Do I need an upscaling DVD player with my new HDTV?

g c

Hello. I Just got a Panasonic TH-42PX60U. I have an older Panasonic DVD-S35 DVD player (progressive scan). I'm about to go out and buy component cables (not S-video cable which is the only other plug in the back of the dvd player).

Should I buy the component cables or just go buy a new upscaling DVD player?

Thanks from a true newbie.

Answer
Just use the DVD player you have for now. Component cables will get you great picture quality and you will be able to take advantage of the progressive scan capabilities of your DVD player with these as well. Make sure you enable this option on your DVD player. It will either be in the on screen setup menu or as a switch on the unit itself.

You're TV has a built in upscaler that will automatically scale the 480p resolution sent out by your DVD player to the native resolution of the display. The reason why upconverting DVD players exist is just because they have chips that try to do it better than the built in upscalers. Some DVD players excel at this and some do it no better or even worse than the TV.

Will it make a difference if you had a very good quality upconverting DVD player such as an OPPO? Yes it would make a difference. Is it worth dumping a perfectly good DVD player and buying a $200+ one? No. The difference in picture quality will be minimal and mainly discernable in text. Most people will not be able to tell the difference watching the actual movie from normal viewing distances.

Also, when you go buy component cables, DO NOT let them sucker you into Monster or other expensive cables that will claim to increase your picture quality. Either get a generic phillips or something brand for fairly cheap or buy them from www.monoprice.com. Try not to spend over $20 for a 6 foot cable.

Enjoy your television. It is an excellent plasma.

P.S. turn the video settings off "Vivid" and to "standard". Vivid will oversaturate some colors and make things look unnatural.

HDTV and DVD Players?

travis ric

I know this is a stupid question but in not that great at this kind of electronics. Just computers but, do i need a special DVD player to play high def movies, or do i just need HDMI cords for regular players.

Answer
you need an up-scaling dvd player but they don't upconvert to full 1080p only Blu-ray players do. chances are it your player has an hdmi out it is of the upconverting type. your question on the hdmi "cables" is abit confusing since only one is required for HD and it is capable of carring both the audio and vidio signals from your dvd player to your HDTV

Would you buy a DVD player or a Blu-Ray?

I am going to purchase a player, but now that the Blu-Rays have come out, it seems foolish to buy a DVD player as they may be obsolete after a while.

Answer
i see no reason to buy a blue ray since i have an HD tv.....

Should I buy an HD DVD player to prolong my Blu Ray player's life?

Cazaimex

I currently own a 4 year old Samsung DVD/VCR machine, a 7 month old PS3, a 3 month old Full HD LCD Samsung TV, a HUGE collection of DVDs, a couple of PS3 games and handful of Blu Ray movies. Personally I prefer to play DVDs on the Samsung machine and not the PS3 (so I can prolong its life since I already play games and watch Blu Ray movies on it). Unfortunately it seems that the DVD player on my Samsung DVD/VCR machine is starting to give in (movies tend to stick more frequently these days, even after a proper cleaning of the lens).

Now, I can either switch to watching my DVDs on my PS3, or I can purchase a decent brand of HD DVD player (Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, LG, etc). I think the second option is better, because then my poor PS3 won't be taxed with having to play DVDs, PS3 games AND Blu Ray movies. What do you think?

Answer
What you meant to ask was, should I buy an upscaling/upconverting DVD player to take some of the load off of the PS3.

Sure. You can get such a DVD player for as little as $45, such as the Sony 510H player from Amaz*n. We have the prior 500 model, and it works just fine. Don't forget the HDMI cable.

Dual Screen Portable dvd player?

Kassie O

Me and my family are moving across country and we are taking a car. We need a dual screen portable dvd player that can play 2 movies at once. It also needs to have headphone jacks. Does anyone know a an affordable candidate?

Answer
If you want to watch two movies at ones, you want two separate DVD players, preferably different brands so remotes do not conflict.

