I have a camcorder and editing software, as well as a DVD burner and software for that. Can I create MPEG files and play them on a regular DVD player? What other formats can I use?

Answer
There's a HUGE difference in what various video formats a particular DVD player will play.

So if you want to share your videos, and ensure they'll play on most players, you MUST use the DVD standard. That means, not just an Mpeg file. Must be MPEG2, with a 720x480 frame size, 29.97 frames per second (fps). Bitrate can be up to 8 megabits per second, but should be at least 6500 if you want a really clear picture.

What is the best DVD format to use for copying home video and also for digital photos?

I would like to create long lasting DVD copies of my digital photos and short video clips. I would like to play them back on my TV through my DVD player. What DVD format should I use?
Also I would like to copy old VHS and Hi8 video tapes onto DVD. What format would be the best?
DVD+/-R, DVD-RAM, DVD+/-RW?
What brands would you recommend for long lasting quality? Sony, Memorex?

Answer
Select NTSC format, 4:3 aspect ratio, and 30 frames/sec. I use 3.2 GHz computer because my 1.5 GHz computer made "jerky" action on screen. ADS DVD Xpress capture unit ($40.) accepts analog video & audio from camcorders or FHS tapes. I use Staples DVD+ discs (lifetime warranty) which play O.K. on 4 different brands of DVD players which my relatives use. Software comes with DVD X-press unit. I had to disable firewall, screen saver and wireless LAN to make good movies.
