Portable DVD player that streams Netflix?

revert-to-

I am looking into buying a great portable DVD player that will let me stream movies from Netflix. I have looked into the Samsung BD-C8000. It seems good, but a bit expensive. Is there any other less expensive brand or model I could buy? What do you think about the Samsung model and other ones?

Answer
You're not going to find Netflix on a portable DVD player. The Samsung Blu-Ray player you mentioned is an excellent choice.

Do you need an HDMI cable to connect a DVD player to an LCD TV?

Sam Darren

I'm getting ready to buy a 37" LCD HDTV. But I just thought about my combo DVD/VCR player that I have at home. It's just a DVD/VCR player, not an HD-DVD player. Can I just connect it to the LCD TV with the normal cables and watch it. Or would I need a special cable such as a HDMI cable? I'm thinking that since the DVD player is digital, I should just be able to hook the darn thing up to the new LCD-HDTV.

Answer
Just make sure it has the input type that matches the output from your DVD player - component is usually the best option if your player outputs it.
You only need the HDMI cable for HD level of input to the tv, such as from an HD cable/satellite box or an HDDVD/BluRay dvd player or a DVD player that upconverts to HD.

Connecting lcd tv, dvd player and a 5.1 Videologic surround system?

karlos k

Hi AM,
The tv model make and model: Philips 32PF7531D. I'm sure there's a way but I'm quite confused. You may be able to help.

Answer
The DVD player will connect to the TV (video) with a component cable (3 RCA cables colored red, green and blue). For audio, though, you have computer speakers, so they may be tough to hook up to your DVD player. Does your player have 5.1 analog out (do you see 6 RCA outputs with L, R, C, RL, RR, Sub) marked? If so, connect those directly to your Videologic. If not, you'll need to get an amplifier which has 5.1 pre-outs.

My PC DVD player doesn't work...?

TyphoonZX

I have Windows Media player 10, but I cna't play DVDs in my computer...(I think it may have been connected to when I uninstalled Interactual DVD player) If it is, where can I get it again?

Answer
Many times, the DVD software is licensed with the hardware.
If the software is still installed but you removed the DVD player, and installed a different player, the software may not work.
If this is the case, reinstall the older DVD drive along with the newer DVD. If the software detects the old drive hardware in the system, the software should work.
You will have to set the master/slave jumpers properly to get two drives to work on the same cable. One must be set to master, and be at the end of the bus, the other must be set to slave.
If only one drive is in the system, set the jumper to CS cable select. If you get it wrong, the computer may not boot, but will not result in damage.

PC HD vs HD upscaling DVD player?

Nyx

Hiya,

I have a 8800GTS graphics card (HD) connected to my HD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable. I also have a HD upscaling DVD player connected using HDMI. Would there be any difference in the playback quality of the DVD? Do I still need the DVD player?

Sound quality is better though the PC.

Answer
It depends. Which one gives the better output picture. Older models of upscaling DVD player tend to give poorer upscaling results than newer models, but this is not always the case. In your eyes, which gives the better picture? Remember that you can upgrade the computers decoding software to get a better picture.

As the PC sound quality is better, unless the output picture is noticeably poorer, I would use the PC for upscaled DVD output, unless you have a need to quickly load and play a DVD (For instance if the PC takes a while to boot up).

What is the benefit of having a wifi blueray dvd player?

Wayne

As I begin the process of buying a Blueray player, I'm confused over those that have wifi. I guess I don't know why a player needs an internet connection. Could someone fill me in on this?

Answer
1. the biggest reason why it would need an internet connection is if you bought it in hopes of streaming netflix/youtube/pandora radio etc. most people want a wireless connection because they do not want to deal with wires and running them etc, i would still recommend going wired especially if you are watching hd video since a wireless connection usually wont have the speeds necessary for hd video.

2. you can download apps to your smartphone ipod touch etc, so that you can use them as a remote, or to pass files from one source to another, example would be, if you wanted to look at the pictures in your phone on your tv you can do that through your bluray player.

3. this was the original reason why bluray players wanted/needed an internet connection, firmware updates, with bluray discs the way they are manufactured changes, they constantly improve the way its done to give you better performance, and with that you need to update the firmware so that it can continue to read all the new bluray movies out there. it just makes it easier being able to download the firmware directly to the machine vs having to download it to your pc and then burning it to a disc etc.

wifi isnt that necessary. but if you ever plan on going wifi then i would advise buying it with it built in versus buying the adaptor which costs more than the 2 combined. and usually 30-40 more. plus most retail stores have deals from the manufacture that will give away a free adaptor.

Dvd blue ray players w/ wifi?...?

Betty

Today i decided i want to buy a DVD blue ray player, but haven't a clue about them except that it gives a great picture. When i went online about them they were listed w/ wifi. WHAT IS THE WIFI FOR PLEASE? And Is a DVD & a blue ray the same thing? In other words, can i play DVD movies on just a blue ray? Excuse my ignorance but i have no one else to ask. Thank youâ¡

Answer
Leave the DVD part off. You are just looking for a Blu-Ray player, All will play DVDs and audio CDs in addition to the Blu-Ray discs. Many play content from USB.

As for WiF/networking, that is at least to use BD-Live, and at most to access online content services such as Netflix and Youtube.

You need to watch though, because many Blu-Ray players have dropped all analog A/V out. The one I bought a while back is all digital, HDMI for the TV, coaxial for sound (which works for me, as I have a modern HDTV and digital surround receiver).

HEADREST DVD PLAYER for my car???

