Looking to try and get hold of a second hand good quality DVD player
Budget of up to £100+ - probably on eBay.
Must be all region and support VCD
Want the best picture possible for my 50inch Plasma TV.

Any suggestions?
a few years old, not too old.
What brands should I look out for...Denon?

Answer
For not much more than your budget you can get a Blu-ray player, and if you pick one with excellent upscaling performance on DVDs, it would make a great DVD player (and allow you to play Blu-ray disks should you choose now or later).

While I'm not a huge supporter of Blu-ray (to me benefit isn't worth the extra cost ... yet) it is best option for HD viewing, and once prices come down it is a logical choice for those people who can benefit (and your 50" plasma puts you in that group). Recognize that a Blu-ray player IS an upscaling DVD player ... whether or not you use it for Blu-ray disks.

That said, VCD capability and region free performance will limit your choices. While most DVD players are SUPPOSED to handle VCD you would need to check the specs. See the link for a source for multi-region / region free players.

In general brand name players are fairly dependable (e.g. Pioneer, Panasonic, Denon) ... but note that lasers do burn out eventually. I have a Pioneer Elite I bought used several years back that works great. The best upscaling players are made by Oppo.

I recently purchased a 40 inch HD LCD tv and i want to get better quality from DVD player. ?

I am not impressed with the quality of my new Samsung LCD HDTV when a DVD is played. I currently hook it up with RC cable (yellow, red, white). how can i get better quality. My DVD player does have S Video port.

Answer
Agree with above poster, use S-Video or higher connection for better picture quality currently here is the list of bad to great as far as connections go.

RF cable the worst
Red, White and Yellow (composite and audio) slightly better than RF
S-Video, waaay better than composite
Component (not to be confused with composite) it is Red blue and green cables and can handle HD content in analog form
DVI allows digital HD transfer but no sound.
HDMI the best connection, pur digital and audio is transmitted along one cable.

All of these except RF and HDMI require a seperate audio connection to get sound. Either Red and White, stereo cables, Coax analog cable or optical (both coax and optical can pass 5.1 surround sound)

HDMI has enough bandwidth to transfer the newest audio formats from Bluray players which sound even better than regular DVD sound.
