My son brought me a DVD/VHS player that he had in storage. He tested it on his television and it works. The television I'd like to hook it up to is an older one with a converter box attached. Of course, neither the television manual or the DVD/VHS player address converter boxes.

Am I going to run into trouble with this when I go to connect the movie player to my television? Both machines are over 5 years old.

Not a problem. Here's the procedure:

To use a VCR with a digital converter:

1. Connect a very good antenna to the converter's input.
2. Connect the converter's coaxial output to the VCR's antenna input.
3. Connect the VCR's coaxial output to your TV's antenna connector, or connect the composite jacks from the VCR (yellow-red-white) to a composite input on your TV.
4. Set the converterâs output to channel 3 or 4.
5. Set the VCR tuner to the same channel as step 4 and leave it there permanently.
6. If you connected the VCR to your TV's antenna jack in step 3, set the TV's tuner to the same channel as step 4 and leave it there permanently.
7. Select the desired digital channel with your converter's remote. Get a good picture on your TV.
8. Program your VCR for the desired time span to record.
9. Leave the converter and VCR as-is until recording is complete. You cannot watch one channel while recording another.

If you want, you can turn off the TV once youâve obtained a good picture on the channel youâre going to record. The TV itself has no function during the recording process.

IMPORTANT: Check the userâs guide for your converter for a âpower down timerâ feature. Most of them have such a timer, and the box comes with it set to a default of 2 to 4 hours. If you set your VCR to record something 5 hours from now, the converter will be off and youâll get nothing. The userâs guide will tell you how to disable the power down timer.

I have a disc that I need to run after restarting my mac. How do I set it up to do this?
I'm talking about a CD DISC not a HD DSK. I want it to run the DISC when I restart it.

What does "a disc that I need to run" mean? You can run an application, but not a disc.

Do you refer to a CD that has one or more executable files ("executable file" means program / app / installer) on it? Those apps do not run until you decide to run them. OS X does not support general auto run of executable files because it is a serious security risk. Imagine that some prankster in your office burned a CD with a malwear installer that could launch at startup, and he put it in your computer's CD slot while your computer was off and you were getting coffee. Unless you put a locking cover over the CD slot, you could get duped into accidentally installing malwear on your system.

In System Preferences > CDs & DVDs, you can select to open iTunes or another app when you insert a music CD, open iPhoto or another app when you insert a picture CD, and to open DVD Player or another app when you insert a video DVD. You can also chose for the system to ignore these same types of discs.

If you have a particular disc with a particular executable ("runable") file on it that you would love to have launch without your going to all the trouble of clicking it, you can write a script that can accomplish this. You would need either to add a repeating poll event or add several seconds delay to the launch command to allow the disc to mount after login. Add the script to your account Login Items.
