Buying a portable dvd player?

poodle

I want to buy one as a present for my husband for when he flys on business (which is often) but I don't want to spend loads on it at all. What is a good deal and what do I need to look for in a portable dvd player? What features should it have and what size should it be etc.

Answer
When shopping for a portable DVD player, keep in mind how you will be using the device. For example, if you plan to use a portable solely in the car to keep the kids occupied on long road trips, then the screen size and the inclusion of an AC adapter, which will allow you to power the player via your vehicle's power outlet, are more important than the unit's weight or the life expectancy of the battery. Conversely, if you are buying a portable DVD player to take with you on long flights, look for a lightweight model with plenty of battery life. If you usually travel with a spouse or colleague, or if you have two kids, opt for a model with dual headphone jacks and a larger screen size so two people can comfortably enjoy a movie while sitting next to each other.

Is there any point in buying an expensive DVD player?

zarreff

I bought my DVD player from walmart 4 years ago for 20 bucks and it still works perfectly. All DVD players play DVD's so why would any pay more than 20 bucks for one?

Another thing too; if anything happens to my DVD player well it was only 20 bucks...other people spend over 100 bucks on theres so if that goes out they gotta shell out more dough.

Answer
At this point, no.

It's more financially better to buy a Blu-Ray player as it plays both DVD and Blu-Ray and it can usually upscales the DVD's movies and shows or whatever.

Or if you are a gamer, you should buy a PS3 or an Xbox 360. It has the DVD capability that you might be interested in.

What portable dvd player should we buy?

Jess

We are going on a vacation this summer and since we will be in the car for a while we would like to get the kids dvd players. We did have the kind where there are 2 tvs and they attach to the headrest. They just don't work at all now. Not sure what happened to them. We were thinking about getting them each there own dvd player to hold now. Our girls are 2 and 5 though. Any suggestions on good kid friendly dvd players? I'm not really a huge fan of the fisher price kid dvd players. We also thought about just getting special covers for dvd players but I'm not sure where to find them.

You need to get an HD media player instead, DVD players are very limited in their files and codec support. I have a Western Digital and it has played EVERYTHING i have thrown at it.

do i need to upgrade my dvd player if i buy an LCD tv?

Fuzzy

Answer
It depends. Is the TV you are buying HDTV? If no then I see no reason to.

However if it is HDTV, then maybe ... If you have a recent vintage DVD player that can output progressive scan (480p) it isn't really necessary as you will get a very good picture. However if you have an older DVD player or have the spare cash I woudn't hesistate to go for an upconverting DVD player.

Whatever you do, please make sure you use the proper cabling to get the best possible picture. With an older progressive scan DVD player that would be component video cables. With an upconverting DVD player that would be HDMI cable.

but dont get sucked in to buying "monster" type cables. They are overpriced.

Should I buy a 720p dvd player to go with a 720p lcd tv or will my 420p dvd player work?

james

The quality of the picture is pretty important to me.

Also, I've heard that most lcd tvs can convert a 420p signal to a 720p.
Is this the same thing as buying a 720p dvd player?

Answer
By 720p dvd player I guess you are talking about a blu ray. A blu ray will look much better than a standard dvd disk. HD tvs do convert any signal they receive to their native resolution, but if you send your tv a 480 dvd pic, it will just convert a poor signal to a large screen. A blu ray will send you a full 720 lines of resolution and look much clearer. It can send a 1080p signal, but with a 720p tv, that's all you will see, 720p. Still an excellent pic.

Use HDMI or red/green/blue component cables to connect blu ray to your tv.

Q. Ideas to keep four kids from driving me nucking futsages from 15 to 8. I plan on buying a portable dvd playerbut I know that wont last three days in the car.Help please.