NDN

So, I need to get two 7'' DVD players inserted into the back of two headrests. I've only been able to find monitors meaning they don't have the DVD players with them. My question is... Where can I get them???

Serious answers only please.

Thanks in advance.
DEFINATELY, not a mom yet. Just want to trick out my car.

Answer
well is this just vanity or are you a mother of kids going out on a family vacation?

b/c if its just vanity to make your car look good or if its just for friends than the answer is its a waste of money...you might as well buy a portable dvd player and buy a strap or harness to attach it in between the two seats...dont forget to buy a converter adaptor as it might run out of battery.

you can check autoshops such as Pepboys , ACE, or Autozone....but if they dont have them in these places you can GOOGLE it and find related sites that may sell them...or better yet check any local audio/digital car shops that would be inclined to sell audio appliances and/or automobile entertainment devices.

Buying a portable dvd player?

poodle

I want to buy one as a present for my husband for when he flys on business (which is often) but I don't want to spend loads on it at all. What is a good deal and what do I need to look for in a portable dvd player? What features should it have and what size should it be etc.

Answer
When shopping for a portable DVD player, keep in mind how you will be using the device. For example, if you plan to use a portable solely in the car to keep the kids occupied on long road trips, then the screen size and the inclusion of an AC adapter, which will allow you to power the player via your vehicle's power outlet, are more important than the unit's weight or the life expectancy of the battery. Conversely, if you are buying a portable DVD player to take with you on long flights, look for a lightweight model with plenty of battery life. If you usually travel with a spouse or colleague, or if you have two kids, opt for a model with dual headphone jacks and a larger screen size so two people can comfortably enjoy a movie while sitting next to each other.

Would a DVD bought in Canada work in my player?

mtgcnv67

I saw a show I really liked on SoapNet a few years back called Being Erica, but we stopped getting the network on our cable last year. I've looked it up and it's still going, and I'd like to buy the DVDs to keep up with the show since we don't have the network anymore, but it isn't sold here in the U.S.

Wikipedia says it's been released in Canada, and labels Canada as region 1 (which is ours too...right?). But I'm still a little hesitant on paying the money for it only to find out it doesn't work.

I bought a music CD at a Canadian airport back in 2000, and it worked; will the DVDs work too? (Ah...if only we had a multi-regional DVD player!)

Answer
Yes Canadian and USA dvds are the same. No problemo.

Is the Mac Mini good?

Dominic

i am starting to learn how to dj and i need a computer but my budget is $500. i know the mac mini is a desktop and there are better desktops but people say that apple is good with dj software should i get a mac mini and what model (2010,2011,2012). Need answers by tomorrow

Answer
I like the mini mac I guess, but I haven't messed much with it. My house is mainly a PC household. My dad hooked up the mini mac to our tv and it sits on the stand shelf with everything else (bluray player, vcr - yes still have one and love it, dvd player, cable box, etc..) Dad bought it once to try it out, cause he's all techy and what not.. hooked it up to the tv and used it a few times and it sits there still hooked up and collects dust.

You want to get the acer aspire one mini-notebook, it's the best and top rated mini-notebook and less than $500. But you will need to be an external USB disk drive if you want to install things or to copy files to a CD. Or you can just use a usb memory drive.

DVD/VHS player?

jerryreed1

i want a DVD/VHS player that will record my old VSH to DVD?
is there suck thing?

if so can you guys tell me some sites that sell them?

thanks

Answer
Hi jerryreed13,

You can buy a combination VHS/DVD recorder everywhere. WalMart carries several kinds. The simplest and best way is to simply get a DVD recorder. You can find them everywhere for less then $100. You will feed the output of your VHS player into the input of your DVD recorder to copy tapes.

If you are wanting to copy pre recorded tapes you will need to bypass the copy guard. It is legal as long as you are backing up your own tapes.

Then you will need a device like "Sima T120 GoDVD". It removes the copy guard and enhances the picture. You plug your source into it and plug it into the input of your recorder.

Here is an example of one - http://www.heartlandamerica.com/browse/item.asp?PIN=54817&

Another one that will work is the Digital Video Stabilizer. They work like a charm. Go here to read about and see an example - http://www.qualitekindustries.com/vidstab.html

RW Compatible DVD Players?

Xander

My mom found some old VHS tapes of some family reunions and get-togethers. She asked me if I could transfer them to DVD.

I have a DVD burner that can play and burn on DVD -RWs, DVD +RWs, DVD -Rs, and DVD +Rs.

I went to get the tapes from her and looked at her DVD player and all it said was "RW Compatible."

Does this mean that is can only play DVD RWs? And if if can, does that mean it can play +RWs and -RWs?

Or does it mean it can play DVD -Rs, DVD -RWs, DVD +Rs, and DVD +RWs?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Xander,

The RX compatible simply tells you it can use a RW DVD. Many units will not play RW DVD's.

Her machine probably supports either +R or -R media but your safest bet is to probably use DVD-R media. That being the oldest format it will play in just about any player ever made.

To be safe I would take a DVD you burned and play it in her machine.

when was the dvd player invented?

Answer
In the early 1990s two high-density optical storage standards were being developed: one was the MultiMedia Compact Disc (MMCD), backed by Philips and Sony, and the other was the Super Density disc (SD), supported by Toshiba, Time-Warner, Matsushita Electric, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Pioneer, Thomson, and JVC. IBM's president, Lou Gerstner, acting as a matchmaker, led an effort to unite the two camps behind a single standard, anticipating a repeat of the costly format war between VHS and Betamax in the 1980s.

