Upconverting DVD players (or blu-ray players for that matter) are only worthwhile if you have a HDTV. They will do nothing to enhance your image on a regular TV.

Since blu-ray players will also upconvert DVDs on HDTVs, the only reason to buy just an upconverting DVD player instead of a blu-ray player is the fact that upconverting DVD players are under $50 whereas blu-ray players are about $150.

Can I buy a portable DVD player adapter separate?

Plain old DVD (the movie format - not the physical medium) is 480p. An upscaling DVD player using HDMI can stretch that to 1080p, but the picture quality won't be as good as a blu-ray disc, which is recorded in 1080p so no upscaling is required.

If your upscaling player supports other file formats, like Divx, they should definitely support 720p, but I don't know about 1080p. You'll have to check the manual for details on what formats and versions it supports specifically. In this case, the DVD is just a storage medium, so you could put 720p or 1080p video onto the DVD and have the player output it correctly - assuming it supports the file format you wrote the movie to DVD with. Again, check your manual.

1080i is interlaced, used on HDTV transmitting stations.
1080p is progressive, used in Blu-ray disks.
They do a very good job, but the end-result is not as good as those originally recorded at 1080i or 1080p.
By the way, you need HDMI on your TV, if you use Component it will not up-convert to 1080 i or p.

Yes, there are DVD cleaning kits, you can buy it at most electronics stores and it should cost $10 or less.

But a brand new player shouldn't need to be cleaned, so if it's having problems playing discs, then the best thing to do is return it and exchange it for another, not try to clean it (also the problem may have nothing to do with it needing cleaning anyway).

As far as how often you should clean a DVD player, in my experience the answer is NEVER - not until and unless it starts having glitches or dropouts while playing. Since cleaning physically rubs the lens (but the lens normally never touches anything), that's something you want to avoid doing until you have to do it.

Also before cleaning the player, check if maybe your DVD discs need to be cleaned instead - they're more likely to get dirty since they need to be handled. Cleaning a DVD is easy - just gently wipe with a damp cloth from the center to the outer edge and back (don't wipe in a circular motion).

I have a recorded DVD that was recorded from VHS on an older Sony DVD recorder a few years ago. Since then the original recorder has failed and we got rid of it. Now I can not get any DVD player or computer to read the disc, it says the disc is blank. Why is this? How would only the original recorder play the disc? What is the DVD player you are trying to use? I would say 80% only play DVD's of either DVD+/-R in a standard DVD format. Some play other file type formats, some play non-finalized disks, some play only DVD-R, some play DVDRW.

Put the disk in a computer. Go to My Computer and see what the drive says.
Should be 0 bytes free in UDF format
That shows it is a finalized disk.
Explore it with Internet Explorer, and it should have a Video_TS and Audio_TS file set.
Inside the Video_TS should be .VOB files, .IFO files, and .BUP files.
Make sure your folder options include showing all file types.

You can download VLC player as it plays almost anything, and to fix or finish the disk you may need to finalize it, you may need to re-burn it, you may need to format convert it. If you provide more information I can be more specific. I keep my Y/A email available.

Nope. There are no simple cords that will allow you to connect a composite-RCA source to a computer monitor blue VGA port.

Those VGA-to-composite-RCA cords are intended for video cards with a specially-built VGA port that can also send out a composite signal.

It will NOT work if you try to use it in reverse to connect a composite source like your DVD player to a VGA monitor. You will get no image.

Why not just play DVDs on your computer? Most likely your computer already has a DVD drive built-in.

Blu-Ray players have come down in price considerably, to the point where just about everybody can afford one. Why wouldn't the industry just push toward eliminating DVD players by only releasing new movies on Blu-Ray? Most manufacturer have stopped producing stand alone DVD players, due to the new blu ray disc player will also play the DVD. What you want to look for is quality and dependability of the brand. Pioneer and Panasonic are the top brand for quality and dependability. My first DVD player when it first came out was a Sony, model 7000 and 7700 which cost me over $1,100 but they did not last more than 3 years. My Pioneer Elite DVD player is now over 20 years old and still running strong. My Panasonic blu ray disc player the first generation model BD-10 which is 4 years old has had no problem playing over 300 movies. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Go online to home theater magazine and read the reviews on players. Panasonic has had a player each year being recommended as one of the best entry level. Hope this will help you out.

hd dvd are no longer used. it was a format war much like vhs and the other things. blue ray players use a blue ray (hence the name) to read disk. blue light has a higher frequency than red so it can read smaller areas of the disk. this means more data can be stored on the disk and therefore you can store videos which are 2 hours long and play at 50mb/s (hd).