Answer
Well welcome to the Show Me State! You have a great idea about bringing the portable DVD player; they do sell a âpowerâ stripe that plugs into your lighter in the car. Coleman makes it and it cost about $25. Might be worth getting so you donât use up all of your battery power. They make portable travel games like Connect 4, Battleship, Sorry and that type of thing; they are cheap and fun and can be found at places like Wal-Mart or your local toy store. I would also bring things like crosswords, word searches and Mad Libs. This will keep the kids busy for a while and cheap form of entertainment. If you have some hand held video games bring those for the kids to do. If you donât have a system they sell hand held games pretty cheap and again it will keep the kids busy for a while. Why not give each kid a disposable camera and a âjournalâ or scrap book they can write about their journey and add the pictures later. Great way for them to preserve their memories of the move. Let the kids help with the trip, the ones that are old enough have them be the co-pilot for a while and read the map. Have each kid pick out a place they want to stop at before you go. That way they feel like they helped. Bring a deck of UNO Cards or playing cards, go fish can last forever! I would also bring paper, crayons, and maybe even color pages. The kids can draw for something to do. Make up a family CD of music have each person pick some songs they like and make a mixed CD.
There are plenty of car games that the family can play. 20 Questions is good, or I Spy takes up some time. Play car bingo you can either make up boards or print them from the web. Play Finish That Story have one person start and continue on to the rest of the car. Counting Cows game who ever gets the most wins. License Plate lingo is good, try to make words out of the letters on the plate such as GLD is girls like diamonds. License plate bingo make up boards with different states whoever gets bingo wins. License plate game keep a running tally of states that are different then yours again whoever gets the most wins. There is also Get 100 have everyone pick out a color, next they have to spot 100 things with that color. Whoever gets to 100 first wins. Slug Bug is always a good game, the slugging part is always optional. Take some trivia cards and ask each other questions, whoever gets the most right wins. Here are some other game suggestions:
TWO TRUTHS AND ONE LIE: The player tells the group three statements about himself or herself. Two are true and one is a lie. Everyone tries to guess which one is the lie.
GEOGRAPHY: Can be played with animals also. Start with an animal or a place name --California, for example. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of "California"
BUILDING WORDS: Build a word one letter at a time. Each successive player adds a letter and must have a real word in mind.
BUZZ: Try to reach 100 without making a mistake. Every time you get to a number that's divisible by seven (7, 14, 21) or has a seven in it (17), say "Buzz" instead of the number.
THE CAR NEXT DOOR: Invent stories about people in the car next to yours.
ALPHABET WORDS: Pick a letter and find words or objects starting with that letter. Move through the alphabet. Or play as a memory game - A is for apple; B is for __. The second player must remember what "A" was for, and so on through the alphabet.
SCAVENGER HUNT IN THE CAR: Make up a list of things to find along the road. Work as individuals or together as teams.

Here are some helpful travel game sites that we use to plan our trips:

This site has some really good ideas!

I would also bring pillows so they can SLEEP that is always good! Be sure to bring a cooler with drinks and snacks. Have the kids go shopping with you and pick out things. I also recommend stopping at the rest stops for lunch, bring sandwiches, chips and veggies. Stop for lunch at the rest stop the kids can play on the playground or run around and get some energy out. If you can bring a ball and a bat or Frisbee something like that so they can play a game or two. When all else fails ear plugs (ha ha ha). Have a great trip if you let me know your route to MO I might be able to suggest some places, drive from MO to CA a lot. Good-luck on your move!

What's the best tablet to buy?

VernitaB

I need a cheap, durable tablet for my young kids to use. I have 4 kids so we do a lot of waiting (dr appts, ballet, basketball practice). All I need is something portable that they can share that takes a memory card (so i can download movies on there). I dont need any apps or GPS - just something to keep my kids attention! I was thinking the Coby Kyros ( I am NOT a Coby fan, but it got decent reviews on amazon) or the Archos 7. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I'm neither a coby fan have a coby dvd player a piece of junk , the archos 7 is a better deal for the kids 199 dollars, and now for the adults meaning you take a look at the samsung galaxy tablet and worth the price

Looking for customer reviews for Philips PET7402 37 7-Inch Dual Screen Portable DVD Player?

Where can I find reviews and opinions online for Philips PET7402 37 7-Inch Dual Screen Portable DVD Player

Answer
By A. Quan
This DVD player has been performing as designed, keeping in mind the reviews from other models. I bought it new in Target. It is true that usually the 2nd screen is not as crisp & sharp as the main unit, but to average joes and kids, such discrepancy is easily overlooked.

What I will be doing is install the DVD player & 2nd screen in my van when we are going on road trips that takes 45 mins at least. Otherwise, the products stay inside my house where it's safe and cool. I'll see if they will last me at least a year! I'll update my comments after a year or when my unit conked out, whichever comes first.

Tv question?!? streaming netflix? (more info provided)?

MarissaBan

I do not have an HD tv in my room its a regular tv. I was wondering if I bought one of those dvd players and can connect to the internet if I would be able to stream netflix? I also have wifi in my house.

