What type of dvd player would work best for a tv that is already a widescreen?

I am looking to buy a dvd player for my parents and they purchase d a wide screen tv so when you play dvds or watch tv it tends to stretch out the picture. Is there a dvd player that takes this into account or does it matter?

Answer
There is a common misperception that the screen should be full. Not so. While it is nice when it happens only material at the same aspect aratio (width to height ratio) as the screen you are watching will fill the screen ... everything else will have black bars on the top and bottom or the sides (unless the image is stretched or zoomed ... but that distorts or throws away some of the picture).

The director of a film chooses the aspect ratio, and it can vary from 1.33:1 to over 2.7:1 in extreme wideangle films. The most common are 1.78:1 (so called "16:9" -- the aspect ratio of "widescreen" TVs), 1.85:1 and 2.35:1, but others exist too.

See the image at the link to see how these aspect ratios relate on a constant width screen.

TVs often have a control that allows images to be zoomed or stretched to fit the screen ... as stated above this is distortion and most people, after playing with the different settings for a while, return to a straight undistorted image setting.

A widescreen TV will "fit" more programming (particularly if they subscribe to HD programming, which is in widescreen (16:9) format) than their old style TV (Which was 4:3 or 1.33:1 format) BUT they will still see black bars on some movies, particularly on DVD (Note: TV broadcast stations sometimes crop widescreen movies to "fit" the 16:9 screen ... and you can't control this, but the same movie on DVD might have bars).

So ... no, you don't need to buy a different DVD player for widescreen since the basic aspect ratio is determined by the movie, not the player. Maybe the above explanation will help you explain it to your parents.

If buying a DVD player for a 720p or 1080p HDTV, consider a $100-$125 (less expensive ones won't provide any benefit) "upscaling DVD player" (with a HDMI connector) or if you want to go full out, consider the Venture HD DVD player from Walmart ($200) ... which is really a Toshiba HD-A3 player (a good upscaler and it plays HD DVDs).

Hope this helps.

If I were to wire my DVD player in such a way, which I know how to do, what would happen if I got caught by law enforcement. Granted, the punishment will differ from state to state, but does anybody know in general what kind of fine/charge this would cause?

Answer
SC $400 + if the cop wants he can have the vehicle towed unless u remove the radio there on the spot......

now one way around this is if u buy the model that has build in navigation.....then as long as u switch it b4 the cop gets to ur window ur good.....

also if u wreck ur car u could b held criminally liable.......not likely but if whoever u hit has a decent lawyer they could go after u....

** btw most ppl i know that have in dash dvd have it wired so it works wile driving....most put a toggle switch under the seat or under the dash that ground it so it works.....flip the switch and the cop can't get the dvd to play so cannot write u the ticket....but have to have switch pretty well hidden......

can i fit a double din radio in my grand Cherokee 06 if i get a Bezel kit?

jdogg

I would lIke to put in a in dash navigation DVD player.

Answer
Yes, you can!

If you want the cleanest look, you'll want the factory navigation bezel (runs around $80 brand new if you don't have factory nav already) and an aftermarket fit kit. The factory nav's actually bigger than double, so you need the fit kit to size the opening down a little.

If you've got a standard radio now, another option is to cut out the opening in your existing bezel. The downside is then you've got to do some fabrication work to fill in the knob holes and make the opening clean.

Can any region DVD work on my UK DVD player or a laptop?

magnificen

Someone told me that any region dvd can work on a UK dvd player.

Is this true, or only half true (works on laptops) or completely false?

Answer
No, it's not true. However, you can modify most DVD players by using the remote control and entering a string of numbers and key presses. The trick is to set the region code to 0 (zero).

Look up http://www.dvdcodes.net/ to find out if your DVD player can be modified.

PC DVD players / recorders can be modified by software. You will have to look up the model and search Google.

What is the best way to run cd/dvd programs off of hard drive?

John

I have a new Windows 7 Ultrabook (no dvd drive) laptop. Just wondering how best to run old programs/games off of the hard drive? I have a external dvd player to transfer the files. Thanks.
Some games (like Madden/Civilization) require you to leave the CD/DVD in the Drive and not run it completely off the CD/DVD Drive.
I mean run it completely off the hard drive.

Answer
It's best to reinstall any applications or games on the new computer instead of copy and pasting the files over. Sometimes that will work but a lot of the time the programs have dependencies installed in other places (such as the registry or a folder with saved data).

To transfer you will need to hook up your old hard drive to a PC and burn the files to a cd or flash drive.

How to get avi films to play on dvd player?

ferretyles

All the films that I find to download are avi format and when I try to play them in my dvd player it will not accept that format what type of dvd player do I need to get to play these films, I live in the UK.

