Where can I get a mac 101 dvd player free download??? can i get it at the apple store?? please help?

Q. please, please help me. this is driving me crazy. all i can find on the website about this is the info, but nothing about downloading it. i really need help!!!

Answer
What do you mean? Macs ship with an app called DVD Player that's built into OS X. Also, you can download VLC for free: it's a multi-use media player that plays just about everything - including DVD's.

If you accidently deleted DVD Player you can re-install it from the Restore Disk - just put the disk in and select "install bundled software" and un-check everything except DVD Player.

When using the burn mac app, should I make it a DVD-Video, or Div-X?

Bob Jones

I want to burn a full length movie, but I don't know which format I should burn to...

Does anyone else use this program, and know which looks better?

I currently have the movie in both a .avi and a .mp4 file.

Answer
To play in a regular DVD player, it has to be DVD-Video format.

A Divx dvd can only be played in a computer (or special DVD player that says Divx on it) but it can store more videos than the conventional DVD format.

DVD-Video is capable of better quality than Divx, but their are more important factors affecting quality.

Every time a video is compressed, it looses quality. You want to make the video go through as few compressions as possible. Your AVI and MP4 videos are already compressed; ideally, you want to start with uncompressed video. MP4 is the highest quality compression, and DVD-video is very high quality compression too, so it might not look so bad using the MP4 and DVD-Video. But they are two different compression formats, so transferring between the two will loose video quality. AVI and Div-X video are the same compression, so using the AVI and on a DIVX DVD should result in no further compression.

For the best possible quality, just burn a Data DVD with the MP4 on it. It's the highest quality compression, and copying it straight to the disk will mean no further compression. But, it will only play in computers (or special DVD players that say MP4 on them).

Does MacTheRipper preserve the links and everything else as it was from the original DVD?

Nelle

Do I make a disk image from the contents of the 'rip' in Disk Utility and then mount that DMG file in order to recreate the DVD 'experience'?

Answer
MacTheRipper (MTR) will preserve the links and everything else from the original DVD when you do a Full Disc Extraction (option accessible under the "Mode" menu of MTR's main screen).

After extraction, what you end up with is called a VIDEO_TS directory which contains .BUP, .VOP, and .IFO files. Various media players will be able to read this directory and play the DVD as if it were reading it directly from the disc.

My recommendation for a 3rd party app would be VLC. This sucker will play just about any media format you throw at it. The interface is simple and everything works great. There is an option in VLC to open a disc and select a VIDEO_TS directory to mount.

Alternatively, you can use Apple's Front Row. It, too, will mount VIDEO_TS directories.

Now if your goal is to convert the extracted VIDEO_TS directory into some other format, HandBrake is your friend. It can easily convert to a single file in the .MP4, .MKV, .AVI, or .OGM formats. In additiona, it can modifty the end result to have a different output resolution (i.e. for smaller screens like an iPod).

For even more details, see Wired.com's "Burn a DVD on Your Mac" article here.

How to remove the password of a dmg file?

I have a dmg file (3.7 GB) which is a video and I can play it on my mac, I am trying to burn it on a dvd so i can play it on a dvd player or my playstation, i am able to successfully burn it but it still doesn't play neither on a DVD player nor my playstation, i tried a pc too but still doesn't read it...the dmg file is encrypted, I was wondering if this was the problem, will decrypting solve this or there is another issue... any suggestion is very much appreciated!

Answer
To find the password of any encrypted file, contact the person who made it. I wish there was some other way, but there is not. The reason for the password is so you cannot use it without the password. The guy didn't put a password on it just to make you look around on websites and ask here at Yahoo Answers and waste half a day. He did it to STOP YOU FROM USING THE FILE. Why would he do that? No idea. Ask him.

"I have a dmg file (3.7 GB) which is a video"
Not really true. A DMG file is a disk image. The file INSIDE the disk image COULD be a movie file--or not. If it is a bunch of files, such as "VIDEO_TS" and others, it is a group of files that together make a DVD. Typically, you simply drag those files to a blank DVD and click the burn icon. To tell us what the heck is in the disk image, double-click it to mount it, and look at the file extension of the file (extension is the part AFTER the dot).

If this DMG has the folder "VIDEO_TS" and such, you can extract a compressed movie file from it using Handbrake.

To use a compressed movie file in Windows 7, these formats work....

"Windows Media Player 12 has built-in support for many popular audio and video formatsâincluding 3GP, AAC, AVCHD, MPEG-4, WMV, and WMA. It also supports most AVI, DivX, MOV, and Xvid files." --from the 1st link below

If the stuff inside the DMG is not a complete set of folders/files for a DVD, but is instead a compressed movie file, you can still use that file to make a DVD movie disc, although the quality will typically be lower than that of a commerical DVD movie disc. To make a DVD movie disc on a Mac....

-- If your computer is not 2011 or later model, it came with iDVD (which happens to be discontinued now). Use it. iMovie is the app that came with your Mac for editing movies. Then it has an option to Export to iDVD, which has a Help menu, and if that doesn't answer all your questions, use support.apple.com for "iDVD menus" or whatever your question is about.

-- If your 2011 or later computer came with no iDVD, use DVDStyler. It is a free (not a demo / trial) open-source alternative to iDVD for Intel Macs. It has most of the same options as iDVD, but not as many cool themes.

How do i use the Burn app on Mac os x to burn dvd?

i have lots of movies in .AVI format that i want to burn to disc so i can watch them in my dvd player. I tried doing what i thought but the dvd player said the format was wrong. please help i thought this was simple??