All portable DVD players have headphone jacks. Most also have an A/V connection which can be set for input or output, so both players you get can be linked to play the same movie on both screens.

How can I watch movies on android?

Answer
HOW TO WATCH MOVIES ON ANDROID

How to Covert DVD to Android
The following easy steps will guide you through how to convert a DVD format into an Android supported file.

Step 1: Download the DVD to Android converter on your PC/Laptop. Install and run it.
Step 2: Click the âAddâ button or from the menu list click âFileâ. Load the DVD from the DVD ROM or any folder, respectively.
Step 3: From the âFormatâ drop down list or âProfileâ in some cases, select the output format as âMPEG 4â. Now save this converted file in the âOutputâ drop down list.
Step 4: Begin to convert the DVD format to Android supported file by clicking on the âStartâ button. All tasks will be finished quickly providing the user with high quality output.
Now, you can transfer your favorite movies to your Android handset with the help of a cable. You can easily watch these movies with any Android media player available on the device.

Media Players

Below are the most popular Media Players that allow you to watch movies on Android phones.

RockPlayer is the holy grail of Android video players. This app virtually supports all the video formats. Itâs completely free for Android 1.6 and up users. The app comes in three versions and produces best results with fast processor devices.

Meridian Player is a great all in one media player for Android. It has a clean interface and it plays most of the audio/video files. Some advanced features of this player are movie subtitles, rating files, editing ID3 tags and controlling the app with gestures. The best part - itâs completely free.

Act 1 Video Player plays most of the audio and video files for Android. This app is very stable and it even supports Bluetooth media keys. This simple Media Player comes with a $1.50 price tag.

Video Player only supports MPEG-4 and 3 GPP encoded files. The unique feature of this free application is âresuming playbackâ, which most of the other Android media players lack.

Cinema is a simple and free of cost media player. The controls of this media player are unique. You control the functions of this application by tapping your fingers on the screen. It only supports H.264 and 3gp encoded files.

Like most applications, the performance of these media players may vary from handset to handset.

what is better as a dvd player xbox or playstation 2?

Q. actually the xbox dvd remote i can buy it now on ebay brand new for $5.30

Answer
Why PS2, why not PS3. It's a way better console, better games, and plays Blu-Ray movies. Ok it may be a little more expensive but it will be worth it in the end.
Between the end of this year and 2012 they will be switching of ALL tv channels for analog TV's and the only way you will get a signal is if you have a tv with a HD tuner.

www.parliament.uk/documents/upload/postpn264.pdf

this link is from the UK, but i've seen articles from the US and from where i live in Australia about Analog signals been turned of.

also DVD's and DVD players will cease to exist, Blu-Ray will do what dvd's did to tapes.

In the short run it's probably a lot to waste in your eyes.
But in the long run it's going to be your only option.
Until Xbox installs Blu-Ray players and buys shares from Sony over it.

Make my dvd player Region free?

I have a Sony dvp-sr200p dvd player bought from Walmart in February 2012. I have dvds that we ordered, and they turned out to be BBC, so I can not view them. I hate to purchase a new dvd player. I tried videohelp.com/dvdhacks, but none of the codes found there unlocked the region block. Please help. I have 3 more seasons coming in the mail this week, and would like to be able to view them when they arrive!

Answer
Try changing the region to 0 or 2. If you change it to 2, you will have to change it back to 1. Region 0 is all regions. Not all players can be changed either. You will also have a problem if the player does not change PAL to NTSC. If you use HDMI, then this is irrelevant.

Has blu ray taken over as the new movie player or dvd still the king?

mike b

??????

Answer
There is a noticeable difference between Blu-Ray and DVD in terms of quality, but Blu-Ray hasn't done very well since its release, DVD is dominating in sales. Anyway it's going to become obsolete technology by 2012, because Holo Disc is going to be released, and can pack as much as 20 Blu-Ray discs or 100 DVDs worth of data onto a single disc, and can hold 500 gigabytes of information.