Philips and Sony abandoned their MMCD format (not to be confused with MultiMediaCards) and agreed upon Toshiba's SD format (not to be confused with secure digital cards) with two modifications that are both related to the servo tracking technology. The first one was the adoption of a pit geometry that allows "push-pull" tracking, a proprietary Philips/Sony technology. The second modification was the adoption of Philips' EFMPlus. EFMPlus, created by Kees Immink, who also designed EFM, is 6% less efficient than Toshiba's SD code, which resulted in a capacity of 4.7 GB as opposed to SD's original 5 GB. The great advantage of EFMPlus is its great resilience against disc damage such as scratches and fingerprints. The result was the DVD specification Version 1.5, announced in 1995 and finalized in September 1996. In May 1997, the DVD Consortium was replaced by the DVD Forum, which is open to all companies.

"DVD" was originally an initialism for "Digital Versatile Disc." Many non industry consumers believe that it stands for "Digital Video Disc" however the format was not specifically for video but rather computer data. At the time there were few commercial computer application that would require the size of a DVD, however there was one for video; because video popularized he DVD format consumers mistakenly refer to it as Digital Video Disc.

Warner Home Video and Toshiba introduced the new format to Wall Street types, Hollywood bigwigs and the investment community at an elaborate staged event on the Warner Bros. lot, hosted by Warner Home Video then President Warren Lieberfarb. The production included the first ever interactive DVD menu designed by producer Billy Pollina. The first DVD players and discs were available in November 1996 in Japan, March 1997 in the United States, 1998 in Europe and in 1999 in Australia. The first pressed DVD release was the film Twister in 1996. The film had the first test for 2.1 surround sound. The first titles released in the U.S., on March 19, 1997, by Lumivision, authored by AIX Entertainment, were IMAX adaptations: Africa: The Serengeti, Antarctica: An Adventure of a Different Nature, Tropical Rainforest, and Animation Greats.

By the early part of 1999 the price of a DVD player had dropped below $300 US. At that point Wal-Mart began to offer DVD players for sale, but DVDs represented only a small part of their video inventory; VHS tapes of films made up the remainder. Wal-Mart's competitors followed suit, and DVDs began to increase in popularity with American consumers.

DVD rentals first topped those of VHS during the week of June 15, 2003 (27.7 M rentals DVD vs. 27.3 M rentals VHS). Major U.S. retailers Circuit City and Best Buy stopped selling pre-recorded VHS tapes in 2002 and 2003, respectively. In June 2005, Wal-Mart and several other retailers announced plans to phase out the VHS format entirely, in favor of the more popular DVD format, however as of late 2006 Wal-Mart still has a very small stock of VHS Movie titles. Blank VHS tapes are still widely available since DVD video recorders are significantly less common than VHS recorders. Many films released to theaters from 2004 onwards are released solely to DVD format and not to VHS format.

While the growth of theatrical films on DVD has cooled recently, that of television programs and music video has increased dramatically. The price of a DVD player has dropped to below the level of a typical VCR (although DVD recorders are still usually more expensive than VCRs); a low-end player with reasonable quality can be purchased for under $35 US in many retail stores and many modern computers are sold with DVD-ROM drives. Also popular are units that have integrated a DVD and VHS VCR into a single device; these can be purchased for under $100 US. Most, but not all, movie "sets" or series have been released in boxed sets, as have some entire seasons or selected episode volumes of older and newer television programs.

Yup, the PS3's Blue Ray player is a really nice one. Right now, you cant get an HD-DVD player or Blue ray player under $500. So waiting a little bit could be worth a lot it you wait and buy the PS3. When you get it though, Make sure you buy the upgraded cable (HDMI) or it wont be worth it. Good Luck.

Are portable DVD players worth the money?

gcash81

For anybody who owns one are they worth the money? work good? look good? sound good? are you happy with it? etc...thanks

Answer
Before wanting to have a DVD portable if you plan to buy. Ask your self what is your main purpose of having a portable DVD. Well if your a traveler i would say that buying and owning a portable DVD is really worth the money because it would be very usefull on your part. Portable DVD is very convinient and depend on the brand you want if your looking for the quality of sound and the looks as well. If your purpose is just owning one because your freind got one too, well Portable DVD is not worth the money for you.

Answer
OH my god! over 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just kidding I would say about $3200

please pick me :)

just need some honest opinions about a situation with this dude?

ShaynaMari

I'm soo sorry that this is gonna be long, please forgive me :3

Alright, i'll try to explain this the best that i can.
Going back to 5th grade -->
Me and this dude (Brian) were best friends all our life. I mean, he was totally like my brother. His uncle and my dad were best friends growing up, so we were with each other a lot and he just lives like a mile down my road so he rode my bus. While we were on there we would always eat cookies and watch movies on his portable dvd player. At about the middle of the year some of the younger kids accused us of dating (ya know, the kid stuff. Oh and i forgot to mention that he's a year older than me so he was in 6th grade) so then he quit sitting with me and really even talking to me. That was the last time i hung out with him.