Answer
Yes, if you buy a wifi capable Blu-ray you'll be able to stream Netflix to you CRT TV. Unless you need a blu-ray player, save your money and buy this Roku streaming player insteand of the Blu-ray:

http://www.amazon.com/Roku-2450D-LT-Streaming-Player/dp/B008R7EVE4/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1353441364&sr=1-4&keywords=roku

All Roku's have analog A/V outs as well as HDMI to output to your tv.

I'm a huge proponent of Roku, mine saves me $60 a month on my cable bill

Are there any DVD players that can hook up to Netflix?

My sister told me about these DVD players that can connect to your wifi and even access Netflix. Is that so? Do you know of any? Links would be great :)

Thanks!

Answer
No. However most all Blu Ray players do. Look on the web. Just google "blu ray player".

how does a dvd player upconvert a standard dvd to 1080p?

trkshorty2

what does the dvd player do?

Answer
A Standard DVD picture is 720x480.
The DVD player needs to scale that picture to 1920x1080.
There are many techniques used that combine pixel interpolation with motion estimation/compensation; however, in its simplest form, pixel interpolation will work.
Note that all HDTVs can scale as well, some even better than upconverting DVD players, so try you player with 480i or 480p output and see what your TV does. You may be surprised!!

Dvd players that play 1080p mkv?

The Great

Answer
There are several problems with your question:

* You made a statement and put a question mark at the end. This is not a question. I assume you are looking for a DVD player that can play mkv files? (Your English teacher is shaking her head in sorrow).

* A DVD player is a standard def device. It is locked into 480 lines of video. It can never support anything higher than that.

* A DVD player is a standard def device in a HDTV world. Why, why, why would you consider buying one of these?

* A MKV file is like a zip file - it is a container that can hold video encoded in many different formats. This makes it one of the more difficult file types to handle.

* Some DVD players play DVD+R, some -R. What type of burner do you have?

* etc.

My advice: save up $99 and go buy a Western Digital TV Live box. This thing will play most of your computer files from a USB flash drive, or stream wirelessly from your PC. It also give you lots of streaming apps (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Pandora, etc.).

I have done the whole "Convert/burn/play" thing and it takes HOURS, and often does not work right. The WD box is much simpler.

Bose Acoustimass 10, Pioneer Elite VSX-9* Receiver, DVD player, Sony HDTV Rear Projection?

ShaunAZ

Ok, I have a 60" Sony HDTV Rear Projection I think the KDS series. I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-9* series receiver since my house is wired for surround round and speakers throughout and this receiver I thought was good for multi-room control. My DVD player is just a standard upconvert Toshiba and it's hooked up via an HDMI cable. I'm pretty sure I know how to hook up the Bose to the receiver since it's all just plug-n-play but i'll figure it out. These Bose speakers will be ceiling mounted via Bose brackets and the walls are already pre-wired with the little wall plate that i can use the banana plugs to attach the wiring.

My question is what is the most efficient way to hook this up together (DVD HDMI to receiver, etc.)? I'm sure I don't know what I'm doing (Bose haters don't comment please, lol) to put together the best setup but now you know what I'm working with. Thanks for any advice.

Answer
Okay, no comments on the BOSE speakers from me.
;-)

But the 9* series from Pioneer all support audio through HDMI, so you should go from your DVD to receiver, from your cable box to receiver, then let your receiver switch the video for you.

The VSX-92TX has three HDMI inputs, so you can add a DVD player, Blu-ray Player and HD receiver all to the receiver and assign the digital inputs.

The VSX-94 has 4 in and the 91 has 2 in.

If you go through the TV first and then to the receiver, chances are you will not be able to select the dts tracks on your DVD's, which are ususally the better audio option.

Anyone know of a good portable DVD player that can be mounted on the "ceiling" of ur car thats affordable?

video formating , my dvd player can play AVI-divx np what about xvid?

rooroo109

i have a vid conveter i can use i had a bruce lee movie that was in a AVI-divx format which i burned striaght to dvd with np and it played ! i was stunned i couldnt believe it i have been making coasters for a while now trying to figure it out lol being new to it all but my question is since finding xvid files are way more common to download with more seeders out there but once i DL the avi-xvid file to my computer im guessing i need to convert it to to divx ? the thing is when i chose the TO AVI option the first settings are (divx-xvid ) compatable is what it says . does that mean that the file will playable by my dvd player which plays avi-divx so will it play xivd too? or once i convert it to that do i need to take it another step further and again convert to (TO DVD) ? this is confusing at the least . the last time i asked this type of question i only got try this convert try that converter well they are pretty much the same and the queston would still remain so can any one please tackle this W/O suggesting a new converter please FYI. i am using AVS converter on a XP pro os thank you for your time.

