Is there a way to avoid buy a modulator to get my DVD player to work with my old TV? The VCR is blocking it?

littlered_

I have an old TV w/ a VCR hooked up to it. I bought a DVD player/recorder - but it won't play regular DVD's because the VCR scrambles it so I can't record the DVD (which I don't want to do). Is there anyway to change the setting or connections so that I don't have to buy a modulator? Thanks!

Answer
Wish I could give you better news but nope there is no setting or connection you can change that will allow your dvd player to play through your VCR. Your only solution is an rf modulator. RF modulators are not very expensive and can usually be found wherever DVD players are sold. I would check out the discount stores first ( walmart, kmart, target, etc)

qutoe from a web site ....

The reason that a DVD player cannot be connected to a TV in this fashion is due to the fact that DVDs are encoded with anti-copy technology that interferes with the VCR's circuitry. That is why you cannot make a copy of a DVD onto a VCR tape successfully. However, this also prevents you from using the VCR as a "conduit" to pass a DVD signal through to the TV.

Im wanting to buy a dvd player to hook up to my tv and record shows from my satellite. What is a tuner? what's it used for and do I need one?

Answer
The "tuner" is like the dial on your radio which let's you "tune-in" specific stations out of that spectrum of signal thats coming into your receiver (television / dvd player / vcr / cable-box / etc.)

Your television tuner pulls in the signal from your satellite / cable / antenna and is what lets you select channels to watch (to display on the monitor screen). You can have multiple tuners on the same system - each of them selecting a different signal ... but your tv can (typically) only display one channel at a time.

Some DVD players have a built-in tuner so that you can feed your cable / satellite / antenna signal though that device. This allows you to watch television (on your TV monitor) through that device instead of the signal that your tv is receiving. This the same way you can record one show on your VCR while watching a different one on the TV.

Can a person buy a VCR/DVD player that also RECORDS DVD in High DEF (HD)?

BreadColli

Answer
At this time you can't buy one that will record HD that has a built-in VCR. But I suspect there will be one on the market before the end of the year.

Expect to pay around $400 for such a dual-purpose recorder. It will likely be a Blue-Ray HD recorder. But don't expect it to be able to record from copyrighted VHS tapes.

Why would you want to do this? Your VCR can only output, at best 325 lines of horizontal resolution. You would be spending a lot of money on the recorder and blank DVD-R's with no improvement in picture quality. You'd be better off with a VCR\DVD recorder for about $150. DVDs will be with us for a while; and by the time you may want to record to HD-DVD, the recorders will be a lot cheaper. You won't lose any quality going from a DVD to HD-DVD, as they are digital formats.

What kind of cable or adapter do I need for my daughters tv?

My daughters tv is an older one, and the only place to connect a dvd or vcr is odd shaped. It's round, but instead of having one tiny hole to put the cable into, it has a couple of small prongs inside the round part....if this is making any sense to anyone, or they know what I'm talking about...I need to know if there is an adapter or something that I can buy so I can hook up a dvd player, vcr, or cable to her tv.

Answer
It sounds like the TV has an S-Video connector. To be honest, I've never heard of a TV that has only that kind of connector.

What you need is an RF Modulator. This will take the AUDIO and VIDEO outputs from the DVD player and convert them to CH. 3 or CH 4 with a Coaxial RF output. You can use this RF output to connect to the TV.

You might lose one channel of audio doing this, as most DVD players have three "RCA"-type outputs: Video (yellow) Audio Right (red) and Audio Left (white). Most RF modulators have only a single Video and Audio input (although you may find one that has all three).

Check in Radio Shack, Circuit City, or even WalMart. They have these at prices anywhere from $15 to $45. You don't need one with more than one "source" set of inputs, so don't go for the most expensive one unless you see some need for it in the future.

Answer
I know exactly what you are talking about. When I install cable in someone's home and they have an older TV, I have run into this. You have to use what we call a 300 ohm to 75 ohm 'matching transformer'. I'll include a link to one below so you can see what I am talking about.
One side has 2 wires that you will screw onto the back of the TV. The two prongs that you see on there now are from an old transformer or antenna that broke off. Take those old prongs out first before screwing in the new ones.
The other side of the adapter is where you screw on your cable.

There is one other possibility that I have seen but is very rare. I'll do the best I can to explain it. Some old TVs used to have internal antennas. These TVs have a built-in connector to screw your cable onto but they also have something that looks like a long staple on the side of it. One side of the "staple" goes to the TV housing (to the internal antenna), and the other is pushed into the connector where the cable screws in. If this is your scenario, then just pull the prongs out of the round part (the other side remains attached), then you will see a small hole where it pushes back into the TV housing for storage. After removing the prongs from the round connector, you should be able to screw in your standard cable as normal.

What's the best way to simplify a VCR/TV/DVD player/Cable setup?

Onlooker

My 80 year old mom currently has a tv, a DVD player, a VCR, and a Comcast cable box. She uses the VCR to tape one program (East Enders) after she goes to bed. Everything is of different brands. The tv is pretty good, but the DVD player and VCR are low end.

Her current setup requires her to use 3 remote controls, so it's a bit of a mess. What's an affordable way to simplify her setup so she has ideally only one remote control? Thank you.

Answer
Buy a universal remote you may need to set up remote for her.

How do I interconnect a vcr, a dvd player, and my cable box?

It's an older tv and there aren't enough connections on the back to plug them in seperately. If I connect the dvd player and the VCR together, and then to the tv, won't that work? I used to know how to do this but I can't for the life of me remember how, now.

Answer
I have experienced this same problem. There are a few possible solutions, but by far the easiest and best way is to buy an inexpensive Passive Audio-Video Switcher. These are little boxes that you plug everything into and connect to your TV. There's a button for each input, making switching between devices very straight-forward. You can usually find them for between $10 and $50 at electronic stores like Radio Shack, Best Buy or through Amazon.com.

But you may be able to solve this with what you already have. If your TV has two inputs, you could try routing your Cable Box through your VCR and then into TV input #1. Then plug your DVD player directly into TV input #2. This setup may work just fine, and also allow you to record Cable shows on your VCR. However, I would not recommend running your DVD player into your VCR, since most VCRs are equipped with copy protection circuitry, making DVD playback look bad or in some cases not work at all. If your TV only has one input for of these devices, then I would go with the switcher box solution.

Hope that helps.

Where can I buy an inexpensive DVD player to replace my VCR in 1994 Chevy Conversion van?

mis

I have a low top 1994 Chevy Glaval Conversion van and we don't need the VCR but need an DVD player and I am searching the WEB and only found DVDs that cost $400 and up for these vans. Anyone know where I can find a DVD for this van?

Answer
DVD players that work on 12 volt systems are expensive. Power inverters that convert 12 volt to 110 AC are not. Buy an inverter, and you can use any inexpensive home DVD player in the van
