Can I have some help and advice to buy a DVD player?

At the moment I'm playing my DVDs on my Playstation 2 on my 32" LCD HD. And I was planning on buying a normal DVD player. So will there be any difference between the quality of the DVD player and my Playstation 2?

What do you think I should do, keep using my Playstation 2 or buy a new DVD player?

Answer
Actually PS2's have some of the worst video processing for DVD's that I've ever seen (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_1/dvd-benchmark-sony-ps2-dvd-player-3-2001.html)
and makes all DVD's look as if they were recorded at lower resolution. Do yourself a favor and if your TV is equipped with HDMI inputs, buy an upconverting DVD player for under $100, you won't be disappointed in the difference. Or if you're looking to get into the whole HD-DVD/Blu-Ray thing, you can find HD-DVD players on the market for $200 or less (I just found a first generation top of the line Toshiba HD-DVD player at a pawn shop for $199!) and they'll play all your standard DVD's as well as the newer HD disc format (based on whichever type of player you choose.)

At any rate, you're wasting your time using your PS2 as a DVD player, it's universally agreed to be one of the worst all around DVD players in the industry!

Hope this helps!

What are things to look for when buying a DVD player?

Brian

It seems like all DVD players are virtually the same, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me what are the distinguishing differences.

What are differing qualities to look for when buying a DVD player? Why choose one over another?

Answer
Most manufacturer have stopped producing stand alone DVD players, due to the new blu ray disc player will also play the DVD. What you want to look for is quality and dependability of the brand. Pioneer and Panasonic are the top brand for quality and dependability. My first DVD player when it first came out was a Sony, model 7000 and 7700 which cost me over $1,100 but they did not last more than 3 years. My Pioneer Elite DVD player is now over 20 years old and still running strong. My Panasonic blu ray disc player the first generation model BD-10 which is 4 years old has had no problem playing over 300 movies. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Go online to home theater magazine and read the reviews on players. Panasonic has had a player each year being recommended as one of the best entry level. Hope this will help you out.

I have to travel from Texas back home to the New Zealand. I plan to take a portable dvd player to watch movies. Any suggestions on great movies that I should take along? I like it all so there is no specific with regard to gendre. Please list the name and what it is about and why you like/recommend it. Thanks friends.
Uh, Ms. Twighlight Zone, Twighlight is not out on DVD yet, love. I'm referring to DVDs to rent.
Bro, now THAT is what I'm talking about. Thank you. That will be on my list to take with me. Long flight and I will need many dvds to pass the time on the plane.
Valet, old friend, I will be hitting on them but they are not always the FRIENDLY skies... some fat bloke will c))k block me for sure.
I've seen that flick. About the coke bottle, right? Loved it.

Answer
The Little Mermaid. It's such a classic and always makes me cry when I watch it. I can really relate to Ariel also. I know it's more of a kid's movie, but I love it!!!

:)

What to pack for a first time airplane flight with my kids?

Cali_mom_o

We are traveling across country. kids range in age from early grade school to middle school. Any suggestions to make our first plane ride memorable and entertaining?

Answer
If you can manage to avoid making the trip memorable for your fellow passangers, it is already a great deal. Kids are bored on planes, food is yucky to most of them, and sitting is paralizing, in particular for kids of the age you mentions. Plane rides of more than 4 hours long are just a pain.

If your kids like to read, that's great, take books. Otherwise, PSPs, Nintendos, anything that will help them while away boring time. Don't count too much on movies on board, they aren't that good, and from back seats most of the time you get only a glimpse... If you have a DVD player, take it along, with a couple of decent new DVD (its worth the investment). Warn ahead the big kids that slipping and mis-behaviour will not be tolerated - boys are sometimes trickier, because they love jumping around and are used to more sports during the day, immobility is very taxing.

Have a great vacation!!!

I was setting up my Sony DVD player to my 1080p HDTV, so when I turned it on, I tried to watch Spider-man 3, but it was playing in black and white. Please help me!

Answer
You have it hooked up wrong and you interestingly said absolutely nothing about how you have it connected.

How Do You Hook Up an Old DVD Player to a new HDTV?

lordstryfe

I have an Toshiba 42" 1080p LCD HDTV REGZA, cable box and a DVD Player. I can't figure out how to hook up my DVD player to either my TV. My cable cords use the same cords slots as my DVD player.