Answer
no, divx and xvid are different video codec, your DVD player can play avi videos with divx encoder, but cann't play avi videos with xvid encoder, i think the better choice is make the standard video DVD from the movies, you can try RZ DVD Creator, it is a software, i have used it, it can create standard video DVD, it can directly convert and burn any videos to DVD(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-DL, DVD+DL, etc), such as avi to DVD, xvid to DVD, divx to DVD, etc. Offer the better quality.

Work well on my computer, i like it, and i believe that once you try it, you will like it too.
Following is a step by step guide:

Hope it can help you.

best deal on tv with dvd players?

Mandy's Pl

Answer
Don't get one. With DVD players down to $39, there's no reason to. If the player fails, it often takes the TV with it. Then you have to get the TV repaired.
There are many posts here in answers from people who have no TV because their DVD failed. Running out and buying a DVD player to hook yup to the TV isn't an option. You have to get it repaired-and it will cost a lot more than a new DVD player.

DVD player error???

Kape

recently i rented some DVDs to watch on my computer but some of the discs display errors such as the disc region is not the same as the region for the dvd player.

i know i am suppose to change the region for the dvd player but there is only a limited number of times i can change it and after that i would not be able to change it any more so is there any other way that i can watch the DVDs without changing the region as i do not want to waste the limited number of times that i can change the dvd player region.

Answer
There are some ways that you could deal with this. You are allowed four times to be able to change the region settings on your computer. Remember, though; changing it from region 1 to region whatever is one time, then changing it back to region one is two times. So, for one DVD, you've all ready changed it twice. You change it again to another region after you've changed it back to 1, then you're up to three times. Then after that DVD, you go back to 1 or some other region, and your stuck with what you have. Here are the options available to you: 1. See if the specific DVDs are available in region 1 or are all region. 2. Buy a multiregion DVD player. These are still a little pricy, but are coming down. 3. Buy a PS2, and they are mostly region free. If not, before powering it on, hold all four top buttons (L1, L2, R1, R2), and the up button, then power it on, and that will cancel out the region read. However, you must do that each time you turn it on. 4. See if there are any hack patches available to make the region changes unlimited. Hope this helps.

Which DVD player streams the best Netflix?

Bobo Bobst

Hi, I want to get a new BluRay player, but I want it to stream netflix in good quality. I know it depends greatly on connection speed but are there any bluray devices that perform a little better than others?

Answer
LG BD 550 is by far the best when it comes to Netflix streaming. I ended up returning all the others. BD550's Fast forwarding, fast rewinding is just way faster than any other unit I tried. It is even faster than Roku! Among these units, Samsung BD P1600 is the slowest. Also BD 550 not only shows your movies in the netflix instant queue, it also gives you option to pick movie you may like, what you've recently watched (even after you removed it from your instant queue), new arrivals, etc. It's just a perfect Netflix player. If you like Netflix's GUI interface, then just don't buy Sony N460! Sony completely screwed Netflix's GUI but Sony's GUI is just too awkwa

Toshiba Blu Ray Dvd player?

My hubby bought a Toshiba HDTV a couple weeks ago. I am thinking about getting him a blu-ray dvd player for Christmas to go along with it. I don't know a lot about these things, so any advice you have is greatly appreciated. :D I am looking online at Toshiba blu ray players, but like I said, since I don't have a lot of knowledge on these things, I would like some personal opinions. My husband plugs our tv into the computer, and watches a lot of netflix movies, so I need one that will allow him to do that....I would like to keep it around the $130 range, if possble. Thank you so much for any help you can give me! And happy holidays!

Buy this player for your hubby. It has many of the features he likes including Netflix. Free shipping and this company will ship before christmas. And it's within your budget. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_305BDC5500/Samsung-BD-C5500.html?tp=171
I buy from them all the time & their customer service is the best. You can call them for any problems with the player even if you have it for 5 yrs. They provide that service for free. Good day!

Make sure your dvd player will play region 1 dvds before you order it. Search other places online, maybe you can find it somewhere else.

Is there a type of mini DVD player that will allow you to get on the internet and watch netflix movies?

mikki

Answer
Dvd player that connects to the internet and plays Netflix streaming movies?