Answer
The answer is that AVI files need to be converted to DVD format. It does not matter what disc you burn it on DVD-R or DVD+R without the right format it will not play in your DVD player.
You need to run a conversion software. The one I am using now is called convertxtodvd. You have to pay for it, but it is so easy to use. You can choose between PAL and NTSC format (Europe or USA). Just drag and drop the file you want converted into a box and click 1 button. It will even burn it for you too. And it's a relatively quick process. (Depends on your PC and the DVD burner).
There are free shareware programs out there, but from what I have researched many are slow and cumbersome. You could also research DVDFlick or Winavi as alternatives.

best dvd players for hdtv image

JmaN

I wouldn't need an upconversion dvd player if i have a hdtv that does it for me would i?

Answer
Your tv will not rebuild the image like a dvd player will. It will simply rescale it (make it fit) into the resolution of the tv. When you use an upconverting dvd player with an hdmi cable you actualy change the resoultion of the picture vs simply sqashing and stretching the image to fit onto the screen.

What resolution should i set my upconverting dvd player to?

Matty A

I just bought a Philips DVP5990 upconverting dvd player, and i have a sharp 32" 720p hdtv. The player is hooked to the tv via hdmi. What resolution should i set it to? The obvious answer seems to be 720p, but the 480p looks better. Is it something i've done wrong or what? I know its a bit of an awkward question but i could take any help i can get.

Answer
You may have answered your own question.

In theory, as you note, 720p should be best, but there is really no way to predict ... you have to try different settings.

The problem is that there are various video manipulations involved and some scaller/video processor chips do a better job than others.

For example, if you set the DVD player to 480p output, your HDTV upconverts the progressive signal to fit the native resolution of your HDTV (i.e. 720p). If you set the DVD player to 720p or 1080i (for example), the HDTV processes this accordingly. 1080i is converted to 720p and the 720p signal is used direct.

So, depending on the relative quality of the DVD or HDTV scalers/video processors you get better or worse results.

That said, you don't say what connection type you are using and that can matter. Ideally upconverting DVD players should be connected via HDMI since on some models component is only outputting 480p, not 720p or higher, despite menu settings. And you can't get anything higher than 480 from composite or S-video.

If you are connected via HDMI, and 480p output works best in means the processor in the TV is better than that in the DVD player (and essentially you wasted your money .... not uncommon since budget upconverters rarely work well). On the other hand, if you are connected via component, composite or S-video try HDMI (you don't need to spend more than $10-$15 for a cable ... expensive HDMI cables are a rip-off).

Hope that helps.

You will want at least an 8 inch swivel screen. You don't mention a price range but affordable DVD players range from the Coby TFDVD at $117 to the Sony DVPFX at $170. I would personally recommend the extra bucks and invest in the Sony.

Can You Play Dvds in a 2008 toyota prius without voiding the warranty?

I recently purchase a 2008 package 6 toyota prius. It has a DVD Nav system, but when you put in a dvd to play, it will not read it. Now, i know there are hacks, but when you hack your nav system, doesnt that void your warranty? What are my options?

Answer
The "DVD" part of the "DVD Navigation system" is that the navigation system reads its maps and other database information off of a DVD, as opposed to a bunch of CDs or a hard drive.

The navigation system does not have an MPEG decoder, so it cannot play movie DVDs. The navigation system can only read DVDs with the proprietary navigation software/database information on it.

If you wish to watch DVD movies in your Prius, then you will either have to:
1. Purchase a portable DVD player
2. Purchase a laptop with a DVD drive and appropriate movie-watching software
(These first two options will not void your warranty.)
3. Purchase a 3rd party in-car DVD system with additional screens (most commonly mounted in the back of the front seats/headrests, or a flip-down screen from the roof) (This will only void your warranty on the components that you have mounted/connected things to them.)
4. Modify your Prius to add a video-input to display to the existing MFD. (This will only void your warranty on the components that you have mounted/connected things to them.)

Do note to check with your state/local laws regarding having a television screen viewable by the driver while moving, however...

Welcome to JustCarDVDPlayers .com. This holiday season give the gift of car DVD players to loved ones, friends and the kids you love to spoil rotten! DVD players in the car have become one of the premier luxury features of any vehicle.

At JustCarDVDPlayers .com, you can learn all about car DVD players, car LCD screens, car video systems and more. Whether you are looking for in-dash DVD players, overhead car DVD players, portable DVD players, or twin in-car DVD players, JustCarDVDPlayers .com has the products, tips and articles to increase your knowledge.

Car DVD players have become exceedingly popular with families with young kids. DVD players in the mini-van, etc. are the perfect way to entertain children and adults alike on long and short road trips.

Luxury car owners include DVD players in their cars, some just because they can and because the finest models are truly must-have luxury items. But compared to five years ago when only people with money could afford car DVD players, they are now available in a full-range of capabilities and for any budget.

