can a dvd player(.divx,.avi compatible-has USB port) detect and play if we connect a external 1TB harddisk?

Answer
Standard DVD players don't have the capacity to parse/read in from a data-base any more than your TV would if you connected your external hard disk directly to it, I'm afraid.
DVD players are designed to read DVD formats, and sometimes flash drives, but that's all.
To understand why you can't use a hard-disk you have to understand the different between a USB flash drive and a hard-disk. ( besides the size, which is something of a non-issue these days ) is the file-formatting. A modern hard-disk will be formatted in NTFS or UFS or something like that and the operating system will control where memory goes, or how it is recovered.
A flash drive isn't formatted like that, but instead has a built in controller to organize the putting and getting of files on the drive.
The difference between the two? The need for, or lack of need for a sophisticated piece of software ( ie. an Operating system ) to parse through and read the data.
A computer has one, but Hard-disks in themselves are just containers for memory and have no capacity to do anything on their own, so it can't help you.
A DVD player has a very limited one, with very narrow capacities, which means it can only read a flash-drive ( who's controller will help it along the way ) but not a hard disk, which is just a maze of scattered data without the OS that put it there to guide you.
Don't dismay though, you can just attach the Harddisk to a laptop and use a S-video, DVI or HDMI cable to watch the .avi on your TV .
