Is it worth it to buy an hd dvd player?

Jack

Answer
Well, it depends.

All the HD-DVD players in existence were made by Toshiba (a couple of companies sell re-labeled HD-DVD players, and two othercompanies made Blu-Ray players that also handled HD-DVD), so they're pretty similar. HD-DVD players all play DVDs, they all upconvert nicely (some people claim it's the best upconversion around, though IMHO the PS3 does at least as well). So, for the price of a DVD player, or less, the HD-DVD player will make a fine DVD player.

However, you may miss out on some "advanced" features.. many regular DVD players play MP3s, DivX video, show JPEGs, etc. from CD and DVD. If these things are important to you, double-check, since they are not likely supported in the existing HD-DVD players.

As for buying HD-DVDs, there you have a bigger question. The DVDs you buy today are likely to last well beyond the life of any single player, and there's every reason to believe they'll be playable on readily available hardware for the forseeable future. HD-DVDs, on the other hand, will only play on HD-DVD players, which are no longer made. So if you do buy any HD-DVD discs, they're probably good only for the life of your existing player. Some HD-DVD fans have bought-up extra units. While it's impossible to say for certain, your HD-DVD player should last at least 3-5 years, but when it's gone, it's not likely replaceable.

And of course, no one's releasing new HD-DVD titles. If you can pick some up cheap (like, for the price of rental), I see no reason not to if you have an HD-DVD player. But if you're really interested in high def video going forward, Blu-Ray is that future. .

BTW, there's only one or two layers in an HD-DVD disc or Blu-Ray, just as with DVD. More layers are theoretically possible with Blu-Ray, perhaps up to eight, but none exist, and they would not necessarily play on all existing Blu-Ray players (maybe the PS3, with an upgrade.. Sony seems to use it to test out any new Blu-Ray option).

Hi which Toshiba HD-DVD player should I buy for my "50" Hitachi HDTV/LCD & it is 1080i resolution?

GAMER VET

Hi I want to buy Toshiba HD-DVD player. Since my HDTV it is 1080i resolution & I am looking for cost less then $220.

Thank you!
Please don't tell me to buy the blu-ray instead! I choose HD-DVD & everyone has different taste. I also don't care of the format war either! The format war will be over in the next 9 yrs.

Answer
HD DVD is the better choice for HD disks ... more capable player and stable/final specification. I've also read that HD DVD players are better upscaling DVD players for when you want to watch DVDs. Ignore all the brainwashed blu-ray fans!

That said you really only have one choice if you want the Toshiba name on it ... the HD-A3 (and since you only have a 1080i HDTV it's all you need.

However, there is another option -- the Venturer SHD7000 -- $198 at Walmart. In reality it is a rebranded HD-A3 so it's really a Toshiba. The only consideration is the "free" disk offer. As I understand it the real Toshiba qualifies for more movies, so the price difference (based on what price you can find the HD-A3 at) may be the deciding factor. Your choice. The link is to the SHD7000 owners thread at AVS Forum.

Q. if I buy an HD DVD will it only play HD DVD players or can I play a normal DVD on it? Can I play and HD DVD(disk) on a normal DVD player? HD DVD and Blue Ray are the same??

I'm so confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
hd dvd are no longer used. it was a format war much like vhs and the other things. blue ray players use a blue ray (hence the name) to read disk. blue light has a higher frequency than red so it can read smaller areas of the disk. this means more data can be stored on the disk and therefore you can store videos which are 2 hours long and play at 50mb/s (hd).

I mean can I buy a current Philips HD dvd player and will the speakers still connect to it?

Answer
No. The Philips DVD/CD Home Theater System HTS3544 1000 Watts does not have a digital input for sound. Only 1 x audio line-in ( mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm ) meant for Ipod and GoGear devices.

Ok, I am a big home theater buff, and just finally getting into the HD players. I am ready to buy an HD player but am so confused on how the audio works. To get the dolby digital plus of dolby tru, does the audio need to be played through the HDMI cord and into the AV reciever? Heres my setup: 7.1 Surround, 50 inch plasma with 1 HDMI input, and Pioneer THX reciever ( but with NO HDMI input) So my question is, If i buy an HD DVD player, and just run the HDMI cable from the dvd player to the tv ( since my reciever doesnt have an HDMI input), will I only get the HD pic, and not the awesome sound features like DD+? Basically, can I get the great sound HD DVD players have to offer by running an optical cable to my reciever, or does that sound only come through the HDMI? So confused :) Thank you!
Also one more thing to add: can someone please clarify the Dolby Digital plus / DTS HD. If I am not capable of running the audio thrgouh HDMI, which it doesnt sound like i wil be seeing my reciever doesnt have it, will the dvd player try and decode the DD+ if I use a simple optical cable? Would this sound still be better than a standard DVD, or am I wasting my money buying an HD DVD player when my reciever has no HDMI input? Thank you!

Answer
you are still going to get better sound, but it will not be 100%

but it is still going to be HD sound thru the optical, it is going to sound like DVD-A or SACD, or like the HD sound from your TV

Is it worth it to buy an HD DVD player or will all store convert to Blu-Ray movies?

I would like to get an HD DVD player until I have the money for a PS3, but I'm afraid stores will stop selling HD movies (like many stores already have) and I will be stuck with a player and no movies to buy. Also, I hardly see any place that sells HD DVDs. Do you know where a good place is to buy them?

Answer
HD's are going away no more movies will be put out for that system.... go with the blu ray

Q. I want to buy a multi-region dvd player but the one I like is a HD Dvd player. However, I own a regular non-HD TV. Will the player work with my TV?

Answer
If your tv supports and of the cable connections, then yes. You however will not experience the full HD effect.

Most DVD players have component cable support, with the newer HD models using HDMI and components. If your tv can connect with component or HDMI, then you are good.