8th grade for me 9th for him--
Now we go to the same high school (yes my high school has 8th grade) and i see him a lot. He's a big athlete and is in love with football. The only sport i like is football, so of course i joined the powder-puff team. See, powder puff practice was right after the guys' practice, and he was always there afterward cause his uncle was the coach of the team. Here's the first weird thing that happened, while we were practicing some of the guys would stay after their practice to help us out. We were practicing areas and he chose to be in my area. (his gf plays so shouldn't he have went in her area on the other side of the field?) I just found that to be a little weird. -----
And now, just a while back ago i was going up to class and had a bunch of books in my hands. He was going to the same floor i was so he held the door open for me. I said thanks (naturally) then he said my name all weird so i said yes cause it sounded like he was wanting to talk with me. I figured he was going to ask something about his gf (cause she has a lot of classes with me) but instead he asked me why i never talk to him anymore. he told me to walk to his house sometime and that we should start talking more. So here's my questions---
-Why would he just stop talking to me for 2 years then start talking again? Do you think he was embarrassed of me? (cause see, i used to dress like a dude. I was a total tomboy and had no girl in my what so ever. Now i still have my tomboy mind but i'm a scene kid and dress so much better.) That's sorta what i think. I've asked friends what they think it is but never get a straight answer.
-And it's not that i don't want him to be my best friend anymore, cause i really do. During those 2 years i missed him like crap actually, but now i feel all awkward talking to him. So, if he wants to talk more should i go up, or should i wait for him tot alk to me again? He's with his gf most of the time during the morning but we still ride the bus together. And i feel kinda weird going up to him randomly cause i'm afraid he's still embarrassed of me. I mean, especially around his friends. They're all jocks and muscular and now Brian's bff's with a 8th grade scene girl, if you were a guy would you be embarrassed?
I'm really sorry, but i just need some opinions on this. It's sorta been weighing on my mind so i thought i should just ask for the heck of it. Ya know, just to get a stranger's opinion. Thanks for everyone's answers! Please don't be mean though! >.< xoxo
See, that's another thing i found weird. One day i wanted to just change it up a bit and i wore a graphic off-the-shoulder top with ripped AE jeans and Ed Hardy converse and that was the day he confronted me in the hall. Weird? And yeah by scene i mean something like this http://www.newhairstyles2010.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/6e23f_pictrues+of+emo+girls+2.jpg

kind of style

Answer
try talk to him when hes alone, maybe he wants to be friends again. you should test the situation, come into school wearing something girly, or whatever is popular these days, and see if he's any different. i'm sure it's not about the clothes. i was friends with this guy and when everyone said we were dating, i stopped being friends with him coz i didn't want to give him or other people the wrong impression. and then i missed him, and couldn't help talking to him again. so yah no. but test out the clothes thing. when you say scene, you mean gothic? or rocker? yeah, just wear anything along the lines of:
http://www.pseriesstylist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/vs1.jpg
or just something girly, spice it up a bit :D

but go for it, and try being friends with him again if you want
seems like a nice guy, but don't read too much into things. we all want to view things in our favor but not as how they actually appear, i've been there before

How do you hook up a dvd player/VCR combo?

emmie f

I just bought a DVD player/VCR combo. I already have a cable box (with DVR). How can I hook up the new DVD/VCR so that I can record cable shows onto the VCR?

Answer
On the back of the DVR there should be a set of "outputs" red white and yellow. You can run the outputs into the AV input on the DVD/VCR combo player. Then all you will have to do is put the VCR on the AV channel and play what you have DVR'd and hit record.

how do u transfer vcr tapes on to dvd player with a dvd recorder/or vcrdvd combo?

stumesa

i have a dvd recorder that i can transfer vcr tapes to my dvd player, how do i do that?

Answer
All you have to do is VCR outputs (composite/Yellow and audio/red & white jacks) to the corresponding inputs on the recorder. Hit play,VHS...hit record, dvd recorder and you're done. Stop the DVD recorder and put in new blank dics. Repeat as necessary.

Many dvd recorders allow you to make a basic main menu if you want to break up the dvd into accessible parts. Also be aware that you can get more onto a DVD by varying the record mode on your recorder. But, more on a disc means lower quality. You should also make sure you buy the right blank discs for your brand of recorder. Most handle DVD-Rs but a few brands use DVD+Rs. Check your manual. The patch cables for dubbing can be purchased at your local Radio Shack...you'll need "RCA to RCA".

hope that helps!!!

Can you convert any file size to a DVD?

Gabriel

I have a big file size on a video and I just want to make sure if I can upload it and burn it right.

Answer
No. That would be like Yao Ming putting on my shoes.
A DVD holds 4.6GB. You have a "big" file. Of course, I know exactly what size that is.... NOT.

Check the size of the file.

Although you can use various video converters to change the file type, and thus reduce the file size, that will cause a noticeable loss of image quality, so a better option would be to split the file into two or more parts and put the parts on different DVDs.

To make a "data DVD" (only works in a computer, and only plays using movie player software, such as QuicvkTime Player), drag the file to the DVD icon, right-click the DVD icon, and choose "Burn".

To make a DVD movie disc (plays in DVD playing software or in a set-top DVD player through your TV), here are the best options:

-- For Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate, use Windows DVD Maker, link below.

-- For pre-2011 model Macs, it came with iDVD (which happens to be discontinued now). Use it. iMovie is the app that came with your Mac for editing movies. Then it has an option to Export to iDVD, which has a Help menu, and if that doesn't answer all your questions, use support.apple.com for "iDVD menus" or whatever your question is about.

-- For newer Macs, use DVDStyler. It is a free (not a demo / trial) open-source alternative to iDVD for Intel Macs. It has most of the same options as iDVD, but not as many cool themes.

Does Multi Format DVD players mean that they play any region DVD?

Rachel

Answer
No, multi-formt means they can play multiple formats of DVDs, such as DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and many can even play multiple types of standard CDs such as CD-R, CD-RW, etc. The player would have to say multi-region or region 0 to play any region DVD.

