Is there any point in buying an expensive DVD player?

zarreff

I bought my DVD player from walmart 4 years ago for 20 bucks and it still works perfectly. All DVD players play DVD's so why would any pay more than 20 bucks for one?

Another thing too; if anything happens to my DVD player well it was only 20 bucks...other people spend over 100 bucks on theres so if that goes out they gotta shell out more dough.

Answer
At this point, no.

It's more financially better to buy a Blu-Ray player as it plays both DVD and Blu-Ray and it can usually upscales the DVD's movies and shows or whatever.

Or if you are a gamer, you should buy a PS3 or an Xbox 360. It has the DVD capability that you might be interested in.

What portable dvd player should we buy?

Jess

We are going on a vacation this summer and since we will be in the car for a while we would like to get the kids dvd players. We did have the kind where there are 2 tvs and they attach to the headrest. They just don't work at all now. Not sure what happened to them. We were thinking about getting them each there own dvd player to hold now. Our girls are 2 and 5 though. Any suggestions on good kid friendly dvd players? I'm not really a huge fan of the fisher price kid dvd players. We also thought about just getting special covers for dvd players but I'm not sure where to find them.

I have a DVD player w/ HDMI hookup, is it worth buying a Blu Ray player?

DZ

I have a panasonic 5 disc surround system dvd player that i use an HDMI cable to plug it in to my 720p LG plasma, i sit about 5 feet or so away from my TV. I really want to buy Ironman when it comes on DVD and feel like i may as well buy blu ray player because its the next big thing. Do you think the Blu Ray player would be a bigger difference than my HDMI cable dvd player.

Answer
If your display device was a 1080p device, my answer might be different, but since you're going to have to set up the Blu-Ray player to down-rez to 720p anyway, so you're definitely losing some value there.

But even if you had a native 1080p display device, here are some things to think about...

1. Many people who have seen a comparison of a Blu-Ray image side-by-side with a standard def DVD up-rezzed by a high quality player (Oppo being the standard bearer) don't feel the difference is significant. (Noticeable, yes, but certainly not dramatic.)

It's not that Blu-Ray is inferior in any way - it's that the original DVD format is _that_ good.

2. Consider your existing DVD library and your wish list of movies you don't yet have. How many (standard def) DVDs could you buy with the $400 you would spend on that Blu-Ray player? Then, from there, for every BD disc you buy, you could buy 2, sometimes even 3 DVDs.

Is Blu-Ray the new standard? Certainly. Will videophiles everywhere be replacing every DVD they own with Blu-Ray discs? Probably. Eventually.

My advice would be to (A) wait for prices to come down, and (B) wait until you have native 1080p device (get a projector!) to watch them on.

All that said, some (if not most) Blu-Ray discs also contain a 480p version of the movie on the same disc or in the same case. If you can live with the current price tag for BDs, start buying them now. Then, when your collection warrants it, and STB prices have come down, you could buy the set-top box.

Hi which Toshiba HD-DVD player should I buy for my "50" Hitachi HDTV/LCD & it is 1080i resolution?

GAMER VET

Hi I want to buy Toshiba HD-DVD player. Since my HDTV it is 1080i resolution & I am looking for cost less then $220.

Thank you!
Please don't tell me to buy the blu-ray instead! I choose HD-DVD & everyone has different taste. I also don't care of the format war either! The format war will be over in the next 9 yrs.

Answer
HD DVD is the better choice for HD disks ... more capable player and stable/final specification. I've also read that HD DVD players are better upscaling DVD players for when you want to watch DVDs. Ignore all the brainwashed blu-ray fans!

That said you really only have one choice if you want the Toshiba name on it ... the HD-A3 (and since you only have a 1080i HDTV it's all you need.

However, there is another option -- the Venturer SHD7000 -- $198 at Walmart. In reality it is a rebranded HD-A3 so it's really a Toshiba. The only consideration is the "free" disk offer. As I understand it the real Toshiba qualifies for more movies, so the price difference (based on what price you can find the HD-A3 at) may be the deciding factor. Your choice. Is a up converting DVD player worth buying, does it work good with a HDTV?

