. With that in mind, you are NOT going to find one for anywhere near $150 for a couple years. It's best to wait anyway until a dual compatibility player that plays both HD-DVD and BluRay comes out. In the mean time, you're going to have to stick with your progressive scan DVD player.

Another idea, why not subscribe to DirecTV HD or similar? I know DirecTV is offering their HD receiver for free at the moment. Instead of renting movies, you can order PPV and you can get them in HD quality. I know it's not the same but for your price bracket it would do until HD-DVD players come down in price.

elwood0525

I have downloaded movies from the internet and want to try to get around the incredibly long process of converting them to MP4 etc. I have heard that there are DVD players out there that will play AVI files. Is this true? And what brand makes them?

Answer
no, avi is media container, it can include more kinds of videos format and audios format, no DVD player can play all avi videos.
You can try RZ DVD Creator, it is a software, i have used it, it can create standard video DVD, it can directly convert and burn any videos to DVD(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-DL, DVD+DL, etc), such as avi to DVD, etc. Offer the better quality.

I am trying to burn DVDs for my car DVD player and AVI files are not working. What file types are more likely to work on a car DVD player?

Answer
As far as I know, DVD format is VOB. It contains two folders Video_TS and Audio_TS. If you want to know how to convert and burn video to DVD to play on DVD player, I think this step by step guide would help you

Both same thing, PS3 is cheaper. All you need to know.

---------------
360:
$100 - Wifi Adapter
$50 a year - Online Gaming
$30 - Charge controller
$20 - Intercooling fan
$100 - HD DVD
None - Internet Broswer

PS3:
Free - Built in Wifi

---------
360: Unfortunately, it has a 35%+ Failure rate, but it comes with a 3 year warranty.

PS3: Has about a 2-5% Failure rate. Comes with 1 year warranty.
---------

Halo 3 - Shooter
Halo ODST - Shooter
Halo Recon - Shooter [Not out yet]
Halo Wars - Strategy
Gears of War - Shooter
Left 4 Dead - Shooter