Help! What is a multi-region dvd player?!?

MandyLee

Okay, so for Christmas I am asking for a Korean movie called "Attack on the Pin-up Boys" starring the Korean boy band, Super Junior.
I'm looking on Ebay to find the best deal and package and stuff but then I see it says things like,
"multi-region dvd player required!"
I don't really understand what that means.
I live in the USA, is there a special kind of dvd player that I need to get for it to work? How do I know it's a multi-region dvd player?
I would appreciate help very much! I don't want to buy the dvd and find out that it won't work on my dvd player.
thanks!
Also -- how do I know if it's a region 1 dvd or multi-region?
will it say it on the box of the dvd player or directly on it?
is it going to say it plain out like, "Region 1 dvd player"
or is it weird coding?

Answer
i have that movie i suggest buying it from yesasia.com since its asia central for k-pop and others and it you want to buy other suju stuff since over $40 is free shipping and over $50 you get a $5 coupon.

you can watch it on your computer if you can't find a multi region dvd player.

north america dvd players are region 1.

since that movie is korean, it's region 3.

japan uses region 2.

on your computer though, you can only change the regions 5 times and the fifth time, whatever region it is, it gets stuck in that region.

you have to get a dvd that can play any region.

if you want to buy a new dvd for the movie, just look up all region dvd player and buy one.

otherwise you can watch it on your computer if you plan on only watching korean dvds on your computer.

Should I get an Blu Ray Player or a DVD UpConverter?

Rayford

I have an Xbox 360 running HDMI on a 32" 720p tv. Will a DVD Up-converter do a better job? Or should i just wait to get a Blu Ray Player? Or, on my tv, is it even worth it to get a blu ray payer?

Answer
On a 32" 720p HDTV the improvement of Blu-ray over DVD will be small. And if you are watching DVDs on a Blu-ray player it may or may not be better than a DVD on an upscaling DVD player ... it depends on the quality of the video processor chip. Many upscaling DVD players don't do a great job, but more expensive ones (say > $60) aren't bad. On the other hand cheaper Blu-ray players (say < $150) generally don't do a great job upscaling DVDs either.

So really your choice is a "better" upscaling DVD player or a "better" Blu-ray player. Since you won't get much benefit from Blu-ray disks on your current HDTV unless you plan to upgrade it in the next year or so I'd opt for a "better" upscaling DVD player. The best choice is a used OPPO player. They are now discontinued, but the DV981 (See link) was generally considered one of the best upscaling DVD players ever made, so try to find one of those used.

FYI, I watch DVDs on a Blu-ray player that does better than average DVD upscaling and display via a 1080p projector on a 110" screen. While Blu-ray disks are a bit better, in most cases DVD looks pretty darn good. So, even though I can play Blu-rays I more often than not still buy DVDs because they are usually much cheaper ... and few movies really warrant Blu-ray.

Hope that helps ... Good luck.

can u play blu ray disc on normal dvd players?

gin

or do u have to have a special dvd player

Answer
You need a Blu-Ray player.

The Blu-Ray disc is a new kind of disc. It's certainly the same shape as a DVD, but the pits (the tiny bits that encode the data) are much smaller. A normal DVD player uses a red laser to read the DVD disc (and usually includes an infrared laser as well to read CDs), but the Blu-Ray players incorporate a blue/violet laser. Since this laser has a smaller wavelength, it can read the smaller pits on the Blu-Ray disc. That's how they get 50GB on a Blu-Ray disc, whereas a DVD would normally store about 9GB on the same 2-layer disc.

In additional, all of the software on a Blu-Ray player is different. The menus and all are written in a version the Java programming language. The audio and video formats are higher defintion, and can include not only MPEG-2 video, but VC-1 (formerly known as Windows Media 9) or AVC (Advanced Video Coding, part of the MPEG-4 specification).
So even if you made a Blu-Ray disc using the plain old DVD media, DVD players wouldn't understand it.

However, Blu-Ray players do play DVDs.

The second link is apparently is the 'next years release' version of the previous one. The first one is well reviewed where as the second doesnt have as many but being the new version of the first one it should be as good/better? Just wondering whether its worth paying the extra £13 on top of the wireless adapter.
@Hunny : It's not the fact of money, its pointless me paying the extra £13 if theres no difference between the two models!

Answer
I would not purchase a Sony product. I never had a Sony product that have lasted me more than 3 years. When DVD first came out I purchase a Sony DVD player model 7000 and the following year the 7700 both cost me over $1,100 each. The first HDTV in the market by Sony, a 34" CRT HDTV for a price of $6,400. If you read yahoo questions you will find many Sony items with issue. My first Blu Ray disc player is by Panasonic, model BD-10. It is over 4 years old and played over 300 Blu Ray disc movies without one issue. When AVATAR came out many player had an issue playing the movie including Sony. My Panasonic had no issue at all. Hope this will help you out.

An X-File question about an X-File I'm currently working on?

Special Ag

Obviously to recount my steps from seclusion to being allowed back into F.B.I. headquarters without so much as a bat of an eyelid I wanna get my hands on X-Files 2 next week.

I, being a wiley and investigative fellow through this beard thats grown back is now wondering which edition to get....

The American version which boasts 3 DVDs:

X-File #933380/111/11198832

http://www.amazon.com/X-Files-Believe-Three-Disc-Special-Digital/dp/B001G7PSN0

Orrrrrrrrrr, the U.K. version which allegedly only has EEEEK SHOCK HORROR two discs.