Answer
Hello, luvlifegiz23.
You didn't mention which computer you have. Is it Apple? Did it come with a DVD burner? Apple provided iMovie and iDVD which is EVERYTHING you need EXCEPT the codecs for the outdated AVI format. Get that by downloading Perian, link below. Perian will enable your Apple programs to use AVI and FLV (Youtube) files. You don't have to download any of those other things. That is not to say those other apllications won't work. They may do the job as well, but why spend time learning some off-the-wall applications to duplicate the abilities you have in iMovie and iDVD?

Step 1: Download and install Perian. It simply provides the conversion software that works in the background. You don't ever need to do anything with it.

Step 2: Open iMovie, choose"New Project", and choose where to save the project. {a project has the movie file, plus any special effects files you add from iMovie that can be merged into the final DVD movie}. Go to File > Import. After you import the AVI file, move the thumbnail(s) to the bottom of the iMovie window to arrange them in the Clip Viewer. Add transitions or titles if you need them by following the iMovie Help.

Step 3: When done, click the iDVD button at the right to add chapter markers, if you need them.

Step 4: When done, click the "Create iDVD Project" button to launch iDVD. Use iDVD Help to learn how to add a menu and chapters.

Step 5: When done, click the burn button. You will get a message to insert a blank DVD. Use Verbatim brand if you have any trouble with other brands (big name is no guarantee when it comes to DVD quality).

Can I get an external Blu Ray player for my Mac?

Rob

I also want to know if I can play it using my DVD player app.

Answer
You can get an external Blu-Ray player, but Apple does not support Blu-Ray yet, so you will need to use 3rd Part software - the player will probably have one bundled, or you can get Roxio Toast with HD plug-in.
You can check one of the MAC retailers - like http://eshop.macsales.com/search/Reads%20%20%20Writes%20Blu%20Ray%20%20DVD%20%20and%20CD%20medias

How to make a Mac run a disc after restarting?

Anthony

I have a disc that I need to run after restarting my mac. How do I set it up to do this?
I'm talking about a CD DISC not a HD DSK. I want it to run the DISC when I restart it.

Answer
What does "a disc that I need to run" mean? You can run an application, but not a disc.

Do you refer to a CD that has one or more executable files ("executable file" means program / app / installer) on it? Those apps do not run until you decide to run them. OS X does not support general auto run of executable files because it is a serious security risk. Imagine that some prankster in your office burned a CD with a malwear installer that could launch at startup, and he put it in your computer's CD slot while your computer was off and you were getting coffee. Unless you put a locking cover over the CD slot, you could get duped into accidentally installing malwear on your system.

In System Preferences > CDs & DVDs, you can select to open iTunes or another app when you insert a music CD, open iPhoto or another app when you insert a picture CD, and to open DVD Player or another app when you insert a video DVD. You can also chose for the system to ignore these same types of discs.

If you have a particular disc with a particular executable ("runable") file on it that you would love to have launch without your going to all the trouble of clicking it, you can write a script that can accomplish this. You would need either to add a repeating poll event or add several seconds delay to the launch command to allow the disc to mount after login. Add the script to your account Login Items.

I have an old apple remote and was wondering if anyone knew of a program that would hook it up with iTunes. The remote controls FrontRow by default and I found a few apps that connect the remote to other programs, but I'm looking for a free app.

Answer
I'm afraid iTunes already works with the Apple Remote. I can change songs even when I'm not in the front row. It also works for DVD player and iPhoto.

What can I do if my Windows Media Player needs a DVD decoder installed?

micah

My laptop is running on Windows 7. I tried to click the Web Help button but I wasn't able to understand the technicalities written there, only that I need an MPEG-2 decoder. HELP!

Answer
hat is a Codec? A "Codec" is a technical term for the "compression/decompression" of large downloadble files. Commonly associated with music and movie files transmitted, they tell the player how to decode the movie you want to play. Codec Vary depending on the program that created them.
Chances are you are missing a Codec or two. Do yourself a favor and get VLC Player, it just works and comes with all of it's Codec's.
VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Simple, Powerful and Fast
Plays everything, Files, Discs (DVD, CD, VCD), Devices and Streams
Plays most codecs with no codec packs needed
Completely Free, 0 Spyware, Ads or User Tracking
Best Mpeg2, x264, DivX player
Works on most platforms: Windows, Linux, Mac, Unix...
Media Converter and Streamer
"It plays everything!"
The media player that fulfills all your needs. It handles DVDs, (S)VCDs, Audio CDs, web streams, TV cards and much more.
With VLC, there is no need to continually update many different codec packs. VLC comes with nearly every codec built in!
And whats more, VLC can play back your files, even if the media is damaged! Missing or broken pieces wont stop VLC. All the video and audio information that remains can be played.
1. DVD decryption is done through the libdvdcss library.
2. VLC on GNU/Linux, Solaris, and Microsoft Windows has playback control support via libcdio and libvcdinfo. On other platforms, SVCD support varies depending on the availability of these libraries. (Volunteers for adding support are always welcome.). Handling still frames (often used in menus) and switching between different video formats is problematic.
3. On Mac OS X 10.4 or later, VLC is able to grab video and audio from EyeTV applications and therefore all EyeTV-compatible capture devices. The user needs to install a plugin to EyeTV.app in order to use this feature. Guidance is provided in the User Interface. Requires VLC 0.9.0 or later.
4. VLC for GNU/Linux supports V4L2 compatible encoding cards as well as two kinds of MPEG-2 encoding cards: Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-250/350 and Visiontech Kfir.
5. VLC can capture video from internal iSights on Mac OS X 10.5 or later (video only) since version 0.9.0. VLC 1.2 adds enables capturing from all devices supported by QTKit.