I'm afraid I haven't heard of such a thing either. But there's a good workaround this, you can for example record Netflix streaming movies for later watching on the mini dvd player or some other portable device.

I for one use some Audials software whenever I need to timeshift Netflix streaming movies or anything like that.

It actually works pretty great to record streaming movies from Netflix plus I also get to convert the recorded Netflix videos to whatever format I need for easier watching on any of my devices.

You should also give it a shot, should work good for your problem.

car dvd players?????

dazedconfu

are these worth it? what are some good brands?

Answer
I have an older model van and didn't want to put the expense into installing a DVD player in it permanently. We looked into portable DVD players but they seemed unstable and would mount lower than we wanted (most of them mounted in-between the front head rests so that people in the back seat would have a hard time seeing the screen) When we were getting ready to drive to Utah with small children we realized we needed something to keep them entertained. Then we found a dual screen portable DVD player and we love it. It is an RCA 7" 16:9 Portable DVD Player with Dual TFT-LCD Monitors. The two screens can be mounted separately and attach to headrests. (We put one on the front seat headrest and the second on the middle seat headrest) The screen is also the DVD player so there are only the two parts with a cable running between them. The nice thing about the one that we bought is that you can take it with you into a hotel room and it will play the DVD on a regular TV and it also comes with video games that can be played either while the second screen is watching a movie or displayed on a TV. (the video games aren't high graphics but are geared towards younger kids, although we had fun playing them too. Some of them are 80's knock-offs like frogger and centipede) The $200 was well worth the hours of quiet (non-fighting) travel time. Good luck!

DVD Playback on Windows Media Player 11?

Jeb

I have Windows XP and Windows Media Player 11, when I put in a DVD there is sound but no video how can fix this?

Answer
in order for windows media player to play dvds properly, they need a video codec - the easiest way is to find a free dvd player off the internet and then you will have the codec installed on your computer after that install - hope this helps as I dont have any suggestions for good free software but check at cnet downloads and download dot com for possibilities and make sure they are totally free, not free to try shareware

Where can I download a free DVD decoder program for Windows XP Media Player?

Calm Like

Answer
VLC may be worth a look:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I'm guessing that Windows Media Player will be able to use the decoder, but I'm not sure whether or not it will have to "find" it first, so let us know what happens.

Where can I get a free windows xp compatible dvd decoder for media player?

J.D.

I'm either looking for a decoder for windows media player or a free similar dvd player.

Answer
I would sugest you get the k lite codec pack because it comes with a dvd decoder (it allows you to play movies through windows media player) and more. I prefer the media player clasic that comes with the pack because it is faster, and supports more file formats including real and quicktime.
A codec pack has codecs for many types for video and audio with this pack there probably wont be a video or movie you can't play because it has it all, and the best part is its free

HEADREST DVD PLAYER for my car???

NDN

So, I need to get two 7'' DVD players inserted into the back of two headrests. I've only been able to find monitors meaning they don't have the DVD players with them. My question is... Where can I get them???

Serious answers only please.

Thanks in advance.
DEFINATELY, not a mom yet. Just want to trick out my car.

Answer
well is this just vanity or are you a mother of kids going out on a family vacation?

b/c if its just vanity to make your car look good or if its just for friends than the answer is its a waste of money...you might as well buy a portable dvd player and buy a strap or harness to attach it in between the two seats...dont forget to buy a converter adaptor as it might run out of battery.

you can check autoshops such as Pepboys , ACE, or Autozone....but if they dont have them in these places you can GOOGLE it and find related sites that may sell them...or better yet check any local audio/digital car shops that would be inclined to sell audio appliances and/or automobile entertainment devices.

Headrest dvd player in 2006 kia sedona?

$$$

I was thinking about buying one of the universal headrest DVD player for my 2006 Kia sedona but I read somewhere that it might not work. Anyone have any experience with this. I heard that due to the active headrest,it might not be possible to install. Also if it is possible what is a good brand that does not cost an arm and leg.

Answer
There shouldnt' be any reason why an active headrest would prevent you from installing a universal DVD player. The only thing that would keep it from working is if you got into an accident. Then the active headrest might break the strap of the DVD player or something like that....but even that might not happen. But if that ever happened, I doubt the portable DVD player would be your main concern. :-) Besides, if you got into an accident and have insurance, then your insurance company should cover the cost of anything in the vehicle that was damaged. Check with your insurance company.