X-File #9333802/1112/119 - if you look carefully this question contains a subliminal message - 88322

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Files-Believe-Special-including-Digital/dp/B001G7PHDQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1227062274&sr=1-2

Oh, the humility.

So.... Would it be fair to say that the U.S. version sounds, oh, so much more meaty.

*Crackle* CHEESE IS ILLEGAL - MICE WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD - VOTE STEWIE GRIFFIN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2012 AS THATS WHEN THE WORLD WILL END.

Am thinking of buying the DVD next Monday eeek the 2 disc one damn I hope it comes with sunflower seeds.

Ciao!!!!
Just to tell y'all that I did some FURTHER research and the U.K. DVD is BRILLIANTLY the same as the U.S. dvd Indepedently the U.K. one comes out before the U.S. one ha ha ha ha.

Can i play AVI file in DVD player?

Sarfraz

If i burn an AVI file on a CD and play in DVD player, will it be played?

Answer
Depends on the DVD player. Some players have the ability to play .avi files but others do not. You need to read the manual on your DVD player to find out for aure if yours can. Just remember, if yours can, others may not be able to, so don't expect others to be able to watch an .avi video you burned on cd with their DVD players.

DVD players ???

Ben A

Hi, If I purchase a dvd player that plays divx does this mean that this player will play .avi files ?? It is so much quicker to burn a downloaded avi to a dvd+r rather than having to convert the avi to dvd and then burn it, and I was just looking to save time by finding a player that will play avi's.

Thanks

Answer
Many DVD players out there claim playing divx, however they don't always work.
The standard format is the .Vob/.Ifo - MPEG2 format, the files you have now are in AVI format..

I would recommend you download ConvertXtoDVD. Ive been using it for a year now, never had a problem!

It will convert your video files to the dvd format readable by all standard dvd players, then burn automatically to DVD.

it is easy to use, fast and it works perfect for me.. give it a try, you'll love it

1. Download ConvertXtoDVD here:
http://www.burner-software.com/AVI-to-DVD-Converter/AVI-DivX-XVid-to-DVD.php?exact=ConvertXtoDVD3

It can convert any video file.. like wmv, mpeg, asf, mp4, avi to dvd

2. Add or drag-n-drop as many video files as the DVD can handle

3. Insert blank DVD

4. Click "Convert"

5. Enjoy watching those video files on your home DVD player! =)

ConvertXtoDVD has a lot of extra nice features too,
for example you can make your own ANIMATED DVD menu or auto-generate it, add subtitles, auto-burn to dvd or save your conversion.

A question about DVD and VCR player/recorder.?

L3

How can you tell if your player, that plays both DVD and VHS also records? I mean I'm pretty sure it does record, since I believe there is a record button on it. But would that be the type of 'recorder' that is needed to convert a VHS onto DVD, or is a 'DVD and VCR player/recorder' something completely differenet. And if not, how would one go about doing it?

In case you couldn't tell, I don't have a lot of electronics know how.
So there's no way to use just my player to convert my VHS that I already have recorded, onto a dvd?

Answer
It sounds like you have a VHS recorder/ DVD player unit. A unit like that will not convert a VHS tape into a DVD. What you need is a VCR recorder/DVD recorder.

If you let us know the make and model it should be easy to research online what type you have.

Does anyone know if and how you can connect a DVD/VCR recorder/player to a computer to convert videos to DVDs?

Terosia W

I have a lot of videocassettes that i want to convert to dvd to preserve them, some are from when we were kids; also i have a lot of cassette tapes and i wonder if they too can be converted to a dvd or cd format. my late father and grandmother are featured in these tapes and they contain a lot of family history. I heard that getting an s-video cable might do this, but perhaps if someone knew of a website that could show me step by step how to connect up and use the set-up would be great. I am by no means a computer technician but with simple terminology and instructions I might be able to make this work.

Answer
You need to convert the VHS signal into one that your computer can read. To do this you need a special card that receives such signals. âATI All in one Radonâ or some of the products produced by âWin TVâ. The ATI card is more expensive, but it has the signal processing system integrated into the card, however that limits the capability of the video card a little. The Win TV basic card will give you the capability, but it will be a pretty poor image (I used to have one, to do exactly what you want to do, and it didn't work). The higher end Win TV cards might do better. Ideally you want one that can receive the same signals that your Cable TV sends.

Normally your computer is only equipped with OUTPUT jacks, it sends the sound to the speakers and a special video signal to the monitor. As signal that has little to do with the way TVs and VCRs handle their video signal. The audio signal is handled in a similar fashion, but unless you have a high-end audio card then you will only have a single mono input jack. If you use that jack then you lose any stereo you had on your VHS tapes.

The VHS signal is closer to an analog signal when compared to how a DVD signal is, so you have to convert the VHS signal into a television signal, then you can carry it over standard RCA lines or a S-Cable and standard RCA audio lines. Then you need to connect these cords to the INPUT jacks on the computer card. Then you can read that television signal and record it on the DVD Player in an analog or digital format. Remember, that a copy is only as good as the original so the simplest format you can use will be good enough.

The new generation of DVD players have a record capability. I am waiting for the price to go down before I try any conversion routine. I think that for what you plan you need to look into Recording DVD Players. They will take the same signal that your VCR already uses and accept it to record on the DVDs, with less conversion their will be less static and noise created in the recording process.

Where Can I buy a spare battery for my TruTech PVS12701 Portable DVD Player?

