Should I get the new 2011 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or the iMac?

Q. I have decided that i want to switch from a PC to a Mac, but I'm stuck on which one i should get... At the most i will spend $1400, and the device needs at least 2gb of RAM... Now i am not sure whether or not to get a desktop, or a laptop because i really love my laptop i have now, but all i do is move it around my house, nowhere else... any suggestions will be nice, thanx for your help:)
I will also be using this for a home recording studio, so being fast would also be nice =)

Answer
oh gosh..simple...get a MACBOOK PRO...am a musician and been using Garage Band and Pro Logic for recording....MY WHOLE LIFE TURNS HEAVEN....everything was so simple on mac and of course professional! ... and macbook pro is very very fast if you wanna experience the meaning of fast get Macbook pro...and macbook air sucks it has no dvd player my aunt throw her macbook air cos of this! iMac is a desktop computer so if u wanna get around house or places while working, I recommend gettin' macbook pro cos it's a laptop that built for working professionals....macbook pro starts at usd1199 for 13inch...I think 13-inch is more than perfect for working...and all the amazing features, hardware & softwares u get is very very reasonable for the price though....goodluck ;)

well that did not actually answer my question?

Answer
You need software that will produce a DVD. See if your computer includes the free version of Cyberlink and follow its instructions.

I plan to build a gaming pc for the first time, and im all set with what components I am going to buy and how im going to put it together, but what do I do once its assembled and plugged in. Do i put in the operating system first, or install the drivers? Is there a certain order I have to install things? Also, do I have to do anything with the Bios if i just plan to leave everything at stock speeds for a while?

Answer
>You have to install the OS first.

To do this, go into BIOS and set your CD/DVD drive to first boot device. Stick your OS disk into the ROM drive, SAVE the change in BIOS, reboot and it will launch into the OS installer. You may need your driver disks during installation, just follow the installer and do what it says.

After your OS is up and running, the first thing to do is DISCONNECT from the internet. THen, with your security software, install antivirus and firewall. This is the first thing you have to do to prevent being infected with malware of virus'. Install antimalware as well. Superantispyware and Malwarebytes are two free programs you can install right away. Download and burn these to a disk first and then have that disk available to install the security software right away. Don't remain connected to the net until you install security software first.

After doing this, reconnect to the net. Install your drivers from the motherboard disk. Download all updates from Microsoft by running Windows Update.

CHeck the motherboard manufacturer site and see if there are any updated drivers or files to update the operating system with (but do not flash the motherboard BIOS! You don't need to do this unless there is a specific hardware reason to do so).

Go to Oracle on line and download the latest Java Engine
Go to Adobe and download Shockwave player

Depending on your OS disk, you may need to upgrade to Internet Explorer 9

You should check the DirectX site on Microsoft and download any updates to DirectX

Make sure that you ACTIVATE WINDOWS if you have not done so.

Finally -

I would invest immediately in an external hard disk and buy backup software. The one I use is Acronis True Image 2011, you can buy it on line for $49.99. Before you install anything else, back up your new installation with a hard disk image backup of the basic system using Acronis. Put these disks in a safe place where they cannot be lost so you can reinstall the basic system. There are tons of people here who REGRET THE FACT they never took the time, effort or money to back their systems up.

In lieu of this, consider a cloud computing backup on line.

What is a good gaming laptops to get?

Angel

I know ASUS and Alienware are supposed to be good, but lately Ive been hearing Alienware is not that great anymore and ASUS certain parts break down pretty fast and their customer service is bad. Are there any good ASUS or Alienwares out now? in the 1,500-1,600 or less range.

Can some people name some good gaming laptops as well as brands, I keep coming across some but then they'll be some sort of error with them.

Memory 8 GB or more with ability to upgrade
Hard drive 750 GB or more
CPU i7 3r d gen.
Graphics Card 2-3 GB or more
Windows
Display 15-17 inch etc.

