Any free to play DVD's on my Windows PC (XP)?

spcexcel

I've tried trial versions of this and that, as well as free junk that turned out not to work at prvsoft.com.

Nero seems to have turned into nothing more than a gimmick company selling software for people trying to somehow copy or rip off DVD's, it used to be a regular dvd playing software company.

So is there any truly free way, that works, to watch regular DVD's on my windows PC? I know roxio and stuff will do it for $15 or $20, but am I missing any free option that works...

thanks in advance.
No ... Windows media player does not play hollywood DVDs, unless a DVD Encoder was installed on your machine already. Even microsoft says, you have to go somewhere else and pay for it.
See this:

Answer
Gom or VLC player will play dvds on your xp. both of them are free

Can you recommend a free DVD decoder for Window's XP?

NMPD

The only ones that Microsoft recommends require payment. When using a Mac interface, I can run DVDs without having to buy any software. Surely there's a way that I can do the same with Windows XP?

Answer
Just download VLC Player.

Or if you want to use only WMP, download K-Lite codecs.

Where can I download a free DVD decoder program for Windows XP Media Player?

Calm Like

Answer
VLC may be worth a look:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I'm guessing that Windows Media Player will be able to use the decoder, but I'm not sure whether or not it will have to "find" it first, so let us know what happens.

Where can I get a free windows xp compatible dvd decoder for media player?

J.D.

I'm either looking for a decoder for windows media player or a free similar dvd player.

Answer
I would sugest you get the k lite codec pack because it comes with a dvd decoder (it allows you to play movies through windows media player) and more. I prefer the media player clasic that comes with the pack because it is faster, and supports more file formats including real and quicktime.
A codec pack has codecs for many types for video and audio with this pack there probably wont be a video or movie you can't play because it has it all, and the best part is its free

I have a new PC tower with a 16X Double Layer DVD burner. Windows XP Pro. Want to make burnt DVD's of my movies for a backup, that will play in any regular TV DVD player. Thanks!

Answer
I'd probably go to download.com and get a free DVD ripper. Although most ones will have limitations, it's not that bad but unless you want to pay, you don't have many other choices. By the way, is this to make backups, or "backups" ;-)

How do I rip a DVD unto my computer and then convert it to Ipod format?