HENRY M

I have a Tru tech Portable DVD player and the battery is starting to wear out ,Cant play more than a hour.I need to get a replacemrnt. Is there a website that I can go to do buy this replacement battery

Answer
I don't know where to find a replacement battery for that portable DVD player. I even tried to find it on google and no luck. If your portable DVD player is under a year old, you might be covered for warranty. If it's older than that and you don't have a warranty extension, then you should just look for a new portable DVD player. They are under $100 now. http://www.walmart.com/search/browse-ng.do?ic=24_0&ref=125875.129742&fromPageCatId=62055&catNavId=62055

How to hook up a dvd vcr player to record a tv program?

How to hook up my dvd vcr player to my tv and digital cable set top box (Time Warner Cable), so sometimes, i can record a program? I don't wanna subscribe a TWC DVR because i don't oftenly record. That's why i just subscribe a regular top box set. I tried a couple times to hook up my dvd vcr player (APEX ADV-3850) , but i still failed. Anybody helps. Thanks.
Is there only ANT IN and RF OUT on my dvd vcd player. There is no ANT OUT, so what should i do?
There is only ANT IN and RF OUT on my dvd vcr player. There is no ANT OUT to tv on my dvd vcr player. So, what should i do, Eddy?

Answer
First, connect the DVD/VCR to your TV. Make sure you know how to switch the TV's input so you can either watch cable, or watch a DVD in the DVD/VCR.

Ok. Now look on the back of the cable box. There should be multiple outputs - one of which is in use by your TV. What you want to do is use one of the other outputs to connect to your DVD/VCR. For best results, use the the yellow/red/white output, if possible. Connect the output from the cable box to the INPUT of the DVD/VCR.

Set your TV to use the DVD/VCR. Now set the DVD/VCR to use the input where you connected the cable box. For instance, on my deck, this is called "IN2." You should now see the output from your cable box on the TV.

Hurrah, we're almost done.

You can now pop in a VHS tape and record.

Remember - you cannot watch one channel, and record another - the signal is coming from the cable box, and it only has 1 tuner.

If you wish to make a scheduled recording, set the VCR as normal - BUT instead of specifying the channel, specify the input where the cable box is connected! (eg. "in2") Now then, you must then leave the cable box set to the channel you wish to record. The VCR cannot control the cable box - it will only record whatever output is coming from the cable box at that time. This means if you leave the cable box on "Sci-Fi", then that's what the VCR will record.

Some cable boxes allow you to create "timers" which will tell the cable box to change the channel at a specific time. This is so that an external device, like your VCR, can record a program at a specific time.

For example, say you wanted to record NBC from 8pm to 9pm, and then Sci-Fi from 9pm to 10pm. On the VCR, you would create a single recording event to go from 8pm to 10pm using the input where your cable box is. Now, on the cable box, you would create 2 timers. One would change the channel to NBC at 8pm, and the 2nd would change the channel to Sci-Fi at 9pm.

Seriously, I would consider upgrading to the DVR. Yeah, it's another $10 a month or so, but DVRs allow you to do some really powerful stuff. Furthermore, if you subscribe to the HD channels, a DVR is the only way to record those channels in their original HD format.

From using a VCR, you already know about the power of recording a show for later viewing at your convenience and how you can fast forward through the commercials. Unlike a VCR, however, you only need to tell a DVR to record a show by name (e.g. "CSI" ) The DVR then searches its internal TV guide for that show and schedules the recordings for you. Enter all your shows into the DVR, and it will figure out when to record everything. The DVR will try to avoid re-recording a rerun, so for instance, if you tell it to record South Park, you should only get each episode once a week, as opposed to that same episode 10 times a week.

The DVR will download an updated TV schedule each day, so if a show of yours gets rescheduled (which is something FOX loves to do!) you don't have to worry - the DVR will catch the change, and update its list of what to record when. Have a conflict? Sometimes a show will rerun late at night. You may not know when, but your DVR will.

This is only the simplest feature of a DVR. Trust me. Once you go DVR, you'll never, ever want to go back to live TV or a VCR. But don't pitch your VCR just yet... You can use the above setup to record a show from the DVR to your VCR, in case you want to preserve a show for your archives.

Can a VCR or DVD player send cable tv to a tv through s video connection?

kirt d

My tv's cable "screw" in back broke off but it has s video and the usual audio/video input. If I connect my tv cable to a vcr or dvd player and then connect a s video to my tv or audio/video to my tv, will tv play tv or just play dvds and vrc movies?

Answer
The VCR or DVD player must have an RF input ("screw connector"). If you have a cable box, connect it's output to the VCR or DVD and set the channel on it to 3 or 4 to match the cable box output. If you have no cable box, then connect the cable directly to the VCR or DVD. This will only work if the VCR or DVD is cable ready, and can tune through the cable channels. The VCR or DVD can be connected to your TV with the S or AV cables. Remember that the S doesn't have audio. You still need the red and white RCA cables friom the AV set. S is the preferred video cable.

Can a new 2011 blu ray DVD player with built in wi-fi function with a 10 year old big box TV that isn't HD?