Although i want a gaming computer i wont be gaming on it much, I just want a gaming computer because they tend to have more memory, and hard drive space etc.

thanks
Thank you both..Alex i had checked that laptop out and i read reviews about freezing and touch pad issues...have you experienced any issues with that? and what yr is your ASUS? are there any others you would recommend?
Also anymore suggestions are appreciated thanks

Answer
The most important factor of a gaming laptop is the graphics processor. The stronger the graphics, the better the gaming unless particularly slowed by the CPU or a ram shortage or other factors.
Video editing needs a lot of ram and a faster CPU. Stronger CPUs and graphics power take more battery power, so if they still have a standard 6 cell lithium ion, a faster laptop has a shorter battery life.
Weight is also a factor in the portability, and many people are more interested in the portability. You get a much more powerful desktop PC with a bigger monitor at the same price as a gaming laptop.
For brand quality and reliability in general, I use the customer survey published annually by PC World magazine. December 2011 is the latest, with this year due out soon.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
Although Macbooks are known as more reliable, their price to performance is terrible. They cost a lot for the CPU and graphics performance level, and the OSX operating system has a smaller list of compatible software. Also, Lenovo has 3 product lines; Essential, Ideapad, and Thinkpad. Thinkpads are considered the most robust and best keyboards and have other excellent characteristics, but they do not get high level graphics because they are business systems.

Most laptops have 2 slots for DRAM. 8GB laptops are generally 2x4GB, and that is usually plenty. The graphics ram is more important to be GDDR5 instead of DDR3 type rather than how much ram. The graphics level is important, but the ram can be shared system ram as DDR3 and so having 2 GB dedicated graphics ram is only really good if it is GDDR5 ram. In DDR3, just add it to the system ram.
You can see a reported CPU and graphics score average at this site on two tabs:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

One of the bargains in the industry is the Lenovo Y580 at Lenovo.com, but shipments are now delayed and prices were increased. They were perfect during black friday sale with $900 price on what is now $1,039.20. There are a few left at resellers.
3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB GDDR5, backlit keyboard, 15.6" screen in 1080p, 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz, 1TB 5400RPM+16G SSD, Blu-ray/DVD-RW, 6 Cell Li-Polymer, 2x2 wireless, bluetooth, HD CAM, HDMI, and a good set of extra features like one button recovery. You would have to wait for delivery. The only thing some people don't like is the screen has glare of overhead or lights behind you, but it has an extra wide color gamat with more accurate reproduction. In stock at Newegg for $1110 is DVDRW instead of bluray and a 750GB with 16GB acceleration SSD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834310661

The only manufacturers of laptops selling under their own name is Asus and MSI. Laptops are designed and produced by them and Clevo, Wistron, Quanta, Invertec, and a few other manufacturers all in China. The brands are actually just sales and service and procurement organizations doing selection of keyboards, HDDs, LCDs, and other sub-components made by other companies. Lenovo Thinkpad still has design teams some formerly of IBM and a lab for reliability testing in Japan.

At $1210 is an MSI with similar specs to the Lenovo Y580, but in a 17.3" anti-reflective screen, no SSD, and is DVDRW:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152369
You can see gaming performance here:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
If not gaming heavily, there would be no need to spend more as it is mostly only moving up the graphics power. Extra ram over 8+2GB is not very important.
I show the full HD 1920x1080 resolution since you are at the price point to get it.

This is a nice choice at Amazon of a Samsung:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Series-NP700G7C-T01US-17-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0098O6FIU
It's only flaw is bluray and DVD player, but does not show DVD writing. It may have it, but does not state it so probably does not. The color is yellow/orange. The screen is a 17.3" extra bright 400 nit. The HD 7870M is a little better than NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M. It has a 1TB HDD. The Samsung brand is a high quality one. It is heavy at 8.4 pounds.