Q. Is a up converting DVD player worth buying, does it work good with a HDTV?

Answer
Upconverting DVD players (or blu-ray players for that matter) are only worthwhile if you have a HDTV. They will do nothing to enhance your image on a regular TV.

Since blu-ray players will also upconvert DVDs on HDTVs, the only reason to buy just an upconverting DVD player instead of a blu-ray player is the fact that upconverting DVD players are under $50 whereas blu-ray players are about $150.

what voltage converter can i use for the portable dvd player bought in USA to be taken to India?

It is just aportable DVD player I bought in US and I need a voltage converter so my DVD player will not get damaged when I use in India.
The last time I took a pictureof a waterfall, it took 3 seconds for the picture to get damaged. I need to protect my DVD player from being fried.

Answer
Use a step-down transformer.

It should be rate for at least twice as much current
(or twice as many watts)
as the total load that it will be required to supply.

For a portable DVD player, a 50 or 100 watt transformer
should be more than sufficient, but you may think of
other things you would also want to use,
so you may still have a good reason to buy a larger one.

Considering the cost of these things, the best idea is
to buy the largest transformer you can afford (and carry around).

We are going on a 12 hour (one way)road trip with our children and I need to by them a DVD player. We bought one a couple of years ago and it was junk.
What is it I need to look for when comparing the lower priced models?
Also do any of them allow you to play video games?
Thanks.

Answer
The lower price models are junk -- that's why it failed. Get a name brand like Panasonic or Sony. Make sure it has input plugs to hook up a Playstation or whatever (you'll need to get the right cord for that).

Sam's Club, Costco, or Overstock.com will give you the better players at the best price.

How come I can't see the closed caption on the dvd player?

hot dude

even though the dvd has cc on it, but i can't see the closed caption on tv? how come?

i have a coby dvd player. i bought it for about 25 dollars, i think.
oh, yes, i have set both dvd player and tv for cc, but nothing shows.

I am thinking that maybe it is due to the low quality of the dvd player.

Answer
You probably need to go into the setup in your DVD player or on the DVD itself. When I want the closed captions this is what I have to do. Look under extras or setup.

What type of format does my dvd player need to accept?

Momin2005

I need a new dvd player. However, before I buy one I need to be sure that it will play the mini dvd's that my camcorder makes. What format do I have to look for on the specs?

Answer
i think almost any dvd players of today are able to play mini dvds. try checking your pc dvd drive for example, do you see a small circular spot in the middle of the disc tray? if you can find that in a disc tray of a regular dvd player, that means it can play mini dvds. your camcorder formats a recorded video to play on a dvd player, so it should be ok.

If the peso depreciates relative to the Japanese yen, will the Sony DVD player you wanted become more or less expensive? What effect will this have on the number of Sony DVD players that Filipinos buy?

Answer
If the Peso depreciates against the Yen I doubt it will have any effect at all.
People here that can afford to buy name brand appliances are not going to stop buying quality name brands just because the cost goes up. Besides with all the existing stock it would take quite awhile to have any effect on the prices at all.

can you please tell me some car in-dash dvd players that play while driving?

C R

i dont know anything about car systems or car dvd player ... buying it for a christmas present - just want some generel knowledge on the item and what are some good brands? pioneer? alpine? thanks so much!

Answer
No car dvd players will come from the factory able to play while the car is in motion. There are ways to bypass that safety feature. I am a huge fan of Pioneer in general. I've never had an in dash dvd player but I have had the pioneer headunit i have now for five years and its still going strong. I don't know much about alpine. I think the Kenwood dvd players look cool. They are a bit more expensive though.

Can I buy a portable DVD player adapter separate?

Q. I have a Digital Labs DVD player. I use it a TON. But the adapter is ripping, and the whole thing is probably going to rip anytime soon. Can I buy a new adapter, not including the DVD player (buying the adapter separate)? I've had my DVD player for about a year now, and I have used it ever since.

Answer
Go to the manufacturer's website and see if you can order one. Otherwise, if you know the voltage required and size of the plug, you may be able to get a universal adapter at an electronics store.
