High definition DVD players will play HD-DVD or Blu-Ray DVD movies, which are recorded in 720p or 1080i or 1080p format. This means higher resolution, clearer picture and better movie experience.

The more traditional DVD players will play standard DVD's, which output at 480p.

Upconverting DVD players will play standard DVD's and scale the movies to 720p or 1080i. Quasi-high def. It's more marketing hype.

Side note, it takes approximately 10GB for an hour of high definition video. Original DVD's only store up to 8.4GB, where the high definition DVD's can store more than 50GB. Hence the need for a new format like HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, in order to support high def movies.

Ok, I just bought myself my first HDTV with 1080p resolution. And I want to try to get the most out of the DVD's I already have, and I have to be honest, I don't know too much about this stuff. I eventually want to get a Blue-Ray player, but it's out of my budget at the moment. So I was thinking about getting a DVD player with 1080p up-scaling capabilities.

My question is, does it really make a noticeable difference versus just watching DVDs with a DVD that is only capable of using composite cables? Is the difference noticeable enough to justify buying a DVD with 1080p up-scaling capabilities, or is this something that will hardly be noticeable and I would be better off saving the money for the Blue-ray player? Thanks in advance.

A dvd player that uses only yellow/red/white composite cables will send the lowest form of quality pic to your new tv. Check the back of your dvd player to see if it has red/green/blue component cables. If so, you can use those and go into your dvd player's set up menu and adjust the pic to 16:9 and the brightness and contrast and get a decent pic out of it. Your tv will upscale any signal it gets to 1080p anyway, all HD tvs display at their native resolution only. So you don't need an up scaling dvd player.

There are some very cheap blu rays out now and some people are selling first generation blu rays on craigslist, so I'd go blu ray if you are upgrading.

A Standard DVD picture is 720x480.
The DVD player needs to scale that picture to 1920x1080.
There are many techniques used that combine pixel interpolation with motion estimation/compensation; however, in its simplest form, pixel interpolation will work.
Note that all HDTVs can scale as well, some even better than upconverting DVD players, so try you player with 480i or 480p output and see what your TV does. You may be surprised!!

There are several problems with your question:

* You made a statement and put a question mark at the end. This is not a question. I assume you are looking for a DVD player that can play mkv files? (Your English teacher is shaking her head in sorrow).

* A DVD player is a standard def device. It is locked into 480 lines of video. It can never support anything higher than that.

* A DVD player is a standard def device in a HDTV world. Why, why, why would you consider buying one of these?

* A MKV file is like a zip file - it is a container that can hold video encoded in many different formats. This makes it one of the more difficult file types to handle.

* Some DVD players play DVD+R, some -R. What type of burner do you have?

* etc.

My advice: save up $99 and go buy a Western Digital TV Live box. This thing will play most of your computer files from a USB flash drive, or stream wirelessly from your PC. It also give you lots of streaming apps (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Pandora, etc.).

I have done the whole "Convert/burn/play" thing and it takes HOURS, and often does not work right. The WD box is much simpler.

Yes, you will benefit from a true unadulterated 1080p source (i.e. Blu-Ray). The question is, is your HDTV able to configure 1080p resolution?

The shortest (and most direct) path will give you the best reproduction. That being said, you may want to get your video to the TV directly from your (soon-to-come) Blu-Ray Player via HDMI. Just a thought to consider.

Actually, it's worse than that because the Blu-Ray is probably a true progressive signal whereas the DVD may well be interlaced, which means it has to be deinterlaced for the TV which in a cheap implementation will mean throwing away half the vertical resolution.

Up-scaling is just a gimmick, the DVD player can't create data which doesn't exist on the disk, it can only try to make it look less horrible than simply stretching out every pixel to 5-10x the size.

If your Sony DVD player has HDMI output, then yes, connect it to the TV's HDMI input.

You didn't say what model DVD player you have, but it probably doesn't include audio in the HDMI output. For that you need a separate digital audio cable, which you'll connect from the DVD player to the Onkyo receiver, not the TV.

There are two kinds of digital audio connections, optical and coaxial. Depending on what kind of output your DVD player has, you'll need either a TOSlink optical cable or an RCA coaxial cable.

Using this cable, connect the DVD player's digital audio output to the Onkyo receiver's digital audio input (the Onkyo has both types). These cables are cheap, less than $5.

Then you'll have great picture and sound, although you'll have to switch the Onkyo to the correct audio input to hear the DVD audio.

yes and no. While it certainly includes upscaling it also sets contrast and colour to "optimize" the picture. Note it works only if both the player and the TV support it. Upscaling DVD players are common (and all BD players upscale DVDs) but they only change resolution (and image quality varies widely depending on the sophistication of the video processor used). Otherwise, you could consider the LG player that plays

both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Discs if the high price is

not out of the question. A 1080i resolution is plenty

good enough for HDTV sizes of 37" or smaller.
