What's the differences between Blu-Ray & HD DVD Player?

VIctor

Can a regular Blu-Ray play a HD DVD?

Answer
HD-DVD was a competing format to Blu-Ray. Both are HD formats. Several months ago, HD-DVD was dropped by all its coalition manufacturers. A couple companies made players that could play both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, but those models have been discontinued due to the demise of the HD-DVD format. Unless your player specifically lists HD-DVD as a format that it supports, your Blu-Ray player will not play HD-DVDs.

Should I get an Blu Ray Player or a DVD UpConverter?

Rayford

I have an Xbox 360 running HDMI on a 32" 720p tv. Will a DVD Up-converter do a better job? Or should i just wait to get a Blu Ray Player? Or, on my tv, is it even worth it to get a blu ray payer?

Answer
On a 32" 720p HDTV the improvement of Blu-ray over DVD will be small. And if you are watching DVDs on a Blu-ray player it may or may not be better than a DVD on an upscaling DVD player ... it depends on the quality of the video processor chip. Many upscaling DVD players don't do a great job, but more expensive ones (say > $60) aren't bad. On the other hand cheaper Blu-ray players (say < $150) generally don't do a great job upscaling DVDs either.

So really your choice is a "better" upscaling DVD player or a "better" Blu-ray player. Since you won't get much benefit from Blu-ray disks on your current HDTV unless you plan to upgrade it in the next year or so I'd opt for a "better" upscaling DVD player. The best choice is a used OPPO player. They are now discontinued, but the DV981 (See link) was generally considered one of the best upscaling DVD players ever made, so try to find one of those used.

FYI, I watch DVDs on a Blu-ray player that does better than average DVD upscaling and display via a 1080p projector on a 110" screen. While Blu-ray disks are a bit better, in most cases DVD looks pretty darn good. So, even though I can play Blu-rays I more often than not still buy DVDs because they are usually much cheaper ... and few movies really warrant Blu-ray.

Hope that helps ... Good luck.

has anyone tried this, blu ray plays in my DVD player?

peru_jhona

I have a home theater, Philips FDR 1600 and well, just for the heck of it I tried playin a blu ray movie and well it played... has anyone else tried this or want to try and comment. and yes I'm sure that the movie is a blu ray and that the player is a DVD player... please comment

Answer
Some blu-ray packages also include a separate DVD version in them. Otherwise, no DVD player will a blu-ray, so either you actually used the DVD version, OR you actually have a blu-ray player.

can u play blu ray disc on normal dvd players?

gin

or do u have to have a special dvd player

Answer
You need a Blu-Ray player.

The Blu-Ray disc is a new kind of disc. It's certainly the same shape as a DVD, but the pits (the tiny bits that encode the data) are much smaller. A normal DVD player uses a red laser to read the DVD disc (and usually includes an infrared laser as well to read CDs), but the Blu-Ray players incorporate a blue/violet laser. Since this laser has a smaller wavelength, it can read the smaller pits on the Blu-Ray disc. That's how they get 50GB on a Blu-Ray disc, whereas a DVD would normally store about 9GB on the same 2-layer disc.

In additional, all of the software on a Blu-Ray player is different. The menus and all are written in a version the Java programming language. The audio and video formats are higher defintion, and can include not only MPEG-2 video, but VC-1 (formerly known as Windows Media 9) or AVC (Advanced Video Coding, part of the MPEG-4 specification).
So even if you made a Blu-Ray disc using the plain old DVD media, DVD players wouldn't understand it.

However, Blu-Ray players do play DVDs.

What is the difference between a dvd player and a blu-ray dvd player?

I always used a DVD player to watch movies.

I have to buy a new DVD Player because my old one broke. Why should I want to buy a Blu-ray dvd player instead of a regular dvd player.

Answer
For one thing any disc you buy in the future will be a blu-ray disc and will not work in a regular dvd player. What you should buy is a player that states on the box that it will work with all existing disc formats. They will come out with something else that makes all that garbage in a couple of years anyway.

Is there a blu-ray dvd player i can attach a external hard drive to?

justin

I'm looking for a blu-ray DVD player that I can attach a external hard drive to. I want to be able to download movies from my computer to the external hard drive an be able to watch it on my HD 1080p TV. Not just movies I want to be able to listen to music as well.

Answer
Some of the BluRay players are 'smart' and will play a few file formats from a USB drive.

But most televisions and BluRay players will NOT work with a USB hard drive.

If you want to do this - get a media server. Look at the Western Digital TV Live box. This thing WILL work with USB hard drives, gives you 20+ apps for YouTube, Netflix, HuluPlus, Pandora, etc. It will also work wirelessly from your PC. The WD box plays most file formats include .MP3's.

A cheaper version is the Roku2 units for about $60, but it does not play as many file formats.

Hope this helps.

DVD players scan discs with red lasers and Blu-Ray players scan discs with blue lasers. I'm not joking about the laser part. That's how it really works!

What are the best home theater system for a 1080p HDTV and blu-ray DVD player?

T J

I recently purchased a HDTV with 1080p and a blu-ray DVD player (PS3), and wonder what are home theater systems that would provide better outcomes at a reasonable cost (<$500). Do I need to buy a system or a receiver and separate speakers with capacity of 7.1 channel and HDMI 1.3 output?. Any recommendations on particular brand name and model?

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

Answer
The above answer will give you amazing sound, but that solution takes a lot of time and money. If you want a "quick fix" that yields entirely decent results, consider the Onkyo lineup of HT systems. It won't match up to the piece-by-piece assembly outlined by Robert P, but it will be a once-and-done expenditure that delivers admirable results. As long as you get a receiver with analog 5.1 or 7.1 inputs, HDMI 1.3 will not be as important. Especially if you do not buy a high-end system like the one described above, you would not really reap the benefits of having a 1.3 receiver.
