How come I cant play burned movies on dvd player?

So I have movies that are in mp4 and avi format. I burned it onto a dvd+r disk and it won't play on an xbox 360 and a regular dvd player? Not sure how old the dvd player is because its for a friend, can't be too old I'm assuming. What file do I need to convert it into so it'll play on xbox 360 and any dvd player? What is a good program that does this fast and efficiently and isn't hard to do?

Also what disk do you use for movies dvd-r or dvd+r? What is the difference betwen dvd-r and dvd+r?

Maybe it's playing on the wrong format, but I think that DVD+-r plays all types
