Hi, If I purchase a dvd player that plays divx does this mean that this player will play .avi files ?? It is so much quicker to burn a downloaded avi to a dvd+r rather than having to convert the avi to dvd and then burn it, and I was just looking to save time by finding a player that will play avi's.

Many DVD players out there claim playing divx, however they don't always work.
The standard format is the .Vob/.Ifo - MPEG2 format, the files you have now are in AVI format..

Most regular DVD player only recognize standard video DVD which should include VOB, IFO and BUP files, can't recognize the avi file, if your dvd player is regular DVD player, you should use right software to make a standard video DVD from your avi file.

Upscaling / upconverting DVD players?

I'm pretty new to this HD thing. I got a 37" Sharp (710p) HDTV which I currently have hooked up to my Xbox 360 for watching DVD's. I thought, perhaps naively, that if I got a DVD player with upconversion/upscaling, I would see an improvement in picture quality of standard DVD's.

So I got an $80 Sony at Costco which I hooked up directly to the TV through the HDMI cable which came with the player and Yikes! The picture quality is even worse than when I watch movies through my Xbox at 420p. I tried changing the settings on the DVD player to 720p and 1080i, and both looked terrible.

Am I doing something wrong? Or do I have unrealistic expectations that an upconverting DVD player would be better quality than 420p on the Xbox?

Up-converting DVD players rescale the 480 DVD resolution to a higher resolution. Your TV does the same thing. So what's the point of an up-scaling DVD player?
Well, initially, up-scaling DVD players were quite expensive because they had very good upscalers in them. Generally, they did a better job than the upscalers in the TV. So, you could get an improvement in the picture. There still are expensive up-converting DVD players that will give you a better picture.
But an $80 player isn't going to do a better job than a $2000 TV.
BTW-you should never have the DVD player upscale to a resolution higher than your TV's. The TV just has to downscale to it's native resolution. Doing it twice just degrades the picture more.

i don't care about Blu-ray or HD-DVD's, just want a regular DVD player that streams Netflix. would be good if it played VHS too, but doubt they make those anymore. user friendly, price range $150 tops

We have a sony surround sound system but the actual dvd player where the speakers are connected to is very old. We want a new one with bluray built in. Is it possible to purchase just the dvd player? what is the dvd player called because when i search for "bluray dvd players" none of them have the inputs for the speakers. Do we need a sony brand player to work with the sony speakers?

It is possible to do what you want, but it is ill advised. It is unwise to mix-n-match HTIBs (Home Theater In a Box) as they are made specifically for their components. HTIBs sacrifice quality for convenience. If you want full upgradability in a home theater system, you should pick one that has a separate receiver. You will not find another "DVD player" that has the connections you need because the system you have is a DVD/surround-sound-receiver.

are you trying to connect DVD player to DVR? most new DVD players don't have the yellow-red-white connections. they either have the s-vid, reb-green-blue or hdmi. depending on what you got set up, i'd have the dvd player and the DVR connected directly to the TV.

I heard that they've stopped making hd dvd players. I have multiple dvds that wouldnt ever be made into blu ray disks. would i still be able to play them on a blu-ray player if they stopped making regular dvd players?

Almost all Blu-Ray players will player your regular DVD's I personnaly have not seen a player that can not play a DVD, but have heard there a are couple. A Blu-Ray player will also upconvert a standard DVD to near HD quality, not quit as good as a Blu-Ray dics, but better then your regular DVD player

portable and not portable the answer is yes. You can install many multiple dvd players as long as you have a audio and video divider from radio shaq or from other places. I used to have 2 dvd players, and 5 screens. The answer is yes. you just have to get the audio/video divider. but as far as listening by using your car stereo is hard to do and may be impossible unless you have a different receiver on it. You can do this. just put ear phones on both and you can still listen to your music in your car.

Q. I've seen youtube vids (although they're primarily other DVD players) and I have the RCA female to female hookup that sticks into the AV input but it's still not working. Any help is appreciated!

K the first thing you need to do is connect the xbox 360 to female part and then connect the dvd player to the female part. then there should be input or output switch. make sure its on input and that should work. :)

P.S. all depending how old it is but some of the older ones can't use this feature but i do believe this one can. good luck!
