Problem connecting DVD player to TV/VCR Combo?

SupaJ016

I recently inherited an old Panasonic Omnivision VCR Plus TV/VCR combo. I just plugged it in, set up the channels and stuck in a VHS tape. It works. Intending to set this up in a spare room for guests, I thought it would be nice to connect a DVD player to this as well. The TV only has two jacks on the front though: one video and one audio input. So, I plugged in these cables and connected them to the corresponding video and audio outputs on the DVD player. I get a picture but...no sound. Is there anything I can do to fix this??

Thank you.

Answer
You can convert vhs to a dvd , then play the dvd on DVD Player, here are two methods to convert VHS to DVD.
1. use dvd recorder: not need vcr and software, just record videos from vhs to dvd.
here is a guide: http://www.dvdvideosoftware.org/guide/top-7-dvd-recorder-vhs-vcr-combinations.html

2. use VCR and Software, connecting video cables, installing software, burning DVD's.

Is there any software (preferably free) to just add black bars to a video thereby changing its aspect ratio?

I have very basic multimedia equipment, just a set-top box and a DVD player.

When I download movies, I put them in my USB flash drive which I then connect to my set-top box to watch them on TV. However, my set-top box is also very basic: there is no possibility to adjust the video in terms of cropping or aspect ratio. It just display all videos in the 4:3 aspect ratio, whatever be their aspect ratios. Thus, the videos get stretched. Since many of the movies that I download are with aspect ratio greater than 2, the stretching causes the videos to be displayed heavily distorted.

For videos with aspect ratio 4:3, they are displayed unchanged.

So, I am looking for a software (preferably free) which will allow me to just add black bars to videos so that they have have aspect ratio 4:3. For example, I would be able to add a height of 212 pixels each above and below a video with resolution 1280Ã536 so that the resolution then becomes 1280Ã960.

Now, I would prefer a software that just add the bars without re-encoding the video. On top of being less time-consuming, this would avoid any potential loss in quality from the re-encoding process.

Remember, the software must not necessarily be free nor must it necessarily change aspect ratio without re-encoding. These are just preferences.

Hope, there are some video experts around here who can help.

Thanks.

How do I make a DVD with my computer that can play in a DVD player hooked up to a TV?

Is there a program that will allow me to take digital video tape from a DV camera, edit it and then write it onto my DVD drive (DVD+Rewriteable) so that the end product can be used in a regular DVD player hooked up to a television set?

Answer
You need a video capture card/device either internal or usb. Most cards or devices come with software to convert the video once it is saved to your hard drive. I use a Dazzle USB type external capture device and the Movie Star software that came with it. All you do is hook up the color coded audio and video out cables from your camera hook them up to the capture device and open the software that came with you capture device. Press play on the camera and the record button on the software and wait for the video to dump. It does not typically dump at high speed but in real time (If you have a one hour video it will take one hour to capture it to the hard drive). Most software will convert to mpeg which can be burned to VCD and will play in most newer standalone(set top) DVD players

I use "Express Burn" to burn my videos and i use maxell- dvd+r. the program copies my dvds right but my dvd player dosent read them, it either says error or no disc.

Answer
Depending on the software on your computer, you can probably watch AVI, MPG, WMV, ASF, MOV, QT, RM, and a variety of other computer video formats.

But most likely your DVD player can NOT. (It's a rare DVD player that recognizes divx, avi, or mpg.) Most DVD players recognize only a combination of files called VOB and IFO. The VOB files are the actual video files, but the IFO files are also necessary to tell the player in what sequence to play the video files, as well as other stuff like menus, scene selections, closed captioning, etc. And then, on top of all that, the player is also looking for a very specific directory (folder) structure on the disc.

When I bought my DVD burner for my computer, a copy of Nero software was included, which does the job for me well enough. But if you don't already have such software, there are free versions available. The important thing is that they are able to create Video discs, as opposed to Data discs. Data discs are simply storage discs for any kind of computer files, whether computer video or other data. Video discs, though, are created especially for playing on standlone DVD players in the correct format and structure.

As for Maxell discs, it's a very good brand to use. And most players (and burners) will handle either DVD-R or DVD+R.

I need a portable dvd player that can play a lot of different formats?

The Darkne

I need a portable dvd player with usb connection that can play most of these formats: AVI, MKV, RMVB, RM, MPEG1,2,4, WMV, MP4, FLV. Or a portable dvd player that had VLC player on it or something like that.

Answer
You won't find it. Even computers have a problem with that, and need additional software (and software "players") to handle the various formats. On top of that, dozens of codecs are needed to keep up with changing software. The vast majority of DVD players are designed to handle only one standard, and portable ones, especially, wouldn't be portable anymore if they were required to be tethered to a computer USB in order to play.

Besides, the additional software capacity, and operating system to handle it, would make it expensive beyond compare. More like a portable computer with a DVD drive in it. You know, a laptop?

How do I make a DVD made from Windows Movie Maker work on a DVD player?

Heather

I made a video for my friend as a graduation present on Windows Movie Maker and burnt it onto a blank DVD. But when I tried to watch it on a DVD player it wouldn't work, said disc error. How do I get it so it can be watched on a DVD player? I'm not very computer savvy, so the more information/help the better.

Answer
Burning a file to a DVD just makes a copy of it on the disk but it doesn't have the special coding that works with DVD players. You need a DVD authoring program which will make a playable DVD, a disk that will play in a DVD player.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 have Windows DVD Maker which will make a playable DVD. You can find it at Start>All Programs>Windows DVD Maker. It's not way down in the "Ws" but is up towards the top of All Programs with a bunch of other things that begin with "Windows....".

If you have Windows 8, you don't have DVD Maker so you'll have to download a DVD authoring program. Unfortunately, Microsoft dropped support for DVD Maker so you'll have to download 3rd party software. Just about all the freebies have some bugs and only the paid programs seem to work OK all the time. One of the easiest to use and most stable freebies is DVDFlick.
