what is "region free DVD player"?

jack

I got a bounch of DVDs from China, but my DVD player(bought in Wal-mart in US) would not read them.

I heard because there is a problem with region code or something. and the only way to play those DVDs are through a region free DVD Player...

can somebody explain to me what that might be, and if possible, where could I find one of those here in US?

Thanks.

Answer
Region coding on dvds is basically done to prevent the sale of dvds from one region to the next because release dates are different in the different regions. It also has something to do with pirate dvd prevention. If you want to pick up a region free dvd player I suggest you surf the web a bit and order one from overseas (Europe). I bought one when I was stationed in Germany. The price is compareable to the US, maybe a bit more. Otherwise I would suggest just sticking to Region 1 discs.

I need to buy a region free dvd player but I need someone to help please.?

I purchased some dvd movies for my dad for his birthday and I baught them from ebay. The dvd's are from the u.k. I live here in america. The dvd's I got him do not work. Someone told me if I purchase a "region free dvd player" it will work. My questions are

1. Is the region free dvd player compatiable to with a flat screen LCD t.v.?

2. Are you able to play american dvd's on a region free dvd player?

and is there anything else I need to know? I plan on buying the region free dvd player on ebay.

I would appericate it so much if someone can give me some information before buying one on ebay. Thanks!

Answer
A region free DVD player isn't hard at all to come by, infact 90% of the cheapest youll find in shops are region free .. this is because to save money, the maker makes them for the whole world with every region built in and only when it gets shipped to a certain country it gets it region identity added, but sometimes to save even more money they don't waste cash by installing the region limiter making multi region or region free.

These DVDs are compatibale, its only a tiny bit of software added or never added.

Interested in buying region free Japanese anime. Will I be able to play on my DVD player?

DemonBookL

I've found a website that looks pretty legitimate that carries the Japanese anime box sets I'm interested in. Although they are coded as region free I'm still concerned they might not work in my DVD player. Also, I'm worried that if they do work in my player I won't be able to navagate the menu to turn on the English subtitles. I'd hate to waste the money on something I can't use and would love to hear from anyone who has had experience in this.
Do they sometimes have English and Japanese menus?

Answer
If the DVD is free of region encoding, then you should be able to play it on any DVD player.

As for the menus, that's going to come down to whether they were designed well and whether they have English or only Japanese.

As for the subtitles, many DVD remotes have a subtitle button to let you easily toggle through the subtitle options.

EDIT
I don't know if they have Japanese and English menus, but if the DVD was intended to be sold in US markets, it's very possible they do. Again, this comes down to how the DVD was designed. But even if all the menus are in Japanese, it should still play on your DVD player if it doesn't have region encoding.

where can I buy a region free DVD player?

Nightwishf

because I'm looking for one.

Answer
Well Nightwishfan, I typed DVD Player - region free into the search bar and there were many choices. I tried one listed as 220-electronics and they have plenty of different models listed. The manufacturers were Panasonic, JVC, Pioneer, Toshiba, Samsung, Sony, LG and more. Prices ranged from $36.00 and up to ridiculous. They also have many Blu-ray players that are also region free listed, prices at a quick glance were $99.00 and up. Try this link below.

Good Luck, keep your chin up and may the sun always shine upon your day.
