i want to put avi files into a dvd and watch it on tv and i don't think my dvd player can read avi files...

I always burn avi to dvd with Total Video2Dvd , very easy to use, work on home dvd player

step 1: Click "New Project", add video files,
step 2: Click "2. Menu", view dvd menu,
step 3: Click "3. Output", Click "Convert & Burn" output.

i downloaded a movie from the internet and want to get it to play on my dvd player. ive tried .avi and .mp4 format. does anyone know one for sure and where i can convert it for free.?

Your DVD player probably only supports .VOB files ( DVD files), so you need to convert the movie files to that format before you can play it on your DVD player