Answer
Since you said your DVD player is old, I assume it does not have an HDMI output. If it had component video (Red, Green, Blue) then you need a component cable and you can connect it to the HDTV. You still need red and white audio (composite) to get the audio to your TV. If you do not have component output, then your only bet is composite (yellow for video, red and white for audio). HDTVs are intelligent enough to recognize all the inputs you plug into them.

The second link is apparently is the 'next years release' version of the previous one. The first one is well reviewed where as the second doesnt have as many but being the new version of the first one it should be as good/better? Just wondering whether its worth paying the extra £13 on top of the wireless adapter.
@Hunny : It's not the fact of money, its pointless me paying the extra £13 if theres no difference between the two models!

Answer
I would not purchase a Sony product. I never had a Sony product that have lasted me more than 3 years. When DVD first came out I purchase a Sony DVD player model 7000 and the following year the 7700 both cost me over $1,100 each. The first HDTV in the market by Sony, a 34" CRT HDTV for a price of $6,400. If you read yahoo questions you will find many Sony items with issue. My first Blu Ray disc player is by Panasonic, model BD-10. It is over 4 years old and played over 300 Blu Ray disc movies without one issue. When AVATAR came out many player had an issue playing the movie including Sony. My Panasonic had no issue at all. Hope this will help you out.

Can you connect a computer to a dvd player then to a projector?

diana c

Well I have a problem with my hdmi connector in my projector, so my projector won't connect to my computer, and I check if the cable was the problem, but I am able to connect my computer to my TV with the hdmi cable, so it is not the cable. So I am wondering if I can connect my dvd player to my computer somehow, then connect my dvd player to my projector with an rca cable or some cable? Is this possible will it display?
-Thank You :)))
Well actually, the projector work with my computer before but now it just stop working it it? So I don't know what happen?

Answer
If I understand you correctly, I believe you are running into HDCP. HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is an anti-copying protocol implemented in HDMI (among others) that requires all devices connected to it to be HDCP-compliant. See here for more info than you wanted to know:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-bandwidth_Digital_Content_Protection

TVs with HDMI connections are HDCP compliant and so is your computer, but it seems your projector is not (probably a little older, no?). So even if you could run a DVD player into your computer (we'll get to that in a moment) you would still have the same problem. The problems are:
1. Your computer's HDMI is most likely Output only (there are some machines with HDMI input but they have HDCP issues also). So you can't connect the DVD player to it and see its output - unless you have a Video (and audio) capture card (if it's a desktop) or USB capture device (if a laptop, or a desktop).
2. I am confused why you would connect your DVD player to the computer AND to the projector (unless you mean connect the DVD to the computer and from the computer to the projector, which still wouldn't work, even with RCA connections - your computer doesn't have these anyway, does it?).
3. Your best bet, if it's what you want to do, is just connect the DVD player straight to the projector (if the DVD player has the Yellow/Re/White A/V connections).
Does this make sense? Write back with additional details if I have misunderstood or you have more Qs...

Answer
the biggest will be in the 12' widescreen but I'm a fan of the 10.2' because it's a perfect size to carry around with you but still give you the best picture. The 8.5' is a good value as well... I'll give you a couple links to check out below for cheap but very good portable dvd players. Good luck.

I plan to build a gaming pc for the first time, and im all set with what components I am going to buy and how im going to put it together, but what do I do once its assembled and plugged in. Do i put in the operating system first, or install the drivers? Is there a certain order I have to install things? Also, do I have to do anything with the Bios if i just plan to leave everything at stock speeds for a while?

Answer
>You have to install the OS first.

To do this, go into BIOS and set your CD/DVD drive to first boot device. Stick your OS disk into the ROM drive, SAVE the change in BIOS, reboot and it will launch into the OS installer. You may need your driver disks during installation, just follow the installer and do what it says.

After your OS is up and running, the first thing to do is DISCONNECT from the internet. THen, with your security software, install antivirus and firewall. This is the first thing you have to do to prevent being infected with malware of virus'. Install antimalware as well. Superantispyware and Malwarebytes are two free programs you can install right away. Download and burn these to a disk first and then have that disk available to install the security software right away. Don't remain connected to the net until you install security software first.