Is there any point in buying an expensive DVD player?

zarreff

I bought my DVD player from walmart 4 years ago for 20 bucks and it still works perfectly. All DVD players play DVD's so why would any pay more than 20 bucks for one?

Another thing too; if anything happens to my DVD player well it was only 20 bucks...other people spend over 100 bucks on theres so if that goes out they gotta shell out more dough.

Answer
At this point, no.

It's more financially better to buy a Blu-Ray player as it plays both DVD and Blu-Ray and it can usually upscales the DVD's movies and shows or whatever.

Or if you are a gamer, you should buy a PS3 or an Xbox 360. It has the DVD capability that you might be interested in.

What portable dvd player should we buy?

We are going on a vacation this summer and since we will be in the car for a while we would like to get the kids dvd players. We did have the kind where there are 2 tvs and they attach to the headrest. They just don't work at all now. Not sure what happened to them. We were thinking about getting them each there own dvd player to hold now. Our girls are 2 and 5 though. Any suggestions on good kid friendly dvd players? I'm not really a huge fan of the fisher price kid dvd players. We also thought about just getting special covers for dvd players but I'm not sure where to find them.

If you were able to burn dvds with your dvd burner, it's also a dvd player. you should have the software to play the dvds from your dvd burner/player that's installed in your computer. When you properly burn them with your burner, it should play on both your computer's burner/player and your regular settop dvd player.

If you have a dvd player on your computer does it mean that you can burn dvds on it?

im trying to make a movie. and i just bought blank dvds. the prblem is that i dont know if the computer can burn it. it has a dvd player does it mean that it can burn dvds? or is there such a thing called a dvd burner you have to get for your computer. this maybe dumb but i need to know cuz i spent alot of money buying the blank dvds and i dont want to open it until i can figure this out..

Answer
A DVD player is not enough to be able to BURN DVDs. What is confusing is that they sell a so-called Combo drive, which as a DVD player and CD burner in one. So it can burn CDs, but not DVDs. It can only PLAY DVD movies or read data from a DVD.

You can get a decent DVD burner. Here are two that I recommend.

Answer
BUSH DVD PLAYER from Empire Stores
£23.99 Category: DVD Players

Bush DVD Player * Plays all DVD's and CD's * One Scart socket

So, if they can be bought at this sort of price from a catalogue - check somewhere like ASDA/CURRY'S - maybe even cheaper - just remember to buy one with a decent sized screen - no point buying one with less than a 12" screen .

I'll check-out the Spanish prices for you

Where can I find a case for portable dvd players to use in the car?

Mom of Thr

I don't want one that goes in between the seats as both of my kids have their own dvd play. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry meant to say they both have their own dvd players.

Answer
I don't have an answer specifically to your question - but I did want to mention - a 3lb DVD player, in a 20mph crash is like 60lbs of force crashing into your child's face. There have been many instances of people dying from head injury or internal bleeding due to a free laptop being projectiled into the air.

If you're set on having the DVD players in there, make sure they are installed in a way that they will not move in a crash, and also so they dont' interfere with any of the other passengers safety.

:) Safe travels.

car dvd players?????

are these worth it? what are some good brands?

Answer
I have an older model van and didn't want to put the expense into installing a DVD player in it permanently. We looked into portable DVD players but they seemed unstable and would mount lower than we wanted (most of them mounted in-between the front head rests so that people in the back seat would have a hard time seeing the screen) When we were getting ready to drive to Utah with small children we realized we needed something to keep them entertained. Then we found a dual screen portable DVD player and we love it. It is an RCA 7" 16:9 Portable DVD Player with Dual TFT-LCD Monitors. The two screens can be mounted separately and attach to headrests. (We put one on the front seat headrest and the second on the middle seat headrest) The screen is also the DVD player so there are only the two parts with a cable running between them. The nice thing about the one that we bought is that you can take it with you into a hotel room and it will play the DVD on a regular TV and it also comes with video games that can be played either while the second screen is watching a movie or displayed on a TV. (the video games aren't high graphics but are geared towards younger kids, although we had fun playing them too. Some of them are 80's knock-offs like frogger and centipede) The $200 was well worth the hours of quiet (non-fighting) travel time. Good luck!