My wife and I are looking at the Philips portable car DVD players that Wal-Mart carries on their web site. I think they have 7-inch and 9-inch screens. They're under $200.

Good luck and God bless!

What Blu-Ray Player can play A DVD, VCD and MP3 disk?

Rajveer

Answer
They all can play a DVD disk.
They all can play an MP3 disk. This is a disk like a cd rom with mp3s burned on it, for the person who asked.
Finding one to play VCD is a little tricker. Most can, but to be 100% certain you want to get one from an Asian manufacturer. VCD is still a popular format in Asia.

Will a Region A Blu-Ray player be able to play both region 1 and region 2 DVDs?

I am an American living in Japan. As such, I own many DVDs from the US and from Japan. I bought a region 0 DVD player several years ago. I am considering an upgrade to a Blu-Ray player. I know that Blu-Ray region A players will blay BD discs from the US and from Japan, as they are both Region A. I also know that Blu-Ray players are backward-compatible with DVDs. But, will a Blu-Ray player bought in Japan play DVD's from the US?

Answer
Do you mean a table top DVD Player..??
Or a Playback system on a home computer..??
Because I might have read that software..like Roxio 2011..//plays all the regions..
I would suggest you check that out..
Other than that..you need to read the Specifications of the ITEM at the time of purchase--and make a NOTE of that should you need to make a Return--for false claims.

SIMS 3 Installing issues, please advise- Internet connection and origin account required to play?

Anna

Hi, I recently received Sims 3 as a gift. However I have noticed there are two versions of the base game: the 2009 release (http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Sims-PC-Mac-DVD/dp/B0015YDH6O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1364158654&sr=8-2) and the 2012 release (http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Sims-3-PC-DVD/dp/B00AHRD69S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364158654&sr=8-1).

I have the latest version which states "internet connection, origin account, acceptance of product and origin end user license agreements, installation of the origin client software, registration with enclosed single-user serial codes and the latest sims 3 patch required to play."

This concerns me as I really would prefer to be able to install the game from the disc without needing origin, so if at any time in the future I want to install the game and origin is not available for whatever reason then it doesn't matter as the game will still work without it. Also I do not like the idea of having to download the game online, as this could be a real time-consuming hassle and makes me confused about the point of buying the disc at all.

I was told that I won't need origin or the internet to install and run the game I have, but from my understanding from what the package says I have been misinformed. However I could be worrying about nothing so if anyone could advise me that would be great. I've only ever played Sims 2 so this is all new to me.

Answer
You don't need origin to play. Origin is just the game connecting to the sims website through the internet. (Basically connecting with other players, buying in game accessories with real money, and sharing your in-game activities with FB or the sims website.) You do not need to connect to origin nor do you need an account.

I don't believe you'll need Internet to install the game since you have it on CD, but you will need the Internet to update with the current patches. Patches fix bugs in the game and generally make the game better. (A recent patch made the movement of the horse's legs in Sims 3 Pets look more natural.) You can check the website to see what exactly the patches are doing.

LCD TV question. HD ready.?

Zou

I want to buy HD ready lcd TV (resolution 1366x768 and not full HD with 1080p). IS MY OPINION CORRECT?

I do not have good quality/HDsources (DVDs, BluRays), because I rather download a 700 MB or rather 1.5 GB ripped films. In my country HD TV will be compulsory from 2012, and I am not intended to watch local TV ( I watch only Standard definition (480p) Free-to air satellite TV channels that I am interested in). I do not have BluRay player, and it's unlikely I will buy any original BR discs.
I am very visual person and bad pixeling disturbs me very much, so I am rather willing to spend for a sub HD lcd TV to have watchable TV channels on it than buy a popular full HD TV and suffer watching crap pixels.

What do you think? I consider brands like Sony, Toshiba, Sharp. In Hungary now I see Sharp LC37D44E and Toshiba 37AV635. Also Sharp LC42AD5( but an old 2005 model). I tend for Toshiba. What do you think?

Their price is the same as full HD, butprice is not important. I have now a 29" Sony CRT, great TV, but need a flat TV also and would be happy with 40" or 42 " TV, but 37" is what is available now :( whiich is still okay.