After doing this, reconnect to the net. Install your drivers from the motherboard disk. Download all updates from Microsoft by running Windows Update.

CHeck the motherboard manufacturer site and see if there are any updated drivers or files to update the operating system with (but do not flash the motherboard BIOS! You don't need to do this unless there is a specific hardware reason to do so).

Go to Oracle on line and download the latest Java Engine
Go to Adobe and download Shockwave player

Depending on your OS disk, you may need to upgrade to Internet Explorer 9

You should check the DirectX site on Microsoft and download any updates to DirectX

Make sure that you ACTIVATE WINDOWS if you have not done so.

Finally -

I would invest immediately in an external hard disk and buy backup software. The one I use is Acronis True Image 2011, you can buy it on line for $49.99. Before you install anything else, back up your new installation with a hard disk image backup of the basic system using Acronis. Put these disks in a safe place where they cannot be lost so you can reinstall the basic system. There are tons of people here who REGRET THE FACT they never took the time, effort or money to back their systems up.

In lieu of this, consider a cloud computing backup on line.

What is a good gaming laptops to get?

Angel

I know ASUS and Alienware are supposed to be good, but lately Ive been hearing Alienware is not that great anymore and ASUS certain parts break down pretty fast and their customer service is bad. Are there any good ASUS or Alienwares out now? in the 1,500-1,600 or less range.

Can some people name some good gaming laptops as well as brands, I keep coming across some but then they'll be some sort of error with them.

Memory 8 GB or more with ability to upgrade
Hard drive 750 GB or more
CPU i7 3r d gen.
Graphics Card 2-3 GB or more
Windows
Display 15-17 inch etc.

Although i want a gaming computer i wont be gaming on it much, I just want a gaming computer because they tend to have more memory, and hard drive space etc.

thanks
Thank you both..Alex i had checked that laptop out and i read reviews about freezing and touch pad issues...have you experienced any issues with that? and what yr is your ASUS? are there any others you would recommend?
Also anymore suggestions are appreciated thanks

Answer
The most important factor of a gaming laptop is the graphics processor. The stronger the graphics, the better the gaming unless particularly slowed by the CPU or a ram shortage or other factors.
Video editing needs a lot of ram and a faster CPU. Stronger CPUs and graphics power take more battery power, so if they still have a standard 6 cell lithium ion, a faster laptop has a shorter battery life.
Weight is also a factor in the portability, and many people are more interested in the portability. You get a much more powerful desktop PC with a bigger monitor at the same price as a gaming laptop.
For brand quality and reliability in general, I use the customer survey published annually by PC World magazine. December 2011 is the latest, with this year due out soon.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
Although Macbooks are known as more reliable, their price to performance is terrible. They cost a lot for the CPU and graphics performance level, and the OSX operating system has a smaller list of compatible software. Also, Lenovo has 3 product lines; Essential, Ideapad, and Thinkpad. Thinkpads are considered the most robust and best keyboards and have other excellent characteristics, but they do not get high level graphics because they are business systems.

Most laptops have 2 slots for DRAM. 8GB laptops are generally 2x4GB, and that is usually plenty. The graphics ram is more important to be GDDR5 instead of DDR3 type rather than how much ram. The graphics level is important, but the ram can be shared system ram as DDR3 and so having 2 GB dedicated graphics ram is only really good if it is GDDR5 ram. In DDR3, just add it to the system ram.
You can see a reported CPU and graphics score average at this site on two tabs:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

One of the bargains in the industry is the Lenovo Y580 at Lenovo.com, but shipments are now delayed and prices were increased. They were perfect during black friday sale with $900 price on what is now $1,039.20. There are a few left at resellers.
3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB GDDR5, backlit keyboard, 15.6" screen in 1080p, 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz, 1TB 5400RPM+16G SSD, Blu-ray/DVD-RW, 6 Cell Li-Polymer, 2x2 wireless, bluetooth, HD CAM, HDMI, and a good set of extra features like one button recovery. You would have to wait for delivery. The only thing some people don't like is the screen has glare of overhead or lights behind you, but it has an extra wide color gamat with more accurate reproduction. In stock at Newegg for $1110 is DVDRW instead of bluray and a 750GB with 16GB acceleration SSD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834310661

The only manufacturers of laptops selling under their own name is Asus and MSI. Laptops are designed and produced by them and Clevo, Wistron, Quanta, Invertec, and a few other manufacturers all in China. The brands are actually just sales and service and procurement organizations doing selection of keyboards, HDDs, LCDs, and other sub-components made by other companies. Lenovo Thinkpad still has design teams some formerly of IBM and a lab for reliability testing in Japan.

