Thinking of Purchasing an HD DVD player?

Mscott21

It has just been announced that HD DVD is not being made any more and they are now obsolete.

I can now buy a new HD DVD player for about 85 dollars and all of the movies are very cheap.

Is it safe to still buy one to collect all of the high def movies?

Answer
We recently purchased the Toshiba A-3 HD-DVD player and it works great for playing regular DVDs (Standard Definition, or SD) upconverted to our Plasma 50" HDTV. We have really noticed the difference with HD-DVDs. If you have a new HDTV 42" or higher, it's amazing.

Something you should keep in mind is that HD-DVD movies will be re-released in Blu-Ray, but there is a shortage of Blu-Ray Discs, so the Studios who originally supported HD-DVD may take a long time to convert their movies. And don't expect Blu-Ray movie sale prices to drop below $15 anytime soon (check gizmodo.com).

Also, we have a few movies both in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, and the audio for the HD-DVD versions with our THX-certified Audio Receiver works great. Movies in HD-DVD are cheaper and harder to find, so buy them while you can because the Blu-Ray versions will not be visually better than HD-DVD.

Can I play HD DVDs in a standard DVD player?

Or do I need a certain DVD player, like for Blu-ray?

Answer
HD DVD's and Blue Rey will NOT play on a regular DVD player but regualar DVD's will play on blu rey players aas they offer bckwaard compatability, which standrd dvd player do not offer so no blue rey or hd will not play on standard dvd players but standard dvd's will play on blu rey players