Answer
1 ) you ideal / concept is right , if ref to BUDGET / COST . but if you are looking into total display / colours quality and smooth pictures as you Sony old CRT TV , you are " wrong ". you away some important issue about LCD TV / motion blur / resolution between 720P / 1080P .
2 ) Technically , the only source provide full HD signals is via blu-ray . also our eye will not getting any resolution difference from an screen size below 40 inc TV.
is mean , if we don't watch movies from blu-ray , need not 1080P TV / or even via blu-ray movies from an screen size below 40 inc TV , 720P models is enough .
Remember , TV maker understand such issue more than any other and yet come out 1080P models from 32 inc . also consumer demand for 1080P models ( 32 inc onward ) is great , i should said mose of them who own 1080P TV do not watch blu-ray movies . still more to DVD and cable TV / free view on air channel that only provide 720P resolution .
all consumer are smart , no once paid more for nothings for sure .
3 ) The only reason is " total quality ".
TV maker take 720P models as standard entry level models , every designs are very standard ,( video circuit / refresh rate as 60 HZ .. ) because consider of selling prices !
TV maker take 1080P models as Mid or High End models.
to Support 1080P display , need difference / better grade LCD display panel . those LCD display panel use for 720P unable to use for 1080P models . somethings like low end PC monitor VS high end PC monitor !
to support better resolution display need better designs Video Enhance circuit . ( TV video circuit Amp = PC Graphics card ) ! somethings like low prices standard PC graphics card VS High End PC graphics card , any difference ?
4 ) to cover the motion blur due to LCD display response time , need fast refresh rate and fast response time display panel.
those 720P HD ready models use 6ms or even more response time display panel and 60HZ refresh rate . is really bad to sports movies / game ( any moving fast image ) , such " blur " usually make our eye uncomfortable . ( but some people okay )
TV maker only provide 120HZ ( even 240HZ ) into 1080P models also use lower as 4ms /5ms response time display panel ( some new hi end models even go for 2ms ) .
120 HZ refresh rate provide more smooth pictures than 60 HZ . but available in mid / high end models. is mean you unable to get 720P HD ready models with 120 HZ refresh rate.
5 ) Finally , this and that always make 1080P models much better in total pictures quality .
unless , you just need an TV . never demand for quality .
WARNING .
none of any LCD TV reach old CRT TV colours / smooth quality . if you change / upgrade from CRT TV to LCD TV , especial low end LCD TV models. you will be disappointed or need sometimes to accept it.
CRT TV rich in colour display / pure dark-black colours , LCD TV will NOT. ( high end models look better ).
CRT TV with out motion blur issue , LCD TV need high end models with 120 HZ to cover it.
Budget allow , LED TV ( LCD -LED back light ) really close to CRT quality. but cost much more.
for 40 inc and above , Panasonic Plasma is BEST in pictures quality amd PRICES. new Panasonic Plasma with out burn in / over heat / high power consumption issue.
^^^
Samsung / LG / Sharp / Sony / Panasonic / Toshiba manufactures quality / reliable LCD / LED TV.
6^^^
what is motion blur >
http://www.lcdtvreviews.org.uk/articles/relevance-of-response-time-in-rendering-picture-quality/
ADVICE. if my answer too technically , forget about " technical issue ".
LCD TV. go for 1080P 120 HZ models. very sure , if you use to Sony CRT TV, you never accept standard 720P 60 HZ LCD TV even not for blu-ray. is total quality that you need.

I have 5 speakers in my new flat and I want to connect my DVD player to it.?

CJ

The previous owner obviously had a surround sound setup with a woofer and 4 speakers around the corners of the room. My DVD player has 5 audio R/C jacks but when I hook them up to a speaker it is very quiet. Now I looked at prices of A/V recievers and they are 10 X more expensive than a DVD and 5 speakers cost. Is this the only way I can connect them up using a reciever device?

Answer
As others have said, YES. you need a surround amplifier (or receiver) to take the low level signal from the DVD player and "amplify" it to drive speakers. You need a model designated as a "5.1" ... i.e. one with 5 amplifier channels for the front right and left, center, and rear speakers, and an RCA output for a subwoofer. BTW, I suspect the 5 wires are for the normal speakers, not the subwoofer.

You can buy an adequate receiver (i.e. amp plus radio tuber in one unit) or amplifier new for under $200 (See link for one recommended choice), or simply look on Craigslist or other site for used equipment. You should have no trouble finding a 5.1 receiver for under $100. And any model will work fine since connections are standardized. Plan to use an optical or digital coax cable to connect the DVD player to the receiver ... so make sure the one you find has at least one input of that type.

DVD players ???