At $1210 is an MSI with similar specs to the Lenovo Y580, but in a 17.3" anti-reflective screen, no SSD, and is DVDRW:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152369
You can see gaming performance here:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
If not gaming heavily, there would be no need to spend more as it is mostly only moving up the graphics power. Extra ram over 8+2GB is not very important.
I show the full HD 1920x1080 resolution since you are at the price point to get it.

This is a nice choice at Amazon of a Samsung:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Series-NP700G7C-T01US-17-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0098O6FIU
It's only flaw is bluray and DVD player, but does not show DVD writing. It may have it, but does not state it so probably does not. The color is yellow/orange. The screen is a 17.3" extra bright 400 nit. The HD 7870M is a little better than NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M. It has a 1TB HDD. The Samsung brand is a high quality one. It is heavy at 8.4 pounds.

You can browse around, but if you like the color (see it at various sites for sale by google of the model number), and don't miss DVD writing (you can buy an external one), the Samsung is an excellent choice. Just browse around Newegg by looking at laptops sorted by price at 100 per page, and then select at left the i7, and slidebar for 1920x1080, and parameters of GB of ram and HDD. You can also check Amazon, but they are harder to search.

With the article about quality, a site that shows reported CPU and graphics power and another with gaming by GPU and the places to buy being Newegg, Amazon, Tigerdirect, BHPhoto.com
it is just a matter of deciding what suits you.

Can dvds brought from India work on the dvd players in USA?

best dvd players in india on Get the Best DVD Player NOW! | PRLog
best dvd players in india image

Ms. K

If i buy dvds from india can they still play on my american dvd player here?

Answer
No. DVDs are made to work in different parts of the world. The US is region 1 where as India is region 5. You DVD player is a region 1 so it can only play region 1 discs.

There is one way to get around it though. In several on-line forums you can learn hacks that you can do to your player to make it region free. Then you can play it on your player.

Also a computers region code can be changed to play multi-region discs. Be careful though. The region on your computer can only be changed 5 times. So choose wisely.

Where should I go for an engineering school?

Jake

So the other day I was a at a friends house and we were playing my madden 13 on his PS3, when we unplugged it to take it to the living room to play, and when we tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't work, it's basically done for. My problem was that my game was still in the system and it wouldn't eject. So I went out to their shed and got some screwdrivers and took the whole thing apart screw by screw and piece by piece. With the help of YouTube of course, I figured out how to manually eject my disc out of the DVD player. Then, I put the whole thing back together and everything was fine. Except for the fact that it was already broken. But anyways, for some reason I had fun unscrewing everything and taking stuff apart and putting it back together. It was the first time I had ever done something like that. I really enjoyed it. I'm a freshman in highschool and next year I'm planning on taking business classes. But, now I kind of want to change my mind and take a class for engineering. If that is what you're suppose to take. But anyway, if I enjoy taking those classes then I want to go to a big engineering school. I know Georgia Tech is one of the best, but does anyone know what classes I should take and what schools I should consider looking at?

Answer
Here are the 2013 rankings for the top 25 engineering schools in the U.S.....and their costs. Look carefully at the costs! Some are simply astronomical and you might need a scholarship. Others are more reasonable. You can look up individual institutions on the internet.
If you see a few that are close to where you live or in an area you'd in which you'd like to live/work get in touch w/ their admissions person and ask what courses you should take in high school. The somewhat extraneous looking number is the number of engineering students currently enrolled.

Do Netflix movies lose their quality when streamed from the computer to the TV (by cord)?

best dvd player streaming netflix on ROKU LT STREAMING PLAYER + NETFLIX BUTTON 350 channels, Netflix, Hulu ...
best dvd player streaming netflix image

yecalrae

I have a blu ray dvd player that does not stream Netflix unfortunately, so I am looking for another solution rather than just going out to buy another bluray disc player. The AT&T installation tech mentioned that I could buy a cord from the Apple store and connect it from my 27" iMac to my HDTV. Will the quality be the same? Will it be full HD? Thanks.