You can browse around, but if you like the color (see it at various sites for sale by google of the model number), and don't miss DVD writing (you can buy an external one), the Samsung is an excellent choice. Just browse around Newegg by looking at laptops sorted by price at 100 per page, and then select at left the i7, and slidebar for 1920x1080, and parameters of GB of ram and HDD. You can also check Amazon, but they are harder to search.

With the article about quality, a site that shows reported CPU and graphics power and another with gaming by GPU and the places to buy being Newegg, Amazon, Tigerdirect, BHPhoto.com
it is just a matter of deciding what suits you.

Does the Mac have a blueray disc player? If not you will need to have one fitted. Normally if the machine comes with the player fitted it will also have the software loaded.

What video game system should I get?

This is going to sound really weird but out of Nintendo, Playstation, and Microsoft, which one is going to stay popular the longest? I am starting to hold off the idea of purchasing a Nintendo Wii due to the fact it almost seems like a nice secondary system to have. Not so much like when it was just N64 and Playstation. Any good ideas? Specs would also be nice.

Answer
PS3 Is free online play and a blu-ray player and the past has proven it's more "durable" meaning not to many problems such as red ring of death

Xbox 360 has a better online system and thats all i know that is better about it.

Wii is more about game play and has alot of family and mini game type games.

Can you convert any file size to a DVD?

Gabriel

I have a big file size on a video and I just want to make sure if I can upload it and burn it right.

Answer
No. That would be like Yao Ming putting on my shoes.
A DVD holds 4.6GB. You have a "big" file. Of course, I know exactly what size that is.... NOT.

Check the size of the file.

Although you can use various video converters to change the file type, and thus reduce the file size, that will cause a noticeable loss of image quality, so a better option would be to split the file into two or more parts and put the parts on different DVDs.

To make a "data DVD" (only works in a computer, and only plays using movie player software, such as QuicvkTime Player), drag the file to the DVD icon, right-click the DVD icon, and choose "Burn".

To make a DVD movie disc (plays in DVD playing software or in a set-top DVD player through your TV), here are the best options:

-- For Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate, use Windows DVD Maker, link below.

-- For pre-2011 model Macs, it came with iDVD (which happens to be discontinued now). Use it. iMovie is the app that came with your Mac for editing movies. Then it has an option to Export to iDVD, which has a Help menu, and if that doesn't answer all your questions, use support.apple.com for "iDVD menus" or whatever your question is about.

-- For newer Macs, use DVDStyler. It is a free (not a demo / trial) open-source alternative to iDVD for Intel Macs. It has most of the same options as iDVD, but not as many cool themes.

Answer
First ignore John he a spammer.

It is going to depend on what you need and how well you know puters.

This is what I would remove

DomaIQ
Yontoo 2.052
Microsoft Silverlight
Real Player
Apple Mobile Device Support (keep of you have a iPhone or iPod)
iCloud (never use the cloud)
Skype
InstallBrain Updater Service
Haali Media Splitter

HP Quick Launch

Java (TM) 6 Update 26 ( java has turned into a giant security risk)
Coupon Printer for Windows
Shop for HP Supplies
HP Customer Participation Program 14.0 (this is spyware)
HP Solution Center 14.0 (this is for problems you can solve yourself)
HP Smart Web Printing 4.60 (I just don't like this program)
HP Imagine Device Functions 14.0 ( you might want this)
Energy Star Digital Logo
Hp Setup Manager
HP CloudDrive (never use the cloud)
HP Games (You might like the games, M$ are better)
Cyberlink YouCam (lots of people like this one, your choice)
Magic Desktop
Windows Live Mesh ActiveX Control for Remote Connections ( i consider it a security risk)
Java (TM) 6 Update 22 (64-Bit) (see above)
HP Wireless Assistant ( you should understand WiFi if you uninstall)
HP Setup (only needed during first turning on)
Windows Live Essentials 2011 (I consider this to be one giant piece of spyware from M$)

Some of the HP programs are for HP to help you resolve problems. They are resource hogs and if the system is out of warranty then you do not need them.
:)