Hi, If I purchase a dvd player that plays divx does this mean that this player will play .avi files ?? It is so much quicker to burn a downloaded avi to a dvd+r rather than having to convert the avi to dvd and then burn it, and I was just looking to save time by finding a player that will play avi's.

Thanks

Answer
Many DVD players out there claim playing divx, however they don't always work.
The standard format is the .Vob/.Ifo - MPEG2 format, the files you have now are in AVI format..

I would recommend you download ConvertXtoDVD. Ive been using it for a year now, never had a problem!

It will convert your video files to the dvd format readable by all standard dvd players, then burn automatically to DVD.

it is easy to use, fast and it works perfect for me.. give it a try, you'll love it

1. Download ConvertXtoDVD here:
http://www.burner-software.com/AVI-to-DVD-Converter/AVI-DivX-XVid-to-DVD.php?exact=ConvertXtoDVD3

It can convert any video file.. like wmv, mpeg, asf, mp4, avi to dvd

2. Add or drag-n-drop as many video files as the DVD can handle

3. Insert blank DVD

4. Click "Convert"

5. Enjoy watching those video files on your home DVD player! =)

ConvertXtoDVD has a lot of extra nice features too,
for example you can make your own ANIMATED DVD menu or auto-generate it, add subtitles, auto-burn to dvd or save your conversion.

What are the pros and cons of buying a more expensive DVD player compared to a cheap one?

Andy

Answer
Today, 90% of the DVD players use the same DVD processor.

Cheaper players usually support MORE media and formats. They simply skip the royalty payments!!

Assuming exactly the same features, a more expensive player may last slightly longer. At this point, I would buy the cheapest DVD player with component out. They should last long enough while I wait for the BD players to go cheaper.

Help! My portable DVD player won't work!?

Miz J!

I put in a movie last night and the player said "no disc". I tried another disc & the same thing happened. I looked at the instruction manual to troubleshoot the player & that said nothing. I've had the DVD player for just about a month & it's a good brand name too. Help me out here people!
For some reason the DVD player is not reading the disc & I have moved the "eye" back & forth to help it along to no avail.

Answer
Check the disc you're using for scratches and dirt. If the disc is damaged it won't play properly, regardless of the DVD player's ability to function. You can use a DVD repair device like the "Disc Doctor" to repair the DVD or purchase a new DVD.
#
2
Make sure the discs you're using fit the correct format specified by your DVD player. For example, if your DVD player doesn't support home-burned DVD-R's, then you can't use a DVD that you made at home. You may need to upgrade to a newer model, most of which accept the latest DVD formats.
#
3

Clean the laser lens with a DVD laser lens cleaning disc. DVD laser lens cleaning discs can be purchased at most electronics retailers or online. Insert the laser lens cleaning disc and follow the instructions.
#
4

Insert a correctly-formatted, undamaged disc into your player. Listen to see if it begins to read the disc. If it continues to make no sound and gives you the same message, then the problem is probably that your disc is not spinning in the device.
#
5

Turn the device off and unplug it. Take off the outer casing by removing the three or four screws and lifting the top piece off. This will allow you to see if anything is simply stuck or jammed. If this is the case, a simple nudge back to the correct position will fix the problem.
#
6

Clean the lens while the DVD player is open. A dirty lens is most likely the cause of your no-disc error. The lens should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.
#
7

Take your DVD player to have it professionally fixed only when none of these other solutions solves the problem. A professional repair technician will be able to tell you if fixing your DVD player is worth the money.

if any of these don't work, then i can not help you

Tips & Warnings

*
If you open the DVD player and find you don't know anything about what you see, it might be best to have a professional take a look at it instead.
*

need help with vlc player for linux?

beanie_bab

I'm new to linux and I'm using ubuntu. I tried playing dvd's using vlc and they won't play. No idea what I'm doing, could use some advice. I also have virtual box installed but I could't get the dvd to play on that either. It said I had no compatible players installed. Please help!

Answer
DVD playback doesn't work with Linux out of the box due to no "libdvdcss" package included for copyright reasons. You need to go to System > Administrator > Synaptic Package Manager and look for "libdvdcss" and install it.

Would it be possible to put linux on a portable dvd player?

shueyboy

Something like ipodlinux that would accommodate its limited controls. Any specific linux flavors, or would it require a new one altogether?

Answer
I think your talking about a live DVD which allows you to boot your linux distro without touching your hard drive,.

Many flavours have live dvd's
