best dvd players for cars kids image
Q. So you'd be depriving them of the way kids in present day are commonly raised?
I don't want my kids to have the luxury of his parent owning a nice car (ie. SUV, car with power windows and working air conditioner) or having toys and services that I never had (ie. dvd player in car, their own room, prepare breakfast for them (once their older than 7)).
Do you consider it wrong? These things don't assure for a better life, and depriving them of these things don't physically damage the child.

Answer
Well, definitely if you had an abusive childhood...
But onto the actual matter you are discussing. It is acceptable to an extent, but you do have to consider the world they have to live in. Luxuries, like all of your examples, are not something you need to provide Although I don't know where you would expect to find a new car without power windows or air conditioning, and it seems like a "cutting off the nose to spite the face" situation to specifically put in the extra effort to find and buy a worse car just to keep them from be able to enjoy a better one.
Anyhow, back to being aware of the world around them. For better or worse, children who are in school now are expected to have a computer at home, in most places. Perhaps if you are extremely rural, that will be different, but if you are anywhere that has a reasonable amount of internet coverage, they will be expected to have access to it for homework and projects. If you don't have one, it will be a lot of additional work for you to ensure they can do what is expected of them (don't expect schools to do everything necessary)
Another concern is this: if you want to raise your children in the manner of running around free outdoors on evenings and weekends with their friends, you need to be aware that they likely will not have many friends to play with. Parents today seem absolutely petrified of their own shadows when it comes to letting their children play outside, so it is just not possible to raise your children in that kind of environment anymore.
When I was a kid, the child who was not aloud to play outside was an outcast; now it seems the child who is not aloud to play online is.

What are some fun games/activities to keep kids occupied on a long car trip?
Shekhinah
My kids are 7 and 5 and we are going camping this weekend, but the drive is going to be about 5 hours each way. What can I do to keep them busy? We don't have a DVD player for the car or anything.
AxCx- you don't know what you're missing! I'm a nature-girl and I wouldn't trade that for anything!
