I am looking to get a blu-ray player just to play Blu-Ray and DVD discs. I am not looking for anything with apps. I just want to get my money's worth for a good, solid Blu-Ray player? What kind should I go for and why? Also, what retailer should I get it from?

Probably the Panasonic DMP-BDT 110, would be the way to go, due to the reviews that say it has good video quality compared to other players in its price range... what your going to find though is that the higher end players have better video, plus apps, this is just the way Blu Ray players are marketed, higher end players have better chips; more memory; and more apps lower end players have less apps less memory and lower end chips as a general rule...but also newer blu ray players preform better than the older model blu ray players of just a few years ago and this is especially true of the entry level line players mostly due to trickle down technology yesteryears high quality chip is now in todays economy line and the high end player has a newer chip, sometimes though the only difference is that the newer chip can do 3D and uses less electricity than the older chip so video quality on say DVD or 2D blu ray may be just as good.......a good place to buy is Amazon dot com

Is Bluray the highest quality I can get? I want to watch the Lord of The Rings trilogy at home, in the highest quality possible. Which is the device/format that can the ensure the highest quality experience?

At the present time if you want to obtain the maximum video picture quality you should purchase The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy - Extended Editions on Blu-ray Disc.
A little supplemental information that may be worth your consideration: Blu-ray Disc provides a good starting point for those who want (and can afford) the ultimate large-screen video system. Such a system would consist of a high performance Blu-ray Disc player, e.g. the Oppo BDP-103 Universal Network 3D Blu-ray Disc Player, paired with a next-generation Full 4K monitor or better yet a Full 4K projection system such as Sonyâs VPL-VW1000ES 4K Home Theater Projector and a 120- to 150-inch projection screen. Both the Oppo BDP-103 and the Sony VPL-VW1000ES provide Full-HD-to-Full-4K upscaling allowing one to obtain the highest picture resolution currently available to consumers. And to further make the case for Blu-ray Disc is that it is much easier for a video processor to upscale native 1080p (Full HD) video content to 4K than would be the case with 480i (DVD-Video) or even 720p video content.
Quoting Sonyâs white paper on their VPL-VW1000ES projector: âThe VPL-VW1000ES projector can upscale 2K and HD signals with an adaptive super resolution algorithm that approaches the quality of a native 4K signal. Compared to native 2K display, the upscaled picture is considerably smoother.â
