In France, do most families have DVD players or VHS players?

Q. I am going to stay with a French family for a short period of time and am making a slideshow of some photos for them. However, I don't know if they'll be more likely to be able to play a DVD or a VHS. I know nothing about the family (such as technological/socioeconomic status) and cannot ask them myself. What should I bring?

Answer
I would bring a DVD. The French are on about the same level with Americans on DVD usage. VHS can still be rented, but DVDs are more commonplace. Be careful, though. The French use a different encoding standard than the US for video/movie disks. To be 100% safe, use something that can easily be played on a PC with Windows. If it doesn't work in the DVD player, then you have a back-up on the laptop/desktop computer.

I need PAL and NTSC DVD recorder/VHS player?

javega8

Here's the Deal....I am from the US, but currently in Qatar. So my issue with the whole PAL and NTSC thing. I need a DVD recorder/VHS. But has to be fairly priced.

**I need an unit that will play NTSC VHS tapes from back home (I know it's old school.)
**But also be able to record onto DVDs from both NTSC and PAL.

I currently have PAL TV here in QATAR, but when I go home I want to be able to use it with NTSC TV there too with not problems except for having to get a converter. So I need it to be fully functioning in both places.

Thanks for the help!!

Answer
I would think the reason you haven't got an answer yet is because it will be hard to find such a machine that also offers quality. One thing you need to keep in mind is whether or not you would be able to have the machine fixed in Qatar if you have a problem with it.

There are decent PAL/NTSC DVD recorders and there are good PAL/NTSC vcrs but I've never seen a combo unit worth buying.

If you want to record TV shows, I'm not sure it is worth the expense of a dual format DVD recorder. I think I would go with a better quality dual format player to view DVDs with and do the recording on a vcr.

This here is the best dual format DVD player (also an upconverter for when you get yourself a HD tv) I have found so far and use in a lot of my installs:
http://oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_features.html

With the vcr you have to make sure it will play on whatever tv you have. I am not an expert as far as vcrs are concerned but from what I understand, a lot of the multi format units only work on one format of TVs with a converter between the VCR and TV.

Here's is one that seems to do it all and comes from a decent brand:
http://www.dvdoverseas.com/store/index.html?loadfile=itemsv5000.html

Last but not least, make sure that whatever you buy is both 110/220 volts and 50/60 hz.

Good luck.

toshiba dvd/vhs player?

John S

I have a Toshiba sd-v295 dvd/vhs player. I bought it new and have had it for around 5 years now, I can't get any audio when I play a vhs, but when I play a dvd it has great audio. I played a vhs when it was new and had no audio even then, it plays the movie fine, great picture and play, but it has no audio. I can fast forward/reverse etc...but no audio. I must have it hooked up correctly or the dvd audio would not work,,,,right?? Somebody help me please,,;o) I just want to watch some old movies on vhs but the audio isn't there...

Answer
You probably don't have it hooked up correctly sometimes those units only have to have one connection for audio for both VCR and DVD but other times you have to hook up two separate connections one for DVD and another for VHS depending on how the unit was designed...you might also try pluging in the connections for the VHS and once you get that going with sound; the DVD may be able to play through those same connections for VHS but not the other way around....but just unplug everything and try and get the VCR to work fist and then the DVD player.....last

VHS to DVD player?

What are tools i need to turn vhs into dvd movie?

I have both a vhs and a dvd player/recorder

Answer
If you have a DVD recorder, you can connect it to the VHS player and play the VHS and record on the DVD recorder. If they are one unit, then you just insert the VHS tape in the proper slot and a blank DVD disk in the DVD drive.

If all that does not work, you can go to the following web site and have them do it for you.

Good luck.

How to hook up a magnavox dvd/vhs player to a sylvania tv?

best dvd vhs players on DVD VHS Recorders - Combo Unit, Digital Tuner, Multi Function, Sony ...
best dvd vhs players image

Karr

I have a magnavox dvd/vhs player along with a sylvania 20in flat screen tv.

How do I hook it up?

Answer
It should have come with three coloured 'RCA' Wires.

The colour does not matter as long as one plugs into the "video output" via the DVD player and into the "AV video input on the TV"

The other two would be stereo connectors and should be connected in the same manner in the speaker ports.

Power up and away you go

I have a sansui dvd/vhs player/recorder and the remote wont work, Can I buy a universal remote to make it work?

Olivia

This sansui dvd/vhs player/ recorder is over 10 yrs old but I mainly use it to play dvds but all of a sudden the remote has been acting weird. I put new batteries in and it started to work fine but now it wont even work. The player works fine but the remote doesn't. Can I buy a universal remote to make it work?

Answer
You can, but you will likely lose some functions. I have a Phillips universal remote that was much easier to set up than others that I've used. I can't find a model number or part number on it. It was $14.95 at CVS. It automatically searches for the appropriate codes.

Can anyone help me with DVD/VHS player and TV with converter box?

Sew What?

My son brought me a DVD/VHS player that he had in storage. He tested it on his television and it works. The television I'd like to hook it up to is an older one with a converter box attached. Of course, neither the television manual or the DVD/VHS player address converter boxes.

Am I going to run into trouble with this when I go to connect the movie player to my television? Both machines are over 5 years old.

Answer
Not a problem. Here's the procedure:

To use a VCR with a digital converter:

1. Connect a very good antenna to the converter's input.
2. Connect the converter's coaxial output to the VCR's antenna input.
3. Connect the VCR's coaxial output to your TV's antenna connector, or connect the composite jacks from the VCR (yellow-red-white) to a composite input on your TV.
4. Set the converterâs output to channel 3 or 4.
5. Set the VCR tuner to the same channel as step 4 and leave it there permanently.
6. If you connected the VCR to your TV's antenna jack in step 3, set the TV's tuner to the same channel as step 4 and leave it there permanently.
7. Select the desired digital channel with your converter's remote. Get a good picture on your TV.
8. Program your VCR for the desired time span to record.
9. Leave the converter and VCR as-is until recording is complete. You cannot watch one channel while recording another.

If you want, you can turn off the TV once youâve obtained a good picture on the channel youâre going to record. The TV itself has no function during the recording process.

IMPORTANT: Check the userâs guide for your converter for a âpower down timerâ feature. Most of them have such a timer, and the box comes with it set to a default of 2 to 4 hours. If you set your VCR to record something 5 hours from now, the converter will be off and youâll get nothing. The userâs guide will tell you how to disable the power down timer.
