do you think ubunto is a good os and why?

mkg101carp

im wanting to change my os for several reason, one of which i simply want one that works better. i've got vista, and im alright with it, but would like to get window's seven, i've heard it's better. but i stumbled across ubunto, can anyone out there tell me the pro's and cons of it?

Answer
YEs its better .. but for a first timer I would suggest linux mint 10 .. its based on ubuntu ( you get ubuntu's support and everything - based on teh same system) BUT in addition you get java / flash / codecs/ drivers / better programs out of teh box .. Linux mint 10 is based on ubuntu 10.10. my Gf has been using linux mint for 2 years now since i installed it for her and she will never go back to windows after that. its stable fast secure easier to install software ( package manager) and so on. You should try it :)
www.linuxmint.com

Vista was a dead cause. Vista is what made my GF switch to linux. IF you install linux mint you can go on Xchat support channel my name is raj i can help you.

PS. they are both open source and free.
Free as in freedom not free beer :) firefox is opensource / VLC player is opensource .. one of teh best softwares on the market are linux based open source software!!
if you need instructions on how to download burn and install ( you can dual boot meaning leave windows vista and just add linux mint on your computer side by side.
1) download linux mint 10, 32 bit DVD version
2) download and install imgburn.com to burn the iso (image file) file you downloaded into a bootable dvd
3) take that dvd place it in your DVD/cd tray and boot from it, you may have to tell your bios to boot from DVD ( access your bios usually either F1 or DEL key as soon as it boots)
4) run teh live dvd ( will be much slower as its running live from your dvd) if you like it click on install icon and choose wheather you want it to install on teh entire drive or side by side
5) that is it !
Pros: No viruses No spyware NO antivirus is needed ( 99.99% viruses are made for windows)
free softwarew .. never pay for your software again ( free open source software)
faster more efficient
Unix based - a cousin of mac os x ( both are unix based)
huuge community to back you up and help you - nothing like windows where you have to pay for it to get fixed.

cons: IF you like a lot of windows games then linux is not for you - i am not talking about browser internet games)
you may run teh games in wine but not all of teh will work,

that is teh only con i can think of.. kinda like a MAC, that cant run windows games / software .. but wine may help however there are tons of linux alternatives to almost every software you use on windows.