Answer
Computer is more intelligent & powerful than Blu-ray with streaming facility. Only thing is it should have HDMI Port. Then get HDMI cable and see everything on your HD TV with HD quality if your video is in HD.

What is my best option for viewing web content on my tv?

John

My needs are very simple. I already have a dvd player with network capabilities to stream netflix and other services. What I want it is to watch videos exclusive to specific websites on my tv. For example Biography.com has full epsiodes that are exclusive to the website and can't be found on netflix or youtube. How do I get that on my tv?

I've considered buying a laptop and connecting it to my tv, but that seems kind of pricey and I don't really need a laptop at the moment nor do I want to run a long cable from my desktop to my tv. Is there another option?

Answer
Best is a PC. You can get an SFF PC for a couple hundred that will do just that.

Best way to stream Netflix thru my LG Blue Ray DVD player?

best dvd players with streaming on ... Best Modes Of Paving Highways ...: Pa.) Franklin Institute
best dvd players with streaming image

Curious In

I have an LG Blue Ray DVD player capable of streaming my Netflix from the PC. What is the best way to do this? Should I get a wireless router to send the signal to the DVD player? Does it cost more than my actual monthly subscription? Serious answers please...thanks!

Answer
Well, you should get a router regardless. It's the easiest way to share your internet connection between multiple devices. Using a router does not add to your internet fees.

Your LG blu-ray player can stream directly from Netflix - a PC is not required (other than to set up the account.) All Netflix subscriptions include unlimited streaming so if you already have a Netflix account you're all set there.

As for connecting the blu-ray player to the router, if it supports wireless, go ahead and use that. It'll be easier than having to run an ethernet cable from the player to your router.

Keep in mind that streaming movies is like downloading a very large file. If your ISP has monthly limitations on how much data you can download, use of Netflix streaming may cause you to go over. An average 90 minute movie will use between 1 to 3 GB of data.

Can I connect a Roku to my old TV through my old DVD player?

Touscents

This is mainly for Netflix streaming. I am not tech-savie. The TV is not in the same room as the computer, but I am thinking my wireless router means that I do not have to physically connect the Roku to the router. Would a Blue Ray DVD player that can stream Netflix be a better choice for me than a Roku?

Answer
The roku box does a lot more than you think so check them out before you buy. http://www.roku.com
A blu ray that connects to the internet will give you Netflix and maybe 3 other apps. Look at what you get before you buy. Each brand gives you some different apps. However, you will be able to play your old dvds in the blu ray and have a better picture.
One thing of caution, in order to go wireless, some blu rays require a wireless lan adapter that can add $70 to the cost. Sony has a built in antenna.
Also, your speed is crucial to getting good results with Netflix. The higher the better but it has to be above 2 mbps. The further your modem is away from the blu ray the more your wireless signal can drop and it's subject to interference from cell phones, cordless phones and any wireless device.

I have the same since 6 months and it still operates wonderfully. I bought it after reading some reviews on the web.

Enjoy your purchase !

Can you hook up independent, portable dvd players to show one movie on both?

average ja

Looked at getting a dual screen set, but we already have a decent single so thought we would just get another single. Mine has both an AV input and AV output plugs. If I buy a connector cable, will I be able to play one movie for both to view? I'm putting this here in hopes that that other parents may have already tried this for road trips...

Answer
I tried this with mine and could not do it. But go talk to someone at Best Buy or Radio Shack and they can tell you.

Favorite tv shows are from australia and wont play on US dvd player what to do?

best dvd players australia image
Q. i have a couple of my favorite tvs i wanna buy on dvd but its says they arent compatible with US dvd players. the dvds are from australia. what do i need to do. should i buy a different dvd player or is there a way around that?

Answer
The first problem you're facing is that a US DVD player and an Australian DVD have different region codes. The US is region code 1 and Australia is region code 4.
Australia uses PAL as it's television standard and the US uses NTSC (old analog format) or ATSC (new digital format). Your DVD player may be able to handle either format. Check the user manual to see what it says about this.
You need to make sure you deal with both issues. Surprisingly, the cheaper DVD players often don't care about region. They say they do but in actuality they don't care. I'd guess that it's the region issue that's stopping you. Check the links below to see if you can change the region code on your player and go from there.