Rob

My old multi-disc DVD player has died. I need to replace it but it seems most of the DVD players out are blu ray. At least the ones worth buying. I have my eye on a Samsung 5700 blu ray DVD player with built in wi fi. Now it seems that they work best with HDTVs but I know that is only if you plan on playing blu ray DVDs and you want the best picture quality from the disc. I stick with DVDs, I review films for a living and most of the DVDs I get are regular DVDs plus I really don't care about picture quality, as long as the image is clear. I want to know if the newer model blu ray DVD players will work with my 10 year old Samsung TV which is a big heavy box, not an HDTV. My friend who is somewhat knowledgeable about DVD players has said yes, I've read reviews where people with 20 year old TVs were able to stream the wi fi onto their TVs, but someone from Best Buy I'm positive didn't know much about DVD players said no modern blu ray player will be compatible with an older model TV. I need to have an HDTV. My TV still works fine and I can't afford an HDTV and a Blu Ray player at the same time but the player is essential for my work. Can you all please help me, let me know if a modern model blu ray player will work on my 10 year old non HDTV? If not, what is my next option? Thanks.

Answer
Check the blu ray disc player and your old tv and see what it offers for video and audio connections. If the blu ray disc player has the output for video and audio that can be used for your tv then it will work. Personally I would recommend a Panasonic player, they are the most reliable and trouble free player in the market. I have a first generation player from Panasonic model BD-10 which is over 4 years old and played over 300 blu ray disc movies without having one problem. They always have a player that is recommended each year by Home Theater Magazine. Hope this will help you out.

My Blu-Ray player can play DVD but not Blu-Ray?

psych23232

I asked about my Blu-Ray player before, Panasonic DMP-BDT210, that it can't play my Blu-Ray movies.

But my mother put in a DVD movie and somehow it plays the DVD. But when I put in a Blu-Ray movie, I get the message "Cannot read, check the disc."

That doesn't make sense to me. This is a Blu-Ray 3D player and it played Blu-Ray movies before but now it can't read them, yet it can play DVD's and CD's?

What the heck is wrong with the player?

Answer
First of all have you ever updated your 3D Blu-Ray player's firmware before from the default that came along. IF NOT go to Panasonic's website and look firmware to your model of your Panasonic player. Sometime you need to do that in order to play certain movies, IF there are NO parts problems. When I first got Terminator 2: Judgment Day Skeynet Edition it would not load up to the menu screen and stay at the loading wait on my Pioneer BDP-51FD. So I looked online for info, and that got me to do my very first firmware update, and NOT leave it at the default firmware that came along. This was back in late May or early June of 2010. After I updated the firmware to 1.65 from the company's site. I had never update my Blu-Ray player's firmware since I got it in mid February of 2009.

I had this problem when the remake of True Grit was released back in June of 2011. I got it the second or third day. The first time I put it in my Pioneer BDP-51FD it would not play, after it finished saying closed and went to loading. It would stay at that to a certain point(I would guess it always the same amount of time), and then a message would show up on the HDTV screen and player's little screen saying "Can't Play This Disc" and Unknown Disc. Back then I didn't know what was going on, The first seven time I have try it in the player, it did not play at all, and the same thing happen. Altogether I try the disc in the player 22 times with in a week and three days. It only worked three different times in the player. Then my guess was that either the disc hates my player the player hates the disc or this disc of True Grit out of so many made has problems. I just return it to Costco in the end, but before doing that I did try the disc on my friend's PS3, and it work the first time in there. I also tryed it on my uncle's Sony Blu-Ray player, it also worked the first time in there.

Move forward to mid August 2011 certain Blu-Rays I got way before the release of True Grit(remake) had worked in the my Pioneer player with no problems. The first one I notice with that problem was Casino, I had got that back in early April of last year, and it had always worked. Ever since mid August more and more started not to play on the player, with the same problem as True Grit. What I have notice was when it would not play and with the same messages is that there is no fan like spinning sound, when it does disc loading. I have also sat in front of the Blu-Ray player, with the TV sound turn down to listen and notice no fan like spinning sound. When I first had this problem I had also found two forums with sections devoted to my player. One is a section at http://www.avsforum.com, with 992 pages, and at http://www.blu-ray.com. As time went on the Blu-Rays that did not play on the Pioneer, that had worked before with no problems are The Magnificent Seven, Cop Out, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, Never Say Never Again(sometime works sometime don't), Spy Game, Apocalypse Now, Die Hard With A Vengeance(sometime works sometime don't), and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I Have not try all of my Blu-Rays in the player. Sometime new ones I get will not play the first time in the player like Taken, Pulp Fiction, Rounders, X-Men: First Class and The Guns Of Navarone. Sometime there are new one that will still play first time in the player, like Cowboy And Aliens. It just will it still play as time go by say two and half months later.

What the people on the two forums have said was either one of these is the problem

The laser lens is dirty (Use a Blu-ray laser lens cleaner to clen it the kind that come with a brush. IF it more stubborn, open up the player and use Q-tip to clean it.)

The laser lens is starting to die

The drive could be starting to die( one person said the drive for the model I have, have known problem)

They say it has nothing to do with the firmware update, which I did do since I updated mine from 1.65 to 1.71 when there was problems with playing True Grit and then to 1.72 when my older Blu-Rays started not to play that use to with no problem. And still the problem is still there for me.

One thing no one have said was how to tell is the laser lens just dirty and it not starting to die at all.

When I told my uncle about it, he told me it parts can't be dying at all. It must be like a record player when there a little piece of bread crum on it, it will not play the record in it right way. I have yet to buy a blu-ray laser lens cleaner and try that. I know all those disc will work in another player. Right now 100% no problems with the DVD and CD side of the Blu-Ray player.

The best thing for you is to ask a home theater expert or store a worker that sell this kind of stuff like at Best Buy and Magnolia Hi-Fi or those good mom and pop kinds. Also try the disc at friend and relative's player to see does it work. Last of all look for forums devoted to your player, and post questions