DVD ripping. any help?

I have been looking for a way to rip some of my DVDs to my computer, but I can't seem to get anything to work. First I tried using VLC and I was able to get a decent video, but no audio. I'm not sure what I have to do to get audio (I played around with it for a while), so I gave up on that software.

I tried DVDFab HD after that. It worked. I have video and sound, but the videos come out jumpy and somewhat blocky. Like the frame rate is going 5 steps forward and 1 step back (if that makes sense). I have no idea how to fix this. Any advice with fixing either problems or any advice on a whole different software? Thanks.

P.S. I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit).

Windows 7 DVD Maker HELP!?

Alyssa F

Im making a Dvd, but I want to add extra features to it, is there a way to add an extra screen to this?

Answer
Windows 7 DVD Maker can be used to make a simple video DVD, but doesn't add the special dvd features, I think you can try some better software to make professional video DVD, like the real dvd in the store, you can try RZ DVD Creator, it provide many options for make professional video DVD, with it you can customzie the styles of dvd menu for for title, chapter, scene selection, etc, it can customize the dvd menu background videos, pictures, musics, text, etc, and can add any texts, buttons, etc on DVD menu, easy to personalize a professional DVD menu, and it can create 5.1 surround sound video DVD from any movies, it can convert any movies to video dvd with the customzied dvd menu, and burn to any dvd disc(DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc), and the burned video DVD can be played well on DVD player. You can yahoo or google search RZ DVD Creator and download it, easy to use, hope it can help you.

Can I connect my network DVD player to my computer?

Tyler

I have a collection of .iso movie files on my hard drive and was wondering if there is any way I could access them on my DVD player through some fancy networking magic. I have a virtual drive that I can mount them to and everything, but it would be nice to watch them on a bigger screen with surround sound. Any help?

Answer
If they are .iso movies you can burn them to plastic and watch them like regular movies on using the DVD player.

The flip side is playing the movies on the computer and connecting the HDMI port on your computer to a TV or projector.

Using a network is the most complicated way to achieve what you're asking.

Good Luck

My comp did not come with a dvd player to watch movies on it is windows xp. so is it posible to download one from the internet and then play movies or do i need to go and buy and have someone install a dvd player?on my comp, thanks, Roseanna

Answer
A DVD player is hardware so it would be kinda hard to download.

If your computer did not come with a DVD player it may not have a video card able to support one either. If you have a computer repair shop in your area, check them out. You can probably get a used one for the same price as the upgrade would cost you.

BCD3

Two different times I've downloaded DVD decoders but neighter has helped the problem. My CD player works just fine on my computer, but I can't understand why the DVD player won't work. My DVD slot says on the front of it DVD ROM. When I put the DVD in it just spins for a few minutes then nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to activate something on the computer to get the DVD to work? Please, help.
I have a DVD player in my computer.

Answer
DVD with a copyright protect always. So I think that is the problem.

Or your DVD player not support your DVD version.

I play my DVD on computer with my Windows Media Player. Just use Aimersoft DVD Ripper to converter my DVD to AVI format.

Once I get a new DVD, I can enjoy it anywhere as I want. such as my iPod, Zune, computer etc. So I recommend you get one. Or free try it first: http://www.aimersoft.com/dvd-ripper.html#161

Hope this may help you.

dvd player video quality?

JC

ok i bought a dvd player and i noticed u could use a hdmi cable on it ok so my question is what do hdmi cables do. do they improve the dvd quality or something?

Answer
What it usually means when a DVD player has an HDMI connection is that it has the ability to upscale DVDs to play on an HDTV monitor. This sometimes, but not always, improves the image quality of DVDs a little bit, but your HDTV also has an upscaling chip in it, which it will use by default. Sometimes the upscaler in the HDTV is better than the one in your DVD player, so try it both ways and see which looks best.