I have to agree with the S.O.L. theory on this one. Your screen only holds a certain amount of pixels and/or inches as a better example. If your screen is 25" X 17" it can not be increased correct.......the resolution is proportional to it's size and technology within and no driver can give it the ability to hold more. The driver will work if you get a screen to match. The monitors come with the appropriate software and hardware to use any of the resolutions contained within it's limits so updating drivers to enhance most anything is slim as drivers are a tool to work within the limits set by the program/software/hardware or silverware lol Seldom if any to enhance something beyond it's manufacturers specifications. I just recently came across an item I never encountered before with a older monitor. It's frequency was not capable with my new systems outputs. I tried to adjust the frequency but it's settings did not allow for the older monitor to work within it's specifications. For this there might be a fix as the frequency is lower than that of my systems maximum and it would not exceed the limits of itself nor the monitors. I just need to find it to set it up. I'll just need to tell the wife NO 3 screens are not enough even if one is 60", one is 32" touch screen, and the third is a isolated TV screen used for surveillance cameras and security interfacing for my house. This leaves a hole in the middle of my desk that cry's for a screen that will compliment the other two ratio wise for aesthetics and it makes for a bitchin 3D adventure. More so if I extend the 60" to it's brackets limits of 24" out and 75 degree down tilt, then lay under it on the floor and watch a 3D fflick When everything is cohesive meaning the lighting and general atmosphere in the house you can relax and be taken in by the experience a truly cool experience to say the least. LOL I'm 50 yrs old and up to a few years ago I thought Star Wars was still the thing to put on when you want a video rush. Now that I see the advances in multimedia and Audio Video technology I upgraded everything with current running through it to today's technology and loving it. {I better for $12,000 {which includes a complete appliance upgrade as well Inc. side by side ref and a really cool Galaxy MP3 players. Allll this years {2012} Samsung lines from TV to Microwave and into mobile, fax/copy/scan/printer, and DVD. I have not heard any disagreements that Samsung's first line of products since their year shut down to retool and upgrade to clean room status has been anything else but superior over the rest. Other than the fact they lost sight of the customer in designing them. They wanted to out do I-crap, Microsoft, and similar brands {I don't mean that about there product just using "crap" as a definitive}. For example my Galaxy player has a 5" screen compared to I-Pods 4.5" great viewing but I have to order the screen savers and other items versus seeing a display every other end cap in best buy for I-Pod stuff. When going with a product it's best to go big and best that way you never look back.

I have a DVD/ VCR player that was connected to a smaller TV before the digital tv transition. I no longer use that TV and want to use the DVD/VCR player on another TV that is connected to a converter box. A simple answer would be appreciated.

There are 3 ways. First, the easiest:

Antenna to converter coaxial "in" jack. Converter coaxial "out" jack to the DVD/VCR player coaxial "in jack. Player coaxial "out" jack to the TV's antenna jack. Put the tuner in the player and also the TV on channel 3 and leave them there permanently. Use the remote for the converter to change channels.

Also good: Antenna to converter coaxial "in" jack. Converter coaxial "out" jack to the DVD/VCR player coaxial "in jack. Player composite "out" jacks (yellow-red-white) to the composite jacks on the back of the TV. Player permanently on channel 3 as above. Select the composite input on the TV with its own remote.

This works too if the player has composite input jacks (some do but not all): Antenna to converter coaxial "in" jack. Converter composite output jacks to the composite "in" jacks on the player. Composite "out" jacks on the player to the composite input on the TV. Select that input with the TV remote as above.

I have a RCA HD TV, SV 2000 digital dvd/vcr player,Apex digital home theater system, directv cable box, and a Liteon dvd recorder. I have not been able to connect them since I got them a year ago.I was told I had to buy a dvd recorder in order to record movies I watched on cable because the SV 2000 was just for playing.Can you tell me,(the absolutely not technically inclined person) in simple terms how to connect these componants? scart sockets are simple and less complicated.buy a 4 plug scart box cost about £9.99 plug DVD VCR into 1 scart socket plug home theater into 2 socket any cable or free view into 3rd socket the scart box has its own scart so plug this into the aux scart port on the back of DVD recorder.all of your appliances can know be recorded onto DVD.last thing run a scart lead from DVD recorder to TV and run a white and red phono cable from the red and white socket of TV to your home theater so that anything that is on TV will have sound on theater system.

I know that they are meant only for cars and all, and that it has a cigarette lighter adapter thing to make it turn on. But does anyone know a way to transform it into a player to work on AC current thru an outlet. Maybe cutting a cell phone charger in half and arve out the wires and wrap it around the wires in the dvd players car adapter ? Or anything like that ?

You need to get an AC to DV transformer that provides 12 to 14 volts with enough milliamps to power the DVD player. A cell phone charger isn't going to cut it. You could also get a battery pack. They make rechargeable battery packs with cigarette lighter outlets.

I am looking for either a mountable or headrest-inserted DVD player for my car. I would prefer if each screen could play separate movies, but that is not a contingency. The main thing is that I would like to be able to control the player from the front seat without having to turn around and push any buttons (stopping to change DVD is ok). Cost is a factor, but quality and features are a must. Thanks.

I have to buy a new DVD Player because my old one broke. Why should I want to buy a Blu-ray dvd player instead of a regular dvd player.

For one thing any disc you buy in the future will be a blu-ray disc and will not work in a regular dvd player. What you should buy is a player that states on the box that it will work with all existing disc formats. They will come out with something else that makes all that garbage in a couple of years anyway.

Some of the BluRay players are 'smart' and will play a few file formats from a USB drive.

But most televisions and BluRay players will NOT work with a USB hard drive.

If you want to do this - get a media server. Look at the Western Digital TV Live box. This thing WILL work with USB hard drives, gives you 20+ apps for YouTube, Netflix, HuluPlus, Pandora, etc. It will also work wirelessly from your PC. The WD box plays most file formats include .MP3's.

A cheaper version is the Roku2 units for about $60, but it does not play as many file formats.

I have downloaded lots of moves in dvdrip that is .avi format, now I want to write them onto a dvd in such a format it becomes playable in standalone dvd players. Please suggest such softwares, free ones are more appreciable. If it is possible with common softwares such as Nero, please explain the procedure. Thanks in advance.

How do i get my onn dvd player on my universal remote?

So my dvd player remote broke and I tried to put my dvd player to my universal remote but onn is not on the list its a cogeco remote for my cable and my other dvd player is hooked up to my other remote (its a magnivox) but for some reason onn is not on the list, is onn owned by a company that's on the list? The dvd player is a cheap one so I figure it might be with another company.