The technology has also advanced. Screens illustrate this best â you can now buy LCD screens for your system that are small as five inches up to 15 inches. These screens can really be any size you want if you have the money to pay for specific customizations.

DVD player screens are mounted right into the backs of seats or overhead (the screen folds down for viewing with the push of a button). Some car DVD player screens are also available to be mounted up front in-dash.

A big advance in car DVD system audio is wireless headphones. If youâre a family on a road trip, this is optimal; the kids can be entertained for hours with the same movie they watch every day, except the parents up front donât have to hear it!

Portable DVD players are also popular with the family set. These donât have to be mounted in the car or anything. Portable DVD players are sold as a self-contained unit with screen, speakers, and DVD drive all in one. Headphones are easily plugged into a jack on the unit.

Answer
Hi, Well i know that mounting straps work about 90% of the time, so..
Give it a go, if it doesnt work you could also velcro the back of the dvd screen to the seat, therefore it's removable,(doesn't attravt theives)
Efficient and should hold great!!
Might cost you a couple of dollars but hey, its a great alternative.

Goodluck!

Can portable DVD players really take the temperature extremes of car use?

great_and_

They sell lots of portable DVD players with straps for hooking to the back of carseats - but can these players really handle car interior temperatures.

In the winter, temperatures could be subzero, would the LCD freeze?
In the summer, with the sun beating on the car, the temperature could be 150 degrees f. Would anything melt?

Are these things really designed to take that?

Answer
They are not much different then anything in your dash, but to be safe i remove mine. I have left them in at both extremes and they work fine but i usually remove them for safekeeping.

We are going on a 12 hour (one way)road trip with our children and I need to by them a DVD player. We bought one a couple of years ago and it was junk.
What is it I need to look for when comparing the lower priced models?
Also do any of them allow you to play video games?
Thanks.

Answer
The lower price models are junk -- that's why it failed. Get a name brand like Panasonic or Sony. Make sure it has input plugs to hook up a Playstation or whatever (you'll need to get the right cord for that).

Sam's Club, Costco, or Overstock.com will give you the better players at the best price.

Should I return my recently purchased HD DVD player and buy a much cheaper DVD upconverter instead?

best dvd player for the money on Mp3 Player,Car Dvd Player,Car Stereo,Car Lcd Screens,Car Mp3 Player ...
best dvd player for the money image

Nick K

Is it worth the money to keep the HD DVD player? Doesn't it do the same function as an upconverter? Please correct me if I am wrong and tell me why it is so much better to have the HD DVD player.

Answer
Depends what you paid for it (and assumes you CAN return it) and what matters to you.

First, consider whether you can really benefit from HD DVD (or Blu-ray which gives identical audio and video quality). Basically you need a moderate to large HDTV .. say 40" or so and preferably 1080p. You also need to watch from a suitable distance (say, 1.5 - 3X screen size. lower number if a 1080p and higher if 720p). You also need an HDMI connection.

As an aside, I have an HD DVD player and don't find a sufficient improvement from HD disks to justify buying them, but I have kept the player for reasons that may become evident as you read on.

There are relatively few HD DVD disks (under 400, and Blu-ray is about the same), and many movies are not available on HD DVD. Disks are more expensive than DVD and previewed disks (i.e. cheap) are not (yet) available. So -- unless you shoot yourself in the foot and refuse to watch a movie unless it is in HD -- you will be watching lots of DVDs even if you have an HD disk player (either or both formats).

An HDTV will deinterlace (if required) and upscale an incoming 480i or 480p DVD video signal. However, some HDTVs don't do a very good job. Enter upscaling DVD players ... which may do a better job. But, only a good upconverting DVD player is worthwhile. Cheap models (certainly anything under at least $100-$125) just won't beat the video processing in most HDTVs (See the article at the link for a discussion).

HD DVD players (and Blu-ray) make good upconverting DVD players, and depending on what you paid it may be the most cost-effective way to improve the picture on all those DVDs you will still be watching for some time to come (years).

You can test this by comparing a DVD on your HD DVD player and on your present DVD player. Is the picture sufficiently improved on the HD DVD player to perceive a benefit?

If you can benefit from an upconverting DVD player, and the HD DVD player you have is about (or maybe slightly higher than) the price of a good upconverting (non-HD) DVD player (e.g. Oppo 981, $229) consider keeping it. It may help to consider the HD DVD player not as an HD DVD player per se, but as an upconverting DVD player that also plays HD DVDs.

So ... there are some factors to consider. Hope they help.

I have a very good sony blu ray player (that I hardly ever use). I would like to stack it with my others underneath my tv, but it's so high that I'm afraid it would fall in an earthquake if I did that. What do you think, keep the cheaper to replace DVD player or change it in favor of the blu ray player?