HDMI also offers the added convenience of carrying audio from your DVD player as well as video, so you will only need the one cable instead of two.

Windows Media Player video help?

Insane Spo

I have been trying to play an old home made video on my new laptop (this video has played on other computers before) but won't play on this one because it said something about it being an unsupported file type. It's a .dvd file. Is there some sort of download I could get for Windows Media Player to get this DVD to work?

Answer
You probably miss the DVD codec which is .Vob and .TS. You have two solutions: either you update and make sure to check mark all codecs boxes, or you get a free alternative for it. I have found KMP and VLC to be very reliable. Some other useful codecs are Mpeg (1, 2 or 3).

1) Codecs pack (9.59MB): http://www.filehippo.com/download_codec_pack/download/32e47ccb9db1905814e3a137e939ce6e/
If you have Windows 7 here sre the right codecs (26.47MB): http://www.filehippo.com/download_windows_7_codecs/download/8089c345f6aa8529b402d330a0e6a0c2/
Windows Vista codecs ( 21.96MB): http://www.filehippo.com/download_vista_codec_package/download/b9fb27f0fdabbe49a255b047acc061ee/
2) Windows Media Player 11: (24.56MB) http://www.filehippo.com/download_windows_media_player/download/216e667f9ad91a0e45ae2383a3beed1d/

Free DVD Burner for my windows 7 pc?

nathan a

My pc only came with Windows DVD Burner, and i don't like it very much. Sometimes my dvd's come out with no sound, while others come out perfectly fine. It takes nearly an hour to burn just one DVD, and it only accepts certain formats, which doesn't allow me to burn most of what i want. Are there any good, FREE dvd burning programs i can download to use? Ones that are easy to use and reliable?

Answer
Try DVD Flick.

The best and most reliable DVD burning tool that I've ever used is a tool called DVD Creator. It's able to burn all kinds of videos to DVD disc. After that, you can view the DVD on DVD player. It also lets you edit videos and create DVD menus. Easy to use and professional.

You should really give it a try. You may check out at:

Best of luck.

how do u transfer vcr tapes on to dvd player with a dvd recorder/or vcrdvd combo?

stumesa

i have a dvd recorder that i can transfer vcr tapes to my dvd player, how do i do that?

Answer
All you have to do is VCR outputs (composite/Yellow and audio/red & white jacks) to the corresponding inputs on the recorder. Hit play,VHS...hit record, dvd recorder and you're done. Stop the DVD recorder and put in new blank dics. Repeat as necessary.

Many dvd recorders allow you to make a basic main menu if you want to break up the dvd into accessible parts. Also be aware that you can get more onto a DVD by varying the record mode on your recorder. But, more on a disc means lower quality. You should also make sure you buy the right blank discs for your brand of recorder. Most handle DVD-Rs but a few brands use DVD+Rs. Check your manual. The patch cables for dubbing can be purchased at your local Radio Shack...you'll need "RCA to RCA".

hope that helps!!!

I just got a blu ray dvd player for my hdtv, I've been using a dvd/vcr combo to connect to the cable ?

I would change channels through the vcr. How do I set up my new blu ray dvd player to get cable?

Answer
If you're using the DVD/VCR to change channels, leave it connected to your TV. Instead, connect the blu-ray player to your HDTV with a HDMI cable. You want to use a HDMI cable because it's the only way to get the full HD quality picture out of your blu-ray player.

The blu-ray player does not have a TV tuner in it, so it can't be used with your cable service at all.

If your TV doesn't have enough HDMI ports, you can either swap your DVD/VCR to using component video cables, or get a HDMI switch.

Using component video for the DVD/VCR is OK even for HDTV because most channels are in 720p, which is handled fine by component video cables. However, blu-ray movies are in 1080p, which can only be carried by a HDMI cable.
