Anybody know if it's worth purchasing Linux? Is it true what they say about it being better than Windows? And what would be the most up to date version to buy?
Thanks Guys... I just wanted to try out Linux, Just for kicks. I'm not a PC wiz... Just like to try stuff out.
I have a laptop with now OS installed... I was just thinking to install Linux... thanks again

Answer
Linux is open source therefore it is FREE OF CHARGE

For gaming there is XP

For everything else there is Linux

Why Linux is Better

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 9 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Also worth considering :

Fedora Remix (Fedora with elements of Linux Mint)

Ubuntu 10.04

Again Fedora Remix and Ubuntu 10.04 can be run direct from the LiveCD/DVD without touching your Hard Drive

Also you can try out as many different Linux distros. as you like on LiveCD until you find the one thats right for you DISTROWATCH.COM gives full listings (second lists the major distributions)

In the case of LiveCD's there is much to be said for them. Performance can vary depending on the speed of the machine but they are not so slow as you would be led to believe. Performance is quite acceptable on a machine with the following specs. 2.4ghz P4 CPU + 2gb RAM

The major downside is settings cannot be saved between sessions so it is better to use a Linux distro. that will work out of the box without the need to install things like Flash player and multimedia codecs.

Ubuntu does not lend itself well to this as you need to install packages to get the most out of it

Here are a couple I recommend

Linux Mint 8

I am not suggesting Linux Mint 9 as there are issues with enabling 3D acceleration when running from the LiveCD