Answer
apparently blu-ray can play DVDs as well as its own blu-ray disks. but still... i'm sticking to the now classic DVD player. what's the rush? feels like just yesterday we made the switch from VCR to DVD! so keep the blu-ray bc it can play both i guess. i mean since you already bought it, don't let it go to waste.

idkk

I bought a 46" Sony Bravia and at the store the quality seemed amazing but when I play a DVD with my upscaling dvd player the picture seems to be grainy...no matter what setting that I try..what can I do ?

Answer
So your picture quality depends on a few things:
1) Your TV
2) Your source material [this case your upscaling DVD player]
3) cables

You have a good TV, and the upscaling DVD player probably does 720p or 1080i, which is enough if you only have a 720p set. With 1080p it'd still probably be pretty good.

With that in mind, I believe your problem is the cables. Are you using high definition cables? You'll need either component cables or a HDMI cable. If you're using composite (yellow/red/white) or s-video, you're only getting a standard definition picture sent to your TV.

If you buy a cable, you don't have to get the super expensive ones, just check them out at some place like www.monoprice.com. You can get them for considerably cheaper there, and the quality is almost the same. With expensive in-store cables, more than 50% of the price is the markup. So those $100 cables you see get sold to employees for like $20.

Hope this helps.

the ps3 is equiped with blu-ray and can play standard dvd's thats a well known fact by now. however, does playing a standard dvd in the ps3 improve it in anyway (picture/sound quality), or will it still seem like its being played in a standard dvd player?

Answer
Yes it will noticeably improve the picture quality of your standard dvds. If your PS3 is connected to a HDTV via HDMI it will send up to a 1080p signal, even though regular dvds are only in 480p. When you send your tv a digital signal with the HDMI it's one less digital to analog - analog to digital conversion it has to make.

TV only plays DVD player in black and white?

Just got a new Toshiba tv, model 32C120U. My DVD player, Wii, N64, etc only show up in black and white and with poor sound quality. I've tried various combinations of where I plug in the cables, and they work fine on my old tv. Help?

Answer
Your TV shares the Component video (Toshiba calls it Colorstream Component video) with the composite video connection. If you are using composite video connection (yellow for video and red and white for audio) you need to do a couple of things to get color instead of black and white.
1 - connect the yellow (video connection to the green rca connector on your TV and connect the red and white audio to the red and white rca connectors that are just below the video connector.
2 - go into your TV's menu and look for 'Preferences'. Under 'Preferences' look for 'AV input'. When you get there, you should have a choice of ColorStream HD and Video input. Select Video input.

Doing those things should get all of your devices back in color.

How Do I Find The Correct Channel For Videogames?

I believe I have correctly connected my Wii to my TV. The three red white and yellow plugs have been connected to the SCART connector supplied with the console, which in turn has been plugged into the one SCART socket in the back of my TV. There is nothing else connected to the TV (no DVD/video player etc).

I have gone through all 100 channels on my TV with my Wii system switched on and not found the correct one. Does anyone have any solutions? I'd greatly appreciate it!

Answer
Try putting it on Video/Tv mode or Video 1 or 2

Can you recommend a good video player to replace Windows media player?

Can you recommend a good video player to replace Windows media player?

Needs to be free, and as good as Media player. Media Player is not playing all of my downloaded files, Iâm running XP and this is for downloaded files, not DVDâs movies.

Answer
I've tried tons of alternatives including all of the ones mentioned here (in the comments area) and i find these are the best, in order of importance, and the reasons why:

1. Gom Player

Why?: It seems these guys decided to look and steal the best of what makes the other players good and incorporate it into a very smart, clean interface. It can play some partial files but can't play some things like Vobs, and Bin files

Download: http://www.gomplayer.com/download.html

2. Vlc Player

Why?: This is the granddaddy that can play ANY video file out there. It's user interface is GAWD-AWFUL (quite possibly the most annoying and developer abused tool when it comes to user interface ever). It is solely because it can play ANY movie file including ANY partially downloaded video file that makes it a very important part of video players. Besides that i have only bad things to say about this program.

3. Media Player Classic

Why?: This one was put together by a hacker team who was fed up with Microsoft and their half-arsed work on Windows Media Player and took the v6.0 Media Player and spruced it up BIG TIME. It has a lot of features and can play some partial files well,

Download: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/media_player_classic.cfm

For me i use ALL 3 of these ones together since each can do something the other cant. But Gom is the closest to being perfect. For you i recommend you get Gom Player and depending if you are a big p2p downloader i would also recommend u get Vlc Player too (to play partial movie downloads -- this program is incredible at that).

I also recommend you download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack..this will give you all the video codecs that you need to play ANY movies/videos that you come across without concern for cases like video runs but no audio, or vise-versa...

What resolution should i set my upconverting dvd player to?

How long does it take for Geek Squad to repair a Home Theater DVD Player?
