Answer
If you were able to burn dvds with your dvd burner, it's also a dvd player. you should have the software to play the dvds from your dvd burner/player that's installed in your computer. When you properly burn them with your burner, it should play on both your computer's burner/player and your regular settop dvd player.

Answer
A DVD player is not enough to be able to BURN DVDs. What is confusing is that they sell a so-called Combo drive, which as a DVD player and CD burner in one. So it can burn CDs, but not DVDs. It can only PLAY DVD movies or read data from a DVD.
You can get a decent DVD burner. Here are two that I recommend.
Internal (PATA)
PLEXTOR Black 18X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 10X DVD+R DL 18X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache E-IDE/ATAPI DVD Burner included Replaceable beige front bezel - $99.99

External (USB)
PLEXTOR Silver 8X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 4X DVD+R DL 8X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 5X DVD-RAM 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-R 24X CD-RW 24X CD-ROM 2MB Cache USB 2.0 External Super Multi-Portable DVD Burner Model PX-608CU - $139.99

Plextor is a very good brand. Go for it.
If you want to Duplicate movies, then I recommend http://www.123copydvd.com
Good luck and Happy Computing!
