So I archived all my old dvds to an extrenal hard drive as a backup and storage. I can play them fine with WinDVD and Cyberlink Power DVD but not with Windows Media Player. Why will the play in Intervideo WinDVD and Cyberlink PowerDVD but NOT in Windows Media Player, whats the difference between those softwares ? Is there a way I can convert the files so they play in Windows Media Player ? I'm just worried that in a few years I won't be able to play these files anymore as I'm throwing the old DVDs away to make space.

All applications have diffenrent functionalities and PowerDVD and WinDVD players are built to play DVD files but Windows Media Player is a Native Windows player that plays almost many of the Movie and music files. It will play a DVD file if it has a supporting software called 'a CODEC'.
These additional files help native players like Media Player to play all kinds of music and video files.
So all you need is a DVD Codec for your Media player and well you can play all your DVDs.
Here are some Codec packs that will help you get along,
K-Lite Codec Pack
FFD Show Codec Pack
XP Codec Pack
Just Google for these names and you'll find the codecs available for free.

Two different times I've downloaded DVD decoders but neighter has helped the problem. My CD player works just fine on my computer, but I can't understand why the DVD player won't work. My DVD slot says on the front of it DVD ROM. When I put the DVD in it just spins for a few minutes then nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to activate something on the computer to get the DVD to work? Please, help.
I have a DVD player in my computer.
Answer
DVD with a copyright protect always. So I think that is the problem.
Or your DVD player not support your DVD version.
I play my DVD on computer with my Windows Media Player. Just use Aimersoft DVD Ripper to converter my DVD to AVI format.
Once I get a new DVD, I can enjoy it anywhere as I want. such as my iPod, Zune, computer etc. So I recommend you get one. Or free try it first: http://www.aimersoft.com/dvd-ripper.html#161
Hope this may help you.