If I buy a multi-region DVD player in Australia can I watch region 1 DVDs on it?

Q. Australia is region 4, USA and Canada are region 1, I want to buy some TV series on DVD which are 10x cheaper in region 1 format, if I spend $30 on a multi-region DVD player will I be able to watch region 1 DVDs on it? I assume it should work since it's called a multi-region DVD player but I can totally imagine that after I buy one I'll find out it doesn't bloody work or something.

Answer
More than likely such a player will ignore region altogether, and convert the video format on the disc to your TV format.

The only real issue is getting US based DVD vendors to ship to Australia at all.

HD DVD Player or Blu Ray DVD player better or the difference?

What is the difference between the two? Currently I have a Toshiba HDTV 1080 P DVD player. If I buy the blu ray DVD player, will it play my regular DVDs better than my DVD player now?

Answer
- Blu-ray discs are better quality than HD-DVD discs by a little. = No point in going with HD-DVD discs because they are not popular (it lost the format war against Blu-ray).
- Blu-ray discs are better quality than DVD discs by a lot.
- Blu-ray player can play both Blu-ray and DVD and CD discs (not sure about HD-DVD discs) = The Blu-ray player may have built in upscaling and picture enhancement settings too (for DVD discs).
- There is plenty of ways to get cheap Blu-ray movies/discs. = Example: Best buy usually has them at $3.99 or $5.99 or $7.99 or $9.99 (may come with a DVD digital copy or other features.ect) (best buy also has this option once in a while, you can get $5.00 off on Blu-ray movies for every DVD movie you give them). 3D Blu-ray movies are not that popular (not that many of them), but they cost around $20.

- DVD or Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc (DVD or DVD-Video): = Video Specifications: Codec is H.262/MPEG-2 Part 2, Resolution is up to NTSC 720x480 (345,600 pixels at 8 bits per color, 3:2 aspect ratio, 29.97p frames per second) OR Resolution is up to PAL/SECAM 720x576 (414,720 pixels at 8 bits per color, 5:4 aspect ratio, 25p frames per second), constant bitrates of 9.8 Mbps. OR It's capable of China Video Disc or Video Compact Disc. = Audio Specifications: Formats are PCM (at 6,144 kbps bitrate) or DTS (at 1,536/1,509 kbps or 768/754.5 kbps or 512 kbps constant bitrates) or Dolby Digital (at 448 kbps constant bitrate) or MP2 (at 384/160 kbps constant bitrate), up to 5.1 surround sound (or PCM at 7.1/16 bit/48 khz or DTS-ES Discrete extension at 6.1/16 bit/48 khz) and up to 24 bit depth and up to 48,000 hz sample rate (or PCM at 5.1/24 bit/96 khz or DTS 5.1/24 bit/96 khz extension), all formats support 2.0/24 bit/192 khz. = Capacity is 1.46 GB to 17.08 GB (4.7 GB SS-SL or 8.54 GB SS-DL being common capacity).
- High Definition DVD (HD-DVD): = Video Specifications: Codec is H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (or VC-1 or H.262/MPEG-2 Part 2), Resolution is up to 1920x1080 (2,073,600 pixels at 8 bits per color, 16:9 aspect ratio, 24/25/30p or 50/60i frames per second), variable bitrates of 29.4 Mbps. = Audio Specifications: Formats are PCM (at kbps bitrate) or DTS-HD-MA (at 18 Mbps variable bitrate) or Dolby TrueHD (at 18 Mbps variable bitrate) or DTS-HD-HR (at 3.0 Mbps constant bitrate) or Dolby Digital Plus (at 3.0 Mbps constant bitrate) or DTS (at 1,536/1,509 kbps constant bitrates) or Dolby Digital (at 512/504 kbps constant bitrate) or MP2 (at 384/160 kbps bitrate), up to 5.1 surround sound (or PCM at 7.1/24 bit/96 khz or DTS-ES Discrete extension at 6.1/16 bit/48 khz) and up to 24 bit depth and up to 48,000 hz sample rate (or PCM at 7.1/24 bit/96 khz or PCM at 5.1/24 bit/192 khz or DTS 5.1/24 bit/96 khz extension), all formats support 2.0/24 bit/192 khz. = Capacity is 15 GB to 60 GB (15 GB SS-SL or 30 GB DS-SL being common capcaity).

