Normally you can't play AVI on a DVD player, unless it is something like a DivX AVI file, and the DVD player supports playback of DivX media - but it kinda depends on the features of the player in question...

DVD's use VOB files, which are essentially just MPEG-2 video files, with extra features such as subtitles.

In fact, if you have a VOB file from a DVD, and that file has no subtitles, if you rename it to an MPG file, it can be played by Mediaplayer.
