Do laptop dvd players play dvd's from any region?

Becky

Ok very strange and nerdy question, long story on why I want to know. Im not evenb really sure what is meant by the term region I have an advent if that helps.
thanks

Answer
No.
DVD players play from one region at a time. You can reset that region 4 times, before the firmware disables that particular DVD drive. It does not matter if it is a laptop DVD drive or a desktop DVD drive.

It does not matter if your laptop is an Advent, or a Toshiba, or an Acer or a Dell.

is my laptop's dvd player dead?

amer_almoh

hi

i have a Toshiba satellite, its about 14month old.

recently it has been making funny noses every time i use the dvd player, many times it would not even read many of my dvds. lately it had not been reading anything at all, though when i use the same dvd on my other laptop, they work fine!

is my dvd player dead ? is there a way to test the dvd palyer ? is there a why to fix or change the dvd player with out of getting a new laptop ?

Answer
My Toshiba's DVD player died every Christmas for 3 years. Fortunately, I bought a 3 year warranty so each DVD replacement was free and included a free loaner. After the last warranty service, I sold the machine and bought a new HP with a new 3 year warranty. On day 31, the DVD died again.

The DVD dies in stages. First, it stops writing, then it stops reading, finally it stops ejecting.

If you don't have an external HD for backup, backup to DVDs while the DVD is still working. If you arent under warranty, the replacement DVD may cost a few hundred dollars.

can i connect a dvd player to a laptop?

fm m

Is it possible to connect my dvd player to my laptop and then watch the dvd's on the laptop? (my dvd rom doesnt work:( )
If it is possible, what cable do i need?

Answer
A regular DVD player? You'd need some type of video input on your laptop, which is unlikely that it comes with one, so you'd need a video capture card type device (either PCMCIA or USB). Then you just run the video out on the DVD player to your video in and run the audio out to the line-in on your sound card. But the quality is gonna suck and you're going to be lugging around a lot of equipment and cables just to watch a DVD.

I think a better solution would be an external PCMCIA DVD-ROM drive or just replace the internal DVD drive (you should be able to find the drive on eBay and replacing it is not THAT hard if you have a little knowledge about taking things apart).

problem with dvd player on laptop (region code)?

Philip B

Hi @ll
I had a little problem and had to reinstall windows Vista completely
since then I'm not able play dvd movies anymore which is really annoying.
It comes always the error message
"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD cause the disc prohibits the playback in your region of the world. You must obtain a disc that is intended for your geographic region."
but the dvd are original and bought in the states.
And I also didn't had this problem before I reinstalled vista again.
would be great if someone could help me with question.
cause I love to watch movies.

thx
philip bauer

Answer
You'll have to change the region of your DVD player.

*** You only have 5 changes, after the last, that'll be your permanent region***

You must be logged in as the administrator, or be part of the administrative group to make this change. You also need to have a DVD for that region in your drive when you make the change.

Right-click "My Computer" and select "Properties". On the "Hardware" tab, click "Device Manager".

You'll see a list of devicesâdouble-click DVD/CD-ROM drives the right-click the DVD drive that you want to change region settings for then choose Properties.

On the "DVD Region" tab change it to the region you want (1).

Region 1: U.S., Canada, U.S. Territories
Region 2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and Middle East (including Egypt)
Region 3: Southeast Asia and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
Region 4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
Region 5: Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
Region 6: China
Region 7: Reserved
Region 8: Special international venues (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)

Question about hooking up a Wii to a Portable DVD Player and a laptop. Please Help?

Marko

I want to somehow hook up my Wii so the monitor or the screen on which I see it on is either my portable DVD player or my laptop. It doesn't HAVE to be sound but hopefully there is. Is there any way? If Yes, please help.

Answer
yes there is, get something like this http://www.amazon.com/AV-Multi-Input-Output-Selector/dp/B000JCS9R0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247000158&sr=8-4, at your local walmart/big lots, connect the cable that came with your portable dvd player to the output, connect your wii cable to the input, and select video input on your portable dvd player
(if you want pictures of a demonstration, just comment)

What are good Christmas presents for someone headed to Boot Camp in January 2007?

My brother-in-law is shipping off to Boot Camp in January, and my wife and I are wondering what sort of things he is allowed to bring. Books? Portable dvd player? Laptop? Any ideas and suggestions would be helpful!

Answer
Not many personal items are ALLOWED in Boot Camp, definitely NOT DVD players & Ipods.

They are confiscated during the term then returned to the person as they depart for school.
Instead, put together a care-package.
Small items such as fingernail clippers, stamps for writing letters, a couple of decent cheap writing pens that will not leak and do not have caps that you will lose, baby powder for feet and for that rash that WILL show up, heavy duty healing ointment like Aquaphor for dried cracked skin, Ben Gay is a must, disposable lighters (they are not used for smoking either), large package of Q-tips (helps in rifle cleaning among other things), a small portable shoe shine kit with Kiwi Boot Black (black boots are still used in training), small sewing kit like you use with camping gear, some acne medication (everyone breaks out due to all the dirt and sweating), a couple of unscented antiperspirants, plain writing tablet with plain envelopes, a couple of small notebooks, a black, brown, or olive green waterproof watch with a net band, and a Pre-Paid calling card!

I know it doesn't sound like much but you have no idea how much those things will be appreciated if you don't have those things with you. Save your portable DVD players & Ipods for their graduation presents from Boot Camp where they will actually be able to enjoy them.

Also, 3/4 small laminated waterproof photos of friends & family is nice to have.

how do I know if all I need is a driver or a whole new dvd player for my laptop?

spjcbjp

I have a Gateway MX 8738. It will play cd's but not 'dvd's. I honestly can't remember if I ever played a dvd in this laptop or not...sorry. I have to pay for software to detect if I need a driver. So, how do I know if all I need is a driver, or if I need to purchase a new dc/dvd player for my laptop?

Answer
hi, i'm Thomson from Daniusoft DVD Ripper
I think if you want to watch your DVD everywhere then you should buy a DVD player, if not, buy a driver. The only difference between a DVD player and a driver lies in the capability of being taken here and there.