- Blu-ray Disc (BD or BR-D or B-R-D): = Video Specifications: = Video Specifications: Codec is H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (or VC-1 or H.262/MPEG-2 Part 2), Resolution is up to 1920x1080 (2,073,600 pixels at 8 bits per color, 16:9 aspect ratio, 24/25/30p or 50/60i frames per second), variable bitrates of 40 Mbps. = Audio Specifications: Formats are PCM (at kbps bitrate) or DTS-HD-MA (at 24.5 Mbps variable bitrate) or Dolby TrueHD (at 18 Mbps variable bitrate) or DTS-HD-HR (at 6.0 Mbps constant bitrate) or Dolby Digital Plus (at 6.0/4.0/3.0 Mbps constant bitrate) or DTS (at 1,536/1,509 kbps constant bitrates) or Dolby Digital (at 640 kbps constant bitrate) or MP2 (at 384/160 kbps bitrate), up to 5.1 surround sound (or PCM at 7.1/24 bit/96 khz or DTS-ES Discrete extension at 6.1/16 bit/48 khz) and up to 24 bit depth and up to 48,000 hz sample rate (or PCM at 7.1/24 bit/96 khz or PCM at 5.1/24 bit/192 khz or DTS 5.1/24 bit/96 khz extension), all formats support 2.0/24 bit/192 khz. = Capacity is 25 GB to 128 GB (25 GB SS-SL or 50 GB DS-DL being common capacity).

I upgraded from 10.04 of Ubuntu and it messed everything up. Compiz is bad - no cube, or any of the effects that go with it aside from spin (Just spins between two desktops). Most of the effects that made me proud of my computer are gone. I don't like the side-panel thing. Title bar is gone (can't drag a window). My theme is horrible. Commands people suggest rarely do what they tell me they'll do. I know very little about computers. Almost nothing. I tried to install and older version after backing up my most important files, but Unity doesn't seem to want to detect the disc (downloaded .iso). I even tried to install Debian to see if it would read that disc and than the Ubuntu disc. Same for windows, to no avail. Doesn't read installation discs. My optic drive is otherwise fine, it seems. I burn dvd's all the time. I would be in tears right now if I was the type to dissolve over stuff like that. I am unbelievably depressed about it though. I don't even know what information is useful to people trying to help other than this:
Dual-Core athalon, 64 bit, HP, originally installed was Windows Vista, NVIDIA graphics card.
Is there any way to install an older version of Ubuntu off the internet. I've researched those words over and over. I even tried as many variations of the question I could think of. Maybe I looked in the wrong places? I have a 1 Gig mp3 player, and a nokia with 8 gig. Is it possible to install from one of those? I am deeply in love with Ubuntu. I'm sure not everyone shares my opinion, and I don't blame them. Ubuntu fits like a glove for me. I curse Natty until i can figure something out. Why release if it wasn't ready? I would even install windows again temporarily in order to reinstall Ubuntu 10.04. (crazy, right?) :( So happy two days ago when i upgraded to 10.10. More of my compiz effects worked. Upgraded to natty yesterday, and now all i get is water effect, negative, magnifier, desktop spin. No cube, no sphere, no pop-out windows when spinning, no writing with fire. PLEASE HELP!!!
Does either the nokia or the mp3 work as a flash drive. (probably a dumb question)
Thnx Freakbox. Neither of the media players were recognized by Universal USB, but I think it will help when I quit being a stinge and go buy the stick. Thnx again for Uni USB Inst. Quick answer too! :)
ooh, and Zorin looks pretty sweet and easy, too. nice tip. You're cool.
To P.S.: Will do. After I install the 10.04 of Ubuntu. If Ubuntu works I'm going to test Zorin for me and my bro. Gnome for me. He's the timid windows user.

Answer
You can instal linux from a USB stick, otherwise known as your handy dandy Thumb Drive!

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

You need to find a working computer, plug in a thumb drive, and read the easy instructions on that site- you can pick the operating system you want or download your own, and then you can boot it off the thumb drive and instal it.

You might like Zorin. Zorin OS is very easy, and so is Mint.

http://www.linuxmint.com/

http://www.zorin-os.webs.com/

PS: Don't forget that you may need to search for drivers for your hardware! Ubuntu didn't come with some of mine, when I used it years and years ago!
