DVD recorder?

Q. anybody have a DVD recorder? im thinking of buying one because right now what we have is a regular camcorder, and it sucks when i have to transfer it to a VHS tape (which is already obsolete) for my mom.
questions:
1. with the DVD recorder -- can you really actually watch it as is on your DVD player?
2. is it rewritable? let's say you were to film an event for only 30 minutes and you still have some space left -- can you add more filming to that? and let's say there is a section of the film that you don't like, can you record on top of that?
3. any good brands? any recommendations?
4. is it worth it?

im just asking it over here because i come home late at night and the stores are already closed so i can't really ask the people who work there. i want to give it as a gift to my mom, and hopefully it's easy to use. she's been bringing this bulky camcorder everywhere and it's heavy for her. i saw that the dvd recorder is lighter.

Answer
#1 yes....a dvd recorder is awesome
#2.....it's rewriteable..depending on the blank dvds you buy..you'll have to buy rewriteable dvds
#3...you get what you pay for...if you want a good one, then you'll have to fork over some decent money. Try looking at Consumer Reports
#4 yes, I think you'll like it. They'll last a lot longer than a vhs tape...and easier to store or transport with you.

I really think a DVD recorder is an awesome thing, especially as a present for your mom. This is an excellant idea on your part. Go ahead with your bad self. I'm sure your mom will love it. Best of luck to you...........

DVD recorders...?

P.Y.T.

I just want to make sure....can I empty the photoes I take with a dvd camcorder or a DV camcorder in to a DVD by a DVD recorde? & is it( the dvd recorder) & a dvd player the same machien??!which model or brand do U recomend?

Answer
Some DVD camcorders take pictures and video. Some Camcorders record photos on the original media by freezing a frame of video, some have a separate media for the photos.

The camcorder will play video taken with the camcorder on tv's and you can transfer the video to computers to edit and make videos, DVD and/or VHS. I have heard of some camcorders that record to DVD recorders and make DVD's directly, but you don't get to edit those videos.

My recommendation is to get a photo camera to take photos and a camcorder to take video. A camcorder that takes pictures doesn't take very good pictures and a photo camera that takes video doesn't take very good video. Get a camera for each.

If you want a combo, I would determine which is most important to you, Video or Photos and get the camera that will give you the best quality for that mode of recording. So, if video is most important to you, get a camcorder and get one with the best photo capabilities you can afford. BUT be mindful, if you start to pay too much, it may be more econimical to own a separate photo camera.

Get a Camcorder that records DV either on tape or on small media DVD's. Get a camera that can record at least 3 megapixels. You can go as high as 6 megapixels, but 5 is good enough and 3 is the minimum for 4x6 photos.

You must choose the best model or brand depending on your priorities, but major name brands can be had for good prices, Sony, Samsung, JVC, RCA. Panasonic, Canon. I would avoid Bu Bu Gao because I'm sure they have no authorized service locations in the US.

Good Luck and Happy Shopping.

DVD Recorder question?

TheVan

I am trying to copy a VHS to DVD with my dvd recorder, simply to back up my VHS collection. When I try to copy it, it says that it is unable to copy because it is copy protected. Is there any way to get around this? How do I back up a copy protected VHS to a DVD?

Answer
If you are just coping home movies then any good VHS / DVD Recorder will do. However if you wish to back up any copy protected videos (as a rule if you purchased a movie it is copy protected) then you will need separate VHS player and DVD recorder with a stabilizer between them. I have see consumer stabilizers designed for this range in cost from $50-$150. The problem is most of them do a poor job at best. If you can find one, some older consumer video mixers like the Videonics MX-1 and MX-Pro with a digital TBCs (Time Base Correctors) will do a much better job (try it before you buy it or make sure you can return it). As far as home movies they are no problem, all you need is just a VHS player, cables and a DVD-Recorder as long as the VHS tapes are in good shape. As far as VCRs I like the higher end consumer Panasonic and JVC VHS recorders with built in TBCs. They are very stable and can often produce a better image. These can often be found at a pawn shop cheap (not a lot of demand for VHS anymore). As far as stand alone DVD recorders all I have ever had were Panasonic, I suggest one that has a internal hard drive. These are great machines, and do very high quality recordings from your TV system, video camera or VCR and are easy to use, they can even do basic editing. By the way, you can also just hookup your camcorder directly to your DVD recorder and make copies of your home movies.

I have to use componet jacks for the HD signals - the problem is that I can only recieve basic cable channels on the dvd.vhs player/recorder - I want to be able to recieve all the channels on my set top box on my dvd/vhs player/recorder also

Answer
Looks like your only option is to split the component signal out from your set top box to the TV and the recorder, then connect the output from your recorder to your TV for playback.

Another bummer: your recording and TV viewing options are limited to what your set-top box is set to at the moment, unless you split the coax signal to your set-top box and recorder and make sure you only record your basic analog cable channel while watching your digital or HDTV channel at the same time.

I have a Sony Video Camera Recorder, Model No. CCD-TRV15. It records onto 8mm tapes. I have a DVD/VHS player that can also convert VHS tapes to DVD, but it is too expensive to get Wal-Mart or another company to convert the 8mm tapes to VHS and then DVD. So my questions are: 1. Is there a cord I can use to connect the camcorder to the computer? I know that this camera is so old these may not even exist... and 2. Is there a cheap, but reliable, machine of some sort that I can use to transfer 8mm tapes to DVD or to my computer?

Thanks so much for your input!

Answer
Connect the AV-out from the camcorder to an "analog/digital converter". The A/D converter connects to the computer. Elgato, Roxio and lots of others make them. The better ones cost more becasue they work better.

How do I burn a VHS to a DVD?

I have some VHS videos I want to put on DVD. I have a DVD recorder and VHS player but do not know how to connect them all to do it. Have tried a couple of different combinations of the wires but cannot get it to work. Can anybody help?

Answer
.
you can use RC cables or component video cables
.
you will need 2 pairs AV (RC Cable) with stero(red, yellow, white)
.
connect the A/V out from the VHS to the DVR A/V input
.
connect the A/V out from DVR to TV
.
power on everything put the Vhs cassette
and play, turn your tv to video mode, you should be getting video on tv screen now, put a brand new blank cd inside the DVR, press and hold the Record Button. Before recording tune your VHS for Best Video
.
This is the gendral process if this dont work give me your model no i will give you full discription.
